The Comedians (2015)
Where did this go to?
This is/was a fabulous show. Inventive, unusual, and absolutely hilarious. Great writing and great acting. Stephnie Weir was incredibly vulnerable and yet so offbeat - a charm to watch. Josh Gad and Billy Crystal played off each other so well. Both Larry Charles and Steven Weber as the directors was a stroke of great casting. For any one who has worked in any form of entertainment, whether TV, film, video, Equity or community theater, this show rings true to the combination of egos and jerks and brilliant talent found in them all. Not since Chris Thompson's 'Action' starring Jay Mohr, Illeana Douglas, and Buddy Hackett has there been a show that delves so riotously into the imagined backstage of Hollywood. I miss this show and wish it would come back to life. Even my DVR misses recording it. Anybody know any backstory about it's disappearance? Will it return?
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Great writing & acting
What a refreshing change from the pap usually on TV. Daniel Levy is great at playing a nervous, self-absorbed character, of the type I've met in real life too many times. Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy are wonderful as usual. Both are subtle, involved and deep into their characters. A strong cast rounded out with Chris Elliot, Jennifer Robertson and Annie Murphy - with a special mention for Emily Hampshire as the bemused and sarcastic motel clerk. Elliot typically plays the obnoxious, too-close-to-your-face buffoon, but this time it's so well placed and played, it seems completely necessary for the plot. Well-written with great dialog, including the many under-the-breath statements we all make and hear in our daily lives. Excellent editing, too. If you're expecting (or hoping for) a typical Big 4 Network sitcom, with laugh track and vapid characters delivering vapid writing, then you'll be disappointed with this show. It's clever, delicious, and a breath of fresh air. I even like the color-correction! In a way, this reminds me of the old sitcom, "Action" starring Jay Mohr, from about 15 years ago, in the sense that it's a total break from television convention. Encore, please!
