Dirty Water (2023)
Really a 7.5
A really good mix between absurd scenarios and the reliability of being a Glasga worker. I personally have a soft spot for anything that has a good slagging between mates.
It certainly has some rough edges that need smoothing out but my guess is that it's, like other shows that will find its feet with more episodes. I'll be interested to see what STV do with it, I looked up to see if there were another 3 episodes due to be released as British sitcoms are usually 6 episodes but I can't find anything other than a live show.
I love Auld Craw and Kaitlin, they're really like an odd couple and 'The Beaver' (the boss) I wouldn't mind being in charge of me! Some of jokes don't fully land but there are plenty to make you laugh out loud!
Lost (2004)
Get lost in this show
One of the best shows ever made in my opinion. If you're willing/ready to binge watch a series, I am sure you won't be disappointed. All of the characters are great and the show just keeps getting better.
What a journey this show takes you on... it's something really unique and holds a special place in my heart. I've seen it maybe 3 times in total now.
Some people dislike this due to the ending, but I actually liked the ending and found it quite emotional. Others may have disliked the show because when it first aired they had to wait a week every time to find out what happens next and they usually leave it on a cliffhanger where you want to know what happens or something strange is going on that you can't understand yet and it leaves some frustrated - so it's better to get the box set and binge it. As the show progresses you do start to understand some of the mysteries.
You can really get invested in this show if you let it and it can bring a lot of intrigue, joy, emotion and intense moments. Every character fits perfectly in this show.
The Vicar of Dibley (1994)
Hidden gem
I've been re-watching this show with my girlfriend and it's Absolutely laugh out loud funny. Exactly what you need from a sitcom, at the end of the working day to be given some laughter. The show is full of witty writing, heartwarming moments, and skilled performances from its cast, particularly Dawn French as the lady Vicar who arrives in a sleepy, yet crazy town whose occupants are expecting a male Vicar. She wins them all over eventually of course, but spends most of the time dealing with the general insanity of the village on a day-to-day basis. If you are a fan of British comedies, you should check this one out for sure. It is one of the absolute best.
Saw X (2023)
Surprisingly brilliant!
So I only got into the franchise about 3 or 4 years ago having not been a horror fan up until recently. Saw quickly became my favorite series even if it got a bit ridiculous in the later movies. It was really interesting to see how this movie portrayed John Kramer. We never really saw the previous movies from his POV for the majority but there was time and care put into showing us what its like as he is controlling the games as well have a bit more sympathy towards him, something that got harder and harder to do as the movies went on. Tobin Bell put on an amazing perfomance and is still one of the greatest horror icons of all time. Shawnee Smith returns as Amanda Young and she didn't miss a beat, getting a glimpse of her lust for blood but also seeing her relationship with Kramer and her attachment to the games was amazing to see play out. Some of the players of the games were a bit cheesy but Saw has had plenty of cheesy characters so it fits in perfectly.
The 'Burbs (1989)
all time classic!
"Klopek... What is that, Slavic?"
"NO!"
"Bout a nine on the tension scale their Reub"
One of my all time favorites! From the moment it zooms in on the neighborhood from the universal logo while playing its great score to its satisfying conclusion everything about The Burbs is perfect to me!
It's Funny with many quotable lines, has a great cast, stays in one location for the entire movie (something I always love), and has just just enough creepiness to balance it out.
It's also easy to point at people in your own life and place them in the unique roles occupied by the members of this neighborhood! Well maybe (hopefully) not the Klopeks but for everyone else you can!
Just a great movie to put on and watch after you've called "the pizza dude"
Risky Business (1983)
40th anniversary re-appraisal
Tom Cruise is fantastic, and you can really see a movie star emerging from its cocoon. Hard to imagine him doing anything remotely close to being this overtly sexual now. He's become very concerned with being likable. And I can't overstate how good Rebecca DeMornay is here. Her performance is very subtle and very controlled. Lana is a character who almost never gives a straight answer. She evades and deflects, and DeMornay uses very small facial movements to allow the character to peek through the evasions.
I don't think there's a single supporting performance that phones it in either. Curtis Armstrong and Bronson Pinchot are particularly good. And then there's baby Joe Pantoliano, already a threatening presence as Guido, a man who controls every situation with complete calm.
Unfortunately, I've never been a fan of Tangerine Dream. They created essentially the same score for every movie they worked on. Their music barely takes the movie into account; it's just them doing what they do, only now there's film footage over it. But the film only loses half a star for that, because the lineup of songs on the soundtrack is phenomenal.
Crimson Tide (1995)
Proper movie making
Back when I was employed I'd get home late, around 12:30 AM. I'd make some food and, if I didn't have to work the following morning, watch a movie, usually going to sleep sometime around three. Now, my kids wake up around 8:30, which means I have to get up around 7:00, so staying up late is tough. I usually can't make it much past 11:30 PM before falling asleep. This is one reason why I've been watching so many Hong Kong movies over the last couple of years: because they're rarely more than 100 minutes long, I can fit one in between when the wife goes to sleep at 10:00 and I fall asleep at midnight.
Last night, I started this late, finding it buried on Instant Netflix sometime around 10:45 PM. I watched the whole thing, finishing around 1:00. I never felt the least bit sleepy.
