Fallout (2024)
Best Game Adaptation I've Ever Seen
Gamers and movie adaptations of games have always had a rocky relationship. We appreciate Angelina for Tomb Raider. Uncharted was fun, mindless action with subpar casting. Assassin's Creed was...well, we try not to remember. It seemed as though the video game curse were doomed to repeat itself, until we were blessed with Craig Mazin's The Last of Us. Beautiful stories, jaw dropping sets, and amazing performances from the lead actors.
I thought to myself, "It'll probably be another 10-15 years before we get a decent adaptation like that." I couldn't be happier to be wrong. Fallout doesn't demand your attention, its struts its stuff and you can't help but watch. The cast is amazing, the story is gripping, the violence is bloody fantastic (literally) and the choice to make the soundtrack a blend of music from different Fallout games is just a perfect little maraschino cherry on top.
I don't really understand the two reviews that are hating on it. To each their own, but this series is amazing and deserves a fair chance. Absolutely amazing and I can't wait to see more. Amazon is killing it this year.
Asgard's Wrath 2 (2023)
The one that walks, so others can run
Quick review at the bottom. I LOVE RPG's. I'm very happy with my life, but stepping into the shoes of another character and making choices/managing inventory through a decent story will always be one of my favorite pastimes. I've had an Oculus Quest 2 for about 2 years. When I first bought it, it was all my roommate and I did. We'd spend so much time after work just hanging out in the living room and playing games like Rec Room, Arizona Sunshine, and Demeo. So many times, we'd talk about how solid an RPG would be on Oculus, or how cool it'd be if Skyrim or Fallout New Vegas was ported to it. There were games like Saints and Sinners and a township tale, but nothing to quench the thirst for a solid, true RPG. We spent a few months playing some solid VR games, but eventually, I put the headset down and let it collect dust while I played on my PS5. I plan on getting the PS5 VR headset, but I still wanted to get some use out of my $300 Oculus Quest 2 headset. Then, one beautiful day, I saw an ad for this game and in the 20-25 seconds they had to show, my $60 was in. This game is amazing. I can't do it justice. Even just watching reviews on it, you're seeing it all on a flat screen, but when you have the actual headset on and play it yourself, it's insane. It's the Persona 5 of VR games, as far as length. There's just so much to do and it's all interesting. It's not an emotional game, but it is SO satisfying to play and explore. Now, as far as how good this game is, I don't think it will go down as one of the greatest RPGs ever, but it's a step - no, a LEAP, in the right direction. This game is absolutely a banger 10/10. You're getting a full adventure you get to play on your own. I hope that other companies with good reputation/writers see this game, see what players want, and double down on delivering some revolutionary RPGs for VR. This game is a MUST HAVE for any Quest owners.
TLDR: 10/10 great gameplay, pretty good story. Played on Quest 2 (compatible and FREE with Quest 3) and it runs just fine.
Ghost of Tsushima (2020)
Still one of the best PlayStation exclusives to ever exist
I played this game when it first came out in 2020. Speed-ran it during COVID and have just now picked it back up to take my time and thoroughly explore everything this game has to offer. It's a samurai fantasy. From being able to customize your own look, change the weather around you, and have epic samurai sword fights, this game is everything you could dream of in a Japanese samurai story. The island DLC wasn't out when I played it, so I don't have much to say on that, but I'm super excited to jump in and start it. Ubisoft is able to make cool games about history/mythology, but the map always feel overwhelming and I feel like I'm just with a to-do list full of missions that were written by an A. I. GoT is pretty big, but does a great job of investing you in the world and defending the islanders again invading Mongols. I've always wanted an Assassin's Creed entry set in Japan, but after this experience, I genuinely don't think Ubisoft could top this. 9/10.
Final Fantasy XVI (2023)
This One Has Stuck With Me
Hey folks, I'd say I'm a pretty average Final Fantasy Fan. Haven't played all of them, but have beaten my fair share of FF titles that I feel confident enough to give a solid opinion on Square Enix's newest edition to the series.
It's been about two months since I beat this title and usually after I beat a game, I just go on to the next and enjoy it. FFXVI has managed to have a solid impact on my life, at the moment, and the characters feel very real/fleshed out for me. I haven't been so immersed in game side characters since Red Dead 2; not to compare the two, they're vastly different games. Everything about the cast, from Cid's voice performance to the designs of the bosses, is amazing and so unique. While I think I enjoyed VII remake and XV's soundtrack a bit more, this game was not short of some AMAZING pieces.
If you're on the fence about playing this game, just do yourself the favor and get it. If you're not sure, just wait for a sale and see what you think. In case anyone is wondering how long it is, I had about 76 hours by the time I uninstalled it from my PS5. Can't wait for the DLC!!!!
