The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Disturbing and creepy, but very good.
I was watching this movie thinking, "this is pretty good...but nothing spectacular." It ended, and I thought, "it could have been better." But then I couldn't stop thinking about it. I kept thinking about things that I thought might not make sense, but every time I thought of something else, I realized that it was all pretty well covered. Then, about two hours after seeing it, something just clicked and I was like, "Wow. I get it! THAT was an amazing movie." Not like I didn't understand it, just that I didn't really "get" it until then. I definitely wanted to see it again to see if the plot holds its continuity (the same reason you watch The Sixth Sense again). It's definitely worth seeing in theaters, but just realize that it's going to take a lot of thought, and you won't be able to shake some of the images from the movie for a few hours afterwards. It's not gory, just disturbing.
Cabin Fever (2002)
I wish I had never seen this movie.
A one sentence summary: A few corny jokes mixed in between tests of your gag reflex, and all topped off with an ending that didn't explain or solve anything. I wish I had missed this one, not because it was scary, but because it was just disgusting and there was no plot behind it. There's no explanation of what the virus is, all you know is that one guy gets it and everyone else starts to get it, too. There's no real struggle to stop the virus or to stay alive (you know...PLOT), and it's like they go out of their way to make sure that you hate all the main characters and don't care when they die. I was hoping for something along the lines of The Ring, where there are plot twists and a freaky cause of all of it, but there's nothing like that. This is just a gore flick. If you like that, fine. If not, be glad that you were blessed with an ounce of brains and SKIP THIS MOVIE.
North (1994)
I don't get why people think it's so bad...
Obviously, it's not A Few Good Men, but no one went into the theater expecting it to be (well...nobody went into the theater at all...). I really think it's a pretty charming movie. It's very original, which can't be said for so many other movies. Also, it's not a serious movie, so don't expect it to be. Elijah Wood was one of the few good kid actors around this time, and he sold the movie. I just don't understand why everyone slams this movie.
Spy Game (2001)
One of the best movies I've ever seen...
I went in thinking it would be ok, not necessarily expecting all that much. I should have remembered how great Brad Pitt was in Snatch and Fight Club. He did an incredible job in this movie, as did Robert Redford. The plot twists and turns throughout, and it's just an amazing movie. If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out.
Little Big League (1994)
It's really more than just a kids movie...
I really think this movie was done exceptionally well. The humor wasn't just the standard nose-picking, mud-throwing, loud-farting jokes that are so standard in kids movies. This movie was actually well written! I laughed the whole way through it, it's really too bad it gets put in the same class with movies like Rookie of the Year and The Big Green. It's so much more sophisticated (strange word to use to describe a kids movie...I know) as far as the writing style and humor goes than any of those other movies were. I really think that adults may enjoy this movie more than kids, because kids may not get all the jokes. It's disappointing that it will never be seen by so many because of the type of movie that it is and the way it was marketed.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
The best Kevin Smith movie to date...
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was, I think, the best Kevin Smith movie to date. However, I'm a fan of his previous movies, so I understood most, if not all of the countless references to Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. After watching Clerks, I didn't think that Jason Mewes (Jay) was a very good actor. In fact, I thought he was terrible. In Mallrats, he showed much improvement, but I still wasn't terribly impressed. In "Strike Back," his acting was light years ahead of where I ever would have expected it to be. Much of his role was physical comedy, and I thought he did a spectacular job. He was the reason this movie was so funny. Ben Affleck was very funny in his role of Holden McNeil (from Chasing Amy), and, despite the many people who have disagreed with me on this, I thought that Will Ferrell was funny, also (someone said he was this movie's equivalent of Jar Jar Binks). The only disappointment in my mind was Chris Rock. His small part in the movie just wasn't very funny. Overall, it was a great flick. I certainly plan on grabbing it the day it comes out on DVD.
