Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Lacking identity.
I was simply disappointed. For a film with plenty of potential to build a new franchise, a new journey, it just seemed to borrow from to many other story lines, like a rehash of stories told one hundred times before. Charlie Hunnams awful attempt at a northern Irish accent was completely unnecessary and added nothing to his character. So many other characters were lacking in any kind of individuality. Like they were just there to fill a gap in the story. Ultimately it felt like a movie lost in its own self importance and hype that just left me feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. Not Zach Snyders finest moment.by any stretch of the imagination.
Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo (2019)
Inspiring
I always liked Danny Trejo. From Desperado to Heat to Machete he always seemed hand made for the role. To see how he quite literally pulled himself up by his bootstraps, from small time hood to Hollywood star is inspiring. The one line I took from this film that resonates with me is
"everything good that has happened in my life is a direct result of me helping somebody else..everything". Regardless of his fame and fortune, he still lives where he grew up, he still counsels addicts, gives back to his community every chance he gets. A living legend. A documentary that is well worth the watch.
Training Day (2017)
Same old same old.
In a word, sloppy! It's all over the place. In parts the acting is so slap stick I thought it was a comedy. Little or no connection to the film. Good cop, bad cop, set in LA, explosions, gunfire and tacky one liners. A tough, browbeaten cop who has seen it all and a young patrol man with a conscience. It's been done a hundred times before but it just doesn't work this time. There's enough action and weak plot lines to keep you watching it (or at least on the tv as background noise) but with a little more effort it would have been half decent. Totally understandable how it only got one season.
