My Mother, the Spy (2000)
Pleasant surprise!
My wife and I are fans of Alias, so when I saw the DVD for this spy-mommy movie on sale for a buck, I picked it up, thinking we could laugh at how bad it was. I was surprised from quite early in the movie at the talent of the leads, especially the actress who plays the daughter. The writing was excellent, really quite funny for an obviously made-for-TV movie. The movie and actors don't take themselves too seriously, and they seem to be having a lot of fun. The dialog is intelligent and well-executed, the action is fun. We even enjoyed seeing the boom microphone in a few scenes. All in all, a quite surprisingly entertaining movie. I'd say it's worth a rent, especially if you like truly funny action movies.
The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
Brilliantly, consistently hilarious throughout!
Very funny all the way through, full of clever gags, lines, and action sequences. The animation is not particularly spectacular, though the character animation is quite funny, but the script and performances are fantastic. With the exception of John Goodman as the straight-man peasant Pasha, all of the leads are comically brilliant. There are so many really funny things in this film that I laugh out loud every few minutes every time I watch it. It's free enough of objectionable material to be suitable for the kids to watch over and over, but it's parents that will really love it. Kudos to Disney on a very well made flick!
Cats & Dogs (2001)
Really enjoyed it with the kids!
My wife and I took our 7, 5, and 3 year old to see today. It was too loud and a little too scary for the 3 year old, but mom and I and the others really enjoyed it. We were glad for the relatively small number of "objectionables" in the movie, and it was a lot of fun. The adult-targeted humor was subtle and quite funny, the cliches were fun -- we didn't find them distracting at all. I thought it was just hilarious having the super villain in the movie be named "Mr. Tinkles" and have his greatest nemesis in the movie be the housemaid who continually embarrasses him! It was a good laugh-out-loud, fun time with the kids. If you're not bringing kids, it may not be as enjoyable, but we highly recommend it as the best family-friendly film since Spy Kids.
