About a Boy (2002)
Wonderful!
I have just seen this wonderful British movie and totally loved it. I loved the story and the screenplay! A lot of funny scenes but there was also some drama mixed in it. However, they managed to create a very good mixture. The acting was very good, especially by Hugh Grant, who really is a whole lot more talented than I wanted to give him credit for .. that is, until I saw Notting Hill in which he did a very nice job. In Bridget Jones Diary as well but I haven't enjoyed his performance as much before as I did in this one. The boy also did a good job as did Toni Colette. Very worth my money! And you really can't say that about many films nowadays...
Training Day (2001)
Denzel deserved the Oscar so much!!!
Wow, what an amazing and outstanding movie! I was really looking forward to seeing it since Denzel Washington is absolutely one of my very favorite actors ever! His performance in this one was flawless and really amazing. People just don't know him in such a role and he totally convinced as the bad guy. Denzel found his match in Ethan Hawke, he also gave a stunning performance. It's not only the acting that raises this movie so far above average. The director did an outstanding job in creating a very real atmosphere. The story and script were very realistic and definitely not softened for the audience. It's a really fantastic movie, don't miss it!! 10/10
The Opposite of Sex (1998)
Awesome
This movie is awesome and very funny, I loved watching it! It's a naughty little movie which should p*** some hypocrites off but that makes it even more enjoyable... I love the dialog and especially Christina Ricci's voiceover. Totally hilarious! Chr. Ricci is fantastic as a little selfish bitch
(SPOILER?) who does have a heart after all. Lisa Kudrow is also very very good in this movie and she has some really funny dialog, too. It was very clever of Ms. Kudrow to choose this part back in 1998 since "Lucia" is like the opposite of her Friends character "Phoebe". She plays a very strenuous, nerve-wrecking woman who doesn't have too much fun in life. Even tough her character is somewhat conservative she has some real kick-ass lines. lol The other actors do a great job as well even tough Kudrow and Ricci deserve special praise. I guess Kudrow even more than Ricci since she easily steals every scene that she's in. This movie is a gem, 9/10!
Murder by Numbers (2002)
Wow Sandra!!!
I saw this movie last night and it was very good. It's rather a crime drama, exploring the reasons why the 2 teenagers killed the woman. It does have thrilling moments but it's no classical "thriller". What's thrilling about it is the cat-and-mouse game Bullock and the kids have. It's done nicely and the acting is very good. This goes especially for Sandra Bullock who is really presenting a completely new character. Yes, she's tried different genres before like "28 days" (a good movie, too). In it she was also playing a new character but by the end she was too much of the "girl next door" again. In Murder By Numbers she's playing a character that's really not the girl next door and that doesn't change by the end of the movie. She succeeds very well in creating this very different character. Kudos to her acting abilities and that she finally dared to play something completely different/ was finally given a new role. Not that there's anything wrong with the kind of role she often plays but.. she can do other characters really well, too. So good for her she can prove it!
Check it out, it's worth it!
The Others (2001)
Haunting
What a brilliant movie! It has something haunting about it! I saw it last night and I kept thinking about it today. The story is brilliant and intriguing. The movie has an extraordinary atmosphere and great cinematography, lighting etc. Basically everything about this movie is great. Nicole Kidman (with this movie and Moulin Rouge I really like her), the children and the woman who plays Mrs. Mills were all excellent. At the end of the movie one is likely to compare this movie to The Sixth Sense but thinking about it you realize that it varies the topic in a very interesting way. The script is wonderful giving you some hints but not giving away the plot. So overall, the direction, acting, setting, lighting, script and story are truly outstanding. It's a movie you think about and wanna see again to totally get it. I can recommend it very much.
Ocean's Eleven (2001)
Cool fun movie
Ocean's Eleven is a really great movie and it's so much fun to watch it! I enjoyed every minute of it. Of course not much could have gone wrong with the talents of Steven Soderbergh, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and most of the rest of the cast attached to this movie. After a string of demanding movies he now made a fun movie with an light topic. He managed to make a VERY cool movie that's just plain fun to watch. I liked the heist, it was an interesting concept. The movie has a great cinematography that shows beautiful pictures of Las Vegas. Watching this movie you feel how much fun everybody involved had making it. The actors have a great chemistry together. George Clooney was great in this movie ( and was it just me or did anybody else also expect him to say "Jack Foley" when asked for his name in the first scene??) but Brad Pitt definitely outshone him. My only complaint is that Julia Roberts' part was too small. I loved how she portrayed Tess as a hurt yet very strong woman.
Overall, this is a strong 9/10.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Very intense
This is one truly excellent and outstanding movie. Foster and Hopkins give unforgettable performances and the movie has a great direction. Jonathan Demme created such an intense atmosphere that the movie was very alive. The script was clever, too, and the camerawork was very well done.
Overall, this is one of the truly great movies that will never fade. It's right up there in my personal top ten with Fight Club and Forest Gump. Don't miss it! 10/10
Pay It Forward (2000)
Unfortunately disappointing
Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad movie like for example Blade ( SO awful). This is just a mediocre movie. If you think of the talent behind it, you might say it's disappointing. The actors are great, especially Kevin Spacey, but the interesting concept of the story develops from interesting to "why did they do it this way?". Maybe I just had to high expectations, after all this is the first movie the brilliant Mr. Spacey did after American Beauty.
So overall not a bad movie, but gee, think what they might have done with the attached talent!!
6/10.
America's Sweethearts (2001)
I like it a lot
This is a very charming and funny comedy and I had a great time watching it. The script was very funny and the actors did a wonderful job. Most of all Julia Roberts who truly shines in everything she does. She and John Cusack had great chemistry. Catherine Zeta Jones was surprisingly funny as the spoiled movie star and I enjoyed her performance more than I thought I would. Also remarkable is Hank Azaria who was really fun to watch. This is a great feel good movie and I can recommend to everybody who wants an evening of light entertainment. This movie delivers. 8.5/10
Lola rennt (1998)
Very innovative
I loved this movie for being so innovative and fresh. It's really unique and I can't think of another movie to compare it to (Sliding Doors is different although it also has the same "what if..?" concept). Franka Potente was excellent and the other actors also did a great job (especially Moritz Bleibtreu who really is one of the best actors of his generation). I liked the direction and certainly the style of the movie. It's worth your time.
Miss Congeniality (2000)
Very very funny - Sandra Bullock rules!!!
Okay, I've loved Sandra Bullock ever since the gorgeous While You Were Sleeping and I'll pay for any movie that she is in, just to see her. When I first heard the plot of this, I must admit I thought it didn't sound like such a good idea to make a movie about that topic. But I just saw it and must say I was very wrong. Yeah, the plot is a little thin, but the movie contains so many jokes and funny scenes that you don't care about that. This is the funniest feel good movie I have seen in a long time! The actors were great, especially Miss Bullock ( who is very good at comedy) and Benjamin Bratt, the chemistry between those two is great, it's obvious they are old friends. If you want a fun night out, go and see this movie, it won't disappoint you! Or rent it and enjoy it at home. The whole theater was laughing all through the movie and I think it's so cool of Sandra Bullock that she wasn't too vain to play the first scenes not looking very good. However, once she was "transformed" she was such beautiful, that sure made up for it. I think she is one of the best looking actresses nowadays, one of those few that look good without plastic surgery. For a comedy, it's a good 9/10.
The Next Best Thing (2000)
It's not THAT bad
Okay, this movie is no masterpiece. Sometimes it has really bad dialogue. BUT if you don't have too high expectations it can be an enjoyable movie for a rainy afternoon. The beginning is pretty bad and I already thought it would be a complete waste of my hard earned bucks. But I must say the movie became better and better once the child was there. Madonna is a damn fine singer but only a mediocre actress (even tough she was excellent in Evita). Rupert Everett is a very good actor but this script doesn't allow him to show that a lot. In the end, it's enjoyable and a better and more serious approach to gay parenthood and custody than one would think. I rate it 7/10.
PS: If you wanna see a movie with a similar topic but better script and acting watch The Object Of My Affection starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd.
Hannibal (2001)
Worth the hype
There are so many movies out there that get a lot of hype but are really unworthy of it. When I went to see Hannibal I was hoping that this movie would be worth the hype and I was very glad to find out it is. It's a thrilling psychological movie with great settings (who wouldn't wanna see Florence after this one?), a great screenplay and of course a gorgeous cast. Anthony Hopkins is really really great when he repeats his role of Dr. Lecter in this one. Julianne Moore had the more-than-tough task to replace the talented Jodie Foster but she really is sensational and was the best choice. Gary Oldman did a great job, too, just like Ray Liotta (his last scene in this movie, is, well..let's just say people won't forget it soon). After Hannibal I can forgive Ridley Scott for this bad bad movie "Gladiator".
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Very funny and romantic
I loved this movie! It's very funny and romantic. It's about finding your real love and overcoming all obstacles. The actors are great, Hugh Grant is a good lead and the minor characters are laugh out loud funny, too. I liked it that they had a disabled character integrated in the movie. 9/10.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Oh well...
Oh well.... I wanted to see this film with an open mind and thought that since it's the first movie to copy "Scream" and not the 100th movie to do so, it might still be fun. I was wrong. While the story and screenplay are okay, the actors and performances are terrible!! Those movies can only work if you care about the characters but I found myself thinking: "When is he finally gonna hook her (Sarah Michelle Gellar) up?". Gellar was very annoying and she was really bad in this one. None of the other actors were convincing either. Beside one or two nice scary moments (the ending was unexpected, not a new plot or something but a shock moment when you didn't expect it) this movie was boring and I found myself laughing at it in some moments.
I give it a generous 4/10.
Cast Away (2000)
Liked it a lot
This is a great movie and Tom Hanks deserves much praise for it. His acting is excellent and his physical transformation very impressive. Helen Hunt's performance was sort but especially in the second part very good. I think the movie was very realistic in the scenes of Tom on the island, overall the movie works well.
Hanging Up (2000)
Better than expected
Many people say it's a bad movie but it really isn't. I wanted to see it for Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow are in it, who I think are 2 are great actresses. However, I had rather low expectations for this one. As it turned out, it is a pretty good movie. Okay, it's no Oscar material and it's also not one of those movie that you wanna see a second time right away but it is worth your time. It has good acting in it and I enjoyed it. Don't expect something excellent and you'll have a good time watching it.
Dear God (1996)
Greg Kinnear saves it
To be honest, even tough this is a nice movie with a message, it would be just average without Greg Kinnear. He plays the crook Tom very charming and manages to keep the viewer involved. Laurie Metclaf also gets some good laughs. Overall I liked it.
Threesome (1994)
Cool movie
Okay, I saw this movie a second time last night and I must say it really has something about it. I love how natural it treats the topic of sexuality. It doesn't make a big deal out of it whether somebody prefers men or women and it's much about the feelings people have. The actors portray their characters very real and they are all very likeable. Stephen Baldwin is very funny in this one, I had to laugh so much about him!! Josh Charles plays his character very sensitive and very believable.
The end was a little sad but realistic. It would have been quite difficult to put a happier ending to this, however, I'm the happy end kind of person so it would have been nice but again, the ending is not unhappy, just a little sad. Give Threesome a try, I don't think any open-minded person would be disappointed.
Scream 2 (1997)
Good sequel
You know what they say about sequels... they are never as good as the original. But that discussion is also in the movie, proving that some sequels are even better than the original movie, like The Godfather 2. I say Scream 2 is a great sequel but not better than the original. It's not worse either. There are 2 things I like the most about this movie:
1.) Gale Weathers. Courteney Cox has created an unique character which is very different from Friends' Monica and she is very good in both parts. Gale is very sassy and even bitchy at times but even tough she is all that you still hope she'll make it. She's definitely the character I enjoyed the most in all the Scream movies.
Sorry, but number 2 contains a HUGE spoiler, you shouldn't read on if you haven't seen the movie yet. You have been warned.
2.)The killers. Well, actually just Laurie Metcalf. I mean the other guy wasn't bad or anything, but he wasn't such a big surprise. But Laurie Metcalf? When the movie began and we met her character I thought, "hey, that's Jackie, "Rosanne's" sister!" Then I thought it was too bad her character in Scream 2 is very similar to Jackie. She seemed really typecast. Her character seems insecure, not self-confident and you first think the only reason she appears in this movie is that Gale Weathers has got an ideal victim for her smart one-liners. You think her purpose is to get some laughs. But in the end, you notice she is anything but "Jackie", she is one big psycho!!! Congratulations to the casting people and producers, that was a very clever move and I think very little people could tell she was the murderer. I loved this surprising ending!!!!
As Good as It Gets (1997)
Gorgeous comedy
What a hilarious movie this is!! Seriously, this movie is one big fun ride. Jack Nicholson is giving an incredible performance as Melvin, a guy who seems to hate everybody but the waitress Carol, who can really melt his heart. The script is gorgeous, sometimes you are like: did he really say THAT??? The dialogue is so funny and the whole movie is very entertaining. So what makes this movie that good besides its' script and Jack's performance? Certainly the performances of Greg Kinnear and Helen Hunt. Greg creates an incredibly lovely character and he displays the emotions of his character Simon perfectly. I really wonder why Greg doesn't get more leads in movies, he is a very fine actor. I loved his "Simon". Helen is also convincing as a struggling single Mom who is one of the little people who dare to tell Melvin what they really think of his behavior. This movie is about characters and all the characters have been developed very well. That's what makes the movie work. It takes enough time to show the character developments and I really gotta say that
this movie is pretty much as good as it gets!!
Nine Months (1995)
Surprisingly good
I happened to see this movie on TV and didn't expect to watch it until the end. But the beginning was really funny and I'm glad I watched the whole movie, as it has many laughs and feelings. The actors were very funny and the director knows how to do his job. Especially Robin Williams was awesome! Really enjoyable!
In & Out (1997)
Laugh out loud funny
This is such a funny movie, I really laughed my butt off. The script is well written and has great one-liners. The cast is incredibly funny; Kevin Kline as a man who discovers his homosexuality, Joan Cusack (who seems to be able to play any character) as his terrible fiancee, Tom Selleck as the love interest and Matt Dillon as a parody on those many Hollywood studs are all wonderful. This movie is light, pleasing and has also the message of tolerance in it: 2 thumbs up!
Stepmom (1998)
Very good drama
This is a really great movie with wonderful performances. Julia Roberts is very good and believable, just like Susan Sarandon, Ed Harris and the kids. Even tough this movie is a drama it always has some laughs in a while which is very good and the laughs are always appropriate. The script is handling the topic very well and I love the theme song "Ain't no mountain high enough". Don't miss it!
The Perfect Storm (2000)
Great summer movie!!!
This is definitely a typical summer event movie, but a really good one. The movie takes enough time to introduce the characters and then the storm comes up and it's amazing what they did to create those waves. The special effects are stunning and the acting, especially by George Clooney is also very good and believable. Mr. Clooney plays a totally ordinary guy and has nothing Hollywood glamour like about the character, very well done!
Overall I give it a 8/10 for it entertained me very well and the story was interesting and they actually had a script in an event movie!
