Secret défense (1998)
Modern Electra
Modern version of the Elektra-myth, keeping rather close to the original (if you look closely), but making sense, in the typical Rivette way, also as a wild story of crime, revenge and love apart from the myth. Sandrine Bonnaire alone is worth the film.
Marked Woman (1937)
Rather formulaic Bette-Davis-film
A story about a number of nightclub hostesses who first cooperate with gangster boss John Vanning (in real life: Lucky Luciano). Mary Dwight (Bette Davis), though, first loses her sister's respect and then her sister loses her life, killed by Vanning. Mary then is ready to cooperate with the police detective (Humphrey Bogart). Rather formulaic Bette-Davis-film in an unusual night club environment, which finally turns out to end with moral and judicial correctness. It's not bad, and the 'Marked Women' do have impressive performances, but everything very soon is too obvious.
