The horse whisperer works his true magic behind the camera
2 February 1999
"The Horse Whisperer" is an outstanding picture. Robert Redford creates such sympathetic characters to watch and portrays them amongst the beautiful montana scenery. Much to advantage, he takes time to develop his characters and supplies them with an old-fashioned love story. The main actress here, Kristin Scott Thomas, does a wonderful job in portraying a mother who's 14 year old daughter was severely injured in a horrible accident when riding a horse named "Pilgrim". Thomas seeks the help of a "horse whisperer" (robert redford) to "soothe" Pilgrim and to help her tormented daughter. Thomas soon develops a thing for Redford but is subdued due to the fact that she is married to Sam Neill. This movie deserves to be recognized for the upcoming 98 oscars. The cinematography is exquisite; there are no flaws in any of the dialogue or the character's reasoning; just a lovely film to look at. It is so great to see a romance grow like this without exploiting any of it's central characters. A heartfelt drama worth commending.

54 (1998)
9/10
While getting slammed by critics, 54 offers fun, summer entertainment.
31 August 1998
I enjoyed this film. Yes, it got slammed by critics. Yes, it's a little slack on details and some might consider it dull. While even I hoped for a little more of life inside the club than it actually projected I still amazingly liked it. Maybe, because it was incredibly short and light -weight summer entertainment or because it had a constant beat to it; either way I still enjoyed it. I'm not recommending this, even though i liked it myself; because most people won't have interest in seeing a movie on 54 and especially after reading the terrible reviews about it. The truth is Mike Myers was good as Steve Rubell and the rest give reasonably good performances;enough to believe at least. This film was incredibly low on sex and drugs considering it was the late 70's in the notorious Studio 54. I was a little surprised that the film didn't ever show rubell's co-partner Ian Shroeger. If you're expecting a strict copy of the real 54, this will probably disappoint you. The main story line is featured on a young adult who rises as a bartender in the club and how his life changes in all aspects; his connection with his family deteriorates, his drug use rises along with his sexual activity. But there is really hardly much sex in it too make it possibly offending. I love how the beginning and the ending is portrayed. The film was cut short 30 minutes after it was shown to a test audience-which disliked various parts and the ending i believe. Whether it was cut for the good or the bad I give this film an 8 out of ten or a B+ or better yet, 3 stars out of 4.

Boogie Nights (1997)
Fantastic use of camerawork and of pop culture, get ready for a movie that will make you laugh, tense, cry, and make you squeamish
5 August 1998
Boogie Nights is an excellent picture. You don't have to have be a part of the whole 70's scene either to appreciate it. The title is very misleading to some who do not generally read reviews beforehand. This movie is an exhilerating piece on a late 70's-early 80's porn star. Yes, it sounds like a very simple plot and much gratutious sex. But it's so much more. While you may be thrown off by the violence and the sexuality Boogie Nights is nowhere near pointless. It features great acting all across the board-even Reynolds is very sympathetic. Some advice though, seeing this movie more than once is a good idea. It grows on you. This movie takes you to the deep down threshold of your heart. It shows you the rise of a porn star and the downhill spiral that follows it. Even in some of the sleaziest of characters can a human being be reached out to. Rent this one tonight - and who cares about all that talk about the use of prosthetics anyway. This is the pulp fiction of the 70's porn industry, "a low class subject made in a high class way".
