If you’ve ever found yourself questioning the nature of your reality, you’ve arrived at the right list. One of the reasons mind-benders are perennially popular is their versatility. Some incorporate elements of science fiction and horror, while others are just about ordinary people getting into extraordinary situations. It’s a genre that’s open to interpretation; the only real requirement is that they make you think.
There are so many engrossing mind-benders that we couldn’t limit ourselves to only shows or just movies, which means you’re getting recommendations for both. Our picks include the groundbreaking anthology Black Mirror, time-loop series Russian Doll and the hallucinatory film Spiderhead, among others. There are plenty of options here to keep you busy — and keep you guessing — for a while.

Welcome to another rundown of every stat released by the TV insights company Samba TV. Below, we’ll run through all their released viewing stats (whether through their socials or through somewhere else) for Netflix’s newly released movies for the past three years.
How does Samba TV get its data? As described on its own website, the company tracks what appears on the users’ TV by reading pixels and utilizing this data for personalized recommendations on the TV or mobile apps connected to the television.
It’s also important to note that Samba TV stats typically only cover US households.
Of course, Netflix itself releases excellent viewing stats every Tuesday via its top 10 site. However, more data is always good, and it’s good to see shows and movies benchmarked against each other from a company like Samba TV.

Sometimes, when you’re looking to be entertained, only a thriller will cut it. If you ever find yourself feeling like life is getting inexplicably dark, and morality is becoming more ambiguous, immersing yourself in a tense world of serial killers, terrorists, and crooked sleazebags of all kinds is a pretty great form of escapism. The genre is broad enough to encompass a wide variety of tropes, so you could probably watch thrillers forever and never get bored.
Netflix’s thriller offerings are surprisingly well-rounded, offering a good mix of undisputed classics from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Greengrass as well as newer indie flicks that you may have missed. Whether you’re looking to revisit an old favorite, fill an embarrassing gap in your movie knowledge, or find something new and cutting-edge that will blow your mind, the genre always has something for you. Amid an advertising downturn, media planners will be making their more selective bets after attending the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Newfronts this year, set for May 1-4 in New York. As executives ready their pitches, here are a few key questions for the main presenters.
Amazon
It’s already an advertising powerhouse, quietly generating more than $37 billion in ad revenue last year. But most of that ad revenue was tied to its retail business, where sellers are fighting to get in front of consumers. The Newfronts are more focused on video, where Amazon’s live sports properties and Freevee free streaming service are expected to have top billing. Thursday Night Football has quickly become the most popular live-streamed programming available, and the company is betting that its video ad business has room to expand. And there’s Twitch and the Fire TV platform, which also are expected to play a part in the pitch.

There’s no denying Chris Hemsworth is one of the biggest stars in the world. However, when you take away his work as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his filmography has quite a few misses. There’s his work in the “Ghostbusters” reboot in 2016, then you have the failed attempt to reboot the “Men in Black” franchise. Let’s not forget about the middling “Spiderhead” and “12 Strong.” But there is one shining star in his non-Marvel work—the high-octane action film, “Extraction.” Now, it looks like Hemsworth, along with filmmaker Sam Hargrave and producers/writers, the Russo Brothers are ready to turn that hit Netflix film into an official franchise with an upcoming sequel.

Robert De Niro is the latest movie star to make the move to TV. Netflix announced Wednesday that the Oscar-winning film legend will star in and executive-produce his first television project, the conspiracy thriller limited series “Zero Day,” from creators Eric Newman (“Narcos”) and Noah Oppenheim (“Jackie”).
“‘Zero Day’ asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control?” goes the official logline for the series. “And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”
Plot and character details were not revealed.
The limited series has a muscular writing-producing team behind it. Eric Newman is one of Netflix’s go-to producers. His credits for the streamer include “The Watcher,” the “Narcos” franchise, and the upcoming “Griselda” on the TV side,...

A post shared by Chris Hemsworth (@chrishemsworth)
Sometimes it pays to have a superhero in the house. On Friday, Dec. 9, Chris Hemsworth shared a video of his wife, model and actor Elsa Pataky, sitting on his shoulders in order to put the star on their enormous Christmas tree on Instagram. Since the Thor actor is over six feet tall, you might think Pataky could easily reach the top, but as the Marvel actor's video shows, putting the finishing touch on their tree was no easy task.
While it's unclear exactly how tall the couple's tree is, Pataky still couldn't reach the top while sitting on her husband's shoulders. Undeterred, Hemsworth gets creative as he first attempts to jump and then gets on his tiptoes to help his wife reach the top. "You can do it, Elsa!" he encourages her as they both struggle to make the tree cooperate.

Produced by See-Saw Films, Anonymous Content and Blue Tongue Films, the film takes a very different tack from the real events. It changes names, adds characters and refers only briefly to the actual crime,...

Being featured on the Netflix top 10 used to mean something.
It was a useful list that audiences could look to for recommendations. These were films you could trust to be good.
Needless to say, a lot has changed since then. Now, more often than not, reaching number one on Netflix isn’t necessarily something to be proud of.
As the hate-watching phenomenon continues to grow – in which viewers will binge watch something they admit is terrible – popularity on Netflix becomes less and less synonymous with quality.
We’ve rounded up a list of eight films that did spectacularly well for the streaming giant... but bombed with audiences, according to their Rotten Tomato ratings.

Miles Teller’s maiden SNL monologue was largely one of self-deprecation.

Miles Teller is reflecting on his high-flying summer in the promos for Saturday Night Live’s upcoming season 48 premiere.
The Top Gun: Maverick star makes his debut as host of the long-running NBC comedy series on Saturday’s episode, which also features musical guest Kendrick Lamar. In video clips shared ahead of the premiere, SNL castmember and Bros actor Bowen Yang asks Teller to assess his summer.
“Really great,” Teller responds. This leads Yang to gripe, “Mine was a bust, but whatever. I’m happy to be back.”
Teller continues, “Yeah, I had a hit movie.” But Yang quickly cuts him off and is clearly more interested in sharing details of his own experiences, including claiming that his therapist describes him as having “emotional inertia.”
In other spots promoting the episode, Yang teases Teller about his name sounding like a colloquial description of an odometer,...

"Saturday Night Live" will return to NBC for its 48th season starting on October 1, 2022. There's been a lot of activity behind the scenes with the loss of eight total cast members. The end of season 47 saw the exit of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, and Pete Davidson. More recently, series regulars Alex Moffatt and Melissa Villaseñor left the series along with featured player Aristotle Athari. Finally, this week brought news that "Popstar" co-star Chris Redd was leaving after five seasons on the series.
But the show must go on, and along with four new featured players joining the series, "SNL" has officially announced who will be hosting the first three episodes out of the gate for season 48. There's a "Top Gun: Maverick" star, a "Harry Potter" franchise co-star, and one of the biggest hip hop stars in the world.

Life Is Beautiful kicked off on Friday in the heart of Las Vegas, with thousands of festival-goers scurrying to the Sin City for the buzzy three-day show that turns Vegas’s eclectic downtown into a psychedelic desert amusement park.
The Life Is Beautiful footprint takes up 18 blocks of downtown Las Vegas, an area of town once known for cheap drinks, seedy motels and a string of pawn shops. However, this slice of Vegas has turned into a hipster haven known for funky art installations, home-grown farm-to-table restaurants and, cheap drinks.

No one could have predicted that "Top Gun: Maverick," a sequel to a nearly 40-year-old movie, would wind up becoming not only the biggest movie of the summer, but the biggest movie of 2022 so far, pulling in 679 million domestic (more than "Avengers: Infinity War") and counting. It is a testament to the sheer power of spectacle director Joseph Kosinski and Tom Cruise manage to infuse into the movie, turning what could have easily been a cash grab, Americana-filled nostalgia play into a huge movie event the likes of which we haven't seen since before the pandemic.

Viewership patterns for summer tentpoles on Disney+ and Netflix — both of which are poised to introduce cheaper tiers with advertising — suggest that the services would be wise to tread lightly as they roll out their top-tier fare across ad-free and ad-backed tiers.
That’s one of the key takeaways from a new report from analytics firm Samba TV. The second-quarter installment of The State of Viewership analyzes some 24 billion hours of linear and streaming viewing in the U.S. (See select charts below.)
The company found significant front-loading of viewership for marquee titles. By the 30th day top titles were available, they had generated 86 of their 50-day viewership. About 2.9 million households watched Stranger Things Season 4 in its first four days online, with the total rising to 4.6 million households by Day 15.

Netflix’s dreary 200 million franchise hopeful The Gray Man deserves at least one compliment: it begins with relative finesse. Recruited out of prison as a tattooed, bleach-blonde lowlife in 2003 by CIA handler Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), we instantly catch up with Six (Ryan Gosling) eighteen years later on a botched mission in Bangkok. His conscience unfortunately coming into play over an assignment to take out his colleague, he soon finds himself on the run alongside fellow agent Dani (Ana De Armas) as their knowledge of nefarious CIA actions becomes too great. On their trail is Hansen (Chris Evans), a sociopathic company man we see introduced conducting torture, alongside dozens of international assassins out to collect the bounty on Six’s head.
Gosling, who’s always likable even when a little smug, just can’t help seeming above the whole enterprise, no matter how many nice clothes he’s given the opportunity to wear.

Spiderhead is a 2022 American science fiction psychological thriller film directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett. The story follows inmates in a luxurious prison who participate in experiments involving mind-altering drugs. The drugs allow the inmates to experience different emotions and sensations, but also have dangerous side effects. The inmates must decide whether to continue taking the drugs or face the consequences of their actions. The Review Geek published a review of the film and commended Hemsworth saying, “Still, Hemsworth has fun with his role, so he’s enjoyable to watch, despite the

It’s getting easier to predict which movies will become seemingly out-of-nowhere successes on Netflix. While on the television side of the spectrum, flashy new series or returning hits routinely become the top streaming shows, the calculus doesn’t always add up the same way for the streamer’s film library. For instance, this week one of the top films on Netflix was 2018’s 12 Strong, a Chris Hemsworth-led war film set in Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.
When the film was released, it received middling reviews from critics and an unspectacular 70 million at the box office, about half of what Hemsworth’s latest film, Thor: Love and Thunder, made in one weekend. So why is this recent, but mostly forgotten film getting heavy play on the streaming giant? Because of its star.

The Netflix thriller "Spiderhead" is one hell of a trip. Starring Miles Teller and Chris Hemsworth, "Spiderhead" tells the story of a unique, state-of-the-art prison in which inmates volunteer for a variety of clinical trials for new drugs in exchange for time off their sentence.

But obviously, all is not what it seems.

Netflix's "Spiderhead" focuses on a top secret facility where convicted felons volunteer for drug trials to escape time in a traditional prison. The film offers a roller coaster ride of emotions thanks to tactless comments, awkward dancing, and handy dandy MobiPacks provided by Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth). Abnesti is the villain of the film, a psychopath who gets off on manipulating emotions and commanding obedience, but that doesn't mean he can't bring a little humor to the story.

When crafting a villain both onscreen and off, it's important to remember a couple of things. Villains are the protagonists of their own stories. In a villain's mind, their actions are justifiable. While the audience may not agree with their methods or reasoning, the villain believes their decisions are rooted in logic. They are in the right, and what we perceive as the hero is an obstacle for the villain to dismantle. For an actor, it can be easy to forget this when building a villainous performance, especially if it's their first time playing a baddie.

Chris Hemsworth's "Spiderhead" character, Steve Abnesti, is a distinctly modern antagonist. He's a CEO who hides his sociopathic outlook behind a casual smile and dudebro attitude, assuring his employees he's "just like them" while not-so-subtly lording his power over those around him. He recalls Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac) from "Ex Machina," down to the pair's shared fondness for impromptu dancing.

Photo: ‘Spiderhead’ A Brief Overview ‘Spiderhead’ is a lighthearted take on the thriller genre while encompassing the themes of science fiction. The movie is based on the 2010 short story, ‘Escape from Spiderhead’, which was published in The New Yorker by George Saunders. Many great people behind the film such as the writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who were the writers of ‘Deadpool’, adapted the short story into a screenplay soon after. In addition, the film was directed by Joseph Kosinski who worked on recent films such as ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Tron: Legacy’. The film’s concept is dystopian that mimics the antics of the short story as Saunder fuses the ideas of dark humor with unfortunate situations. Although it contains the liveliness of the original story, it lacks certain aspects that are needed to stick the landing. Related video: Full Commentary - Cast & Crew Spills Secrets on Making...

Last week, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Disney/19.99) was the big new release for home platforms. While we have no reports yet for its impact on Disney+ streaming subscribers, on the PVOD charts, the Marvel Cinematic Universe entry currently sits at #1 on both Vudu and Google Play and #2 at iTunes (where it had been in first its initial four days).
Otherwise, this week’s charts suggest a continuing a trend detected last week: outside of the week’s hottest new title, consumers are actively looking for films available to view for 5.99 or less, rather than opting for higher priced PVOD picks.
Case in point? “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” (Lionsgate/5.99). The Nicolas Cage-starring meta comedy, which sees the actor starring as a version of himself (complete with winking and nodding at many of his on-screen characters), is currently #1 at iTunes, fifth on both Vudu and Google Play.
