This isn’t a meteorology blog. We’re under no obligation to inform you that–despite a historically slow ski season start–the snow now falling across Northern Utah’s Wasatch Valley is voluminous and omnipresent. All the better excuse for sequestering oneself inside the weatherproofed walls of Park City’s myriad Sundance screening venues. And whether you’re a Sundance programmer, filmmaker, critic, industry wonk or civilian attendee, one thing is certain: there are currently a lot of granola bars getting smushed in a lot of people’s pockets.
Of course, our favorite among these snowblind wretches are our own Film Independent Fellows proudly debuting their new works at the festival. And by “Fellows” here we of course mean filmmakers who have been directly supported by Film Independent’s Lab Programs, Project Involve, Fast Track and Fiscal Sponsorship programs, as well as Emerging Filmmaker Award winners and grant recipients.

How does one create a film festival during an actors strike? Middleburg Film Festival executive director Susan Koch explains she’s approached programming the Virginia fest in the same manner as she has always done. “We looked for the strongest films and a wide range of films that represent diverse voices and ones we feel will expand our view of the world,” she tells Variety.
Now in its 11th year, the festival continues to be a carefully curated weekend of films and conversations, including many of the year’s buzziest titles. “Rustin,” a Netflix biopic of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin that was directed by George C. Wolfe, will open the four-day fest. Wolfe will receive the festival’s Impact Award for his work in bringing the impactful civil and LGBTQ rights story to the screen. Searchlight’s “Poor Things” and A24’s “Priscilla” are also among films screening from Oct.

Locarno — Two movie projects which capture best the brewing revolution in Latin American filmmaking walked off with the biggest plaudits at this year’s Locarno Open Doors prize ceremony on Tuesday.
Both underscore the mindset reset among cineasts – their questioning of received wisdom accompanied by the explosion in invention being brought to low-budget filmmaking in the region.
Directed by Nicaragua’s Gloria Carrión and produced by Leonor Zuñiga, “Pantasma” took the biggest cash prize on offer, CHF25,000 from Visions Sud Est, for a project which begs to differ from Nicaragua’s Contras were U.S.-backed mercenaries.
“Pantasma” presents a more nuanced vision, based on the memoirs of former Sandinista Felix Vigil and his dawning realization, during the Sandinista-Contra War that the revolution was “fighting Nicaraguan peasants and not paid mercenaries [whch] will make him question everything he believes in,” Carrión has noted.

Writer/director Romano Scavolini’s 1981 film Nightmare, a.k.a. Nightmares in a Damaged Brain, stirred up a lot of controversy when it was released. It was given an X rating in the US, banned as a video nasty in the UK, and a couple distribution executives did prison time for putting the film out in the UK. Plus special effects legend Tom Savini, who is credited on the film, denied having any involvement with it. And now Severin Films is honoring the movie with a three disc 4K Uhd release! Copies will be available for pre-order on the Severin webstore when their summer sale launches this Friday.

As The Flash hit the midpoint of its final season, a visit from Nia Nal aka Dreamer brought much drama, but also some updates on Supergirl and a few of her superfriends.
For starters — and as set up during Ryan Wilder aka Batwoman’s recent visit to Central City — Nia (played by Supergirl‘s Nicole Maines) showing up unannounced at Central City Citizen Media to ask Iris for help wasn’t entirely random. Because apparently, Iris took Ryan up on her offer and recently — albeit off-screen, grrr — joined Ryan, Nia, Kara Danvers/Supergirl and her sister Alex/Sentinel for mimosa brunch.

Directed by Arthur Ripley, "Thunder Road" is a classic crime film from 1958 that focuses on Lucas Doolin, a Korean War veteran who delivers moonshine in rural mountain states such as North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. He tries to keep the family business afloat while evading law enforcement. The film features thrilling hot rod chases and action sequences that inspired Bruce Springsteen's song "Thunder Road."
It was a very personal project for the high-demand actor Robert Mitchum, who also served as the producer, conceived the story, and wrote some songs. "Thunder Road" was also a family affair. The role of Robin Doolin, Lucas' naive younger brother and mechanic who wants to be a part of the dangerous, fast-paced moonshining business, eventually went to Robert Mitchum's son James Mitchum.

Hugh Grant laughed about his infamous 1995 sex scandal with the hosts of US talk show The View on Thursday (16 March).
Grant was arrested by Los Angeles police for participating in “lewd conduct” in a public place with a sex worker named Divine Brown. He was in a long-term relationship with actor/model Liz Hurley at the time.
On The View, host Sunny Hostin asked the 62-year-old actor about his campaigns against the British tabloid press.
“Everyone thinks, ‘Oh, well he’s just bitter because he got arrested with a hooker in 1995,’” Grant said to riotous laughter from the hosts and studio audience.
Hostin’s co-host Whoopi Goldberg interjected: “But you know what, really, who hasn’t?”
The actor then continued: “But actually it had nothing to do with that because that was never uncovered by tabloids. It was that the bloody police gave everyone the information. It was nothing to do with that.

It's been a little over a week since we learned that actress and four-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Olivia Newton-John had passed away at the age of 73. While known for her performances in films like "Xanadu" and "It's My Party," Newton-John became a cinematic icon for her turn as Sandy Olsson in 1978's "Grease." As a way to honor the movie musical legend, AMC Theatres is bringing "Grease" back to the big screen, with a portion of all ticket sales going to charity.
"Grease" will be available in 135 different AMC locations around the country with 5 tickets, and 1 from each ticket sale will be donated to breast cancer research foundations through AMC's charitable fund AMC Cares. Olivia Newton-John was very open about her battle with breast cancer, which was first diagnosed in 1992. In 2017, Newton-John announced that the cancer had returned for the third time, and had spread to her spine. AMC CEO Adam Aron...

The acclaimed cast of "Little Miss Sunshine" all took their roles very seriously, but some may have taken things a little too far. There's a long history of actors dedicating themselves completely to their roles without incident, with only a few notable cases where a performer stepped over the line and put themselves and others in harm's way. Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris never could have anticipated that Greg Kinnear would take things quite so far and put his castmates at risk.
Kinnear stars in the hit dramedy as Richard, the father of a dysfunctional family that includes his brooding step-son Dwayne, played by Paul Dano, his father Edwin, played by Alan Arkin, his wife Sheryl, played by Toni Collette, and his tenacious daughter Olive, played by Abigail Breslin in her breakout role. The family packs into a van to transport Olive across the country to a national beauty pageant.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for episodes 1 and 2 of "Obi-Wan Kenobi."
The first two episodes of "Obi-Wan Kenobi" has a fair share of surprise cameos and storylines, but none quite as delightful and sweet as the introduction of a young Leia Organa, played by Vivien Lyra Blair. While "Star Wars" fans were expecting Grant Feely's Luke Skywalker to make an appearance, since he'd already been revealed in the trailers, Leia's presence was a relatively surprising storyline to follow, which proves to be crucial in steering Obi-Wan's (Ewan McGregor) trajectory forward.

In “Showing Up,” Michelle Williams stars as Lizzy, a Portland-based sculptor for whom little seems to go right in the week leading up to a big solo show. Kelly Reichardt’s latest film takes us to modern-day Portland for a playful comedy about the realities of visual artists.
As Lizzy, Williams is frazzled and grumpy, stern and flustered. She meets compliments with a downcast gaze, doubtful, perhaps, that she’s worthy of them. She lives alone with a very good bad cat, working on figurines of young women, while her colleagues drink and hang out during their off-hours.
As a day job, she works at an arts college she once attended as an assistant to her mother, who she must ask for days off to work on her art, while her father (the great Judd Hirsch) entertains guests he barely knows. Her brother Sean lives a sheltered life on his own,...

The drama is flowing on Dynasty Season 5!
It sure sounds like things are going to get crazier on Dynasty Season 5 Episode 5, airing March 25 on The CW at 9 p.m.
"Fallon (Elizabeth Gillies) and Liam (Adam Huber) go to work on their new plan," reads the official logline, hinting that there's some unity between the show's central couple.
If you watch Dynasty online, you know their relationship hit another snag in the form of their chat about having children.
The pair have worked on their relationship of late, and hopefully, they are able to navigate this latest hurdle in a mature way.
The show has a real opportunity to show that the continued tension between Fallon and Liam is not phoned in to increase the drama.
"As Sam (Rafael de la Fuente) works on his own work/life balance, a guest at La Mirage gives him something to think about," the logline adds.

Dynasty Season 4 Episode 22 will conclude the current season of the soapy drama, and it's going to be a lot of fun.
"Blake (Grant Show) and Cristal (Daniella Alonso) work together on the new obstacles threatening Blake's senatorial campaign," reads the official logline from the network.
If you watch Dynasty online, you know the series has laned heavily on Blake's pursuit of power on a political front.
With the season finale upon us, we can expect some wild developments on the back of it.
We'll probably also get a throwback to a moment from the past for good measure.
But, what will happen between Fallon, Liam, and Eva?
"Fallon (Elizabeth Gillies) turns to Amanda (guest star Eliza Bennett) for help regarding Liam (Adam Huber) and their marriage."
We know Eva is ready to change everything for Liam and Fallon, thanks to her manipulation.

The response of Australian cinemas to the pandemic has inspired new research from the Queensland University of Technology (Qut) about the connection between audiences and the big screen experience.
Dr Ruari Elkington and Dr Tess Van Hemert have received funding through the institution’s Digital Media Research Centre Grant Development Support Scheme to further develop Resilient Screens: Investigating the value of Australian Cinema Exhibition into an Australian Research Council Linkage application.
The pair began working on the project early last year after seeing a blog post from Palace Cinemas about the closure of cinemas due to Covid.
Entitled The Cinema: Why we love it, the post reflected on the act of going to the movies while providing reassurance that the industry would survive the challenges stemming from the pandemic.

Ava Duvernay’s distribution, arts and advocacy collective Array has partnered with Google to launch a new feature film grant benefiting emerging creatives from underrepresented communities.
The filmmaker selected for the Array + Google Feature Film Grant will receive $500,000 to fund their first full-length feature film. Additionally, the project’s production will be staffed by Array crew, the collective’s inclusive hiring database for below-the-line crew members.
“Having started my filmmaking journey by self-funding projects, this is a full-circle moment,” DuVernay said, announcing the partnership. “I’m pleased to partner with Google and Array’s grant advisory committee to identify an emerging writer/director to bring their vision to the screen. Inclusive storytelling is at the heart of Array’s mission and we’re proud to also provide access to Array Crew in order to further ensure that the set of the grantee’s film reflects the full array of the world around us.
