‘Megalopolis’ Is Talk Of Cannes
A more straightforward affair: After a tense build-up shaped by endless rumors of an imminent #MeToo expose and a potential labor strike, the first week of this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been a more straightforward affair. The most controversial event so far has been Thursday evening’s premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s highly-anticipated Megalopolis. The critical response has been predominantly positive, with some very high highs and inevitably a few low lows. Deadline’s Damon Wise praised the movie, calling it a “mad modern masterwork that reinvents the possibilities of cinema”. He said the film is “something of a mess; unruly, exaggerated, and drawn to pretension like a moth to a flame. It is also, however, a pretty stunning achievement, the...

British director Paul Andrew Williams’ next film is psychological thriller The Nest, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Andrea Riseborough.
Paul Andrew Williams is synonymous with gritty, low budget British filmmaking. Bursting onto the scene in 2006 with London to Brighton, he quickly built up an impressive filmography including showcasing the glorious double act of Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith in horror comedy The Cottage, home invasion horror Cherry Tree Lane and a change of direction with sweet musical comedy Song For Marion, which starred Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave. He returned to his roots in 2021 with dark thriller Bull, a revenge story featuring a powerhouse performance by Neil Maskell. It’s a tough watch but a terrific film, it is currently streaming on Netflix.
Williams will with Redgrave for his next film The Nest, the synopsis reads as follows:

The film will chart the story of two neighbours who strike up an unlikely friendship, sometimes to the disapproval of others around them. Seeing the lack of care that her elderly neighbour Elsie (Redgrave) is receiving from so called professionals, Colleen (Riseborough) takes it upon herself to care for her. However, Colleen’s intentions may not be what they seem.
Filming is due to begin this summer in Yorkshire in the UK, with Amp launching sales in Cannes.
Pic is produced by Dominic Tighe (Giant Productions) and Marie-Elena Dyche (Meraki Films). Executive producers are Eilene Davidson (Eilene Davidson Productions), Naomi Despres and Michèle Marshall (Desmar Films), Caroline Cooper Charles (Screen Yorkshire), Bruno Wang and Jonathan Zimmern.

Stars: Olivia Nikkanen, Naomi Grace, Jayce Bartok, Devin Druid, Emilia McCarthy, Amy Hargreaves, Catherine Curtin | Written by Erik Bloomquist, Carson Bloomquist | Directed by Erik Bloomquist
The Bloomquist brothers, director Erik and co-writer Carson are back with their second film this year, following up their summer camp horror She Came from the Woods with Founders Day. Billed as a political slasher has an interesting history to it. The original concept dates back to 2011, and a script that was considered for inclusion in Project Greenlight. They even made a conceptual trailer for it before the project collapsed. And what better time to revive it than now in a time of political division and violence?
In the town of Fairwood, two things are fast approaching, its 300th anniversary and the election of its next mayor. The race is a contentious one, the first image we see is of a campaign sign being destroyed.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Boys in the Boat (George Clooney)
This is, from start to finish, an underdog sports picture. Edgerton puts a welcome spin on the gruff-but-caring coach archetype, and Turner does the same with his lead character. Soft-spoken, stern, and handsome, this is a role someone like Ronald Reagan would have excelled at bringing to the screen some 80 years ago; Turner, luckily, is more interesting to look at and a better actor. Alexandre Desplat’s score is maybe the most playful thing about this film, and it works when it needs to. The race sequences are unquestionably Boys‘ highlight, Clooney making use of zoom lenses and well-placed cameras to capture the speed and fluidity of each competition. There is a real tension mined in these scenes,...

Sean Durkin's The Nest ends confusingly, particularly regarding a plot point regarding a horse.
The Nest - first released in 2020 - is now streaming on Netflix in the U.S., telling the story of married couple Rory (played by Jude Law) and Allison O'Hara (Carrie Coon) who unravel after picking things up and moving to England from New York City.
Written and directed by Iron Claw filmmaker Sean Durkin, The Nest is a harrowing tale of a dissolving romance and how people can slither and snake their way to the top.

Every now and then an esteemed actor from the posh theater world decides to make the move over to movies and television to slum it with us nerds. When Carrie Coon did so in 2014 with dual TV/movie roles in Gone Girl and The Leftovers, the unwashed entertainment masses all had the same reaction: “Now where have you been all our lives?!?”
After a successful career treading the boards on Broadway, Coon is now a pop culture mainstay and we couldn’t be happier about it. The Copley, Ohio-native absolutely shines in any role she takes, no matter how prominent or minor. From Nora Durst on The Leftovers to Gloria Burgle on Fargo season 3 and beyond, Coon quite simply goes hard in the paint.
Next up, Coon will be introduced to an even wider audience than ever before with the announcement that she’ll be headlining season 3 of HBO’s The White Lotus.

I was shocked to learn from writer-director Sean Durkin that he hadn’t watched Raging Bull’s legendary commentary track with Martin Scorsese and his longtime editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, before stepping into the ring himself to direct his third feature, the sports drama The Iron Claw. Durkin’s concern with masculine melodrama, sullenly repressed in life and violently expressed in competition, has the aura of true discipleship. But, it turns out, absorbing the lessons of a film without intensely studying it is more in line with Durkin’s style of feeling his way through a project, as he described in our interview.
In The Iron Claw, Durkin locates the story of a gender and a nation within the story of wrestling’s Von Erichs. The quartet of brothers, anchored by Zac Efron’s eldest Kevin, strive to rise to the top of their sport as well as out of their domineering father’s shadow.

This post contains spoilers for "The Iron Claw."
Three things in life will consistently make me cry: Dogs being reunited with their owners after long periods of absence, when the Iron Giant says "Superman" at the end of "The Iron Giant," and professional wrestlers crying. Needless to say, "The Iron Claw" was guaranteed to obliterate me. Based on the tragic true story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty, Sean Durkin's latest feature is not just a devastating folk tale of an American Shakespearean tragedy, but makes a case for becoming the best film ever made about the world of professional wrestling. As I wrote in my review of the film, "'The Iron Claw' is an emotionally eviscerating watch anchored by one of the best ensemble casts of the year."

Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” is less Christmas crowdpleaser than family downer, but this skillfully directed portrait of the tragic rise, fall, and resurrection of the Von Erich wrestling family dynasty should be a holiday hit for A24. Its stacked cast includes a Hollywood favorite with a beloved risen-from-the-ashes story of his own (Zac Efron), at least one super hot name right now (Jeremy Allen White), and a fast-rising indie darling on his way to becoming a household name (Harris Dickinson).

Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw picks up right where the acclaimed filmmaker’s first two films left off. 2011’s Martha Marcy May Marlene and 2020’s The Nest both received critical praise, as did the staggering performances of Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, respectively. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Zac Efron is now receiving the best reviews of his career in Durkin’s latest well-received drama about the tragic true story of the Von Erich wrestling family.
The A24 film centers on Efron’s Kevin Von Erich, as he’s the sole survivor of a real-life nuclear family that once included five other sons: Jack Jr, David (Harris Dickinson), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), Mike (Stanley Simons) and Chris. In a tough decision, Durkin cut the youngest brother, Chris, from the proceeding, since there’s only so much trauma an audience can handle in one two-hour-plus sitting.

Plot: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, part of a professional wrestling dynasty in the early 1980s, as they endure tragedy and triumph under the shadow of their domineering father and coach.
Review: The Iron Claw is a film that a lot of people in the movie and professional wrestling communities have been looking forward to. Especially after the episode of Dark Side of the Ring on the Von Erich “curse”, fascination with the subject has soared like a Kevin Von Erich flying crossbody. For me, too, having loved professional wrestling since I was a child, and having seen a lot of the Von Erich tragedy play out, I wondered how in the world Sean Durkin could turn this into a story that audiences could enjoy.

While it’s true that insects thrive in warmer climates, They Nest dreamed up a species that can withstand the cold, not to mention turn humans into walking roach motels. Despite its dead-of-winter setting, USA Network aired the debut of New Zealand filmmaker Ellory Elkayem — later retitled Creepy Crawlers on home video — in late July of 2000. By then, the cable channel had unleashed several other “when animals attack” telefilms; feral cats (Strays), displaced serpents (Rattled) and one radioactive pooch (Atomic Dog) all took a bite out of mankind. Their next creature-feature, however, would be the first to truly get under people’s skin.

Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin’s retelling of the cursed Von Erich family, starring Zac Efron, is missing some signature moves
The Iron Claw, written and directed by Sean Durkin, takes its name from the signature move by Fritz Von Erich, the wrestling persona created by Jack Adkisson in the 1950s: an unmovable grip on the face, tight pressure on both temples, paralyzing an opponent to the ground. The move would certainly hurt if applied with effort but, as with most of professional wrestling, it’s hard to tell the line between feat of athleticism and performance, real pressure and theatrics.
Which should be interesting territory for Durkin, whose two previous features, the eerie cult psycho-drama Martha Marcy May Marlene and 80s-set The Nest, are unnerving tangles of the real and imagined, strange comminglings of the supernatural, psychological and social. Like The Nest, The Iron Claw depicts the...

This review contains spoilers for "The Iron Claw."
The world of professional wrestling is filled with enough tragedy to constitute its own dedicated documentary series about it, but there has never been a story of familial annihilation quite like the Von Erichs. Often compared to the Kennedy family, the Von Erichs were/are a dynasty of wrestling superstars and the subject of unimaginable despair. Telling their story outside of a documentary setting seems an impossible task, but Sean Durkin has done the impossible with "The Iron Claw." While marketed as a biopic, "The Iron Claw" is more like a dramatic retelling of the Von Erich story — a legend retold blow by blow and presented as if it were modern folklore. And yet despite the creative liberties taken — including a glaring omission (more on that later) — "The Iron Claw" is the type of drama that makes a home in the darkest...

Writer-director Sean Durkin turns to a childhood obsession with a Texas wrestling dynasty and almost Shakespearean tragedy in The Iron Claw, a gritty, atmospheric, sometimes suffocatingly grim story of the Von Erich brothers, who ruled regional rings in the early ’80s with a then-inventive rock ‘n roll style of wrestling that won them rabid fans but at a cost.
Some families are snake-bit. The Kennedys are one that through the decades met success and unspeakable tragedy equally. The Wallendas, the great family circus trapeze family, also mixed glory with a high-wire act that didn’t always end well for some members. I wasn’t familiar with the Von Erich brothers, a close-knit family of Texas-born and -bred wrestlers managed by a take-no-prisoners father, but Durkin clearly was. He has carried around their story, particularly their premature deaths, in his head for years, finally now finding a way into telling their...

If any obsession straddles writer-director Sean Durkin’s three feature films to date, it’s family. The filmmaker’s cinematic gaze fixates with laser-like intensity on a structure that’s long stood as a key organizing unit of American society. While Durkin’s previous examinations tended toward the extremes, such as cultish devotion in Martha Marcy May Marlene and consumerist corrosion in The Nest, focusing on a more traditional nuclear family in The Iron Claw reveals a no less entropic force gnawing away at the structure.
Durkin’s tale of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty splits the difference between the psychological subjectivity of his debut feature and the chilly remove of its follow-up. In The Iron Claw, the filmmaker melds the reverence of a ringside fanatic with the rigor of someone who very clearly took the themes of Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull to heart. From tribulations and triumphs to tragedies,...

A true-life American tragedy that leverages the summery Texas idyll of “Dazed & Confused” into a larger than life — but heartbreakingly sincere — re-telling of “King Lear,” “The Iron Claw” is a wrestling epic inspired by a legend so sad that writer-director Sean Durkin felt like he had to sand it down in order for it to seem believable on screen. Inverting the fake it so real ethos of a sport that’s long been enjoyed as a form of steroidal theater (its operatic melodrama sustained by the exaggerated nature of its spectacle and vice-versa), Durkin’s film dials back the body count so that the scale of its loss doesn’t make it impossible for audiences to accept that it actually happened, or to exalt in the love that it ultimately left behind.

Sky and Starz have released a first-look teaser trailer for the spectacular and unapologetic limited event series, ‘Mary & George,’ starring Academy Award and BAFTA-winning actor Julianne Moore alongside Nicholas Galitzine.
is inspired by the outrageous true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England (Tony Curran) and become his all-powerful lover.
Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors.
And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher.

Jeremy Allen White expressed confusion to GQ magazine over the current trajectory Hollywood has laid out for its rising stars. It appears that whenever a young actor is hitting the pop culture zeitgeist, he or she is immediately snatched up by Marvel or DC and put in a superhero movie universe. It happened to Riz Ahmed, who went from “The Night Of” Emmy winner to “Venom” villain. White told the publication that when they first met it was Ahmed who asked him, “When are you going to do a Marvel thing?”
White, whose career has exploded over the last couple years thanks to his award-winning turn on FX’s “The Bear,” revealed to GQ that he did actually have a meeting for a major Hollywood tentpole, but it didn’t go smoothly.

A late-release awards contender can move through Oscar season like a cat. It crouches low, waiting patiently for the right moment to pounce.
With the deployment of a skillful campaign, yet-unscreened films waiting in the wings — notably “The Color Purple,” “The Iron Claw” and “Napoleon” — might execute the perfect strike, catching established front-runners like “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” by surprise.
Throughout the expanded best picture era (post-2009), second- and third-quarter release dates have been the sweet spot for eventual Academy winners. Memorable examples are 2009’s “The Hurt Locker” (May) and last year’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (April). As October draws to a close, few of the contenders initially screened on the fall festival circuit have been critical flops. That means upcoming prospects hope to break into a race already stacked with two dozen worthy candidates.

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon finale.
The mystery at the center of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon can be succinctly summed up as “why France?”
After 11 seasons of the flagship series taking place in the American Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest, why did the first episode of spinoff open with the titular character drifting ashore on the beaches of Marseille? The first season’s fifth and penultimate episode answers that question to a certain extent. Daryl encountered some trouble in the U.S., was imprisoned on a French research vessel, and then threw himself overboard to avoid an amped up walker, eventually washing up in southern France.
While that explains the literal narrative reasons for Daryl’s French journey, it doesn’t quite capture the thematic reasons. What can The Walking Dead accomplish with the major character of Daryl Dixon in France that it...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 1 finale.] Norman Reedus‘ Daryl Dixon was on a mission in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 1 finale, and it was the same mission he’s had all season long: get back home. What he didn’t expect was to feel at home somewhere else. Leaving home and finding you belong somewhere else was the emotional core of Season 1, so said showrunner David Zabel at Twd: Daryl Dixon panel at New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 12, where the finale was screened in full for the excited audience of Twd fans and press. That theme rang true in Daryl’s final moments of the finale, which on top of scoring the historic Mont Saint-Michel as its filming location for The Nest also filmed a Daryl-walker battle on the beaches of Normandy. The setting had deep emotional meaning for Daryl. As revealed to Isabelle (Clémence Poésy...

Let the wrestling mayhem begin: A24 has released the first trailer for The Iron Claw, the true story of the Von Erichs, a family of pro wrestlers that has ruled the ring for decades, despite so many tragedies that fans have often talked of a Von Erich Curse.

The new trailer – set, forebodingly, to the tune of Blue Öyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” – shows the brothers’ camaraderie in the face of wrestling opponents and their own bullying father Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany).
Also appearing in the film are Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Maura Tierney as Doris and Lily James as Kevin’s wife, Pam. The Iron Claw is written and directed by Sean Durkin...

There are a lot of curses out there: the curse of the Black Pearl, the mummy, the were-rabbit… we could go on. You’d be well advised to steer clear of them all. There are few sports stories as bizarre and tragic as tale of the Von Erich family, a family of professional wrestlers whose luck was so singularly awful that it popularized something called the “Von Erich Curse.” Was the curse real? You might find out if you watch “The Iron Claw,” the upcoming sports drama from A24 and filmmaker Sean Durkin, named after the wrestling move the family popularized. And you can watch the trailer above.
An extremely chiseled Zac Efron stars as Kevin, Jeremy Allen White (equally buff) as Kerry, Harris Dickinson as David and Holt McCallany as their domineering father Fritz. (Part of Fritz’s schtick early in his wrestling career was dressing as an evil Nazi character.) Maura Tierney and Lily James also star.

For months now, we've been seeing paparazzi photos of Zac Efron looking extremely beefy with a silly haircut, and hearing reports about "The Bear" star Jeremy Allen White's "gross" diet in preparation for the new A24 film, "The Iron Claw." For outsiders looking in, "The Iron Claw" looks like a wrestling drama, and many are thrilled to see the pair of actors step into the squared circle of muscle ballet. However, the average Joe's opinion of wrestling is rooted in the heyday of Hulkamania, the Attitude Era of the late '90s, or through crossover stars who have since become actors. Here's the thing: It's really cool that Allen and Efron are going to be in a wrestling movie, but if you're anticipating something like the extremely fun "Fighting With My Family" starring Florence Pugh or the deeply moving biopic "Cassandro" starring Gael García Bernal ... you're in for a hell of a rude awakening.

Foe’s potential is immense. The new sci-fi drama from director Garth Davis, who garnered acclaim after 2016’s Lion, stars beloved under-30 actors in Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan. It’s adapted from a book by Iain Reid (I’m Thinking of Ending Things). The two Irish stars play an American couple, Henrietta and Junior, living in the Midwest later this century, existing in a world ravaged by a climate crisis that’s caused an unending drought. An unknown man named Terrance (Aaron Pierre) visits their farm, claiming that Junior must go to space to help save the human species while Henrietta stays behind with a clone of her husband. Foe has a solid director, a great cast, and a good-enough premise. The movie, considered against its potential, borders on laughable and cements itself as inane.
The movie thrives when the mystery hasn’t been unraveled and Reid’s script remains amorphous.

Tina Howe, the celebrated playwright whose works included the oft-staged Painting Churches and Coastal Disturbances, died yesterday of natural causes after a short illness due to complications from a hip fracture sustained in a recent fall. The two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist was 85.
Her death was announced by her longtime agent Patrick Herold.
A New York City native, Howe attended Sarah Lawrence College, Teacher’s College at Columbia University and Chicago Teachers College and studied philosophy at Sorbonne University in Paris before her mainstream stage breakthrough in 1981 with the production of Painting Churches at Second Stage Off Broadway. Set in the Beacon Hill area of Boston, the play, about the relationship between an artist and her aging parents, was a major success, winning an Obie Award, moving to Broadway in 1983 and becoming a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
