Mamoudou Athie can practically taste the lobster rolls from the Carlton hotel. He smiles wistfully as he taps into that sense memory of his first trip to the Cannes Film Festival. In 2023, Athie voiced the lead role in Disney-Pixar’s “Elemental,” which closed the fest. And he’s returning this week as part of the first-rate ensemble of Yorgos Lanthimos’ offbeat movie “Kinds of Kindness.”
Discussion of the crustacean-filled dish might seem irrelevant, but it’s perhaps not incidental. Athie begins our conversation by revealing that his first encounter with Lanthimos’ unique sensibilities was 2015’s “The Lobster.” The Mauritanian American actor, who was studying at Yale School of Drama at the time, was captivated by the originality of the material and the conviction the filmmaker brought to his craft.

The 2007 John C. Reilly comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has become a cult hit in recent years, largely as a result of the skill with which it dissects and eviscerates the genre it satirizes.
The film so deftly laid bare the tropes and cliches of the rock star biopic that many predicted it would forever change the way filmmakers approached stories about dead celebs.
And for a while, it seemed like the trick had worked.
Leaving aside for a moment any discussion about the quality of these films, there's no denying that Elvis, Blonde, Maestro, Jackie, Priscilla, and Oppenheimer all offered new takes on a very familiar subgenre.
(That last one, admittedly, is a bit of an outlier, as we're not sure if a theoretical physicist -- even one who altered the course of world history -- can properly be called a celebrity.)

Oscar-nominated sound mixer Steve Morrow has recorded quite a few party scenes in his career, in movies such as “Don’t Worry Darling,” “The Prom” and “Babylon.”
When it came to Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Morrow had to figure out how to capture the sound in a prominent party scene that takes place at the Bernstein family apartment in the Dakota Building in New York. It’s a key moment that transitions the film from black and white to 1970s color, anchored by Carey Mulligan’s Felicia smoking a cigarette, staring out the window at Central Park while a bustling party surrounds her.
Morrow knew how the film would transition visually, but his team was tasked with capturing sound from both Felicia’s and Lenny’s (Cooper) circles. “We filmed it at the same time,” explains Morrow. “I’m listening to both parties happening and trying to understand who’s saying what and when.

One of Westwood’s historic movie theaters will soon have new ownership.
Filmmaker Jason Reitman is leading an unnamed group of investors in purchasing the art deco Fox Village Theater, located at 945 Broxton Ave. The news, first reported by The Ankler’s Peter Kiefer, was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Per the initial report, Reitman and crew are “weeks away” from taking over the property in a deal that is currently in escrow.
Last summer, reports surfaced that the landmarked Fox Village was up for grabs for a $12 million sum, listed by Newmark’s Capital Markets group, which promoted the theater as an “iconic property” and “one of the most identifiable, landmark properties in Los Angeles.” The listing also stated that the 24,099-square-foot building, which houses 1,375 seats inside the theater, had not previously been up for sale.

Fresh off the box office success of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed an overall producing deal with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, the team behind the paranormal reboot.
The movie has grossed $115.8 million globally since it opened two weeks ago and helped find a fresh way into a franchise that first launched in 1984. A previous attempt to revive the series in 2016, which found Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones donning proton packs, failed to turn a profit because it cost $144 million to produce. “Afterlife” was made more economically, carrying a $75 million budget.
“Jason is the thing you dream about: a world-class, signature storyteller, visionary filmmaker, and dream producing partner,” said Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group. “Jason and Gil as co-writing partners have a remarkable understanding of commercial quality cinema, and we are thrilled about the upcoming pipeline from these guys.”

It has begun. The steady trickle of films about Labradors who save Christmas, American girls marrying European princes, and parents learning that their kids are more important than their jobs, is with us. Netflix is responsible for a good proportion of the above, with several new festive titles arriving over the next few weeks.

Call me crazy, stubborn or reckless, but until today’s announcement that the Telluride Film Festival has been canceled, I’d optimistically kept my reservation, holding out hope that the elite fall gathering in Colorado might happen after all.
There’s not another festival like it. In addition to launching such best picture Oscar winners as “The King’s Speech,” “12 Years a Slave” and “Moonlight,” Telluride has introduced North American audiences to the likes of “Lady Bird,” “The Rider” and “Waves.” It’s the ideal place to see movies — like summer camp for cinephiles, who share screenings and conversations over a long weekend together — and this year, it represented the proverbial light at the end of a very dark tunnel.
Passes went on sale back in late February for the high-altitude sprocket opera, and within hours, they’d sold out. A few weeks later, everything had turned upside down as...

Hugh Jackman in ‘The Front Runner.’
Despite credits in 30 movies and multiple stage shows, Hugh Jackman was a bundle of nerves as he prepared to film the most crucial scenes in Sony Pictures’ The Front Runner.
The director Jason Reitman asked Jackman, who was playing Us Senator Gary Hart, whose presidential campaign was derailed after allegations of an extra-marital affair, if he was all right.
He said yes but Reitman looked sceptical, forcing the actor to make a first-ever confession: “I’m not 100 per cent. I’m nervous, man.”
The tightness in his chest soon vanished after the director admitted he feels nervous every day and assured him he would never let him go home until every scene was the best it could be.
Jackman related that story today in a webinar with Actors Centre Australia CEO Dean Carey and Aca chairman David Chiem.

A version of this story on Kaitlyn Dever first appeared in the Limited Series & Movies issue of TheWrap Emmy magazine.
When Kaitlyn Dever was a little girl, Hollywood seemed like a simple place. “When I first wanted to do acting, I thought you could just do it and be on the Disney Channel like Christie Carlson Romano and Raven-Simoné,” she said with a laugh from the guest house she occupies behind her parents’ home in Los Angeles. “Those women on the Disney Channel were my idols growing up. At first, I just wanted to make people laugh. I remember distinctly (that) the feeling of making my parents laugh was the best thing in the world.”
Of course there was something special in her parents’ laughter: Her dad, after all, had a stint as the voice of Barney, the Purple Dinosaur. But Dever’s ambitions moved beyond kids’ TV, she said,...

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was supposed to hit theaters next month, but Sony was forced to delay the film almost a year due to Covid-19. Fans were understandably upset, but the extended wait is allowing director Jason Reitman to not only fine-tune the movie, but also think about the future of the franchise.
While on a Zoom call with the original Ghostbusters cast, Reitman revealed that he’s already developing another sequel, saying:
“I can’t tell you anything, but we are working on another installment. We have a little bit more time, and look, as a director, I’ve never had this opportunity to actually take a pause and breathe and look at the movie again. [The extra time has been] extraordinarily valuable. I’ve been spending my days editing Ghostbusters, so that’s where I’ve been.”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows a single mom who moves her two kids to a small town to start over.

Jurassic World: Dominion is the title of the 2021-scheduled third film in the revived blockbuster Jurassic Park franchise, intended as the conclusion to a trilogy consisting of 2015’s Jurassic World and 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The sequel swan song will showcase a shaken status quo after Fallen Kingdom‘s plot twist, in which the cloned dinosaurs were unleashed upon civilization, altering the existential balance of mankind (and the rest of the animal kingdom).
Seemingly mirroring Disney’s revived Star Wars Sequel Trilogy films, the Jurassic Sequel Trilogy will close things out with the director who helped foster the relaunch, Colin Trevorrow. He will work off a script that he helped develop with Derek Connolly, co-written by Emily Carmichael.
Dominion will, poetically enough, be a franchise-encompassing reunion with current stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard set to be joined by returning Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum,...

The release of HBO’s acclaimed “Bad Education” draws near and the Hugh Jackman-led trailer for the film has finally arrived.
“Bad Education” dramatizes one of the largest education scandals in American history, with Frank Tassone (Jackman), a Long Island school superintendent, and district official Pam Gluckin (Allison Janney) accused of stealing hundreds of thousands from the district’s budget. Though their school district is on the up and up the scandal threatens to ruin everything the duo have built, spurring Jackman’s character to do everything in his power to maintain order and stop the story from becoming public. The film will be released on HBO April 25.

Bad Education is an upcoming movie that has headliner Hugh Jackman showcasing his range with yet another comedic and intriguingly uncharacteristic performance. However, said film won’t be seen at a theater near you – it’s heading to HBO!
The film, despite its tongue-in-cheek presentation, is actually a fact-based affair. Jackman stars as Frank Tassone, a school superintendent who, upon discovery of his malfeasance in 2002, plunged his Long Island district in a notorious embezzlement scandal.
Cory Finley directed the film, coming off his 2017 feature debut, the crime thriller, Thoroughbreds. He worked here off a screenplay by Mike Makowsky.

A new trailer has arrived for HBO’s Bad Education, further previewing Jackman’s depiction as Frank Tassone as a beloved and seemingly-driven school super who, by all visible accounts, has his district on an upward trajectory. However, in what’s now a classic scenario, a curious number-cruncher serendipitously...
