"This isn't art. It isn't even great trash. It's a con game, and we bear the claw marks." That's what critic Rita Kempley wrote for the Washington Post in a particularly scathing review of Roland Emmerich's 1998 movie, "Godzilla." It was the first attempt by Hollywood to bring the classic monster to life in America, and it was a spectacular failure. That's what Warner Bros., Legendary, and director Gareth Edwards were working against while crafting 2014's "Godzilla." Skepticism was built in. They had to prove that a film within this franchise made outside of Japan could work.
They did that and then some.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire releases on May 4, 2024.
The Lucasfilm dive into Dave Filoni‘s most cherished characters has frustrated some fans. Many loved Ahsoka and the relaunch of Clone Wars adjacent shows. However, others have grown weary of over-using these characters, specifically if they do not have prior knowledge. In many ways, Tales of Empire exists because of the hardcore fans who love Clone Wars and Rebels-era characters. However, the expanding universe has paid dividends already, with greenlit shows and movies based on characters Filoni created from scratch, or co-created.
Yet the question about including more Filoni characters has become a hot-button issue in the fandom. Unlike Tales of the Jedi, this series focuses on more obscure figures within the larger Star Wars canon. Without having seen Ahsoka or deep into Clone Wars, you might never have seen these figures. The results have been inconsistent – providing a backstory...

Way back in 2002, the excitement for Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones diminished somewhat. Late Night with Conan O’Brien sent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to mock the fans lined up for the premiere, resulting in a segment in which comedian/puppeteer Robert Smigel launched nerd jokes at the assembly.
Most of the jokes were pretty obvious, including the last bit, in which a man cosplaying as Mr. Spock gained the knack for cursing and walked up and down the line with his middle finger extended. But while the perceived Star Wars vs. Star Trek rivalry has become an old toxic cliché at this point, the fact is that the two franchises don’t actually overlap very much in terms of their core missions. Trek favors optimistic philosophical inquiry and Wars emphasizes fantasy and adventure.

Feardemic and Under the Bed Games will be scratching that folk horror itch for gamers later this month. They’ve announced that their adventure title Tales From Candleforth will be releasing on April 30 for PC via Steam, Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch.
Tales From Candleforth is a hand-drawn point & click adventure game that revolves around a collection of fairy tales that were written on top of a forbidden book many years ago to hide its content. Years later, the dark text is bleeding out and onto the pages of the tales, mixing with them and twisting the stories.
One story in particular centres around Sarah, a 16 year old girl that’s left alone to run the family apothecary. Sarah’s grandmother went missing a while ago, but one day, she finds clues that she might still be alive. As Sarah discovers new powers that only the women in her family can inherit,...

Lucasfilm has revealed the first teaser trailer for "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire." Though not exactly a season 2, per se, this serves as a follow-up to 2022's acclaimed "Tales of the Jedi." That show was a series of animated shorts that focused on two interwoven tales of Jedi at crucial times in their development, namely Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku before he fell to the dark side. Similarly, this new series will be focusing on two different figures within the Empire: Morgan Elsbeth and former Jedi Barriss Offee. Check it out for yourself above.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Criterion Collection has compiled and released another collection of romantic classics. I already owned the beautifully packaged set of Richard Linklater’s Before Trilogy, and Rohmer’s quartet of films exploring the ups and downs of friendship and romance makes for a perfect companion piece. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Paw Patrol sequels are both heading our way in 2026, courtesy of Paramount.
Paramount Pictures, which just announced it’s focusing on mid-budget movies, has set release dates for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 and Paw Patrol 3.
A sequel to Jeff Rowe’s excellent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was in the works before the film was even released, but Paramount has now given the animated turtle sequel a release date.
We can expect to see Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo back on the big screen on 9th October 2026, as reported by The Wrap. Rowe is returning to helm the sequel.
A new animated series is also premiering this year on Paramount+ with the teenage turtles taking centre stage. Titled Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the series will see the film’s voice cast reprise their roles this summer, with...

If there is one unwritten rule of horror movies, it's that successful ones will get sequels. When they cease to be successful, there is a more than decent chance the franchise in question will be rebooted. This is the circle of life with genre movies in Hollywood. For "Friday the 13th" and its masked killer Jason Voorhees, the franchise had remained resilient for nearly three decades without ever being rebooted. But when that reboot came in 2009, it offered a new generation of horror fans a way to become acquainted with Mr. Voorhees.

Callum Turner and Alia Shawkat have joined the cast of the Luca Guadagnino-produced feature ‘Atropia.’
Based on Hailey Gates’ 2019 short ‘Shako Mako’ which she originally produced for fashion brand Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales series, the feature follows the story of an aspiring actress who is working on a U.S. military training base simulating an Iraqi war zone. (“Atropia” is the name of a fake country reportedly invented by the American military for interactive training exercises).
The short’s synopsis reads “Farah, a bread seller, walks the streets of a Middle Eastern town, while an American military vehicle, surrounded by soldiers, slowly passes by, A moment’s silence. Then, a devastating explosion. Civilians are bloodied and wounded. The horrors of war. ‘Farah’ looks around aghast and wailing.”

Plot: Four interconnected tales follow a teenager in love (Jack Champion), two female rappers trying to make it (Normani and Dominique Thorne), a world-weary debt mob enforcer (Pedro Pascal ) and a basketball legend (Jay Ellis) looking for vengeance in 1987 Oakland.
Review: Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson) make a triumphant return to Sundance with one of the festival’s most energetic offerings in years. Mixing a Tarantino-style crime tale with high-octane action, Boden and Fleck use the bag of tricks they earned working for the MCU (Captain Marvel) to deliver an unexpected smash. Freaky Tales is the kind of movie Sundance would have shown in its nineties heyday, with it likely the only film playing this year that ends in a kung-fu-heavy bloodbath. I loved every second of it.

All film noirs start with a bad decision. Love Lies Bleeding, Rose Glass’s follow-up to her cult horror movie Saint Maud and the most case-hardened Southwestern pulp this side of Jim Thompson, kicks off with a doozy. Lou (Kristen Stewart) cleans toilets and works the desk at a gym in New Mexico. Jackie (Katy O’Brian), a would-be competitive bodybuilder, has just breezed into town and strolls in for a workout. Soon, these two will spend long nights ravaging each other, dumping corpses, dodging bullets, and running for their lives.

Kevin James is not exactly a name that comes to mind when one thinks of the phrase "movie star." People of a certain age probably picture the lovable everyman Doug Heffernan from his long-running sitcom "The King of Queens," but a great many others will probably think of two words: Paul Blart. Be it solely for the memes or because you're one of the many moviegoers who genuinely enjoys the film, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" was a bonafide hit that started a franchise and, though it may not be how we generally think of him, asserted James as a butts-in-seats movie star.

‘Freaky Tales’ Sundance Review – Energetic Genre Mixtape Starring Pedro Pascal Revels in ‘80s Excess
Writer/Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck interconnect four energetic, frequently bloody stories in infectious anthology Freaky Tales. The filmmakers set Freaky Tales in 1987 Oakland, capturing the subculture of the Bay Area amidst the peak of ‘80s excess. It yields an anything-goes anarchic spirit that, when combined with an impressive cast game for this type of madness, plays like a stylish and entertaining genre mixtape.
Borrowing a page from Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, Freaky Tales segments its stories into four chapters, but they overlap in ways that don’t immediately reveal themselves as characters and timelines blur across the entire anthology. That careful structure makes up a large part of the fun, and Boden and Fleck bide their time immersing viewers in an eclectic world of punks versus Nazis, crooked cops, a crime enforcer’s attempt at retirement, and one Warrior all-star player who’s harnessed the mysterious green...

Taking a one-for-us victory lap after one-for-them studio smash “Captain Marvel,” indie duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden blow a big, self-indulgent kiss to the late-’80s East Bay with nostalgia-fueled “Freaky Tales.” Berkeley-born Fleck was all of 10 years old in early 1987, when this overstuffed anthology film is set, which explains the wide-eyed way he romanticizes the defining subcultures of the time.
In four distinct but intertwining chapters — populated mostly with fresh faces, plus grizzled-but-gorgeous Pedro Pascal — “Freaky Tales” melds wildly different sectors of the city: There’s the rowdy-yet-respectful Gilman Street punk crowd; the revolutionary Oakland hip-hop scene; the Warriors’ historic victory over the Lakers, in which local basketball legend Eric “Sleepy” Floyd scored a record-setting 29 points in the fourth quarter; and a disturbing spike in neo-Nazi-linked hate crimes, which strangely serves to tie everything else together.

On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Wait for Santa to Get a Load of These Nuts
There’s no doubt in my mind that Santa is a midnight movie fan.
A famed night owl with a criminal streak, ol’ Kris Kringle seems like just the sort of cinephile who would fit in with the IndieWire After Dark crowd. Sure, he would probably be more inclined towards the Christmas projects that feed his ego than a cheap “Sausage Party” predecessor with some of the most unpleasant computer-animated cheese ever melted into imagination. But...

Until "The Little Mermaid" arrived in 1989 and ushered in another golden age for Disney animation, the '80s were not an otherwise great period for the storied studio. The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival drifted to a conclusion in midweek, with project awards presented on Wednesday, followed by Thursday’s festival closing events. These involved a screening of portmanteau film “Tales of Taipei” followed by a sit-down dinner-cum-ceremony with a breezy pair of speeches and no prizes.
The film fortnight then sprang to life again on Saturday evening when the 60th edition of the Golden Horse Film Awards represented a new climax. The winners were announced at a ceremony at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
For decades the Golden Horse awards had been the most prestigious prize ceremony in the Chinese-language firmament. That high profile has been harder to maintain over the last couple of years, given that the mainland Chinese industry is under government instruction to boycott the event, following a pro-independence speech given by an award winner at the 2018 ceremony.
Parts of the Hong Kong industry have stayed away too.

Fantastico Studio has dropped another progress update for their Cannibal Tales visual novel, which is aiming to have a beta release this Halloween. In addition to adding three new scenes to the beta, the update delves into the characters that are part of Ruggero Deodato-scripted game.

Fantastico also dropped a few details regarding the characters that will be part of this first entry, “The Interview”, which is being planned for release this Winter:

Matteo Garrone’s talent for weaving stories out of the fabric of real events––especially those involving desperate or violent people––gets another airing in Io Capitano, an engrossing, visceral portrait of one young man’s brutal journey from Senegal to the coast of Italy. The director won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2008 for Gomorrah, his defining, excoriating portrait of the Camorra crime syndicate, and he performed the trick again ten years later in Dogman, inspired by a gruesome gangland murder in Rome. He’s also had success in comedies (Reality) and fantasy (Tale of Tales), but his new film is an epic embracing the defining issue of Italian politics right now––the flow of refugees crossing the Mediterranean heading for Europe––making a potentially abstract, no-less-urgent topic tactile and approachable.

Big hits to land included Heartstopper and The Crown Season 5. Multiple records were broken in a year in which the UK TV industry was virtually at full employment, but, during the briefing, most questions to Pact CEO John McVay focused on the here and now, as things feel very different today for many producers. Filipino filmmaker Jun Robles Lana is making his second appearance at Toronto International Film Festival with Your Mother’s Son, which is receiving its world premiere in the Centrepiece section.
Co-scripted by Lana and Elmer Gatchalian, the film tells the story of a hard-working mother and her delinquent son whose relationship is challenged when she invites one of her students to move into their home, so he can escape his violent father. Initially, it seems the son is suffering from a severe case of Oedipus complex, but as the film progresses, a more shocking tale of abuse of power and sexual dynamics begins to unfold.
Sue Prado (Barber’s Tales) plays the mother, with Kokoy de Santos (Gameboys) playing the son, and Elora Españo and Miggy Jimenez rounding out the cast. Lana, Perci Intalan and Ferdinand Lapuz produced the film through The IdeaFirst Company, Octobertrain Films, Quantum Films and Cineko Productions.

For the most part on this show, we are looking at certified classics to see if they still hold up. For the most part, anyway. Looking at you C.H.U.D. We try to look at everything from the cinematography and direction to the acting and special effects. Sometimes though the story ends up being the most important aspect of the movie. Every now and then a movie needs a reappraisal even when it wasn’t a hit at the time or seen as a classic. Look at what happened to The Thing. SAG-AFTRA Strike Looms
Clock’s ticking: Time is running out for SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP to strike a new deal and avoid an actors strike before the current contract runs out today, though our U.S. colleagues Dominic Patten and Anthony D’Alessandro revealed on Wednesday talks may extend to next week or even later. Fingers remain crossed at these signs of progress. Negotiations are at a critical stage, with more than 1,000 actors, including Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, signing a letter stating they are “prepared to strike.” In Europe, producers, studios, networks and actors have been peering pensively across the pond. Unions in English-speaking countries appear less prepared to act in solidarity with their U.S.

Early press for action-comedy series Fubar has made much of the coup of Netflix bagging Schwarzenegger for television. At last! The Governator is “set to make his TV series debut” says The Hollywood Reporter. This marks the action icon’s “first ever television series”, says Collider. Science has finally figured out how to make TV screens wide enough to accommodate the Hollywood star’s mighty girth, and now we’ve got him. Never mind that Arnie’s been muscling around on television since 1974.
