Wildling Pictures has launched a new TV division focusing high-end drama, kids, YA and family content.
The Toronto-based production company, whose feature film output includes Iris Apatow starrer “Young Wether” and David Bowie biopic “Stardust,” have unveiled their first scripted TV slate as part of the expansion.
Highlights include screen adaptations of novels “A Death at The Party” by Amy Stuart and “Clara Voyant” by Rachelle Delaney.
In “A Death at The Party” protagonist Nadine is in the middle of throwing a garden party when she finds herself face to face with a dead body in the basement. She soon embarks on a hunt for the truth. Screenwriter Joanne Sarazen (“Tammy’s Always Dying”) will adapt the novel into a series.
Delaney’s “Clara Voyant” is a coming-of-age about wannabe journalist and astrologer Clara, who is crushed when her student newspaper assigns her the horoscopes beat… until she realizes that she is actually clairvoyant.

Any home viewing for “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount) could be as late as after Labor Day, but it’s already #6 at iTunes thanks to PVOD pre-buys. And at #5 on iTunes is the week’s top new PVOD release, “Last Seen Alive” (Vertical/19.99), which also had a single theatrical date this week. Another take on the “Taken” trope, Gerard Butler stars as a husband trying to find his estranged wife while battling local criminals.
Butler has been a theatrical draw, but what’s of note is unlike many VOD-centric action originals released by Vertical and others, this one found an elevated response at a PVOD price and with minimal marketing. It’s also #3 at Vudu, and it’s another example of the often-eccentric universe that creates the home-viewing charts.
This week also saw the reduced-price “The Lost City” (Paramount/5.99) at #1 on both Google Play and iTunes while also streaming at Paramount +. On the revenue-driven Vudu,...

Paramount is having a great week.
Not only is “Top Gun: Maverick” projected to have the best Memorial Day weekend gross in perhaps 25 years (adjusting for inflation) with an estimated 156 million U.S./Canada gross through Monday, with nearly 300 million worldwide — they also dominate this week’s VOD charts, including placing #1 at Netflix.
Three Paramount films — “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” (19.99), “The Lost City” (5.99), and “Top Gun” all placed #1 on at least one site. Among the three VOD charts below, they took six of the nine #1, 2, and 3 slots.
Not bad when all of these films also are streaming (on Paramount + for subscribers). It’s bonus revenue for the studio, which has flourished in theaters as well this year. Of the seven releases to gross 100 million of more, they have had three, more than any of their competitors.
“Hedgehog,” which has had a surprising 185 million domestic gross, added home platforms 47 days after its theatrical start.

While we haven’t had a David Cronenberg feature since 2014, over that time, the filmmaker has been flexing his acting muscles in several roles, with two just in the last year alone, “Disappearance at Clifton Hill” and “Falling,” respectively. And it appears his 2020 acting journey isn’t over yet, as fans of “Star Trek: Discovery” shockingly discovered in an ad for a future episode.

Neo-noir is a difficult genre to tackle for many filmmakers. Although, when the job is done well, these stylistic thrillers can be immensely interesting and fun to watch. Director Albert Shin hopes audiences feel that way about his new film, “Disappearance at Clifton Hill.”
With ‘Clifton Hill’ arriving in theaters today, we’re happy to share an exclusive clip from the film with our readers. And though the plot of the film is probably going to be enough to interest folks into checking out the thriller, perhaps you’ll be even more excited to know that the film features a rare acting role for filmmaker David Cronenberg.

David Cronenberg hasn’t directed a movie since 2014’s “Maps to the Stars,” a satire in which the Canadian filmmaker set Hollywood on fire. And while the director hasn’t officially returned from movie-making, he’s in no rush to jump behind the camera again, either. Still, a new interview with The Guardian, timed to Cronenberg’s appearance in front of the camera on the Canadian thriller “Disappearance at Clifton Hill,” reveals that Cronenberg has a few projects in the mix.
That includes an adaptation of his 2014 novel “Consumed,” which back in October was rumored to be set up at Netflix. The streamer, though, according to Cronenberg, passed on scripts for two episodes on another series he proposed, and “Consumed” remains without a home for now. (Netflix has yet to respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on these projects.)
Cronenberg told The Guardian that he’s meanwhile tinkering with a “very personal” screenplay.

Albert Shin’s Disappearance At Clifton Hill is a curious Canadian case of kidnapping, repressed memories, and the maddening effects of Niagra Falls. IFC Midnight nabbed distribution rights after positive reactions came out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, praising the film’s nu-noir aesthetic. I’ve yet to watch it myself, but an earlier trailer paints […]

While the iconic imagery of Niagara Falls has been featured in countless films over the years (with “Superman II” and “Canadian Bacon” perhaps being the most notable examples), the landmark’s neighboring communities have rarely been the focus of any cinematic endeavors. On the Canadian side of the border, the tourist promenade Clifton Hill has always been known as a hotbed for consumerist entertainment and attractions. And although this is by no means a statement of consensus, some would even describe the street as a miniaturized watered-down version of Las Vegas.

Tagline: "The Truth Can be Deceiving." Disappearance at Clifton Hill is an upcoming thriller, from director Albert Shin (In Her Place). Shin's latest is a bit of a mystery thriller, involving a woman returning to her home town. Back in Niagara Falls, Abby must confront something from her childhood, an abduction of a young boy. IFC Midnight acquired this film, for distribution, late in 2019. Starring Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game), Hannah Gross (Joker) and a rare appearance by Canadian director David Cronenberg, this film will show in the U.S. and Canada this February 28th. This film viewer has been interested in film taglines, of late. The tagline for Disappearance at Clifton Hill is a bit of a paradox: "the Truth Can be Deceiving." If truth is deceptive, then this tagline could not be trusted. Lies are deceiving and cannot be trusted. The truth is sometimes all that can be relied on in the world,...

The notion of Niagara Falls as more than a tourist trap — as a place where people live and labor into the off-season, when the water is “turned down” and diverted to a hydroelectric plant — is the most resonant aspect of “Clifton Hill,” a Canadian noir that owes more than a little to the municipal conspiracies of “Chinatown.” When the theme restaurants and glow-in-the-dark putt-putt courses are emptied out or closed down altogether, the remaining residents are left with the dark secrets and shadow histories that course through the town — and sometimes sit at the bottom of the gorge. Director Albert Shin confronts just such a mystery when a Niagara Falls exile returns to reexamine her past, but he’s more skilled at suggesting foul play than laying out all the convoluted details.
