“Let’s not make ’em laugh” seems to be the new mantra for rewarding comedies at the Emmys.
Clear-cut, humor-filled chuckle fests once dominated the Emmys for comedy series, with classics such as “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Seinfeld” amusing generations of fans and finding new life via reruns and streaming services.
However, at the dawn of the streaming era, the multi-pronged so-called dramedy began creeping up in the awards circle with titles such as Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” — which famously changed from comedy to drama — and Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” As of late, the category has taken a more serious turn.
In recent years, the nominees and winners for comedy series have reflected a broader, more inclusive interpretation of comedy. Shows like Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag,” along with HBO’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” have garnered critical...

Law & Order very nearly became the longest-running crime drama on television. If it hadn't been for a 10-year hiatus, it would have reached its 24th season a long time ago.
Thanks to that break, sister show Law & Order: Svu has pulled ahead by two seasons.
Still, Law & Order is one of NBC's most iconic shows, from its "dun dun" chime between scenes to its filming on location in New York City. It's high time for a cast and character guide to help you keep track of who you can expect to see (and not see!) during Law & Order Season 24.
Two Characters Are Not Coming Back
Many viewers were shocked when Jack McCoy (Sam Waterson) left Law & Order after over 400 episodes.
Waterson had been with the series since Season 4 and was probably more closely identified with it than any other character.

Rachel Brosnahan and Boyd Holbrook have something in common. Yes, they’re both actors, but they’re also both incredibly underrated. Sure, Brosnahan has received all sorts of acclaim for her role in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” but she’s just damn good in almost anything she works in. And Holbrook elevates every role. That’s why the reason a re-release of “Boomtown” caught our eye. A film from 2017 is getting a re-release, and a new trailer.

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

“Monk” is the epitome of the classic blue-sky show. Its mysteries are gripping, but the show’s characters are inviting — always giving viewers a reason to laugh. That’s still the case with Peacock’s reunion movie “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” And yet, there’s something surprisingly dark about the state of obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk when we catch up with him, post-pandemic.
“At this point we find Monk is really in a in a dark, dark place,” star Tony Shalhoub tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “He’s in a deep hole. Amazon is heading to Alabama.
The streamer is developing a television adaptation of Joshilyn Jackson’s novel, Gods in Alabama.
The book, first published in 2015, revolves around a young lawyer who promised God that she’d never return home to Alabama but is forced to go back to the South to defend a high school classmate accused of a murder she knows something about. In returning home, she’ll confront a simmering stew of family conflict, a hometown that hates her for defending the alleged killer of a local hero and all of the ghosts of her past.
Amazon describes the potential series, which is in development at the streamer, as a “soapy, legal thriller that is steeped in deep Southern charm.”
Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard, the writing duo whose credits include CBS’ True Lies and Bull, created the series and will serve as showrunners and exec producers.

It’s Superman!
On Monday, “Superman” writer-director James Gunn released the first look at star David Corenswet as Superman in an Instagram post.
The photo depicts the Man of Steel sitting in what appears to be a luxury highrise condo in his iconic blue, red, and yellow costume. He’s pulling on his boots, presumably to deal with the pink-and-blue comet-like burst that’s visible in the sky out the window. He may be a nearly immortal superhero from the planet Krypton, but he puts his boots on one at a time like everyone else.

The new Superman suit has officially debuted. As filming on James Gunn’s “Superman” (formerly “Superman: Legacy”) continues, the writer-director shared to his Threads account a first look at star David Corenswet in costume as the Man of Steel. The first thing fans might notice is the suit is quite dirty and weathered, which suggests Superman will be doing plenty of down and dirty fighting in the movie.
Gunn added on Threads that the first look photo “was taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera.”
Corenswet is getting the big break of a lifetime as the star of “Superman,” which marks his first time leading a major Hollywood tentpole film. The 30-year-old actor is best known for his supporting roles in two Ryan Murphy-created Netflix series, “The Politician” and “Hollywood.” His most notable film role prior to “Superman” was probably “Pearl,” the Ti West-directed horror movie starring Mia Goth.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20) is the only zodiac sign that combines so many different traits that it seems absolutely impossible for one person to represent them all. But somehow we really do! And believe me when I say it, because I am a Taurus.
We are loyal, stubborn, sensual, extremely lazy or the most hardworking people out there. We can work without weekends for months but still be the ones who will somehow put their comfort before all. We love hedonistic lifestyle: literally, there are only few things that I enjoy more than going out for some fancy food.
Our preferences are all over the place, and that includes the TV shows we like. So here's a list of series every Taurus will find extremely bingeable.

As you prep your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Actress, make sure to check out our photo gallery that catalogs the likeliest contenders. Including newly promoted 2023 supporting champ Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), three past winners are presently leading the pack, practically ensuring one of the most exciting acting races of the year.
Edebiri’s expected challengers include this category’s reigning victor, Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), and 2021-2022 winner Jean Smart (“Hacks”). Brunson already lost to Smart two years ago but was honored that night for writing her show’s pilot episode.
None of the four actresses Brunson beat last year are in the running this time. Both Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) and Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) starred on series that concluded during the last eligibility period, while Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”) and Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) won’t continue in their roles soon enough to qualify.

In a matter of hours, it appears that the NBA has essentially locked up 2/3 of its domestic broadcast partners — ESPN and Prime Video — for the next decade.
Don’t look now, hoops fans, but the basketball drama is not solely contained to the hardwood, as the NBA’s broadcast rights negotiations are getting increasingly exciting. On Friday afternoon, it was reported that the NBA had essentially agreed to a deal with ESPN for the league’s top-tier broadcast rights, and then, just a few hours later, The Athletic reported that the Association has a framework for a deal with Prime Video. If that framework eventually becomes a signed contract, this would mark the first time that the basketball league has moved nationally available games to a streaming platform.
Key Details: Amazon’s deal will be for a substantial number of games and could include conference championship series games as well.

‘Challengers’ has a brand-new release date, and is getting ready to bow in cinemas across the United States.
Zendaya is ready to serve up some love, and a few nasty tennis shots as well in her newest movie “Challengers.” The film has seen its release date bounce around and was due to premiere in theaters in September 2023 before seeing the date shift because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes to Friday, April 26, 2024.
Key Facts: “Challengers” has built a 90% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. MGM+ could get the film first, but it’s more likely to make its streaming debut on Prime Video. Fans should expect a wait of at least 100 days before seeing “Challengers” on Prime Video.

Amazon has leveraged the power of Nielsen ratings for “Thursday Night Football,” and Netflix could do likewise going forward.
After making its first major sports-adjacent deal in its history, there’s officially room to speculate on what sports Netflix could pursue next. Netflix signed a 10-year, $5 billion deal to stream “WWE Raw” starting in 2025 in late January, and industry talking-heads are already wondering what other sports Netflix could go after. But with Netflix’s recent decision to no longer report its subscriber totals to the public, will it still be able to convince sports leagues it wants to partner with that it’s a good potential broadcaster for their games?
Netflix has nearly 270 million customers but will stop reporting its totals publicly in Q1 2025. Company co-ceo Ted Sarandos said Netflix isn’t anti-sports, but pro-growth. Prime Video uses Nielsen ratings to quantify its sports successes, and Netflix could do likewise in the future.

One of the not-so-hidden secrets of late night is that sometimes portions of an episode will be taped days or even weeks ahead of time for insertion into a later episode.
Throw a four-month writers strike into the mix, and some of those pre-taped segments are going to fall by the wayside. Apparently that’s what happened with an interview Stephen Colbert taped last Spring with actor Reid Scott, as the two discussed Thursday night on The Late Show.
“Almost exactly a year ago, you came on to talk about the final season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel,” Colbert recalled as he sat down with Scott. “[But] right after I interviewed you for a tape that was supposed to air later in May, the writers strike happened.”

Glen Powell and Richard Linklater may be long-time collaborators and friends — and now, with the imminent release of their “Hit Man,” credited co-writers — but these two can still surprise each other.
Case in point: for the fact-based and very fun “Hit Man,” Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a seemingly regular dude who ends up moonlighting for the New Orleans Police Department as a fake assassin, tasked with snagging people who are attempting to employ a hitman to off certain people in their lives. The film, based on a Texas Monthly story, follows Gary as he tries on all sorts of personas — redneck hitman, Russian hitman, the list goes on and on — while also romancing a potential client (Adria Arjona) under the guise of smooth-talking hitman Ron. But all those other personas? Powell-original creations!

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which will not air in time to qualify for consideration.
