Icelandic film production company Sagafilm and Sweden’s LittleBig Productions are developing a historical series about 17th-century Icelanders abducted by Barbary corsairs and sold into slavery in North Africa.
Tentatively titled “Salé” — a city on the North African coast that was also a haven for pirates — the series is inspired by true events. It begins in the summer of 1627, when several hundred people in settlements along Iceland’s coast are captured by Barbary privateers under the command of the Dutch pirate Jan Janszoon, more commonly known as Admiral Murat Reis. Among his prisoners are Gunnur, the wife of a young fisherman, and her 12-year-old daughter Gríma. When they are brought to the North African slave markets, mother and daughter are separated, sold to different masters and forced to develop different strategies in order to survive.

Zack Snyder’s imminently-arriving “Snyder Cut” of 2017’s Justice League may be the dominant topic about the director, but his hiatus-breaking comeback with Netflix film Army of the Dead also draws near. Interestingly, while there’s still no release date for said film, it appears that its streaming giant platform is already planning to expand the zombie-battling franchise with a prequel movie and anime series. Yes, folks, an “ArmyoftheDeadverse” is nigh at Netflix.
Netflix has announced its expansion plans for, as the company puts it, a “Universe” of Snyder’s Army of the Dead, which, itself, is a sequel to his 2004 breakthrough, Dawn of the Dead. While Snyder—who directed and co-wrote the upcoming film—will certainly remain the creative fulcrum for the follow-up offerings, some interesting choices were made to handle the day-to-day duties. The prequel movie and anime series will be written by Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the...

Sales agent Beta Cinema is launching its Cannes Market slate, which is headlined by psychological thriller “Corvidae,” with a playful and novel approach. The company has produced an entertainment show, in the style of a late-night chatshow, featuring its sales team pitching its films and presenting exclusive clips from them. Variety has been given an exclusive sneak peek at the show before it goes live on Friday.
Beta Cinema CEO Dirk Schürhoff is the charismatic host of chatshow “The Beta Cinema Show,” filmed at the company’s offices in Oberhaching, near Munich, while Thorsten Ritter, exec VP acquisitions, sales and marketing, leads the house band on electric guitar. Its sales executives beam in their reports from around the world, while the kangaroo from the hit film “The Kangaroo Chronicles” assists. The tone is fun and tongue-in-cheek, but it’s a serious attempt to add a bit of showbiz pizzazz to the virtual market format.

The Svod service has ordered The Last Word, a six-part series from Pantaleon Films, which produces Amazon’s You Are Wanted. It will be showrun by Aron Lehmann and Carlos V. Irmscher, who wrote the series with Nora Valo and Carolina Zimmermann based on an idea from Thorsten Merten.

Literary adaptions and beloved franchises abound in the incoming May arrivals to Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix. Amazon alone has acquired the screen revivals of multiple classic novels, including renditions of Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” and Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express.”
Also coming to Amazon and Hulu this May is the entire “Rocky” franchise, while Hulu has clinched all six “A Nightmare on Elm Street” movies. Netflix, meanwhile, will add scattered saga installments, including the original “Shrek,” “Scream 2,” and “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.”
A mix of original and acquired TV shows are also set to hit the streaming services next month. The new Showtime series “Patrick Melrose,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will stream on Hulu, while Amazon Prime will debut its original animated series “Rocky & Bullwinkle.” Also incoming are past seasons of shows like “Scandal,” “Orphan Black,” and “Running Wild With Bear Grylls.

Amazon’s Prime membership program has now topped 100 million paying members worldwide, CEO Jeff Bezos said in his annual letter to shareholders.
It’s the first time Amazon has revealed a specific number for Prime. But Bezos stayed opaque on numbers for its video and music businesses. He wrote in the April 18 letter that “Prime Video continues to drive Prime member adoption and retention.” Amazon Music “continues to grow fast and now has tens of millions of paid customers,” he said. Amazon Music Unlimited, the on-demand, ad-free offering, expanded to more than 30 new countries in 2017, and membership has more than doubled over the past six months, according to Bezos.
Overall in 2017, Amazon shipped more than 5 billion items via Prime, its program that offers unlimited free two-day shipping on over 100 million different items in the U.S. along with other perks (including access to the original and licensed TV shows and...

Amazon executive Roy Price talks London, India and Japan expansion.
When reports broke in 2015 that Amazon Studios had paid between $160m to $250m to sign up former Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May for 36 episodes of its new rival motoring show Grand Tour, there was incredulity in the UK press and parts of the film and TV industry.
Speaking at Miptv in a keynote media mastermind session on Monday, less than five months after the global launch of Grand Tour at the end of 2016, the group’s vice president Roy Price told the audience the investment had paid off, although he would not divulge the exact value of the deal.
“Grand Tour is an expensive show but it’s well worth it. It’s actually efficient and good economics. In the video on demand business the thing that is going to make most difference is the show that people are talking about and are...
