When Oscar-winning producer Jonathan Sanger was first pitched “Cabrini,” the story of the first American saint, he wasn’t quite sure he was right for the project.
“I said, ‘I think it’s a great idea. I think you should make the movie. I don’t really think I’m the right guy to produce this,’” Sanger recalls of his early conversation with executive producer J. Eustace Wolfington. “I tend to like to make stories about real people, that most people who watch these stories can relate to. And I don’t know how to relate to a saint.”
Wolfington wouldn’t take no for an answer, telling Sanger he was missing the point: Francesca Cabrini may have become a saint, but her powerful story of overcoming adversity as both a woman and an Italian immigrant takes place far before her posthumous canonization in 1946.

Portal A has revealed nine projects it is developing as part of its $500,000 investment in experimental content. The digital-savvy production company is backing an eclectic mix of digital programs through the Moonshots program it introduced this past February.
Several of the projects in the Portal A slate will utilize emerging technologies like AI and short-form video. Nightmare Fuel, for example, is a TikTok series that will combine horror stories with AI-generated audio and visuals.
By embracing experimentation, Portal A’s Moonshots unit is taking the company “back to its innovative roots,” according to Portal A Director of Original Projects Jacob Motz. As the leader of the Moonshots program, Motz is looking to recapture the core values of a company that once produced global video game contests, upside-down cooking tutorials and shot-for-shot remakes of Abba music videos. Lupita Nyong’o and others took to social media on Monday to honor the late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman on the third anniversary of his death.

Tom Shadyac's 1997 comedy film "Liar Liar" had a light supernatural concept: Fletcher Reed, a typical Hollywood Workholic Dad constantly lies to his family and clients in order to succeed in life. As a lawyer, lying is handy. As a father, however, lying gets him in trouble with his five-year-old son, Max (Justin Cooper). As such, the child makes a birthday wish, longing that his dad cannot lie for just one day. The wish comes true.
What follows is a comedic showcase for star Jim Carrey to put his talents for physical comedy on display. The actor hilariously mugs and thrashes about in agony as Fletcher's newfound truthfulness gets him in various amounts of trouble. In one case, he cannot lie to exonerate a dishonest client. In another, he says openly lascivious things to a woman on the elevator. He gets slapped in the face and even arrested for his comments.

New York is poised to dramatically increase its film tax incentive from $420 million a year to $700 million, as it looks to stave off competition from New Jersey and Georgia.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced an agreement Thursday night on a $229 billion budget, after weeks of negotiations with state lawmakers.
Among many other provisions, the budget will increase the size of the film tax credit program, as well as raise the credit percentage from 25% to 30%, bringing it in line with rival states. The program will also be extended to 2034, according to a source familiar with the conceptual agreement.
The agreement with lawmakers will allow productions to receive a tax credit on above-the-line costs — salaries for actors, directors, writers and producers. The state previously offered credit only for below-the-line costs. The above-the-line costs will be capped, though it is not yet certain at what level.

“Duuuuude,” he tells her. As she starts to apologize, he cuts her off and begins reading a rolled-up piece of paper. “Me first. My name is Barney Stinson, and I am a recovering serial womanizer. We are likely speaking today because you are a woman I once concocted an elaborate scheme to have sex with. I fully understand why you’ve exacted revenge on me.”
He went on to apologize to her if he ever pretended...

Actor-turned-filmmaker Alex Winter (Showbiz Kids) has set the murder mystery The Adults, starring Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), Josh Gad (Avenue 5) and Anthony Carrigan (Barry), as his next project behind the camera, with plans to also act in the pic.
The film penned by novelist Michael M.B. Galvin — who has previously adapted his own works Fat Kid Rules the World and Freak Talks About Sex for the big screen — follows siblings Megan (Wood) and Nathan (Gad), who are barely hanging on in present-day America, like all of us. Their lives are completely upended when they discover a dead body, long buried in their parent’s basement, sending them down a rabbit hole of crime and murder.
Winter will produce alongside Scott Kroopf of Many Rivers Productions and Russell Hollander, with Connie Tavel serving as exec producer.

The Oscar category of Best Original Song seems to have a concrete group of four tunes anticipated to be selected as nominees for Tuesday’s announcement. They include Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award winner “Naatu Naatu” from “Rrr” (M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose), plus “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, and “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio”. That leaves at least one spot potentially open for a surprise nominee. When predicting the song category, it is best to keep in mind that the music branch clearly has their favorites, and that usually tends to fill up a couple uncertain slots. This year, two of those songwriters may have a better shot at another Oscar nomination than most people think: perennial nominees Diane Warren for “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” and J. Ralph for “Dust & Ash” from the documentary...

Responsible for arguably two of the best horror films of the 21st century in Dog Soldiers and The Descent, Neil Marshall’s name used to be synonymous with, at the very least, a bloody good time. More recently though – since his brief foray into TV, helming huge episodes of Game of Thrones, Westworld and the like – his features haven’t so much taken a bit of a knock as they’ve fallen off a cliff. The one-two of 2019’s dire Hellboy reboot, and 2020’s even-more-dire witch drama The Reckoning well and truly knocked his name out of favour for many. And whilst his latest – good old fashioned monster mash The Lair – is definitely a swing in the right direction for the director, it’s unlikely it’ll win him any new fans.

John Sturges' 1963 war epic "The Great Escape," based on true events surrounding a massive prison break from a Polish Nazi P.O.W. camp during World War II, climaxes with one of the more famous stunts in cinema history. After having escaped from the camp, American soldier Captain Virgil Hilts (Steve McQueen) boosts a motorcycle and leads his Nazi pursuers on a glorious chase through the German countryside toward the Swiss border. According to cinema lore, and confirmed in Marshall Terrill's 2020 biography "Steve McQueen: In His Own Words," many of the shots in that final chase are of McQueen himself. McQueen was an avid motorcyclist, and was given permission to ride his very own 650 cc Triumph TR6 Trophy on camera for "The Great Escape." Thanks to the magic of editing, McQueen also played one of his own motorcycle-mounted Nazi pursuers in the same sequence.

Prime Video’s A League of Their Own offers a delightful, though rare experience: at times it can be harder to remember who on is straight, rather than who’s gay. One of the strongest aspects of the new show, the queer representation was notably lacking from the original film. It’s a matter of historical fact that there were queer players in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (A.A.G.P.B.L.), upon which both the 1992 Penny Marshall movie and the 2022 Amazon Prime Video series are based. Moreover, as the series makes clear, charm school, policing players’ clothing both on the field and off, and the use of chaperones, were part of an effort to ensure players were perceived as straight. The 14 Oscar nominations Alex North received for his film scores between 1952 and 1985 make him one of the most-recognized composers in academy history, but also one of the most overlooked, as all of his outings were unsuccessful. He did, however, earn the organization’s esteem in 1986 as the recipient of an honorary Oscar – the first given to an artist in his music field. Now, the academy’s board of governors have chosen to fill in another blank space by making Diane Warren the first songwriter on their list of honorary awardees. After 13 unfortunate Best Original Song losses, the time has finally come for the perennial contender to have her day in the sun.

"Maybe you're both bottoms and that's the problem." Universal Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for Bros, a new romantic comedy from filmmaker Nick Stoller. This fall, Universal proudly presents the very first romantic comedy from a major studio about two gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They're both very busy. Starring Billy Eichner, the first openly gay man to co-write and star in his own major studio film, described as "a smart, swoony and heartfelt comedy about finding sex, love and romance amidst the madness." The big cast includes Luke Macfarlane, Jim Rash, Bowen Yang, Ts Madison, Guillermo Díaz, Miss Lawrence, Harvey Fierstein, and Symone. This is a hilarious meta trailer that rips apart Hollywood for even trying to have Eichner make a gay romcom, but then gets into some of the craziness with some real footage. Looks cute! After Jussie Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in jail and 30 months of probation for staging a hate crime against himself, the former “Empire” star is at the center of a #FreeJussie campaign with fellow actors speaking out.
Alfre Woodard, Samuel L. Jackson, his wife Latanya Richardson Jackson, and more previously asked Illinois Judge James B. Linn to not sentence Smollett to prison time in a letter written to the judge. Jackson wrote that Smollett “comes from a good family” that can “provide the support and monitoring assistance that they can provide for him in an alternative probation scenario.”
The “Pulp Fiction” star continued, “Jussie has already suffered a great deal of punishment, as this situation has destroyed his existing career and impugned his reputation. Please Judge Linn, in God’s name, please save this young man and allow him to be of service. Jussie Smollett is worth the risk and the investment.

“There’s a lot of comments,” she says, from people at “the end of their rope, where the song gave them hope and made them stronger.
