Back in 2021, it was revealed that the legendary George A. Romero (who passed away in 2017) had left behind a treatment for the “seventh and final installment” in his Dead franchise – following Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead. The story Romero had come up with used a title than many fans expected him to use for his follow-up to Day, Twilight of the Dead, and the team of Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati, who also worked on the treatment with Romero, were working on fleshing it out into a screenplay. Last month, we heard that Twilight of the Dead had secured funding from Roundtable Entertainment. And now we know who’s going to direct the film: Session 9 director Brad Anderson!

Prime Video dropped a sneak peek of “Wheel of Time” Season 2 ahead of its release on Sept. 1, which fans can now watch at the end of last season’s finale.
According to the Amazon-owned streamer, the special look “reflects the structure of the best-selling and epic “The Wheel of Time” book series by Robert Jordan,” in which he would add the first chapter of the next book as a preview.
The scene, which opens the first episode of the second season, is an adaptation of the fan favorite “Darkfriend Social” prologue of the second novel of Jordan’s series, “The Great Hunt,” upon which “Wheel of Time” Season 2 is largely based. It’s also based on some elements of Jordan’s third novel, “The Dragon Reborn.”

The “Mean Girls” musical has cast “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm as Coach Carr. The Emmy-winning actor and star of “Confess, Fletch” and “Beirut” will play the school’s gym teacher and sex-ed instructor. The film will adapt the Broadway musical, which in turn was an adaptation of the 2004 theatrical comedy “Mean Girls.”
The Paramount film, about a teen girl who moves from Africa with her anthropologist parents and finds herself unprepared for the community dynamics of an American public high school earned solid reviews and grossed $130 million worldwide on a $17 million budget in early 2004, becoming a generational touchstone on par with “Clueless” and “Heathers.” This live-action musical version will debut on Paramount+.

Vampirism has been treated as a metaphor for more prosaic addictions in movies before. In “Blood,” however, it’s one more hassle a recovering addict doesn’t need added to the burdens of her already discordant family life. Starring Michelle Monaghan as a mother just out of rehab whose young son gets bitten — then develops an insatiable appetite for the titular fluid — Brad Anderson’s film steers a middle course between dysfunctional domestic drama and supernatural horror. That balance doesn’t completely work. But solid performances and some strong, occasionally unpleasant content make this an involving if not entirely satisfying watch. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to limited U.S. theaters this Friday, then On Demand platforms Jan. 31.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad) will be starring in The Silent Hour, an action thriller that’s set to be directed by Brad Anderson (The Call). Now Variety has broken the news that Kinnaman has been joined in the cast by Mark Strong (Zero Dark Thirty).
Anderson will be directing The Silent Hour from a screenplay by Dan Hall. When Kinnaman’s casting was announced, we were told he’ll be playing a Boston Police Detective who suffers an on-the-job accident that leaves him hearing impaired. Sixteen months later, he is now an interpreter for the department and must battle a team of corrupt cops attempting to eliminate a deaf murder witness in an apartment building.
Which made it sound like Kinnaman’s character will be taking on the team of corrupt cops by himself. Apparently that’s not the case, as Variety...

It may well be an unconscious impulse but the writers are directly or indirectly influenced by their socio-political millieu, even when opposing it, and you don’t need to be a Marxist to acknowledge that.
As Edward Said showed in his examination of ‘Orientalism’, or recent works showcasing the overt or covert politics of such literary figures as William Wordsworth (Jonathan Bate’s "Radical Wordsworth: The Poet Who Changed the World") and Jane Austen, politics can intrude into the poetic realm or comedies of manners — or other forms of fiction, too. And this can span the entire gamut from literary classics to pulp fiction.
The Cold War is a fitting example. As two contrasting systems of social and political organisation vied for global influence, the conflict for influencing hearts and minds underpinned the diplomatic and military manoeuvres.

Jon Hamm is on a whirlwind press tour. The actor and his Top Gun: Maverick castmates started in San Diego, where they attended the film’s stateside premiere before flying to the Cannes Film Festival (then flew back out in less than a day). Next, they were off to London, all in pursuit of a grand return to movie theaters. This week, Hamm pivots to celebrating his Kafkaesque workplace satire Corner Office at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here, he opines about the film biz and post-pandemic recalibrations.

The unmitigated boredom and lackluster unoriginality “All the Old Knives” prides itself on shouldn’t shock anyone. After a long line of dreary espionage flicks — “The 355,” “Red Sparrow,” “Wasp Network,” “Beirut” and so forth — Hollywood, outside of the dependable action franchises like “James Bond” and “Mission Impossible,” has been inconsistent at best, producing spy thrillers that possess an enthralling mix of explosions and romance.

One of a few documentaries at Glasgow's 2022 Film Festival to explore America's parallel carceral state(s), Hold Your Fire is a about an incident widely regarded as being the birth of hostage negotiation. In New York, 1973, four young black men held up a sporting goods store, seeking to acquire (more) guns. Needless to say, things did not go according to plan.
The scenarios since are sufficiently familiar that there are at least two films called The Negotiator, but also that audiences might be expected to be familiar enough with them that Spike Lee can play with those conventions in Inside Man. The scenarios before are filmed too, mention made of 1972's Chase Manhattan siege as Dog Day Afternoon and the contemporary incident in Munich. What's weirder is the bleeding edge of futurity, New York skylines which only recently had added buildings that are now no longer there,...

The 16th annual Final Draft Awards took place on Tuesday, March 2, during an online ceremony. Hosted by Final Draft president Shelly Mellot, the first female appointed in the 30-year history, many awards contenders in the writing categories were honored in both film and television.
While accepting the award, Sorkin said, “the Zeitgeist crashed into us” and that he had no idea how much about today “The Trial of the Chicago 7” would end up being. This was an added boost to his awards campaign after winning the Golden Globe last Sunday for best screenplay.
Also, Final Draft announced the 2020 Big Break® Screenwriting Contest winners, which received over 10,000 submissions from writers worldwide, a record number for the organization.

Every day on the set of “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Sacha Baron Cohen, in the spirit of collaborative filmmaking, gave his director Aaron Sorkin ideas for cool things to stick into his screenplay. And every day, Sorkin politely said, “No.”
Sorkin likes to say that he’s already thought of everything as he paced around his office, acting out all the lines his characters are going to say. And after 10 years in the making, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Paramount/Netflix) is certainly deserving of the first ever Zeitgeist Final Draft Award for “a writer whose work consistently captures the mood of our time,” said presenter Baron Cohen.

Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!

Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. Even in any normal year, trying to predict what will and won’t land at the Sundance film festival is something of a fool’s errand. It’s a lineup filled with small, often totally unknown films, most of which don’t yet have distribution, a long list of italicised question marks waiting to be underlined or erased and what makes it all that much harder to predict is that the movies that premiere with big names are often the biggest disasters. In recent editions, films such as Eighth Grade, The Farewell, Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Hereditary all came from nowhere to end up going somewhere while more obviously starry fare such as Four Good Days (Glenn Close and Mila Kunis), The Last Thing He Wanted (Anne Hathaway and Ben Affleck...

Netflix came into Emmy Week with a record 160 nominations to HBO’s second-place 107. But the home of Succession and Watchmen had a 28% win ratio, more than doubling the streamer’s 13%. Pop TV finished a distant third with 10 combined wins, including nine for Schitt’s Creek. Only Watchmen had more this year, finishing with 11 statuettes.

After winning seven Emmy Awards on Sunday for Season 2, including Best Drama Series and Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Jeremy Strong, the third season of HBO’s Succession can’t come fast enough. And, of course, the pandemic has just thrown a wrench in production.
Strong, appearing at the Emmys virtual backstage before tonight’s double-winning creator Jesse Armstrong, said that in regards to Season 3’s production start “we’re hoping sometime this fall-winter as soon as things are safe. I know there’s plans in the works. I’m certainly ready to get back to it.”

“We have a record number of Black Emmy nominees this year, which is great,” black-ish star Anthony Anderson began as he presented at the 2020 Emmys. “These Emmys would have been the NBA All-Star weekend and Wakanda all wrapped into one.”
“This was supposed to be the Blackest Emmys ever. Y’all wouldn’t be able to handle how Black it was going to be,” said Anderson, “but because of Covid, we can’t even get in the damn building!”

“These Emmys would have been so Black it would have been like hot sauce in your purse Black,” he continued. “It would have been Howard University homecoming Black. It would have been ‘you fit the description’ Black.”
“But, you know what? I’m still rooting for everybody Black, because Black stories, Black performance and Black lives matter,...

In 2020 there was an uptick in Emmy nominees from historically marginalized communities compared with 2019 — mainly with Black actors and performers. In fact, Emmy nominations for Black performers set a record this year and, in turn, there was a record number of trophies given to Black performers. And when it comes to LGBTQ representation, Schitt’s Creek waved the rainbow flag proudly with nine wins total and made history by sweeping the comedy categories.
On the acting side, there were more than 30 people of color nominated, while actors who have openly identified as members of the LGBTQ+ community took in nearly a dozen nominations. On the hosting side, six people of color were nominated while seven people who identified as LGBTQ+ received nods.

The politics at this year’s Emmy Awards reflected a year of chaos and consternation: a polarizing election, the police brutality protests and, most recently, the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The most frequent message from winners, though, was a simple plea to just get out and vote.
“For any of you who have not registered to vote, please do so, and then go out and vote, because that is the only way we are going to have some love and acceptance out there,” said Daniel Levy, accepting the seventh award that Schitt’s Creek won during the evening. “I’m so sorry for making this political, but I had to.”

On an Emmy night dominated by HBO and Schitt’s Creek, streaming services were largely marginalized, taking three supporting actor prizes and a fourth for best limited-series directing.
HBO, riding Succession and Watchmen in particular, dominated the network rankings of networks, capturing 30 wins out of its 107 total nominations. It took 11 prizes on the Primetime Emmys telecast tonight.
Pop TV, the small, ViacomCBS-owned network that championed the Canadian Schitt’s Creek in the U.S., scored seven Primetime Emmys and 10 in all. Schitt’s was decorated in historic fashion in its sixth and final season, sweeping in all seven categories, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

The results stood in contrast with the decidedly stream-y tableau in some recent years, when shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Handmaid’s Tale managed stunning wins in marquee categories.

Some things never change. Here we are at the end of the 72nd Emmy Awards and once again the story in terms of major wins is HBO, proving it could lose Emmy juggernauts like Game of Thrones and Veep and one year later come back just as strong with wins in Best Drama Series for Succession, and Limited Series for Watchmen, plus on top of that pulling off an upset win making Zendaya the youngest winner ever in Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria, a year-old show few thought would be remembered at Emmy time.
Of course, HBO is sharing the glory on this night with Pop TV and the absolute rout in the comedy categories, with all seven of those wins going to Schitt’s Creek, a comeback story like no other in its sixth and final season. The irony, as I have previously noted (and did again...

“These are the strangest of days,” Catherine O’Hara said Sunday night when the Schitt’s Creek star grabbed the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. That’s putting it politely, as Canadians so often do.
The Sctv alum was standing in a masked and socially distanced Toronto viewing party with her castmates, but O’Hara also nailed the paradox of pulling off the 2020 Emmy Awards in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
With Jimmy Kimmel back for a hat-trick hosting stint, the three-hour-plus ceremony saw big wins for Schitt’s Creek, Watchmen, Succession, Euphoria’s Zendaya, The Morning Show’s Billy Crudup and Ozark’s Julia Garner. What the HBO-dominated Emmys also saw was a big warning to the Golden Globes and the Oscars to be prepared to up their game before hitting the air next year, virtual or not.
