Phạm Ngọc Lân's The Unseen River is exclusively showing on Mubi in many countries in the series Brief Encounters. Behind the scenes of The Unseen RiverIn early 2019, Luang Prabang Film Festival picked out five directors from five different Southeast Asian countries that the Mekong River runs through. Making use of financial resources from local NGOs focused on protecting the Mekong, they asked each director to make a short film about this river.I saw a different potential in learning about the impact of the river on human thinking. I opted not to limit my story to the social and ecological impacts as outlined in the documents that the film festivals and the NGOs had generously provided for us for researching material. In the South, Mekong is a Buddhist river. All the nations and regions that the Mekong flows through are influenced, in various degrees, by Buddhist thought, be it Hinayana or Mahayana.

Hello everyone! We’re back to give you the lowdown on another week of home media releases, and while we don’t have a ton of titles on tap, there are still a few key releases genre fans are going to want to pick up this Tuesday.

Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence is also headed to both formats this week, or if you’re in the mood for something a little more old school, both The Unseen and Slithis are getting the Blu-ray treatment on Tuesday as well.

Exclusive: My5, the streaming service run by ViacomCBS’s UK network Channel 5, has acquired British comedy series Hapless, which first started life as a self-released project on Amazon Prime Video.
The six-part series was created, written, and produced by Gary Sinyor and stars Outlander and Paddington actor Tim Downie as Paul Green, a journalist on the UK’s fourth most successful Jewish newspaper.
The series first launched on Amazon last year under the title The Jewish Enquirer, but with industry production slowing down during the coronavirus pandemic, Sinyor saw an opportunity to pitch the show to a broadcaster. It goes live on My5 in March
Hapless co-stars Geoffrey McGivern (Little Dorrit) and Lucy Montgomery (Tracey Ullman’s Show) as Green’s father and sister, while Josh Howie (Call Me Alvy) features as the journalist’s best friend. Sinyor himself provides the voice of Green’s narrow-minded editor.

Happy 2021, everyone! It’s been a few weeks, but we’re back with a brand-new edition of our weekly Blu-ray and DVD releases column to kick off this new year. And while we may not have a ton of titles headed home on Tuesday, we do have an excellent bunch of films all the same, including one of my favorite films of 2020, Love and Monsters, which hits various formats this week. Another film from last year that I really enjoyed was Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift, which hits both Blu-ray and DVD (and will be available On Demand) tomorrow, and if you have somehow never seen it, I highly recommend picking up the new Blu for Savage Streets, featuring Linda Blair.
Other releases for January 5th include Tintorera… Tiger Shark, From the Depths, Nina of the Woods, and Hacksaw.

Oft times, documentaries portray an issue or situation peculiar to a certain region or country, which is known to all within that region but not many outside of it are even aware of. Iranian director Behzad Nalbandi tackles something similar in his latest documentary “The Unseen”.
“The Unseen” is screening at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema 2020
Homeless people in Tehran, the capital of Iran, are called Cardboard People because of their desperate habit of practically living out of and sleeping in cardboard boxes. When foreign dignitaries or government higher-ups visit the city, these homeless people are removed from the street and put into detention centres. While the males are released after a few days, the women never get to enjoy freedom again, spending the rest of their lives in such detention centres amidst terrible conditions. In Iran, homeless street people are known as “the cardboard box sleepers.” With compassionate irony, The Unseen (Kaghaz-pareh ha) uses the same humble medium to tell truths too harsh to be spoken face-to-face. Graphic artist and documaker Behzad Nalbandi spent five years preparing and editing the film, a remarkably intimate portrait of five unfortunate women living in a shelter in Tehran that gets under the skin. Yet none of them appears on screen. Their recorded voices fill the mouths of animated figures, creating a distancing effect that makes their sad stories palatable and, dare one say, novel ...
What more can be said about Chuck Norris? The ubiquitous ’80s B star, he made a series of mostly bland actioners that would only come alive if the director brought a little something different to the table, because they certainly weren’t going to work with an actor who has the charisma of a constipated two-by-four. This brings us to Silent Rage (1982), a hybrid sci-fi/horror/kung fu effort that is quite effective when it pushes away from The Hairy One’s usual antics. You want to see Michael Myers karate chopped by Lone Wolf McQuade? Step right up.
Okay he’s not Michael Myers, but he may as well be; Pov shots and the unstoppable killer’s relentless gait definitely harken back to Halloween and even the previous year’s Halloween II in a bid for some of that sweet slasher bread. It worked well enough at the box office,...

Listen I have nothing against ants – rubber tree plants, veracity, etc – but put enough of them together and I get nervous. Radiate them? You get the big ass ones in Them! (1954). Delve into cosmic circumstance and you have the smarty pants overlords of Phase IV (1974). Throw a bunch on the television, make them poisonous and you end up with The Love Boat meets The Towering Inferno goofiness of Robert Scheerer’s It Happened at Lakewood Manor (1977), a pretty silly and damn entertaining TV flick.

If you quote the columnist on the poster, you get into the poster column. All kidding aside, I was a big fan of Geoff Redknap's The Unseen, a Canuck-indie take on The Invisible Man story, and the quirky original artwork by Andrew Barr, that debuted at the Fantasia Film Festival in 2016. Here, after Raven Banner picked up the distribution of the film, is a slightly more conventional, dark and brooding take that might be confused, at first glance, with an eco horror or monster picture (along the lines of The Last Winter or The Thing), if it were indeed not for the pull quotes at the top. A nice touch here is the credit block in the middle of the poster, so translucent (on...

Not everyone owns a Steinmann, or has seen one for that matter. They are an acquired taste, much like doing a deep scrub on your tongue with a Brillo pad, or massaging pickle juice into your eyes. They’re not for everyone, is what I’m saying. I’m of course referring to writer/director Danny Steinmann, former porn auteur (and still quite dead), helmer of Savage Streets (1984), Friday the 13th: Roy’s Boy (‘85), and today’s topic of discussion, The Unseen (1980). To say that a film about a killer inbred man-baby is his subtlest work is testament to his next level commitment for producing entertaining sleaze. Were it not for bad taste, he wouldn’t have shown any at all.
Released in Japan and Denmark in late ’80 with a September ’81 rollout stateside from World Northal, The Unseen came and went, well, unseen by most. Steinmann himself disowned it; he...

The Unseen is less about an invisible curse, and more about a family-man whose broken heart beats for the wife and daughter he left behind. You’ll sample grotesque glimpses into man’s usually-covered inner workings, but writer/director Geoff Redknap’s feature debut isn’t about horrors or scares. Instead, the veteran makeup artist/special effects guru parlays his prosthetic talents into an unnerving quest for one unlucky father, ripe with emotion and angst. You’ll get your Frankenstein-like reveals that make you gasp in astonishment, along with actual story constructs deeper than a few Hollow Man homages. This is genre work that offers something a little more than cheap thrills.

Jo Satana will be delivering reviews from films exhibiting at the 2016 Fantasia International Film Festival!
Judging by the people lining up before The Unseen`s world premiere at Fantasia, I can tell you that at least a few have, at one point in time, probably wished they were invisible. I mean, who hasn’t? But once the novelty of hiding in public restrooms wears off (trust me, it does), what can you be left with other than that crushing feeling of solitude? Another sentiment some of those in line can relate to.
The Unseen is exactly the type of film I love discovering at Fantasia. It`s also the type of film I hate writing about because of how much of the Kool-Aid® it looks like I’ve consumed. All aboard the hype train!
The Unseen is a stinging, intimate tribute to those of us who just want to be left alone with our struggles.
