Emily Alyn Lind is still haunted by her work on horror movie 'Enter the Void' when she was five years old.The 'Gossip Girl' star played a young girl who sees her family killed in a car accident in the 2009 film, and she remembers the gory scenes vividly despite her young age and believes it inspired her to take on darker parts as an adult.Emily, now 21, told The Hollywood Reporter: "That [film] was such an experience in and of itself. I don’t know if it’s paranormal, but it feels like the ghost of my past at this point. I was like five years old, and it was the craziest experience. "People tell me: 'Oh, you don’t remember being five or six years old,' and I’m always like: 'I do, because I basically lived through a traumatic experience'."Yes, it was fake,...

Hollywood has fallen in love with two things in recent years: remakes and adaptations.
Television is flush with remakes of beloved classics. From sitcoms to dramas, a slew of programs are currently airing, with some getting a 21st-century reimaging that audiences have connected with.
There are also plenty of adaptations out there, beloved books that have spawned award-winning television fare, think Game of Thrones, and quirky romantic dramas with passionate fanbases like Virgin River.
Horror shows, in general, are hard to come by on television, though Disney+ has seen much success with its Goosebumps series, which was recently renewed for a second season.
Based on the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine, the supernatural horror series brought in longtime readers of the popular books and new viewers experiencing the lore for the first time.
Perhaps the most well-known and popular adaptation of all time, The Walking Dead, still reigns supreme some fourteen years after its premiere,...

Alongside actresses like Jenna Ortega, Aussie actress Samara Weaving is one of the modern scream queens. And it doesn’t hurt that the horror genre is as popular as ever, making these actresses increasingly popular for making scary pics. The term “scream queen” gets thrown around a lot, even applied to actors who have only done a handful of horror films. But if any young performer deserves the title, it’s Samara Weaving. Not only does she star in the very gruesome post-apocalyptic horror-action movie Azrael, directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (The Guest), which just premiered at SXSW 2024, but she’s been in The Babysitter, Scream VI, and Ready or Not, among others. In fact, when we ask Weaving at the festival whether she likes being referred to as a “scream queen,” she answers quickly, “Yeah, why not? ‘Scream Queen’ is great. I’ll take it!”
For Weaving, the appeal of horror movies goes beyond the guts and gore most often associated with the genre. “It’s such a good vehicle to explore so many things,” she tells Den of Geek. “For [Azrael], it...

Samara Weaving has earned modern scream queen status with roles in films like The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Mayhem, Ready or Not, Scream VI, and the upcoming horror action movie Azrael, plus a few episodes of the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Since Weaving has worked in both the Scream and Evil Dead franchises, she was asked during a new interview with Collider which horror franchise she would like to be a part of next. Her answer: Nightmare on Elm Street.
The filmmakers behind Azrael had originally wanted to cast Billie Eilish in the role Weaving ended up playing. So when she was asked the horror franchise question, she said, “Nightmare on Elm Street. I can do it. Unless Billie Eilish gets it now.“

Last August, we heard that Imagine Entertainment had picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and now Deadline has a cool update on the project: 20th Century Studios has come out the winner in a bidding war over the Whalefall theatrical distribution rights, and Brian Duffield – who recently worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – has signed on to co-write, direct, and produce the film.
Duffield is working on the screenplay with Kraus, and here’s the story they’ll be bringing to the screen: Jay Gardiner has given himself a fool’s errand – to find the remains of his deceased father in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach. Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple studios bidding, 20th Century Studios has reeled in theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller Whalefall, based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
Aboard to co-write, direct, and produce the film is Brian Duffield, who has a strong relationship with 20th President Steve Asbell and his team, following their work together on the acclaimed sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. Imagine snapped the book up for development in a pre-emptive film rights deal last summer, as we were first to report.
Published last summer by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Whalefall is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The book is about a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. Samara Weaving is buckling up for 20th Century Studios forthcoming heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Sitting shotgun for the project is Karl Glusman, with writer-director Shawn Simmons at the helm. Producing the fast-paced thriller is Deadpool franchise alums Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
In Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving plays Edie, “a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.” (via Deadline)
Glusman hits the pavement as John, Edie’s recurrent boyfriend. Despite their differences, Edie feels compelled to pull John out of the flames of a terrible situation.
As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

Anyone who knows me would say my taste runs ever so slightly counter to the popular opinion but up top I wanted to shout out some big titles that I appreciate but didn’t quite make my favorites list. Oftentimes it feels like the days of true-blue horror icons are behind us, but Gerard Johnstone and Akela Cooper’s M3GAN was a veritable hoot that gave us an instantly iconic tiny terror in tights who more than lived up to the memes and showed everyone that hasn’t quite come around yet on HBO’s Girls just how #mother Allison Williams is. Also, that Skatt Brothers “Walk the Night” needle drop took up residence in my head last January and has not left. Talk to Me was one of the more intense in-theater experiences I had this year, and though it lost something the more I sat with it, what...

The best way I can describe the past year is as a year of trend shifts in the film zeitgeist. In a film environment where the most popular discussions often revolved around the never-ending slate of superhero blockbusters (and Martin Scorsese’s opinions on them for some reason), 2023 positioned itself as a time of change in the film industry.
Between the struggles faced by once-dominant cape flicks to break even at the box office and the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes being at the forefront of industry shakeups into awards season, 2023 has been a year of unlikely and/or unusual success stories for off-kilter genre movies.
In 2023 alone, we bore witness to a horror game adaptation outperforming superhero movies from both Marvel and DC, video game movies in general overtaking the conversation surrounding films and of course, the Barbenheimer double feature born from a meme before blossoming into two of the most successful films of the year.

Horror remains as vital as ever. While other films flounder at the box office, horror almost always reigns supreme. Audiences simply cannot get enough. We inherently love to be scared; to be disturbed; to be frightened. To sit in the dark and let something scary take hold of us. The horror films of 2023 were an eclectic bunch — weird, wonderful, both fresh and familiar. Slasher throwbacks, modernist takes on classic tropes, and bold new voices in the genre all presented themselves to us, giving us the creeps in the process.
As is always the case when making a list like this, it's important to recognize the titles that didn't make the cut. So while we're proud of our ranked list of the top 10 horror movies of 2023, we also want to highlight several titles not on the list — "Knock at the Cabin," "The Sacrifice Game," "Haunted Mansion," "The Conference," "The Outwaters," "The Passenger,...

Christmas is the only time you will catch me watching this kind of rom-com, as I usually find the stories too repetitive and uninteresting. Christmas is the only time you will catch me watching this kind of rom-com, as I usually find the stories too repetitive and uninteresting. I, and most audiences watching, know exactly what is going to happen in this type of movie, even before I’ve watched it but that really doesn’t make any difference in my enjoyment of it.

Consider the career of one Joseph McGinty Nichol, better known by the nom de plume McG. This is a man whose directorial debut as a feature filmmaker in 2000 was the paradigm-shifting, zeitgeist-grabbing, new millennium bar-setter "Charlie's Angels." Sit with that for a moment. His next film? The extraordinary sequel "Full Throttle." Mind you these were gigs that star and producer Drew Barrymore personally sought out McG for based on the music videos he made for the band Sugar Ray. One of the more significant sliding doors moments in modern American history is the fact that McG was the original frontman for the band that would become Sugar Ray, before humbly realizing his talents lay elsewhere and convincing high school buddy Mark McGrath to take over.
McG helped launch and executive produce both "The Oc" and "Supernatural," he produced "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" and "Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,...

Filmed near the end of 2015, director McG’s horror comedy The Babysitter was released through the Netflix streaming service during the Halloween season of 2017 – and not only did it help establish Samara Weaving as a modern genre icon, it also did well enough to spawn a sequel. The Babysitter: Killer Queen was released by Netflix in September of 2020. Three years later (and eight years after he was in production on the first film), McG has confirmed to ComicBook.com that he’s still interested in making The Babysitter 3!
McG said, “We’re still talking about it. It was fun. The first movie, obviously, gave Samara Weaving to the world, and the second movie was Jenna Ortega. Hopefully we can answer the call and find a third star that reaches those lofty heights.“
The director previously told our friends at Bloody Disgusting, “There have always been three beats to this story. There’s the first beat,...

Released in 2020, The Babysitter: Killer Queen was a sequel to 2017’s The Babysitter, bringing back the main players to continue the tale of a young man and his struggles with a devil-worshiping cult that just can’t seem to die. The post-credits scene showed that the Devil’s Book is still hanging around, but does that mean a third movie is in the works?
According to director McG, who helmed both The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen, the possibility of a third film in the franchise is very much still on the table.
“Yeah, we’re still talking about it,” McG tells ComicBook.com. “It was fun. The first movie, obviously, gave Samara Weaving to the world, and the second movie was Jenna Ortega. Hopefully we can answer the call and find a third star that reaches those lofty heights.”

It was a moment film nerds could only dream of: Actor/director Joe Lynch was seated next to Quentin Tarantino at an event, and they were going deep on lenses. Specifically, how Tarantino had gotten his mitts on Ultra Panavision 70, a 70mm format from Ben Hur, for his 2015 Western The Hateful Eight. Not much could distract Lynch from a moment like that — until he heard Stuart Gordon, of Re-Animator fame, discussing his latest collaboration with screenwriter Dennis Paoli: a modern-day retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s story “The Thing at the Doorstep” called Suitable Flesh.

H.P. Lovecraft is easily one of the least sexy writers of all time but that hasn’t stopped director Joe Lynch (Mayhem) from dusting off one of ole grandad’s tentacle-less tales and spinning it into a true-blue Erotic Thriller. Paying homage to the prestige De Palma’s pictures that elevated the genre, and the trashier lesser-known titles that flooded the early 90s, Suitable Flesh is a dreamy, steamy, soft-core vibe full of body-swapping & bonin’ down.
Set in the Miskatonic Universe, this tawdry tale takes a break from the weird gods and even weirder monsters that make up so many of Lovecraft’s other stories. Elizabeth Derby (played by Heather Graham) is a psychiatrist specializing in dissociative identity disorder whose life gets flip-turned upside-down after meeting with a mysterious new patient, named Asa Waite.

The character of Lina in The Conference, played by Katia Winter, is well-rounded, having a strong voice of her own. Her individuality makes her stand out from the rest of the people at her office. The actress is known for the significant roles she played in award-winning series like Dexter and Sleepy Hollow. Streaming on Netflix, the Swedish film has been directed by Patrik Eklund, and it is worth mentioning that even in a gore thriller, the director has been able to shape the character of the protagonist quite well. The Conference can be compared to other gore slasher films like Wrong Turn, Final Destination, The Babysitter, and others. Lina dares to question the injustice that her company has caused to a farmer and his family by uprooting from their land. This costs her some ugly stares from her colleagues. How she manages to find proof of the wrongdoing and...

Any project Samara Weaving is involved with has our attention here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, so we’ve been anxiously waiting to hear updates on the action horror film Azrael, in which Weaving plays the title character. A great update has reached us today, as Republic Pictures has acquired the North American distribution rights to Azrael, for release through Paramount Global Distribution, in a high seven figure deal. The high-concept feature comes with a strong horror pedigree. It is toplined by Samara Weaving, a star in the genre thanks to Ready or Not and The Babysitter movie series, and was directed by E.L. No distribution plans were revealed, but there is hope for a theatrical release.

When you weren't looking, Brian Duffield snuck in and suddenly became one of the coolest names in original genre cinema. With his scripts for the slasher comedy "The Babysitter," the deep sea survival horror-thriller "Underwater," and the post-apocalyptic monster movie "Love and Monsters," Duffield has demonstrated a clear appreciation for not just the tropes of specific genres but also how to use them (and when to subvert them) to explore the human condition.
Much like his feature writing/directing debut, the teen horror rom-com "Spontaneous," uses the metaphor of high schoolers spontaneously combusting to talk about the malaise that plagues everyone in the 21st century (but especially young people), Duffield's second movie as a writer and director, "No One Will Save You," is all about the universal struggle of making peace with the mistakes of your past when personal salvation seems impossible. Why isn't every genre fan talking about Brian Duffield? He served as the screenwriter of fan-favorite hits like "The Babysitter," "Underwater," "Love and Monsters," and the new Netflix animated series, "Skull Island." He also made his directorial feature debut with the explosively emotional "Spontaneous," which I will fully admit was my #1 film of 2020. Now, Duffield is back with the alien invasion film "No One Will Save You," featuring "Booksmart," "Rosaline," and "Unbelievable" star, Kaitlyn Dever. The film is yet another homerun for Duffield, but the story differs from his usual snappy dialogue and witty banter, as Dever's character, Brynn, isn't one for talking.
/Films own Ethan Anderton recently had the chance to chat with Duffield about the film and learned what led to a story with minimal dialogue. Turns out, it was kind of an accident. "There's a moment in the movie where Kaitlyn's character goes for help, and it doesn't go well,...

Brian Duffield is one of the most exciting genre filmmakers working in Hollywood today. His screenplay for the Western "Jane Got a Gun" was a gem that got tarnished by behind-the-scenes chaos. He bounced back with the clever horror romp "The Babysitter," and enjoyed a breakout 2020 with his scripts for "Love and Monsters" and "Underwater," and, most importantly, his directorial debut "Spontaneous." Duffield's adaptation of Aaron Starmer's darkly satiric novel about teenage romance in the age of school shootings hit the bullseye; it was hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure, and, for a movie about kids inexplicably exploding, didn't skimp on the gore. At all. The film went hard because it had to.
Duffield's latest, "No One Will Save You," plays just as rough. The film stars Kaitlyn Dever as a young woman who lives by herself in a roomy rural house, which, one dark night, is broken into...

"No One Will Save You" arrives on Hulu this weekend, and it's a meticulously crafted, original sci-fi movie with plenty of twists and turns. The film comes from director/writer Brian Duffield, who may not be a household name, but he's written the script for some low-key great genre movies like "Underwater" with Kristen Stewart, "Love & Monsters" with Dylan O'Brien, and "The Babysitter" films on Netflix. Plus, he directed the acclaimed dark romantic comedy "Spontaneous," which you should seek out immediately if you haven't seen it.
With "No One Will Save You," Duffield delivers a suspenseful sci-fi thriller with Kaitlyn Dever playing a character who is suddenly caught in the middle of an alien invasion of her small town. What's even more impressive than the thrills and mysteries that drive the movie is the fact that it's executed with practically zero dialogue. Funnily enough, that kinda happened by accident.

‘No One Will Save You’ Filmmaker Brian Duffield on the Long Road to His Alien Home Invasion Thriller
No One Will Save You filmmaker Brian Duffield has experienced many twists and turns throughout his 13-year career.
After making the Black List in 2010, he pulled off the same feat in 2011 with his Jane Got a Gun spec script, which went on to endure one of the most dramatic journeys to the big screen in recent memory. In 2013, Duffield was hired to write the dystopian sci-fi film Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent (2014), and that became one of the assignments that helped him realize that he was better suited for writing on spec. In 2014, Duffield made the Black List again for his spec The Babysitter, and his produced spec scripts now include Jane Got a Gun (2015), The Babysitter (2017), Underwater (2020), Love and Monsters (2020) and No One Will Save You (2023).

One of my most eagerly anticipated horror releases of the year is the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Suitable Flesh, which is coming our way from the team of director Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem), screenwriter Dennis Paoli – who has contributed to the screenplays for some of the most popular H.P.
