Amnesia has always been one of the more epistolary franchises out there, consigning a great deal of its storytelling to letter correspondences and fragmented journal entries.
By now, it’s an essential part of the series’ DNA. You are typically isolated in these games and often have to make sense of macabre events that transpired long ago. And when there’s no one around to explain what the hell is going on, the written word becomes your only dependable source of answers.
The latest instalment in the saga, titled The Bunker, is no exception in this regard. Once again, you are thrust into a bewildering scenario wherein most of the principal characters have already kicked the bucket before you arrive, and the inciting incident happened while you were comatose.

I first saw Lifeless Moon at the Seattle Indies Expo in 2022. At a glance, the game’s got a great visual hook: an astronaut exploring the surface of the moon crests a hill, and is suddenly confronted by a well-lit American diner. My first thought was that I really wanted to know what was happening there.
My second was that the whole thing better not turn out to be the protagonist’s coma dream. If I play one more surreal indie adventure/puzzle game where the ending reveals the whole thing was only happening in the player character’s head, somebody owes me a free sandwich.
The good news, without further spoilers, is that Lifeless Moon is not that. It’s a short, minimalist, mildly unsettling science-fiction adventure. Veterans of the genre will tear through it in a few hours or less, but it’s an interesting, memorable trip.

The inherent pull of the "Five Nights at Freddy's" (Fnaf) video game series is suspense, coupled with the raw fear of what might be waiting for you in the dark. While the core premise of each installment is fairly easy to figure out in terms of objectives, the franchise places particular emphasis on keen observation, spatial awareness, and investment into character attributes. "Fnaf" enthusiasts must have been delighted when a film adaptation of the popular video game franchise was announced, followed by a trailer that showcased security guard Mike Schmidt (John Hutcherson) going through the wringer after accepting a job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza establishment.
Just like players in the game, Mike has to keep track of video camera footage and resolve anomalies that might crop up during his night duty. However, things are more ominous than they seem, as Mike also has to contend with the four animatronic mascots...

The 5 Seconds of Summer Show, the tenth anniversary celebration that the pop-rock band hosted at the close of 2021, was part career-spanning concert film and part Saturday Night Live skit poking fun at their decade-long evolution. It featured a recreation of the video for one of their earliest releases — 2012’s “Gotta Get Out” — alongside their biggest hits, like “Youngblood” and “She Looks So Perfect,” and a funeral for their faded black skinny jeans. But the one thing that has never changed about 5Sos is their commitment to delivering an unrelenting live show.

The Shadow of the Ramlord offers an Amnesia-like experience minus all the scares.
A new Amnesia mod looks to turn the terrifying original games into something that even the most frightened gamers can enjoy. Yes, this new mod (titled The Shadow of the Ramlord) is an Amnesia game minus most of the horror found in the Amnesia series and games that follow the Amnesia school of horror design.
"Our custom story is very much directed towards the player who enjoys a deliberate pace, absorbing the narrative and level design clues, and feeling immersed in a story-first experience," writes the mod's creators on the project's diary page. "Ramlord is very much for those who found things to like from Machine for Pigs or Soma, even though the style and delivery is very unique to Dark Craft Studios, being familiar to any who have played my catalog of Lovecraftian mods for Crysis before this.

Bruno Ganz, the Swiss actor whose work ranged from playing an angel in Wim Wenders’ “Wings of Desire” to an on-the-edge-of-defeat Adolf Hitler in the much-memed “Downfall,” has died at age 77.
He died at his home in Zurich on Friday after a diagnosis of colon cancer, his agent told France 24.
In his long career, Ganz appeared in more than 80 films and TV movies, mostly in Europe. He starred as a hit man opposite Dennis Hopper in Wenders’ 1977 film noir “The American Friend,” and then reteamed with the director a decade later for “Wings of Desire,” playing an angel sent to earth to comfort dying humans, who begins to long for humanity for himself.

Twenty years and 12 features down the line, it’s still hard to peg the directorial sensibility of Michael Polish, with or without the presence of brother Mark as frequent co-writer and actor. His output has been all over the place, from early Lynchian quirkfests to the very middle-of-the-road inspirational dramedy “The Astronaut Farmer,” not to mention mediocre genre exercises, a B&W Parisian romance (“For Lovers Only”). a good movie about Jack Kerouac (“Big Sur”), and one about manure salesmen that’s about as good as that sounds (“The Smell of Success”). It remains a puzzle whether his thematic interests are more laudably diverse than they are simply arbitrary.

The P.T. demo was a horror experience unlike anything the gaming industry had ever seen. Terror hadn't spread like this since The Exorcist.
In many ways, I consider myself lucky to have grown up a horror film fan during the VHS/cable television era of entertainment. It was an arrangement that afforded many far too young individuals the opportunity to experience a sizeable chunk of horror history.
At the same time, I’ve always been jealous of the generation who experienced the revolutionary horror films of the 1960s and ‘70s at the theater. This forlorn feeling was instilled in me by my dad and others who lived through that era of horror.
While there was something annoying about their unprovoked rants about the good old days - who among us can’t say we haven’t fallen into that particular shameful pit of adulthood? - I will...

In New York before the opening, Barbet spoke with me about his editing on a "huge white wall" with Nelly Quettier (Terror's Advocate, Claire Denis' Beau Travail, Ursula Meier's Home, Léos Carax's Holy Motors), a Nanni Moretti-like Mia Madre idea, Walter Benjamin and Raoul Hausmann, the mood of Georgia O'Keeffe's house,...

Subtext isn’t exactly Barbet Schroeder’s primary concern in Amnesia, his first dramatic feature since 2008’s poorly received Inju: The Beast In The Shadow (which never even got a U.S. release). It’s one thing to give your movie a title that spells out its theme—in this case, the willful refusal to contend with past horrors, as practiced by Germans of a certain age. It’s quite another, though, to construct the narrative for such a project around a nightclub that’s actually called Amnesia. This is a real place, as it happens—you can find it in Ibiza, where Amnesia is set, and it was founded well before 1990, when most of the film’s action takes place—but that’s no excuse. Schroeder wrote the screenplay with three collaborators, and it’s hard to believe that not one of them thought to say, “Yo ...

Glowing reports from the Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (Ficm) inspired me to fly down to Michoacan in late October for the 13th edition. I was not disappointed. After launching as a shorts festival, gradually director Daniela Michel and her co-founder, Cinepolis CEO Alejandro Ramírez Magaña, have added a Mexican Oscar-qualifying shorts as well as a feature competition section to a wide-ranging international program, as well as a works-in-progress showcase for international buyers, complete with cash awards. Arguably, this festival has done much to bolster Mexican filmmaking by nurturing talent, supporting talented shorts directors through their early features. Slowly but surely Morelia has grown into a world-class festival, drawing a warm community of cinephiles who love to socialize, including a large French contingent led by fest veteran Barbet Schroeder (Cannes entry "Amnesia") and Cannes director general Thierry Frémaux, who...

One of my favorite Cannes film this year was Barbet Schroeder's "Amnesia," which screened Out of Competition. International sales are being handled by Les Films du Losange. U.S. Rights are still available!
The story -
Ibiza, Spanish coast, the early nineties.
Jo (Max Riemelt) is a twenty-five-year-old music composer. He has come over from Berlin and wants to be part of the nascent electronic music revolution, ideally by getting a job first as a DJ in the new nightclub on the island, Amnesia.
Martha (Marthe Keller) has been living alone in her house facing the sea for forty years. One night Jo knocks on her door. Her solitude intrigues him.
They become friends even as the mysteries around her accumulate: that cello in the corner she refuses to play, the German language she refuses to speak. As Jo draws her into his world of techno music, Martha puts everything she had previously lived by into question.
At a family gathering his grandad (Bruno Ganz) tells him once again long familiar war stories of his life as a WW2 German soldier but this time shocking details emerge from his reminiscences that challenge all the Germans present to examine their own recollections and involvement in Germany's past.
This film works on several levels, all of which involve different people's varying recollections and opinions of their common national past.
A love affair develops between an older woman and much younger man who have very different ideas of the relationship. They are both very accomplished musicians, composers who view music quite differently - and wonderful things happen.
Lastly the Germans of all ages here view their country and its history in their lives (and before and after) completely differently.
Shot on the idyllic Spanish eastern coast this film examines profound subjects in a dramatically coherent intelligent way. Bravo Barbet!

Barbet Schroeder returned to the Cannes Film Festival for Amnesia which played on Tuesday in the Special Screenings section. And while the title sounds like it belongs to the suspense genre Schroeder is known for, Amnesia is quite a departure from the morally ambiguous characters the director has painted throughout his career (notably Claus von Bulow in 1990’s Reversal of Fortune, which earned Jeremy Irons an Oscar for his portrayal of the leather-loving socialite)…...

Exclusive: Drama starring Isabelle Huppert due to shoot this June.
Les Films du Losange has taken on sales of Mia Hansen-Løve’s Things to Come (L’Avenir), starring Isabelle Huppert as a woman embarking on a new life after her husband leaves her for another woman.
“We’ll kick off sales at Cannes on the back of the script. The film is due to shoot in Paris in June,” said Les Films du Losange head of sales Agathe Valentin.
Huppert stars as Nathalie, a settled philosophy teacher who has been married for years to Heinz, with whom she has two grown-up children. They stay together out of habit and common intellectual pursuits – he also teaches philosophy — rather than for love.
But one day Heinz announces he has fallen for another woman and moves out. At the same time, Nathalie’s possessive, time-consuming mother passes away. As the summer holidays loom, Nathalie is staring...

The 68th Cannes Film Festival is now little under a month away, and Variety has the skinny on the event’s impressive line-up, which includes Carol and French comedy-drama La Tete Haute – itself set to open the festival on May 13 – not to mention the likes of Pixar’s emotional animation Inside Out and Mad Max: Fury Road screening out of competition.
For a full rundown of those candidates in question, you can consult the list down below. Due to take place from May 13 to May 25, it’s expected that more films will be added to the cinematic selection in the coming days, but already the billing is chock full of eye-catching releases. Interestingly, the aforementioned La Tete Haute will be the first festival opener since 1987 to be directed by a female filmmaker, in this case, Emmanuelle Bercot.

The 2015 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced this morning and it's quite impressive as it includes several titles I'd be rushing to line up for, which makes my not going for the second year in a row all the more frustrating. Titles I'd be most excited to see including the new Jacques Audiard movie Dheepan, the new film from Yorgos Lanthimos The Lobster and Denis Villeneuve's Sicario. Matteo Garrone's The Tale of Tales is obviously an exciting title as are Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, Carol from Todd Haynes and Youth from Paolo Sorrentino. Gus Van Sant will arrive on the Croisette with The Sea of Trees starring Matthew McConaughey, Pixar will arrive with Inside Out, Woody Allen's Irrational Man will screen and we already knew Mad Max: Fury Road would screen. I won't lie, seeing the lineup had me considering looking at the bank...

Well, the official Cannes Film Festival line-up is here, and it's a terrific slate for 2015, with lots of big name, international auteurs, but one you might forget as a familiar face on the Croisette is Barbet Schroeder.
