In case you hadn't heard, the summer 2024 box office has been bad. Really, really, really, ridiculously bad. And when a situation is this bad, you need some bad boys to ride in and fix it -- or die trying. As luck would have it, "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" arrived in theaters this weekend, bringing with it the oxygen mask of an estimated $53 million opening weekend. The fourth movie in the action-comedy series starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence brought in $21.6 million on Friday, including $5.9 million from Thursday previews, which puts it on track to slightly outperform early projections (per The Hollywood Reporter).
That number isn't far behind the $61 million debut of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" during this same weekend a year ago. Under ordinary circumstances, a $53 million opening weekend wouldn't be considered one of the high points of the summer box office, where movies will frequently open north of the $100 million mark.

Prior to 1999, the phrase "sixth sense" typically referred to a keen sense of intuition, often so powerful as to be considered a supernatural power. The definition, however, was broad, and people could be said to have "a sixth sense" about, say, predicting horse races. Since the release of M. Night Shyamalan's 1999 ghost story "The Sixth Sense," however, the phrase now more commonly refers to one's ability to see and communicate with the dead. The film was that popular. At any rate, that's the superpower possessed by the young Cole (Haley Joel Osment), something that causes a great deal of consternation to his psychologist Malcolm (Bruce Willis). How can one treat a child when mutilated ghosts are randomly appearing to him?

Hugo Weaving’s iconic way of speaking has become synonymous with villainous roles, but the actor is no stranger to playing positive characters, with one notable example being Elron Half-elven. Appearing in all three The Lord of the Rings entries, Weaving played the character to perfection and was lauded by fans and critics for bringing the character’s archaic style of speech to life.
But despite garnering critical acclaim for his portrayal of the noble ruler, Weaving had no interest in stepping into Elrond’s shoes ever again, as he isn’t particularly a fan of the character.

M. Night Shyamalan's filmography has been uneven, but the director has always returned with a new hit after a failure, which in itself makes him a unique auteur. On August 9, 2024, the director's next project will be released, titled Trap, which is already fascinating viewers with its trailer alone.
In honor of this, we offer a list of Shyamalan's films to watch and revisit – not including The Sixth Sense, which needs no introduction.

Several couples with their children come on vacation to a paradise island that ordinary people don't know about. The beach turns out to be amazing, but terrible things happen on it: first the tourists find the body of a girl, and then the children suddenly start to grow up by leaps and bounds. Time passes faster on this beach, and it is impossible to get out of here: any attempt to do so results in losing consciousness.

It's a big family year for M. Night Shyamalan. One of his daughters, Ishana Shyamalan, has her first film landing soon (that would be The Watched), and now another child, Saleka is playing a Taylor Swift-alike pop star in the trailer for her father's latest, Trap. Check out the first trailer for that one, which stars Josh Hartnett, below…
Trap finds Shyamalan in darkly funny mode, this time the story of a dad (Hartnett) treating his daughter (Ariel Donoghue) by taking her to a Lady Raven (Saleka) concert.
But there's a twist – and not one that the writer/director is hiding, since it's right there in the trailer: the whole event is designed as a trap for a local serial killer… And the target is most definitely at the concert.

With his latest film “Trap,” filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is letting the audience in on one of his signature twists a little earlier this time around.
In a new trailer for the thriller, which was first shown during the Warner Bros. CinemaCon presentation in early April, star Josh Harnett is first shown as a dad taking his teenage daughter to a pop concert akin to one of the blockbuster tours that dominated summer 2023. Leaving his seat for the bathroom, Hartnett’s character notices a higher-than-normal police presence around the venue and asks a concessions worker if he knows what’s going on.
Turns out, that Lady Raven concert is a sting operation to catch a serial killer on the loose in the city. After thanking the worker for the tip, Hartnett goes into the bathroom stall, pulls out his phone, and opens an app that reveals security footage of a...

Warner Bros. has released the trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s latest mystery thriller “Trap,” starring Josh Hartnett, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills and Marnie McPhail.
According to the official logline, “Trap” follows a “father and teen daughter attending a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.” The film’s first look was screened at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
In the trailer, Hartnett’s character and his daughter, Jody, are at the concert of pop star Lady Raven. When Hartnett runs off to the bathroom, he sees that there is a heavy police presence at the concert and quickly learns they are there to catch a serial killer. The twist is that Hartnett is the killer they are looking for, and it is revealed on his phone that he is holding a victim hostage. The trailer ends with Hartnett maniacally laughing to himself.

A group of people stuck in an isolated location being terrorized by enigmatic and very possibly supernatural forces residing just outside the barriers of their refuge, all of which feels more like a waking dream than events taking place in the real world? "The Watchers" is a Shyamalan joint alright, just not the Shyamalan who gave us thrillers like "Signs," "The Village," and "Knock at the Cabin." This intriguing big-screen take on A. M. Shine's novel of the same name instead comes from writer and director Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night and a first-time feature filmmaker looking to mark a splash after helming multiple episodes of the acclaimed Apple TV+ series "Servant" (which M. Night also worked on as a producer and director) and doing second unit work on some of her pop's pictures since his return to low-budget thrillers around a decade ago, starting with "The Visit.

Chita Rivera, the sultry singer, dancer and actress who commanded the Broadway stage for more than a half-century, has died. She was 91.
Rivera died peacefully in New York on Tuesday, following a brief illness, her daughter, Lisa Mordente, shared in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
Known for her long, sleek legs, smoldering green eyes and lusty singing voice, the two-time Tony Award winner originated some of musical theater’s most iconic characters.
When West Side Story bowed in 1957, it was Rivera singing about life in America as the fiery Puerto Rican transplant Anita. As Rose Grant, the long-suffering girlfriend of songwriter Albert Peterson, Rivera received top billing over Dick Van Dyke in 1960’s Bye Bye Birdie. In 1975, she made the stage sizzle with “All That Jazz” as Velma Kelly in Chicago. And the 1993 musical adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman put her in the spotlight as the sexy Spider Woman.

Vienna-based Autlook has boarded sales on the Danish docu project “Architecture as Invention” in which seasoned doc filmmaker Michael Madsen shares existential and creative conversations with U.S./Polish star architect Daniel Libeskind.
The IDFA Forum Pitch entry is Autlook Film Sales’ third Madsen doc pick-up after his multi-awarded “Into Eternity,” IDFA Green Screen Doc winner in 2010, and Sundance 2015 selected “The Visit.”
“Michael Madsen’s distinguished approach to themes and grand ideas creates films that endure; they are timeless and iconic, always speaking for humanity, much like the architecture of one of the greatest architects of our time, Daniel Libeskind,” said Autlook CEO Salma Abdalla.
A trained architect himself, Madsen has an intimate knowledge of the discipline, explored diversely in his earlier works “Into Eternity,” which delved into the construction of a nuclear waste bunker in Finland, and the 26-minute “Halden Prison,” part of the Wim Wenders-initiated “Cathedrals of Culture.

M. Night Shyamalan's thirty-year-plus career has gone through many highs and lows — from rising to prominence as an innovative auteur to becoming a parody of himself with a string of unsuccessful studio sludge, then experiencing a comeback through the lo-fi horror genre. Whether he's viewed as a critical darling or a critical punching bag, Shyamalan continues to deliver suspenseful stories that delve into the darkest, most emotional corners of the human psyche.
After his masterpiece "The Sixth Sense" thrust him into the spotlight, Shyamalan became synonymous with supernatural thrillers that deliver a gobsmacking twist, turning the world of the film completely upside down. But soon these astonishing final revelations became an expectation that not every film was able to deliver, even becoming ridiculously absurd.

During the making of his Jihlava Film Festival winning film, “Distances” director Matej Bobrik walked right into the middle of an argument.
“Actually, I was standing a bit to the side. It was my cinematographer Filip [Drożdż] who was at the center of it all,” he jokes, recalling heated discussions of his protagonists: a Nepali family who moved to Warsaw in search of a better life.
“It was an intense experience and there were moments when we wondered why they never said ‘stop!’ to us. I think we managed to get so close, because we never forced them to do anything. They knew we were always rooting for them.”
Named as the Best Film from the Central and Eastern Europe of Czech fest’s Opus Bonum section, “Distances” was produced by Agnieszka Skalska for Koi Studio and backed by the Polish Film Institute.

For the majority of the film industry’s existence, movie ratings were more of a vague suggestion rather than a strict guideline. Before films like Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom and Gremlins sparked a parental guidance revolution in the mid 80s, the difference between G and PG could often be something as extreme as gory decapitations or even explicit sex scenes.
And while it’s commonly accepted that the advent of the PG-13 rating resulted in studios attempting to pander to the lowest common denominator (with producers insisting that their box office revenue not be handicapped by an R rating while also not wanting to be associated with “kid” movies), I’d argue that limitations aren’t always a bad thing.
And with Blumhouse’s upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation reminding audiences that you don’t really need traditional blood and guts to be scary, we...

A notoriously huge bomb from one of cinema's biggest stars has curiously found new life on Netflix a full decade after the film initially failed in theaters. The movie in question is 2013's "After Earth," which starred Will Smith and, his son Jaden Smith, and was directed by M. Night Shyamalan, of "The Sixth Sense" and "Split" fame, The results were nothing shy of disastrous for Sony Pictures at the time. And yet, the world of streaming has curiously given the movie new life.
The expensive sci-fi flick recently dropped on Netflix and rapidly made its way into the streamer's top ten daily charts. Stacked amongst all of the pricey, flashy, Netflix original films, a critically-panned flop is being watched more than almost anything else available on the service right now. It's a movie that even Smith, who's had far more successes than failures in his career, acknowledges as a critical misstep.

Last year legendary five-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury received this honor about four months before her death on October 11 at the age of 96. The following living creatives have already received this award so they’re not eligible to be chosen again: Paul Gemignani, Alan Ayckbourn, Athol Fugard, Jane Greenwood, Sheldon Harnick, Marshall W. Mason, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Harold Wheeler, and Graciela Daniele.

Night Shyamalan, known for his infamously thrilling, psychological films released his newest film ‘Knock at the Cabin’ on Friday, February 3rd. The film centers around a family with a young daughter, away on a quiet vacation to a cabin and its surrounding woods. During their stay, they are approached by a group of four strangers to take them into captivity, forcing them to choose between saving the world or saving each other. Although M. Night Shyamalan has had his experience with dark and mystifying films, this may be his most terrifying film yet. It strikes close to home on the theme of family, as well as the looming danger of an apocalypse. Let’s take a look at who M. Night Shyamalan is, what he’s known for, and the cast chosen to represent the crucial roles in this n Night Shyamalan was born in August 1970, in India. He was raised in Penn Valley,...

Knock at the Cabin (2023).The categorical strictures of genre filmmaking have always done a disservice to M. Night Shyamalan. The director’s films are built upwards from otherwise earthbound drama, with their supernatural, comic-book tropes, and general suspense working as auxiliary elements rather than storytelling engines. This “formula”—a term Shyamalan justly bristles at—yields consistently fascinating results, deriving emotional resolve from narrative dissonance. This can be seen in everything from Unbreakable (2000) to The Happening (2008), which eschew conventional climaxes for parting acknowledgements of their characters’ virtues and weaknesses: the former film culminates with Bruce Willis’s technically invincible, reluctant hero, David Dunne, encountering his one debility, water, and is forced to rely on those he was initially saving to then save him, before the villain can be truly apprehended. It’s far from a perfect victory; instead, it’s a sober acceptance of responsibility, with action, violence, superficial excitement all secondary.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt says hell naw to nature thanks to "Backcountry.")
In honor of "Cocaine Bear," let's look back on a mid-2010s wildlife horror film that shows what bears are capable of without drug enhancements. Humans love to connect with nature, pitching tents and roughing it deep within forestation, but we forget we're visitors to occupied territories. Deers might flee in fear, rabbits might scamper away, but bears are better experienced on your movie screens as drug smuggler punishers. Movies like "Backcountry" remind us what makes an animal wild, especially bears who can end some lives with a few paw swipes.
Adam MacDonald does well to represent the foolishness of campers who consider themselves outdoorsy just because they bought some all-weather equipment.

Good ol' M. Night Shyamalan. You can always rely on the mind behind "Signs," "Split," and "Servant" to stir the pot for some reason or another. His latest movie, "Knock at the Cabin," is no exception. Depending on who you ask, Shyamalan's feature is either a chilling, disturbing film anchored by an astonishing Dave Bautista performance or yet another baffling and problematic -- but never boring -- addition to his growing collection of idiosyncratic indie-budget thrillers à la "The Visit" and "Old," if not a little bit of both.
Based on the 2018 novel "The Cabin at the End of the World" by Paul G. Tremblay (who has his own thoughts about Shyamalan's big screen adaptation of his book), "Knock at the Cabin" centers on a family of three -- played by Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, and Kristen Cui -- who are vacationing at a remote cabin in the forest when...

Because “Bioshock” just wasn’t creepy enough, enter: Blumhouse.
The company behind movies “M3GAN,” the new “Halloween” stuff, and “The Purge” is coming for the “horror-themed” video-game market, according to a Tuesday announcement. And it’s got legits: Blumhouse has hired Zach Wood as president of Blumhouse Games and Dan Sechler as CFO. More on them below.
Buried in this morning’s press release was also this nugget: “At the end of last year, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster announced that they were looking to merge. That deal is anticipated to close sometime in the summer.”
Blumhouse Games will partner with independent game developers on original games for console, PC, and mobile platforms. It will focus on indie-budget games (below $10 million), which fits with “the spirit of its film business,” the press release reads.
“For some time we have been looking to build out a team to start accessing the growth opportunity in interactive media.
