With an eye to star, Ethan Hawke has boarded a series adaptation of Angie Kim’s New York Times bestseller Happiness Falls as an executive producer.
Scott Steindorff’s Stone Village Television landed rights following a competitive bidding situation, in a six-figure deal, with Hawke’s Under the Influence Productions then coming aboard. Ryan Hawke, Ethan Hawke, and Mickey Schiff will exec produce for Under the Influence, alongside Dylan Russell, with Maria Breese-McLain, Bill Way and Elliott Whitton producing.
Published by Hogarth, a boutique imprint of Random House, Happiness Falls is a tale of a family in crisis when a father goes missing, forcing them to question everything they thought they knew about him and each other.

Last August, we heard that Imagine Entertainment had picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and now Deadline has a cool update on the project: 20th Century Studios has come out the winner in a bidding war over the Whalefall theatrical distribution rights, and Brian Duffield – who recently worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – has signed on to co-write, direct, and produce the film.
Duffield is working on the screenplay with Kraus, and here’s the story they’ll be bringing to the screen: Jay Gardiner has given himself a fool’s errand – to find the remains of his deceased father in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach. He knows it’s a long shot, but Jay feels it’s the only...

Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple studios bidding, 20th Century Studios has reeled in theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller Whalefall, based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
Aboard to co-write, direct, and produce the film is Brian Duffield, who has a strong relationship with 20th President Steve Asbell and his team, following their work together on the acclaimed sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. Imagine snapped the book up for development in a pre-emptive film rights deal last summer, as we were first to report.
Published last summer by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Whalefall is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The book is about a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. Exclusive: Producer Kate Cohen (Jane Got a Gun) has tapped Oscar nominee Lesley Paterson (All Quiet on the Western Front) and Simon Marshall to script a feature adaptation of Viktor Frankl’s classic treatise, Man’s Search for Meaning. For Paterson’s husband and writing partner, Marshall, the project has taken on particular resonance of late, having just been diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer.
Translated into 50 languages, with over 16 million copies sold, Frankl’s riveting account of his time in the Nazi concentration camps, and his exploration of the human will to find meaning in spite of unspeakable adversity, has offered solace and guidance to generations of readers since it was first published in 1946. At the heart of his work is the conviction that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but rather the pursuit of meaning.

With major new films from Lynne Ramsey, Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Eggers, the year promises a feast for fans
Polaris will be the fifth feature film completed in the 25-year career of the unprolific yet consistently excellent Lynne Ramsay, and her first since 2017. She works with a glacial patience matching the one sentence of information known about her next project: “Set in Alaska during the 1890s, an ice photographer meets the devil.” With real-life couple Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara as the only announced cast, either one could conceivably play either role, and both combinations would be equally tantalizing. But Ramsay is a singular talent, irreplaceable and irreplicable in her fluency with psychological violence and expertly calibrated fusions of brutal realism with stylistic liberation. Her sojourn into the frigid wilds brings her into unfamiliar territory, though the elemental minimalism in those endless expanses of snow and ice fits right...

Brian Duffield is one of the most exciting genre filmmakers working in Hollywood today. His screenplay for the Western "Jane Got a Gun" was a gem that got tarnished by behind-the-scenes chaos. He bounced back with the clever horror romp "The Babysitter," and enjoyed a breakout 2020 with his scripts for "Love and Monsters" and "Underwater," and, most importantly, his directorial debut "Spontaneous." Duffield's adaptation of Aaron Starmer's darkly satiric novel about teenage romance in the age of school shootings hit the bullseye; it was hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure, and, for a movie about kids inexplicably exploding, didn't skimp on the gore. At all. The film went hard because it had to.
Duffield's latest, "No One Will Save You," plays just as rough. The film stars Kaitlyn Dever as a young woman who lives by herself in a roomy rural house, which, one dark night, is broken into...

‘No One Will Save You’ Filmmaker Brian Duffield on the Long Road to His Alien Home Invasion Thriller
No One Will Save You filmmaker Brian Duffield has experienced many twists and turns throughout his 13-year career.
After making the Black List in 2010, he pulled off the same feat in 2011 with his Jane Got a Gun spec script, which went on to endure one of the most dramatic journeys to the big screen in recent memory. In 2013, Duffield was hired to write the dystopian sci-fi film Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent (2014), and that became one of the assignments that helped him realize that he was better suited for writing on spec. In 2014, Duffield made the Black List again for his spec The Babysitter, and his produced spec scripts now include Jane Got a Gun (2015), The Babysitter (2017), Underwater (2020), Love and Monsters (2020) and No One Will Save You (2023).

You’ll recall in 2013, one of the most anticipated movies of what would have been the next year suddenly fell apart, much to the chagrin of cinephiles everywhere. The movie was the Western “Jane Got A Gun” that was supposed to be directed by the great Lynne Ramsay, and it was supposed to star Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Joel Edgerton, and Jude Law.

Woody Harrelson (True Detective) and Owen Wilson (Loki) have signed on to star in the coming-of-age thriller Lips Like Sugar, Deadline reports. Brantley Gutierrez will be making his feature directorial debut on this one after more than a decade of working on short films and music videos.
Scripted by Anthony Tambakis (Warrior), Lips Like Sugar is said to be set during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and is apparently “loosely based on a true story”. It’s also set “against the backdrop of the punk and skate worlds of West Los Angeles.” Here’s the synopsis: As the new friendship of two teenage girls from different walks of life unfolds and city officials focus on the Olympics, the lives of two former detectives (Harrelson and Wilson) become intertwined when one of the young girls goes missing.

Exclusive: As production on his new actioner Den of Thieves 2: Pantera continues, Christian Gudegast has been set to write and direct a new film on mixed martial artist Royce Gracie and the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for frequent partner Tucker Tooley Entertainment.
The Untitled Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Project takes place on the night that Gracie proved Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the most effective fighting style, one that would ultimately become a major component of today’s UFC mixed martial arts. It more specifically chronicles Gracie’s debut in UFC 1 on November 12, 1993, when the fighter achieved the unthinkable during the organization’s inaugural competition. This night that had him besting three competitors is considered to be that on which the UFC was born.

Thanks to an unexpected selection of Oscar nominees for Best Cinematography on Tuesday — particularly, preliminary frontrunner Claudio Miranda missing the cut for “Top Gun: Maverick” — “Elvis” cinematographer Mandy Walker is suddenly the one beat, and now is the likeliest woman yet to break the category’s glass ceiling. She follows Ari Wegner (“The Power of the Dog”) last year and Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound”) in 2018, as only the third woman to be nominated by her branch. But neither Wegner nor Morrison were poised for a win like Walker is.
Who’s the competition? Two other first-time nominees: James Friend for the late-surging German World War I film that once seemed like a long shot — “All Quiet on the Western Front” — and Florian Hoffmeister, the Camerimage winner for the acclaimed “TÁR,” the Best Picture nominee that was snubbed by the ASC. Mandy Walker has become the third woman to be nominated for an Oscar in cinematography, making her way into the final five on the strength of her work on Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.

Newman will play Roz Torrance, with Emmerich as Schneider’s brother Stanley, and Doman as his father Abe.

Lynne Ramsay, whose hallucinatory films often have a genre edge, is making her first official foray into horror with an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1999 cult novel “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.” Ramsay will direct the film from a script she co-wrote with Christy Hall, co-creator of the Netflix series “I Am Not Okay With This.” Production is set to commence sometime next year, with Village Roadshow Pictures backing the project. “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon” carries an impressive horror pedigree, as the producers include Christine Romero, the former wife of the late George A. Romero, and “It” producer Roy Lee of Vertigo Films.
For those who haven’t read King’s chilling novel, here’s the official synopsis from the horror author’s website: “Nine-year-old Trisha McFarland strays from the path while she and her recently divorced mother and brother take a hike along a branch of the Appalachian Trail.

Sobini Films, the production company behind soon-to-released Shields Green biopic Emperor, said it will donate $1 for every digital transaction during the first month of film’s release to the NAACP. Set for a digital release on August 18, via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, the film is based on the inspiring journey of Green, an American freedom fighter who escaped from slavery and joined the raid on Harper’s Ferry, the key battle of the abolitionist movement which helped spark the beginning of the Civil War and alter the course of American history. “All too often vital narratives, such as Emperor, are left out of Hollywood and our history books,” said Robin Harrison, director, NAACP Hollywood Bureau. “The NAACP is inspired by this portrayal of a true American hero and grateful for the opportunity to put the proceeds from the movie to use in our modern-day fight against systemic racism and racial injustice.

Of the many twists thrown at Pretty Little Liars fans over the years, Alison and Emily’s divorce in the show’s short-lived spinoff remains the most polarizing. Actress Sasha Pieterse even admitted that the major turning point for her character remains a “soft spot” during a recent reunion with her Perfectionists co-stars.
Fortunately, Pll showrunner Marlene King has provided a crucial “Emison” update that should put fans’ troubled minds at ease. Responding to a question about the couple on Tuesday night, King tweeted that Emily and Alison are “going strong. They are reunited and loving each other hard. Plus they are great moms,...

While Lynne Ramsay’s next project looks to be an adaptation of a short story by “Handmaid’s Tale” author Margaret Atwood, the Scottish filmmaker is mostly keeping mum about the new film, her first since 2017’s “You Were Never Really Here.” She’s also working on an “environmental horror” movie with elements of a period piece, per an interview with The Hindu published this month.
“I think there’s elements of ancient horror in it with an eye for the environment, but I was being a little bit flippant,” she said about the upcoming project. “You know when people ask sometimes what are you doing, and you say just something to them. But yes, it is an original and a period piece, which is very interesting, and I’m also doing an adaptation of a short story by Margaret Atwood. I can’t really say much about that.”

Any parent hoping to watch a David Lynch movie with the whole family is in luck starting in April. Disney+ has announced Lynch’s 1999 Disney movie “The Straight Story” will be available to stream next month, which is exciting news as the movie has been hard to come by in recent years on streaming. “The Straight Story” is available to purchase on YouTube and Amazon, but Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream the biographical drama as part of their membership staring April 3.
“The Straight Story” is an outlier in Lynch’s challenging and experimental filmography, with the majority of his movies only be suitable for adult viewers. Co-written by John Roach and Mary Sweeney, “The Straight Story” tells the true story of Alvin Straight, who made headlines in 1994 for journeying across Iowa and Wisconsin on a lawn mower. The cast includes Richard Farnsworth, Sissy Spacek, and regular Lynch collaborator Harry Dean Stanton.

Global film and TV executives, including “Elizabeth” producer Alison Owen and “Shakespeare in Love” producer David Parfitt, have spoken out about Harvey Weinstein’s guilty verdict, calling it a “seismic” victory that will bring about immutable change.
Monday’s long-awaited outcome to the U.S. trial, which saw Weinstein convicted of sexual assault and third-degree rape, has been regarded as a landmark victory that will continue to transcend borders and impact women in the international industry.
Monumental Pictures boss Owen, who has produced the likes of “Suffragette” and “Jane Eyre,” worked with Weinstein across five films and, in 2017, broke her silence on his “sleazeball” behavior on set. Owen’s sister-in-law Laura Madden, a former Miramax employee, was one of the first women to go on the record for the New York Times’ ground-breaking investigation into Weinstein.

National Geographic Documentary Films has bought the documentary “Saudi Runaway,” which follows a young woman in Saudi Arabia attempting to flee the country before her arranged marriage.
The deal was announced on Tuesday prior to “Saudi Runaway” screening at the Berlin Film Festival. Directed by Susanne Regina Meures, the movie had its premiere in the World Documentary Competition section at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Meures also wrote the pic and produced it with Christian Frei.
The young Saudi woman used her cell phone to secretly document her claustrophobic existence and her flight to freedom. Working in close collaboration with Meures (whom she spoke with multiple times a day for months), the result is a view inside Saudi Arabia’s patriarchal culture.
“Muna is one of the strongest-willed and most courageous women I know,” Meures said. “Unprecedented, as a Saudi woman, Muna dares to speak up. She shares her...

Universal Pictures announced a one-year partnership with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media at Mount Saint Mary’s University and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering to improve on-screen representation and casting opportunities for the Latinx community.
The program, titled Spellcheck for Bias, is being developed to analyze scripts, manuscripts and advertising briefs to identify representation of characters and percentage of dialogue by gender, race, Lgbtqia and disabilities. It will also analyze characters with several other attributes like violence, discrimination, and intelligence. Universal’s global talent development and inclusion team will work with advisers to develop the criteria to expand Spellcheck’s capabilities to include Latinx representation.
“I’m so thrilled that NBCUniversal has committed to working with us on this pilot program,” Davis said. “Their support will be extremely valuable in developing the tool to address the sparse and underdeveloped portrayals of the Latinx community which our upcoming study underscores.

Filmmaker Alma Har’el has come to Natalie Portman’s defense after the Oscar-winning “Black Swan” actress received backlash for only starring in two feature films directed by women throughout her career, one of which was her feature directorial debut. Portman came under fire after the 2020 Oscars, in which she wore a Dior dress that featured the names of many women filmmakers who were snubbed in the Best Director category in favor of five male filmmakers. Portman’s dress spotlighted Greta Gerwig, Lorene Scafaria, Celine Sciamma, and “Honey Boy” director Har’el herself. Rose McGowan publicly slammed Portman for not practicing what she preaches.
“[This is the] kind of protest that gets rave reviews from the mainstream media for its bravery. Brave? No, not by a long shot,” McGowan wrote on Facebook. “More like an actress acting the part of someone who cares. As so many of them do. I find Portman’s type...

The Boies/Schiller Film Group filed suit on Tuesday, accusing Emmett Furla Oasis of breaching a deal to produce two “Escape Plan” sequels starring Sylvester Stallone.
Boies/Schiller was founded in 2012 by star litigator David Boies and Zack Schiller, the son of Jonathan Schiller — the co-founder of Boies’ law firm. The firm aimed to finance and produce “mid-level wide release films” of the sort that studios had largely turned away from. One of its early deals was to produce “Escape Plan,” the 2013 Emmett Furla Oasis action movie starring Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
According to the suit, Boies/Schiller put up a $6 million loan for the $65 million project. The arrangement also gave Boies/Schiller rights to finance and produce the sequels, “Escape Plan 2: Hades” and “Escape Plan: The Extractors.”
Boies/Schiller alleges that Emmett Furla Oasis breached that agreement, and did not allow Boies/Schiller to put up financing for the sequels.

The gloomy isolation of homemaking females has long been a significant topic across various genres in cinema, depicted in domestic dramas like Chantal Akerman’s “Jeanne Dielman” and in psychodramas like Todd Haynes’ “Safe.” With her debut feature “The Wind,” a psychedelic yet baggy period-horror film, director Emma Tammi assertively carries this female-focused subject matter over to one of the most masculine of genres, the Western, with technical panache yet mixed dramatic results.
A respectable addition to the growing group of female-led Westerns of recent vintage — including “Meek’s Cutoff,” “The Homesman” and “Jane Got a Gun” — Tammi’s supernatural thriller unearths claustrophobic fears amid vast, deserted landscapes and attempts to portray symbolically the multitude of forces, otherworldly and otherwise, that aim to paralyze abandoned women. It’s a compelling package substantiated by dedicated performances and top-notch below-the-line craftwork, yet sadly bogged down by a disorderly narrative structure that works...

Box office returns in Italy suffered their worst result in a decade last year dropping about 5% to €555 million ($631 million), but the market is reacting and 2019 looks set for a turnaround.
Several remedies are considered crucial to getting local audiences back into movie theaters, the main ones being filling the gap in strong releases during summer which has historically been left wide open disrupting regular moviegoing and also causing a glut of titles the rest of the year; upgrading the country’s screens; and providing more really gripping Italian product which in 2018 made up a healthy 22% of total grosses even though no homegrown pics made it into the country’s top ten chart.

Lynne Ramsay On Bouncing Back
In the winter of 2013-14, Lynne Ramsay disappeared to the Greek Island of Santorini to seek refuge after the traumatic experience of having to quit “Jane Got a Gun” right as production began, having concluded the producers would never let her make her version of the film she’d worked on for years.
“I found it quite peaceful and I could get quite focused, perhaps because I thought I was going to make a film and I didn’t and that was really painful,” said Ramsay.

After a six-year hiatus between her acclaimed 2011 Cannes entry “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and its follow-up “You Were Never Really Here” – which has eight nominations at the British Independent Film Awards and and four nominations for the Indie Spirit Awards – Scottish director Lynne Ramsay is planning to return to work “sooner rather than later.” Ramsay, currently serving on James Gray’s jury at the Marrakech Film Festival, looks set to direct her first original script since “Ratcatcher” in 1999.
Speaking to the Bifa website, Ramsay said, “I wrote 160 pages of a script just after doing all the press for ‘You Were Never Really Here,’ because it’s hard to keep talking about the same films. But I was really inspired by making [that] film, so I’ve started writing this epic environmental horror thing. I don’t know what it is yet, I just kept writing and didn’t look back.

It’s been over half a century since gun-slinging, hi-de-ho westerns dominated the box office, when names like John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Clint Eastwood rolled off the tongue. In 2018, tumbleweeds slowly crawling across a deserted street are few and far between. Don’t get it twisted, though, westerns are no where near extinct. Some of your favorite stars have been recently seen polishing their revolvers in hot pursuit of money, power and revenge, including in this weekend’s “Ballad of Buster Scuggs” and next month’s “The Sisters Brothers.”
