The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers for this weekend;. adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

The Blue Angels happens to be a pretty cool title for a movie title. You are not at fault if you expect it to be some sort of thrilling thing. Well, “Blue Angels” is what the United States Navy flight demonstration squadron is popularly known as. In popular culture, it is, of course, the Top Gun films that have introduced us to them. Interestingly, Glen Powell, who rose to fame thanks to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), is one of the producers of the latest The Blue Angels movie. Powell also starred in another Blue Angels-inspired movie, Devotion (2023), following his Top Gun success. The Blue Angels is a documentary, though, about the real thing. Now I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but The Blue Angels turns out to be somewhat underwhelming—just saying.

Since accompanying Tom Cruise in his aviation ventures in Top Gun: Maverick, the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career, Glen Powell has garnered wider recognition following his acting prowess. Moreover, the actor once again made headlines after jumping onto the rom-com landscape with Sydney Sweeney in Anyone but You, the kind of film that is a rarity these days.
But after the rom-com, the actor is back to what he loves doing the most, aviation, and he has the Mission: Impossible star’s influence to thank for it.

Val Kilmer was almost a lead in one of the cult classics of David Lynch. The Top Gun actor could be a massive name early in his career if he accepted Lynch’s 1986 mystery-thriller Blue Velvet.
Val Kilmer has been cast in several commercially and critically successful films throughout his career. He has also garnered attention from pop culture enthusiasts for his role as the Dark Knight in Batman Forever. However, the Iceman fame has also lost some iconic roles that could have elevated his career.

It is not new for stars to miss out on some great films due to tough decisions. Val Kilmer admitted that he had to reject Blue Velvet as he was uncomfortable doing such an explicit film.
Why did Val Kilmer say no to David Lynch’s Blue Velvet?
David Lynch is known for his distinct style of surrealistic filmmaking.

Over the last three decades, Keanu Reeves has cemented himself as one of the leading men in Hollywood when it comes to action. From making The Matrix with The Wachowskis to performing most of his stunts in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick films, Reeves has deservedly earned himself the status of one of the best action stars of our time.
But while it was Point Break and Sandra Bullock’s Speed that gave him the boost in the action landscape, these films weren’t Reeves’ first introduction to the genre.

Glen Powell is sharing why he worried he ruined 2016’s Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures.
The actor, who portrayed astronaut John Glenn in the movie, made a recent appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast where he recalled his first time watching a rough cut of the historical drama.
“It does get in your own head,” Powell explained. “People forget that when you’re watching a rough cut of a movie, it’s probably like watching the footage of yourself that you’re having to edit. So you sit there and you’re like, ‘I hate myself.’”
He continued, “I remember watching [Hidden Figures] for the first time on the Fox lot — and this was before all the effects were done, the music was in [and] the sound design — and I literally left the movie, and I puked in the bushes.”

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan films (like Police Story), with...

Saturday Am: This weekend at the Memorial Day box office, the film industry seems to be questioning its existence, ready to jump out of a window. How can a genius, George Miller-directed tentpole prequel to the multi-Oscar winning Mad Max: Fury Road with great reviews and 4 1/2 stars PostTrak exits not be working?
The entire theatrical business is destined for streaming, oh, no! People will forever stay on their couches!
As Cher said to Nicolas Cage in Moonstruck as she smacked him in the face: “Snap out of it!” It’s not really right to make Furiosa, or Garfield, for that matter, the proxies of the Memorial Day box office.
Furiosa is still on track for $31M-$33M. For clarity purposes: The last time a film grossed in this vicinity was the 1980s with Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. However, we stand corrected: It’s the lowest No.

It’s a bit of a wasteland out there for theaters this summer, as Memorial Day weekend is closing out a very underwhelming May on a down note. Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is projected to open well short of the industry’s prior estimates for a $40 million-plus bow over the four-day window. The high-budget action epic is practically neck-and-neck for first place over Sony’s animated adaptation “The Garfield Movie” on domestic charts.
The fireball “Mad Max” prequel sputtered to $10.2 million from 3,804 locations across Friday and preview screenings. It’s got Imax and other premium large-format auditoriums to bolster its ticket sales, too. It’s another tough underperformance this summer. The film’s 2015 predecessor “Mad Max: Fury Road” got to $16 million in its opening day. That movie also put together an impressive awards season run and got canonized by action genre fans. Even so, “Furiosa” seems unable...

Netflix has tied up a deal in the $34M range for the John Lee Hancock-directed package Monsanto, we can reveal. The pic will star Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.
CAA Media Finance cut the presale after launching with Rocket Science last week. Netflix has been quieter at recent markets but is back at the table with the splashy deal.
This and Apple’s WW deal for Everest sherpa pic Tenzing are the two biggest deals to emerge from the Cannes market so far. The latter is understood to be in the $40M range.
Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell), who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part...

When it comes to undisputed box office superstardom, it is difficult to look past Tom Cruise. The charismatic actor has proved his impact in Hollywood time and again through iconic blockbusters that have cemented his place as one of the most influential celebrities in the industry.

With Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise went on to create history not just through the film’s record breaking collections, but also reportedly earned a jaw-dropping $100 million plus for his iconic role. While this is a staggering achievement that’s hard to beat, the ball was set rolling 5 decades ago by the legendary Marlon Brando who became the first male actor to take home $1 million for a single film.
Tom Cruise May Hold This Record But Marlon Brando Pioneered It
When it comes to blockbusters, networth, and whopping paychecks, Tom Cruise is at the top of the celebrity list.

Glen Powell may be the next ’80s-style movie star, but the actor admitted to recently turning down one of his childhood dream roles in an iconic franchise: “Jurassic Park.”
Powell told The Hollywood Reporter that he opted to not star in the latest franchise reboot for Universal, tentatively titled “Jurassic City.” Scarlett Johansson is leading the feature, with Jonathan Bailey co-starring. Gareth Edwards is directing and the reboot is slated for a July 2, 2025 release.
“‘Jurassic’ is one of my favorite movies. It’s one of the things I’ve wanted to do my whole life,” Powell said. “I’m not doing that movie because I read the script and I immediately was like, my presence in this movie doesn’t help it. And the script’s great. The movie’s going to fucking kill. It’s not about that. It’s about choosing where you’re going to make an...

Thanks to his standout role as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick and the success of his recent romcom Anyone But You, Glen Powell is well on his way to becoming one of the most highly in-demand actors in Hollywood.
When any actor starts to make waves, it almost seems inevitable that the superhero movie offers will start coming in, and Powell has emerged as a fan-favorite pick to play Cyclops in Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men reboot.
Despite (made up) rumors to the contrary, Powell hasn't actually met with Kevin Feige about potentially playing Scott Summers, but even if the opportunity were to present itself down the line, it doesn't sound like the Twisters star would have much interest.

Glen Powell is a household name these days, thanks to the box office success of Top Gun: Maverick and the romantic comedy Anyone but You. Twisters is one of his upcoming films that will be released this summer. That being said, the actor, 35, appears to be part of every new project that is being announced daily.
Well, that does not imply, however, that the actor is accepting every offer. He has actually already passed up two enormous opportunities. Recently, Powell spoke with THR about his career to date, as well as his decisions for the future.

It seems, surprisingly, that he has already made a few big choices about future endeavors. In his interview, he did not specifically say that he would not play a superhero role in a movie. But rather than quoting directly, the article’s author suggested his selective casting process.

We don’t know very much about The Gorge, the latest film from Sinister, The Black Phone, and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. Announced a year and a half ago, it’s an Apple Original Film coming our way from Skydance Productions and has Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick) in the lead roles – and it has just earned a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board for intense sequences of violence and action, brief strong language, some suggestive material and thematic elements.
Taylor-Joy recently told the folks at Collider that she was drawn to The Gorge because “I was really excited to work with Miles [Teller]. We’re all good friends, but we’ve been wanting to work together for a really long time. I think I was intrigued by the fact that it was semi genre-less in the sense that it was both a...

Glen Powell Reveals Why He “Ran Away” from Hollywood and Why He Turned Down the New ‘Jurassic’ Movie
He is 35 years old and he comes from Austin, TX. He is an actor and you’ve probably seen him in Top Gun: Maverick, but don’t remember him as he was not Tom Cruise. Since then, his career has been on an upward spiral, and he has had some very successful projects. His name is Glen Powell and the actor has finally managed to “conquer Hollywood” at the age of 35, which is also when he decided to retreat a bit and go back to his roots. Okay, he’s not quitting, and he has many plans for the future, but the Texan has decided to take a different approach to fame.
In a major interview for The Hollywood Reporter, Powell discussed his career, his internal struggles, as well as his future plans, revealing that while we won’t be seeing him, we will still be seeing him everywhere at the same time.

Glen Powell has been attached to star in Paramount’s reimagining of Heaven Can Wait. More on the project below.
Glen Powell truly is the man of the moment. He’s only just coming off the unexpected success of Sony’s Anyone But You and about to headline the summer’s windiest blockbuster Twisters, but he’s now eyeing up a body-switch comedy.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Powell will star in Paramount’s reimagining of Heaven Can Wait, based on Harry Segall’s play of the same name. The play was most famously adapted in 1978 and starred Warren Beatty as an NFL football player who suffers an unfortunate, untimely death but returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire.
Warren Beatty also directed the film, which received nine Oscar nominations, winning Best Art Direction as it was called at the time. Segall’s play has also...

Glen Powell arrives at lunch through a back door toting a container of bone broth he isn’t eager to look at, much less consume. He’s more a “chicken-fried-steak-in-Austin kind of a guy,” he insists, but he’s signed on to star in an A24 revenge thriller and he’s supposed to drop 15 pounds in a matter of weeks. It means he won’t be ordering the midday margarita that Ron Perlman is nursing at the next table. Reluctantly, Powell requests a green juice.
“I’ve almost given up on this diet, like, three times,” he says, flashing a familiar smile. “I’m like, ‘Can’t we just change the character?’ “
Glen Powell was photographed March 26 at the Harvard House Motel in Los Angeles.
But Powell’s not one to give up on anything, so he hands over the broth. The restaurant’s going to store it for him,...

It’s taken a while for Glen Powell to truly step into the spotlight. After popping up in the likes of Hidden Figures, Set It Up and Everybody Wants Some!! (the last his first collaboration with Richard Linklater), it was 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick that saw him really take flight, giving an unforgettably hissable-yet-heroic performance as Lt Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin. Major turns have come since — box-office-busting romcom Anyone But You and another aviation adventure, Devotion — but it is with Hit Man that Powell announces himself as a movie star and a filmmaking force to be reckoned with.
Inspired by the true story of teacher-turned-pretend-assassin Gary Johnson (as reported by journalist Skip Hollandsworth in a 2001 article for Texas Monthly), Hit Man sees Powell re-team with Linklater, this time on a deeper creative level as co-writer. It takes the real-life nugget of Gary’s unusual side-hustle and expands it into a tale of murder,...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
A big problem with recommending anime is that, from the outside in, they can all seem rather similar. The biggest animes ever tend to all be battle shonen shows from a single manga magazine — just look at Michael B. Jordan's list of favorite anime — much like how superhero movies dominate Hollywood. Of course, there is more to the medium than that, as this column often shows, from the thought-provoking and bleak sci-fi mystery "Pluto," to the Coen brothers-like oddities of "OddTaxi." Still, when it comes to mainstream action shows, they all tend to follow teens, like Deku, Goku, Yuji, Tanjiro, and Eren.

Hot on a role right now, Glen Powell is set for a reimaging of ‘Heaven Can Wait’ which is in early development at Paramount Pictures.
Based on Harry Segall’s play of the same name, the story made its way to the big screen back in 1978 and starred Warren Beatty. It focused on Beatty’s NFL quarterback who dies prematurely due to an antsy angel and returns to Earth in the body of a recently murdered millionaire. Beatty also co-directed the film with Buck Henry and co-wrote the script with Elaine May.
Also in news – Steve Carrell set for HBO untitled comedy series
Oscar winner Stephan Gaghan is set to pen the latest iteration of the story. Powell and Gaghan’s upcoming project is reportedly not a remake and will not centre around a football player as the main character. However, it will retain the concept of a man being taken away before his time.

Glen Powell may be one of Hollywood’s most promising actors after starring in last year’s trending romcom Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney, but his career was launched way before his most famous flick came around.

Tom Cruise famously saved the theaters from the pandemic’s devastating effect in 2022 with his iconic Top Gun: Maverick, making history yet another time. Today, there is no pandemic, and the theaters don’t need saving, but it looks like Brad Pitt is eager to repeat Cruise’s journey, regardless — except this time, down on the ground.
Brad Pitt is going full speed into his new biggest action movie, and so far, it’s looking pretty hot.
Brad Pitt’s Maverick Is an F1 Driver
Top Gun: Maverick was just notoriously brilliant and successful, so the logical conclusion would be to grab another huge A-lister and throw him into the action with the same production team to replicate Cruise’s success. There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.
With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. More big movies give people more reasons to attend. Unfortunately, both titles are not Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M all-time Memorial Day opening record) nor is it last year’s The Little Mermaid stateside start ($118.8M) in their mass appeal.
Furiosa is both a reboot of the Mad Max franchise and a prequel as Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the one armed action of Charlize Theron, who fans of the George Miller franchise are still rabid about when its comes to the desert vigilante’s big screen portrayal. After a...

“Twisters,” set to be released July 19 and one of IndieWire’s most anticipated movies of summer 2024, arrives a whopping 28 years after the original “Twister” landed in theaters. That was the perfect amount of time for a whole fandom to spring up around the 1996 movie, with devotees obsessed with its scrappy stormchasers in it for the science, all vying with evil meteorologists only in it for the money (because meteorology is such a lucrative field!), its windblown CGI cattle, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton’s make-the-most-of-it line readings, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his best early roles.
Glen Powell, the star of “Twisters,” alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, shares that fandom. During a recent interview with Powell, this writer mentioned how much I love the original film and how unique it is as a “comedy of remarriage.” It’s the specific type of screwball comedy that’s about a separated couple...

In the days leading up to the opening night, Sous les écrans la dèche, a collective of festival workers, announced it would be striking over salary increases and unemployment benefits; as I type, the strikes haven’t materialized, nor has the rumored list of new sexual abuse allegations about men in the French film industry. “Last year, as you know, we had some polemics,” artistic director Thierry Frémaux told the press on the eve of the fest, hinting at the decision to open the 2023 edition with Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, a film that would have been forgotten a lot faster than it was had it...

Following the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick, the filmmakers are now moving ahead with a third installment in the franchise Top Gun 3. As excitement mounts for Top Gun 3, there are certain factors that could pose challenges for the filmmakers, particularly regarding one of the supporting actors, Powell, who has experienced considerable career growth with his subsequent films.
Glen Powell Has Seen A Significant Surge Following Top Gun: Maverick
Glen Powell initially sought to play one of the leading roles in Top Gun: Maverick. While he was disappointed with losing the role of Rooster to Miles Teller, he still made a noticeable presence in the film as Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin.

Glen Powell is swiftly heading to the top of the list of Hollywood’s hottest hotshots with his projects like Anyone but You, and his upcoming presumed smash hits like Hit Man and Twisters are already paving the way for more fame for him. That said, besides these two, he has a further recently released project: The Blue Angels.

Needless to say, even the preview trailer of this documentary is enough to let fans know that it is nothing short of a masterpiece. But still, to promote it, Powell has an epic trick up his sleeve that could perfectly boost the documentary’s viewership chances. And this trick has something to do with how he and Sydney Sweeney boosted their sleeper hit together from December last year.
