"Teen Titans Go!" is a bit of a controversial cartoon among fans, as it is a much more comedic, kid-friendly version of the 2003 "Teen Titans" cartoon (which was darker and more anime-inspired). Some fans see "Teen Titans Go!" as representative of the uber-commercialization of art, a cash-grab of a show with none of the heart of the original. Of course, to think that would be to ignore one of the most subversive, hilarious, and most of all, bizarre superhero animated shows to date.
Then there's the movie, which gave us some of the best moments in a DC film (like Robin enthusiastically pushing Thomas and Martha Wayne into Crime Alley so Batman can exist), but also the TV show itself which stands alongside "Regular Show" and "Flapjack" as often breaking Cartoon Network's "no weird" rule. There are episodes where Robin teaches the Titans about equity, pyramid schemes, and even the IRS.

After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

"Merry Little Batman" is the latest Warner Bros. Animation movie, part of the wave of DC animated titles that Warner Bros. Discovery stupidly gave away under David Zaslav's regime.
The film follows Damian Wayne as he is forced to defend his home, and eventually all of Gotham, from supervillains while Batman is away one Christmas Eve. It is part Batman movie, part "Home Alone," part "The Grinch", and full Caped Crusader bliss. "Merry Little Batman" features a distinct and unique visual style that is reminiscent of Tim Burton's animated productions, with director Mike Roth ("Regular Show") giving the film an illustrative look inspired by Ronald Searle.
Arguably, the standout element is, well, Batman. Though the focus is definitely on Damian's story, this is a Batman unlike any we've seen in TV or film. This is a Batman without the growl. Instead, this Batman is a goof.

Prime Video is expanding its Batman universe with not one but two more projects.
After saving ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ from HBO’s chopping block in March, Prime Video has announced that it will be adding the family-friendly movie ‘Merry Little Batman’ as well as the series spinoff ‘Bat-Family’ to its library. Both projects come from Warner Bros. Animation and DC.
Whereas “Batman: Caped Crusader” is a reimagining of Batman’s mythology in the same vein as “Batman: The Animated Series,” “Merry Little Batman” will be more of a comedic take on this superhero. When big Batman’s son Damian Wayne finds himself alone in Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve, he has to defend his home and Gotham City as “Little Batman” before the holiday is ruined. Mike Roth, known for his work on “Regular Show,” will direct and executive produce alongside Sam Register. The screenplay comes from Morgan Evans (“Teen Titans Go!...

Back in June 2022, fans of “Inside Job” were thrilled when Netflix announced it was ordering more episodes of the adult-oriented animated comedy created by “Gravity Falls”/”Regular Show” writer Shion Takeuchi.
The series follows the exploits of Reagan Ridley and her cohorts at Cognito Inc., the deep-state, top-secret organization that operates as a shadow government, responsible for all the world’s conspiracy theories.
Fast-forward to January 2023, with those same fans shocked and angered by Netflix’s subsequent announcement that it was axing plans for a second season, and was instead cancelling the show.

It's impossible to deny that Mark Hamill as "Star Wars" hero Luke Skywalker is one of the most iconic performances in all of pop culture. Even amidst the franchise's most divisive era, Hamill's star power alone unites most of the fandom in love and admiration. However, to purely define the actor's abilities by his time in a galaxy far, far away would undermine an over 50-year career spanning countless genres, mediums, styles, and franchises.
Hamill began his career as a television actor, guest-starring on numerous shows throughout the '70s, and even playing a recurring role on the well-known soap opera "General Hospital." He also began what would become a storied career in voice acting, lending his talents to two Hanna Barbara productions. Though things would explode following the premiere of "Star Wars" in 1977, Hamill continued to expand his resume with projects ranging from superhero cartoons to war dramas to even horror anthologies.

How do you be an artist in these trying times? Some of the year's best animated TV shows and movies asked this question, and it's not hard to figure out why. In 2022, animators continued fighting for respect from an industry that doesn't often love them back. Animation helped keep the entertainment industry afloat during the worst of the pandemic, and the people who bring these creations to life deserve more than seeing their projects canceled prematurely, having their work scrubbed from streaming services, and inadequate wages.
After all, while it can be crass, bloody, or just too intense for younger viewers, animation can also provide a break from a stressful world — sometimes simply by reflecting back exaggerated versions of our adult concerns. Some of the best animated productions of 2022 explored identity crises, the difficulty of letting go, the struggle to make art, and the absurdities of everyday living. Here are our favorites.

Recently, there have been loads of headlines about all the shows and movies being pulled from HBO Max. When HBO Max launched in 2020, it promised a robust library of content from the Warner Bros. vault to entice subscribers to become early adopters. One of the big sells was the release of the 4-hour cut of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Fans had been craving that version of the movie since the theatrical made its way to the big screen. Since the studio had so much content to choose from over its nearly one-hundred-year history, it could easily offer subscribers a lot of content to choose from for one low price.
It seemed to work. HBO Max took off really well once it debuted. Fans flocked to the service for its original content. Comics fans waited for the new cut of Justice League but could sustain themselves on original...

Incognito Inc. and the Deep State will keep chugging along in a first-look clip for new episodes of Netflix’s “Inside Job,” which has added Adam Scott as a key member of the Illuminati, Reagan’s (Lizzy Caplan) main competition on her path to world domination. The eight-part “Inside Job” Part 2 will premiere on the streamer Nov. 18.

In recent weeks, HBO Max has both publicly and quietly removed dozens of series from its platform. These shows are the latest targets of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s cuts which aim to deliver on his promise to Wall Street that he will find 3 billion in cost savings. So what’s the impact of these cuts on HBO Max’s value to subscribers?
At a high level, removing these series will shave 2.1 off what the total demand for HBO Max’s catalog was in July. With only a 2.1 hit to the total demand for HBO Max’s catalog, its relative standing among competitors will not shift — still well behind the tight Hulu/Netflix race but ahead of Amazon Prime Video by a healthy enough margin.

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson have broken up after nine Instagram-perfect months together – or so E! News sources say – and social media had a field day Friday making pretty much the same joke about Kanye West rushing to his ex-wife’s side faster than you can say “Ye.”
According to E!, the lovebirds have decided to just be friends because of their busy schedules and Kardashian being a West coaster and Davidson an East coast kinda guy “made it really difficult to maintain a relationship.” Davidson has spent a large chunk of the summer in Australia filming “Wizards!” while Kardashian has remained in Los Angeles, raising her four children with West.
Reps for Kardashian and Davidson didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
But don’t rush to assume the Pete-Kim breakup means she’s getting back together with Yeezy. “The divorce is moving ahead with Kanye,” another insider shares with E!

Last Year’s Winner: “Rick and Morty”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: The Best Animated Program category hasn’t seen a repeat winner since the category was divided into “One Hour or Less” and “More Than One Hour” divisions, and “South Park” took home the latter prize in 2008 (for its “Imaginationland” episodes) and the former in 2009 (for “Margaritaville”). That being said, “Rick and Morty” has won both times it was nominated (in 2018 and 2020), so one could argue it’s a dominant force whenever it’s eligible.
Fun Fact: “The Simpsons” and “South Park” are the only two programs to win more than two trophies in this category. The iconic Fox series has 11 wins (most recently in 2019) while Comedy Central’s landmark program has five wins (with the last coming in 2013). With one more win, still-active shows like “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty” could become the third to join these elite ranks.

Cartoon Network Studios debuted a new iteration of its animated shorts program, Cartoon Cartoons, its first dedicated shorts initiative in over a decade that will look to showcase diverse stories, discover new creative voices and mentor the next generation of animators.
The program’s predecessor, an animated incubator, began in 1995 as World Premiere Toons, and the initiative has over the years launched popular, award-winning series such as Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Dexter’s Laboratory,” Craig McCracken’s “The Powerpuff Girls,” C.H. Greenblatt’s “Chowder,” J.G. Quintel’s “Regular Show” and Rebecca Sugar’s “Steven Universe.”
“Cartoon Network Studios has a proud legacy of animated shorts,” said Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register. “We are building on that legacy today with a program that will champion new and diverse voices, energize creativity and provide resources for artists to share their stories with the world. Photo: ‘Infinity Train’/HBO Max Upon first glance it would be easy to describe the Cartoon Network/HBO Max animated sci-fi/fantasy anthology series ‘Infinity Train’ as a kid-friendly version of ‘Snowpiercer’, but to do that would do the series a disservice. In fact, it’s the best kind of show aimed at children: it boasts a great premise, a compelling world and characters, and smart writing. And most importantly it doesn’t talk down to its audience: creator Owen Dennis, previously a writer and storyboard artist on Cartoon Network’s ‘Regular Show’, gives us something that isn’t afraid to tackle some emotional and even dark themes for a kids’ show. But a quick search on the internet indicates that despite its quality, the show was in danger of being cancelled up until recently when it was renewed for another season. It’s a reminder of just how precarious...

This Valentine’s Day, Fox is expanding its Animation Domination Sunday block with a show that immediately seems familiar enough to qualify as comfort TV from its very opening minutes.
“The Great North” follows a family of lovable, scrappy weirdos — headed up by gruff but sweet dad Beef (Nick Offerman) — who stumble into strange adventures so often that every episode is called some variation of the “[X Event] Adventure”. Even when they clash, the Tobins are fiercely loyal to each other above all else. So while the Tobins may live in the wilds of Alaska, they’re very close spiritual cousins to the characters of Fox’s sweetest cornerstone comedy “Bob’s Burgers,” which makes sense given how much overlap there is between the two series. Not only is “The Great North” also animated by the Bento Box studio, but it’s co-created by “Bob’s Burgers” mainstays Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin,...

Guadalajara, Mexico — In the world, it would be hard to choose a more exciting figure to introduce a masterclass than Guillermo del Toro, and even more so when that talk is given in the filmmaker’s hometown of Guadalajara Mexico at a festival he has been involved with for its entire 33-year existence.
If the audience was excited when Del Toro emerged from the wings to introduce guest speaker Melissa Cobb, Netflix vice president, kids & family, they were absolutely buzzing when he sat across from her to moderate the hour-and-a-half long talk.
Del Toro’s “Tales of Arcadia” animated series trilogy is produced at Netflix, as is his upcoming stop-motion feature and passion project “Pinocchio.” The assembled crowd was even treated to a first look at some photos from the project.

Every year, the festival wing, appropriately titled El Festival, of Mexico’s Pixelatl – an association dedicated to the creation and promotion of multimedia content – takes center stage as Mexico’s premier event linking students and professionals in animation, comics and video games to the international marketplace. Held over five days in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, about an hour from Mexico City, awards were handed out over the weekend.
Pixar’s Lee Unkrich was awarded the Chinelo in Animation, a career achievement award which last year went to Oscar-nominated stop-motion director Henry Selick, responsible for “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Coraline,” and in 2015 was given to special effects pioneer Phil Tippet, who scored Oscars for both “Jurassic Park” and “Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.”
The top prize for a series went to Edino Ferrera’s “Curtis & Bean” a Mexico-Argentina co-production geared towards kids between six and nine years old.

In certain ways, the May 2 CalArts Character Animation Producers’ Show resembled any number of other year-end showcases of undergrad work held by art schools nationwide. Students gathered to cheer on their classmates, as 22 student-created animation shorts were screened, with four of them winning special awards. Alumni and faculty mingled in the aisles, using the event as a de facto reunion.
Of course, most other schools’ programs do not fill up the DGA Theater in Hollywood, and most mingling alumni do not include the likes of Pixar’s Pete Docter catching up with students and offering notes afterward. And it was hard to miss the entire rows roped off for representatives of every major player in animation: Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, DreamWorks, Netflix, Bento Box …. Begun in the 1980s, and slowly expanding in stature starting in the mid-’90s, CalArts’ showcase has evolved into something resembling a friendlier version of an NFL combine,...

When Uncle Grandpa accidentally flips the multidimensional switch on his Rv, he creates a tear in the universe that collides the worlds of some of Cartoon Network’s most beloved shows… That’s the set up for Cartoon Network Battle Crashers, the side-scrolling, kid-friendly beat ‘em-up from GameMill/Maximum Games – which has, a year on from its initial release, made it’s Nintendo Switch debut.

The cult series “Samurai Jack” returns after a nearly 13-year absence with a final story that’s darker, bloodier, and more intense.
That explains why “Jack” has moved from Cartoon Network to Adult Swim as its 10-episode Season 5 premieres this Saturday. The series picks up 50 years later, but the eponymous hero (now sporting a flowing beard and armor and driving a motorcycle) hasn’t aged as a result of being hurled into the dystopian future.
As Jack journeys home, he’s lost in a psychological purgatory and losing his mind. He’s haunted by memories of the past and filled with guilt about abandoning his family. He even has ego-crushing,”Birdman”-like dialogues with himself.
That’s not to suggest that the series has lost its humor. For creator Genndy Tartakovsky, “Jack” continues to incorporate a Hanna-Barbera (where he began his career) influence.
