If there’s one thing that 2020 taught us, it’s that nothing is ever set in stone, especially release dates. With the global box office in upheaval — really, with the entire globe in upheaval — a year that seemed otherwise poised to give us yet another steady stream of blockbusters was instead hit hard by lockdowns, closed theaters, and plenty of delayed release dates. The pandemic and its considerable ripple effect also derailed what was going to be a particularly thrilling year for female filmmakers, just as they were starting to truly break through on the studio side, though a new look at the year in review finds that 2020 still held plenty of reason for Hollywood’s women to celebrate.
It’s still unclear how (or even if) 2021 will provide a bounceback for the box office and its rising women talents. But there are some positive indicators. As we head into a new era,...

Following Variety‘s exclusive report in December, Apple is officially announcing its multi-year content partnership with David Ellison’s Skydance Animation.
The agreement, which includes the previously announced feature films “Luck” and “Spellbound,” will also include what Apple billed as “first-ever theatrical-quality animated television series” for Apple TV Plus subscribers.
Skydance Animation is a division of Ellison’s Skydance Media, which is run by John Lasseter and president Holly Edwards. The deal reunites Lasseter with the Cupertino giant decades after he founded Pixar with the late Steve Jobs.
The first series up is “The Search for WondLa,” which scored a two-season order to start, based on the beloved book series by Tony Diterlizzi. The Apple original will be written and executive produced by showrunner Lauren Montgomery, with Chad Quant, Diterlizzi, and Gotham Group also serving as executive producers. Several other titles are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Amazon Studios has swept in and is poised to land “The Tomorrow War,” a science-fiction action film with Chris Pratt that Skydance developed and produced. The price for the film is rumored to be roughly $200 million, but insiders stress the sale has not been finalized and financial terms have yet to be determined.
The film was being shopped to streamers and drew interest from companies due in part to its star power. Every major service, including Netflix and Apple, viewed the movie. Several were impressed by the film and thought it had commercial potential.
Amazon has been aggressive in landing splashy content, buying the likes of “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Coming 2 America,” and the Michael B. Emma Thompson was characteristically frank about Hollywood’s double standard during a recent interview with the CultureBlast podcast. The “Nanny McPhee” star, who is also a prolific screenwriter, was talking about her upcoming film “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” which she said is a refreshing change of pace from the the typical Hollywood film about women who have romances with men decades older than themselves.
Directed by Sophie Hyde, “Leo Grande” is the story of a widow whose late husband had been an unsatisfying lover, so she decides to seek out a sex therapist in his early 20s.
Thompson’s character in the film says, “The only people willing to sleep with me are my age and I want to sleep with someone younger than me.” But it’s very rare for women to express that desire for a younger man onscreen, she says. “If I have someone playing...

Apple has been in prolonged conversations to acquire two John Lasseter-produced titles from Skydance Animation, “Luck” and “Spellbound,” multiple insiders with knowledge of the discussions told Variety.
The two films would anchor what sources called a larger agreement between David Ellison’s animation division and the streamer, which has yet to be reached. WME is also said to be involved in the negotiations, which also includes a theatrical release component.
The films had been set up at Paramount Pictures, where Skydance enjoys a lucrative partnership on the “Mission: Impossible” franchise and the upcoming “Top Gun” sequel. Skydance has a contractual right to move the projects at will, another source added.
Skydance, Paramount Pictures, and Apple declined to comment.
The handful of executives who screened footage of “Luck” called it “vintage Lasseter,” citing the dazzling production value and commercial appeal the producer is known for, said insiders.

Until until now, George Clooney’s efforts as a director have stayed firmly planted on Earth, with the stories that attract him being either inspired by true events or tapped directly into the zeitgeist (The Ides of March). With The Midnight Sky, Clooney not only expands his horizons as a filmmaker, literally, but he also takes a giant leap into the speculative. In the process, he’s made a film that doesn’t always hang together, yet it ends up as possibly his most moving feature to date.
To be sure, Clooney’s track record as a director is also significantly uneven: the two films mentioned above are easily the best of the seven he’s helmed. Others, such as The Monuments Men and the almost unwatchable Suburbicon, have been muddled and unfocused affairs. The Midnight Sky falls in the middle of the pack. As an actor, George Clooney serves up self-deprecation and charm; as a filmmaker, the same impulses come across as bitter and ironic convictions. That’s certainly the case in “The Midnight Sky,” a gorgeous take on the apocalypse that doesn’t try to reinvent the formula because, well, you know how these things go. Clooney directs and stars in this ambitious adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s 2016 novel, and there’s much to appreciate about his by-the-book approach: Despite the blockbuster budget, he’s crafted , laced together with mournful gazes at the icy tundra and the sad revolutions of spacecraft en route to its dying home.
As it slips between these lyrical settings, Clooney conjures both the cosmic awe of “Gravity” and the eerie isolation of “The Thing,” an admirable set of traditions that lend an imitative feel for much of the movie. Yet for the actor-filmmaker, this somber, effects-driven tone...

Failure, competition and the pressure of staying relevant perennially looms on actors in Bollywood. Some can cope with it and some cannot. Those who cannot, often quit and opt for a different path in another fields.
