Madrid-based Begin Again Films has nabbed Santiago Maza’s Mexican documentary “State of Silence,” produced by Diego Luna and La Corriente del Golfo, the shingle he runs with Gael García Bernal.
The sales agency and distributor, which acquired international rights with the exception of North America and Latin America, has also unveiled the film’s first trailer.
“State of Silence,” which traces the harrowing stories of four journalists who risk their lives in pursuit of truth and transparency in Mexico, will have its world premiere simultaneously this month at the Tribeca and Guadalajara Film Festivals before competing at the Sheffield Film Festival for its European premiere.
Santiago Maza
Detailing the endangered state of press freedom in Mexico, the documentary follows the journalists’ journeys as they navigate treacherous terrain in their effort to shed light on the enduring suffering and anxiety experienced by their fellow citizens two decades after the so-called war on drugs began.

If you want to prove you’re committed to the continued survival of movie theaters, a great way to do it is to make a showing at the annual CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. It’s when studios go all out to wine and dine exhibitors, and screen previews of their upcoming film slates, hoping to squeeze out a few extra screens from your local multiplex.
This year, CinemaCon will feature a distributor on stage at Caesar’s Palace in front of every theater owner in the country, out to prove its dedication to theatrical. It’s not Apple, or Amazon and MGM, or Sony, which opened last year’s convention but will sit out this year. It’s Angel Studios, the distributor behind last year’s surprise box-office smash “Sound of Freedom.”

In director Roger Ross Williams’ Cassandro, we first meet Saúl Armendáriz — the real-life luchador portrayed by Gael García Bernal — when he’s still scraping his way through the amateur circuit. He’s got an uphill battle ahead: Not only is he smaller and lighter than most of his brawny opponents, he’s also openly gay and the subject of taunts and jeers from his leotard-clad colleagues.
And then, about 20 minutes in, Cassandro arrives. Armendáriz decides to embrace a new identity as one of lucha libre’s exoticos, extravagant male fighters...

In another timeline, in another universe, this might just be Gael Garcia Bernal’s moment. On the shortlist of contemporary actors more than deserving of that first Oscar nomination, his window for his acclaimed performance in “Cassandro” appears to be closing. After stellar reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, neither he nor the movie’s cast was able to participate in the film’s release in August. He was supposed to be celebrated with a career retrospective at the Telluride Film Festival at the beginning of September which would have kicked off his awards campaign.

Considering its foothold in American pop culture, it’s somewhat surprising that there have been so few movies about pro wrestling. In fact, over the last 15 years, the only real notable narrative films on the subject are Darren Aronofsky’s 2008 drama “The Wrestler” and the solid, but already forgotten 2018 dramedy “Fighting With My Family.” The last 12 months have been something of a sea change, comparably, with Roger Ross Williams’ superb “Cassandro” about famed exótico lucha libre wrestler Saúl Armendáriz and now, Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw,” a spotlight on the Von Erichs, one of the most respected and snakebit families in the sport.

Fans of the hit series “The Boys” have something exciting to look forward to. A new spinoff titled “The Boys: Mexico” is in the making, and it’s got some big names attached to it. Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, known for his work on “Blue Beetle” and Sony’s upcoming “El Muerto,” this series promises to expand the universe of “The Boys” in new and exciting ways.
According to Deadline, the project is still in its early stages, with casting underway and the search for a co-showrunner to work alongside Dunnet-Alcocer. What’s really stirring up interest is the involvement of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, both of whom are set to executive produce. There’s also a buzz that they might even step in front of the camera for supporting roles.

Dear Hollywood,
As the Thanksgiving holiday dawns, I urge you to include Latino films and performances on your winter watch list and give Hollywood Latinos and their projects a fair chance to be seen.
While Latinos are a growing and essential part of the cultural and social fabric of America, based on the dismal numbers from the recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Report on major Hollywood films released between 2007-2022, it’s clear that Hollywood — America’s narrative-creating and image-defining institution — is broadly failing to acknowledge or include the Latino community.
The Annenberg report notes slow progress over the years. In 2007, no Hispanic/Latino actor held a lead or co-lead role in major Hollywood films. In 2021 and 2022, there were marginal gains, with 10 films where Hispanic/Latino actors held lead or co-lead roles, out of a total of 109 and 118 leading roles, respectively. Among directors and producers of major Hollywood films, less than 5% were Hispanic or Latino,...

Roger Ross Williams, the director of Cassandro, opened up about why it was important to portray a positive queer story in the biopic based on a real-life gay amateur wrestler that turned Mexican lucha libre on its head.
“It was really important to tell a positive queer story about someone who is inspirational — someone who inspired me,” Williams said during a panel for the MGM Amazon Studios film at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles.
Williams said he made a short about the wrestling star and when he met the luchador he said, “You’re it! You’re my first scripted film.”
“I totally fell in love with his energy, his positivity, and the power of his story that in this macho, totally macho, male-dominated, homophobic world — he used that, he took back his power,” he said. “He used all the negativity and he turned it into a positive thing...

As part of this year’s industry program at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), producer Ted Hope sat down with the festival’s artistic director Orwa Nyrabia for an in-depth conversation about his career in U.S. independent film, the future of the industry, and the ways in which filmmakers and audiences are “trained by major players to adapt and conform to a creative process that colors only between the lines.”
Hope, who is at IDFA to support Vanessa Hope’s “Invisible Nation,” has navigated the independent filmmaking scene since the late 80s. The executive has produced over 70 films including Todd Solondz’s “Happiness” and, most recently, Roger Ross William’s fiction debut, “Cassandro.” From 2014 to 2020, Hope headed Amazon’s Original Movies.

Roger Ross Williams is having quite the year. So far, the Oscar-winning director has released his first fiction film, Amazon Studios’ “Cassandro”; the HBO documentary “Love to Love You, Donna Summer”; AppleTV+ docuseries “The Super Models”; and Hulu miniseries “The 1619 Project.”
Joining Williams’ impressive output this year is Netflix’s “Stamped From the Beginning,” an adaptation of the eponymous bestselling book by Ibram X. Kendi about the history of racism and anti-Blackness in the U.S. The film has its European premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam on Tuesday.
To have “Stamped From the Beginning” play at the festival is special to the American director, who now lives in the Dutch capital. “Amsterdam is my home, I love the city so much. Many of us probably think we know how racist anti-Black ideas started or think racism was always part of the human condition. Director Roger Ross Williams challenges these notions with his adaptation of Ibram X. Kendi’s book “Stamped From the Beginning.” Relying on testimony from Black female scholars and Kendi’s research, the helmer starts by posing a provocative question: “What is wrong with Black people?” By the end of the film, Williams unsparingly topples the sanctimoniousness inherent in thinking the answer is simple or clear. Even if it is.
True to its title, “Stamped From the Beginning” seeks to explain the origin of anti-Blackness. According to activist Angela Davis, one of the esteemed talking heads who give the film its credibility: “It’s not about the color of one’s skin or the grade of one’s hair. It’s about slavery.” That is how Europeans justified the...

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 22 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2023, Brendan Fraser, 54, won for his heartbreaking performance in “The Whale.” The year before saw Will Smith, 53, prevail for portraying tennis coach Richard Williams in “King Richard.” In 2021, Anthony Hopkins became the oldest Best Actor champ ever at age 83 when he won for “The Father.” At the 2020 Oscars, Joaquin Phoenix was 45 when he picked up the Best Actor Oscar for “Joker.” And in 2019, 37-year-old Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) triumphed for his riveting portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Ahead of a Netflix release next month, the first trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams brings Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s New York Times bestseller to the screen with Stamped from the Beginning. Live from New York on Saturday night, multi-hyphenate (and recent Rolling Stone cover star) Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, aka Bad Bunny, made his hosting debut on Saturday Night Live. The “King of Latin Trap,” WWE wrestler, and rising actor, with recent roles opposite Brad Pitt in the high-octane action flick Bullet Train and as Gael García Bernal’s lover in the wrestling drama Cassandro, not only flexed his comedy chops but also served as the night’s musical guest.

In the latest Saturday Night Live promo, this week’s host Bad Bunny squares off against this week’s musical guest. That would also be Bad Bunny.
Riffing on the singer-actor’s professed love for professional wrestling, the promo features cast member James Austin Johnson as a WWE-style announcer interviewing a rather soft-spoken “Benito” – Bad Bunny’s birth name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – who says he’s not nervous about the hosting gig. “Hell, no. I love being silly,” says Benito.
At that point, a tougher-looking opponent enters the “ring” to a smoke and heavy metal accompaniment. “Oh my God!,” says Johnson. “It’s Bad Bunny!”
“Well, I’ve got a Weekend Update for you, amigo,” says the sunglassed Bunny to Benito. “You suck.”
Bad Bunny, who was an SNL musical guest on February 20, 2021, has made regular appearances on WWE’s weekly television show Monday Night Raw.

Bad Bunny has a few choice insults for himself in the first promo for his upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live.
The singer and actor is set to make his hosting debut for the Oct. 21 episode and will also serve as musical guest. Bad Bunny was previously the musical guest for a season 46 episode that aired in February 2021 and featured host Regé-Jean Page.
In the video released Wednesday, castmember James Austin Johnson introduces the host in a WWE-style segment. When Johnson addresses the performer by his first name, Benito, and asks whether he has any nerves heading into the gig, Bad Bunny replies, “Hell, no. I love being silly.”
Suddenly, a more assertive version of the star enters from the back of the studio while holding a championship belt with the letters “SNL” on it and antagonizes his more mild-mannered counterpart. “Well, I’ve got a weekend update for you,...

For months now, we've been seeing paparazzi photos of Zac Efron looking extremely beefy with a silly haircut, and hearing reports about "The Bear" star Jeremy Allen White's "gross" diet in preparation for the new A24 film, "The Iron Claw." For outsiders looking in, "The Iron Claw" looks like a wrestling drama, and many are thrilled to see the pair of actors step into the squared circle of muscle ballet. However, the average Joe's opinion of wrestling is rooted in the heyday of Hulkamania, the Attitude Era of the late '90s, or through crossover stars who have since become actors. Here's the thing: It's really cool that Allen and Efron are going to be in a wrestling movie, but if you're anticipating something like the extremely fun "Fighting With My Family" starring Florence Pugh or the deeply moving biopic "Cassandro" starring Gael García Bernal ... you're in for a hell of a rude awakening.

In director Roger Ross Williams’ new uInterivew, he spoke about his film Cassandro, which is based on a real-life story of a professional wrestler who became famous for doing drag in the ring.
The film Cassandro is based on a wrestler, Cassandro. Williams explained how he had already made a “short documentary about Cassandro for the New Yorker series on Amazon” which is how he met him for the first time. “I totally fell in love with the real Cassandro and I fell in love with his story, his spirit,” Williams said. “He’s such a positive person, but he has a really inspirational story and he’s inspired a lot of people.”
After meeting the wrestler, Williams immediately knew that he was going to create a film about him, recalling, “I think it was on that first day I said to him, ‘You’re going to be my first fiction film.

For director Roger Ross Williams, his film “Cassandro” is a bit of a superhero movie. It tells the story of real-life Mexican professional wrestler Cassandro, aka Saúl Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal), and the femme “exótico” character he created that set out to subvert expectations around lucha libre.
“He’s [Cassandro] created a superhero that inspires thousands of young queer kids all across Mexico,” Williams told TheWrap.
The project has been long in the making for the director, initially starting out as a short documentary Williams made for The New Yorker. Almost immediately, he knew he wanted to tell a feature-length story on Armendáriz and that Bernal should play him, Williams said.
“I was like, ‘I’ve never made a scripted film. I don’t even know how to write a script, but I’ll figure it out and the only person who can play this is Gael,'” the director said.

Audiences watching Roger Ross Williams’ latest feature “Cassandro” might be surprised by one of the faces they see: that of musician Bad Bunny. The singer turned actor stars as Felipe, a friend and associate “exotico” wrestler Cassandro (Gael Garcia Bernal) meets. The film follows Cassandro’s journey of finding self-acceptance through a larger-than-life character.
“I remember the producers came to me and said, ‘Bad Bunny wants to be in the film.’ I almost fell off my chair,” Williams told TheWrap. According to the director, he auditioned several actors for the character of Felipe and had actually come down to the final group of contenders. “We screen tested a Felipe and the guy was about to get the call,” he said. That is until Bad Bunny’s people reached out.

In the larger-than-life world of lucha libre, there are “technicos” (good guys who fight for truth, justice, and the rule-abiding way) and there are “rudos” (villains who lie, cheat, and steal victories). There’s also a third category that’s neither hero nor heel, however, and that’s the “exotico.” A relatively late addition to Mexican wrestling’s stable of archetypes, these male luchadors often dressed in drag and played camped-up caricatures of feminine men.
