Is ok
shadowofhero-4651921 April 2022
Actually a handsome movie. He is not good but quite a mediocrity.

The actors convince the story and the dialogues are very fad. It's all trailing and tension you can rarely find. Too bad.

Slow burn
lightweavers1 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The protagonist is a well played role, the actress did a great job.

The location for filming was awesome, the camera work was well done, not to many close ups.

The pace was slow building and not too much information on too many charaters. You get the basic idea of the protagonist having left town for a long duration.

The color palette was smartly chosen, the wardrobe choices were also distinctive. The charaters class status, and financial standing, and level of importance to the plot of the story.

Tyler Posey's charater is well done, hair and make up choices were very distinctive, aside from the almost Sterotyped part of his charater having a Single Mom. In this case a manipulate with every breath Mom who clearly has little affection for her son.

A good story, weighed down by too many weaknesses
I_Ailurophile31 January 2023
The premise seems so simple, yet scarcely any sooner has the picture begun then a different notion begins to enter one's mind. I don't mean this in terms of the narrative thrust, but rather, instead of the adult-minded thriller one presumably anticipates, 'Brut force' comes off as something much more weirdly simplistic. The image comes to mind of a slightly older Nancy Drew, pointedly precocious in her youth and never losing that pluckiness. This is conveyed by the odd peppiness that defines the tone, including overly enthusiastic delivery of dialogue that like the scene writing is often much too exact and on the nose, nevermind playful - from all actors and for all characters, but protagonist Sloane above all. Moreover, filmmaker Eve Symington's direction is strangely brusque, maintaining what feels like an unnatural gait for the plot at large, from scene to scene, and even within a single scene. There's no pause between beats, and as a result the drama, tension, and mystery that the course of events should invite, or most any other feelings for that matter, don't have a chance to truly manifest. This is a game of "connect the dots" played without taking much time to stop and appreciate the image that's being formed, instead just zipping along the designated path as speedily as our eyes can make contact with the next point.

It's suitably well made from a technical standpoint, even if I disagree with some of the choices made - in editing, for example, or arrangement of shots and scenes, even something as small as a character tilting her head in a way that doesn't seem right. The only cast member I'm specifically familiar with is Patricia Velasquez; I know what she's capable of, and I recognize in her costars much the same potential. It's too bad the performances of all at best feel slightly off, echoing the tenor of the feature overall; I assume the actors would impress me if I saw them elsewhere, but here I only feel sorry for them - even lead Lelia Symington. In fact, that sadly quite goes for almost everything: the plot is solid in the broad strokes (if vaguely familiar at times), but every component part that goes into it, including its development on-screen, is some combination of rushed, unbelievably precise, off-center, or just unconvincing. Even most instances of intended weight don't come off well, and the more dramatic or even profound the movie tries to be, somehow the worse it gets; twists and turns feel empty and false not just for the sheer number crammed in, but also for the fact that they might be as feebly executed as lines of dialogue mere seconds apart. Only in the last 10-12 minutes does it feel like 'Brut force' has finally hit a point of genuinely firing on all cylinders, and while that strong finish is gratifying, it's just kind of too late to make a difference.

Or could it be that I'm just too jaded and cynical? Am I being too harsh, and unfair? I don't doubt Eve Symington's sincerity, or the work that anyone put into the production. Again, I actually do like the story. Ali Helnwein's original music is pretty terrific, too, lending what ambience it can to the proceedings at some points (the ending especially). I don't think this is altogether awful. It's also not half the film it could have been if everything were approached just a little more mindfully. With that said, it seems 'Brut force' is the first full-length feature of the filmmaker, and even though I think it emphatically falters, it's not a bad effort as such. I look forward to seeing what Symington may make in the future as she hones her skills. Still, to whatever extent this is enjoyable, it's considerably weighed down by weaknesses that are all too glaring. As it stands this is most recommendable to those who have a particular impetus to watch - wine lovers, perhaps, or fans of those involved - while for a wider audience, the importance of watching is probably rather less. It's okay enough if you come across it, I suppose, but definitely don't go out of your way, and keep your expectations tempered.

Warning! Waste of time and money.
cineflexblack1 May 2022
I am so confused how movies like this get made. I was so excited by the trailer, but the trailer is not the movie. I wanted to like it because I really like crime movies and shows and watch them all. But this is junk and I want my money back. It's all cliche and the tone feels so irregular from beat to beat. I warn you...don't waste your money. There are so many other good thrillers on Netflix to watch and those filmmakers know what they're doing. Don't be fooled by the trailer like I was.

Yikes. Simple movie.
Xavier_Stone27 April 2022
Simple camera work, simple script and this girl just keeps asking questions. It gets old fast and the fast forward button is your friend.

Main female character tackles, subdues and forces a confession out of a male character. I guess that's the force part of the movie. Annoying at best. All 10 star reviews are 4 days old with one review. Shocker.

perfectly fine student film / passion project
DaveMcG893 May 2022
Clearly a lot of reviews are from people who are about this film, it's fine, overly scripted and really lacks a directors voice.

I'm sure the team had fun but unless you know the cast i'd ignore the 10/10 ratings and the 100 on rotten tomatos.

As Bad as You Might THink
arfdawg-123 May 2022
The acting is barely passable.

The directing is poor. This director is far better at setting up a scene than actualy having the movie progress. She should be a cinematographer and not have lofy ideas of becoming Orson Welles. Cuz Orson she ain't.

Brut Force BTW is a bad title. The story moves slowly with little action. 90 minutes feels like 900.

The guitar track is distracting and a poor choice for music.

In sum, the movie LOOKS good. But it's NOT good.

Maaann...what a waste
kekutzes25 September 2022
It could've been a decent (almost great) movie, but if failed at all these points:
  • plot: a mix of Mexican telenovela with a dash of a thriller, lacking at the core of the story, trying to get to the finish line without following a proper sense
  • leading actress: bad acting (I can see that the Director - Eve Symington, used her sister, Leila, for the main character in this movie, but I don't know if her directing guidelines made "Sloane" sooo bad)
  • the title: whyyyyy? It's so misleading and it does nothing to do with ANYTHING in this movie. The Mexican workers have been scared with dead skunks and they were leaving the vineyard...that was a "brut force"??

Anyways, for all the others that will read the reviews of this movie - the very low rate is INDEED true! Don't waste your time (and money, maybe) watching it!

Nice small town USA story
doujyr23 April 2022
I love these sorts of films. Slower pace, nice scenery, no high tech fast paced high jinks. Enjoyed every minute of it. Only realised afterwards I'd got the actresses mixed up! I thought the main character was Patricia Velasquez and spent the whole film thinking she's changed a bit since The Mummy!

Just bad

Weak plot weak story. Pretty actress. She has to try to make this movie work all on her own

It just can't and ending is stupid

What a waste of time.

Both a murder mystery and a heartrending tale of family love
traversrhodes23 April 2022
A film noir murder mystery set in the beautiful wine country of California, this film addresses power struggles in the present (poor farm workers/landowners rich enough to pay off the cops) in the past (native americans/well-armed invaders) while keeping the plot and action flowing through countless clues and a haunting soundtrack. Complicated plots intermingle to reveal deep and meaningful backstories. One of the few murder mysteries I've seen where you know enough about the characters to care if they die. With action scenes to get the heart pumping and a love story to boot, this film had everything I could want for some Friday night fun.

Good story.
noelpil26 July 2022
Good film, worth watching, although the ending is somewhat abrupt. But something is wrong with the reviews. The ratings are very high like 9, 10, or very low like 1, 2. Definitely not normal these highly opposing ratings!

You me owe for tires
nogodnomasters17 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sloane Sawyer (Lelia Symington) returns to her home in Santa Lucia to help find out who is harassing the grape pickers. There is a rich lady who owns rival land. Not too hard to figure out but it takes 90 film minutes.

Lelia looks good in jeans, but that was about the extent of what the film had going for it. She asks questions and does a lot of stake outs. Lesser quality than a Hallmark. A real yawner.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Quiet force
kosmasp24 March 2023
No pun intended - the movie starts off quite good ... but while it does seem to maintain that quality ... the ending of it ... well all the twists do not help elevate this to anything close to what the beggining promised us. Shame then, but it is what is is ... also acting can feel differently from person to person.

The main character seems to be able to find secrets ... not worrying too much what that means for her own health .... I guess she is a glutton for punishment. But whatever her issue(s) is/are: they are nothing compared to that of the others. A decent effort then - if you can suspend your disbelief.

Film Noir in COLOR
stevenwendt-4528123 April 2022
Film Noir in COLOR! The acting, the sound, the cinematography were all great and pushed the movie along. The story is engaging and seriously picks up at the end. I don't want to give anything else away. Enjoy!

WOW!! What a ride
philwilson-7994121 April 2022
This movie popped up in my suggested list on Apple...10 min in I was completed sucked in by the story and the cinematography. Lelia Symington is great as the films protagonist, and the characters she meets along the way are straight out of a classic noir movie. I highly recommend this movie! Its a slow burn but wanting to know the answer to the movies mystery will keep you watching till the end.

harkeriv-526824 May 2022
I loved every minute of this movie! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time - the story pulls you right in, and the tension keeps building the whole way through. And awesome performances from the whole cast - I'll definitely be looking for more movies with Lelia Symington in them!

Really strong indie movie
ginibona4 May 2022
Compelling female lead, suspenseful twists and turns, beautifully gritty shots of wine country. This indie movie has a lot to offer. Lelia Symington does a great job drawing you in. She's convincingly headstrong and vulnerable. Wish we'd get even more insights into her character. Brut Force shows that it's not about budget but the craft of the director, actors and artistic team. Hoping to see more movies by this talented director.

A Twisty, Satisfying Thriller!
evesymington-2062821 April 2022
From Film Combat Syndicate: Good noir thrillers always pack some really great punches. I have to say though, Brut Force takes you right in the gut in one of the film's opening shots, proceeded by some solid writing and characterization in Eve Symington's feature debut. Topped with a gritty, slow-brewed story of crime, corruption and omnious intrigue that puts a myriad of things in focus, and with none other than her sibling Lelia Symington's screen talent front and center, Eve Symington's Brut Force is a chillingly piquant and terrific thriller worth enjoying, no matter your favorite choice of beverage.

Marvelous Depiction of an Untold Story
murrayfrancesca2 May 2022
The acting is phenomenal, especially by the lead character, up and coming actress, Lelia Symington. The directing superb. A cryptic thriller that keeps you glued to the screen, asking for more. This is a story that hasn't been told quite like this. It unravels the mysterious world of small town wine country, often left in the shadows. I hope to see more from this group of artists in the future. I would love to see this movie become a mini series because I think there is runway and much more left to be spoken about. Fantastic work!

One of the better thriller movies of 2022
fargonwinters-4640728 June 2022
I just finished watching this film and i must say i am pleasantly surprised. I went into this film knowing nothing about it i didn't read the synopsis or watch the trailer. I found this movie off a recommendation site and it was the best decision I've ever made, every moment left you on edge. The ending was brilliant, it caught me by surprise. Well done to Eve Symington for directing and making a brilliant film.

A must watch
joshie0328 June 2022
A good movie! Slow burn and omniscient! It is quiet riveting. The scenes and main location in California are filmed with a touch of elegance which surprisingly, adds on to the movie's intense atmosphere. I cold go on but the you need to watch it yourself. Worth the rent, ignore the bad reviews this is worth it.

Watched this with my wife and we were both very surprised by how much we enjoyed this. I'm not usually a fan of this genre but I loved China Town and this felt like a modern day take on that.

Loved it
cynvanity26 June 2022
The film is so much better then the trailer. Patricia Velasquez is such a talented actress and really toke it to another level. Plenty of plot twists that had me on edge and the ending was unexpected. I highly recommend Brut Force. A good weekend flick!
