We all should, really, for being so Lame. As rumored this week, Idol may shake up its entire judging panel next season in an effort to boost ratings. It’s getting beaten in the adult demo by repeats of The Big Bang Theory and a fresh-from-the-swamp ep of Duck Dynasty. Oof. Does the show even matter anymore? It’s, like, way existential.
Go right to Page 2 for our list of potential new judges, and suggest your own! I need to rant for a bit below.
Now, I am by no means a fan of this current low-chemistry judging panel. Keith Urban seems genuine,...

The evidence is pretty clear that smoking in movies influences lighting up in real life, with studies suggesting that kids in particular can be more likely to take up the habit after seeing stars who smoke.
But even though smoking is probably less socially acceptable in the U.S. than ever before, we still see gorgeous men and women make the habit look glamorous by lighting up on the big screen. (Hello, have you seen the trailer for Gangster Squad? Emma Stone exhales a plume of smoke just as Ryan Gosling tries to seduce her, probably launching more than a few new teen smokers.)

Some familiar faces will again be stepping into the director’s chair for Mad Men’s upcoming season: Jon Hamm and John Slattery. Slattery tells THR that he will be contributing two more episodes to the series and that Hamm will also be joining him behind the scenes. Both men have previously directed episodes, combining for a total of four throughout the series’ five seasons—Hamm was responsible for season five’s “Tea Leaves,” and Slattery helmed “The Rejected” and “Blowing Smoke” from season four, as well as last season’s “Signal 30.” Earlier this fall, the actors and crew began work on the sixth...

How strange is Herman Cain's latest poltical ad? Stange enough that it bears no resemblance to a political ad until about a minute and 20 seconds into its nearly four-minute running time. That's when "Justified" actor and Cain supporter Nick Searcy -- playing himself, playing a cowboy -- strikes back at two ne'er-do-wells who mock him for carrying flowers. Yellow flowers. Also: Cain's New Ad is Blowing Smoke (Video) "Why's it always gotta be about color? What are you guys, liberals?" Searcy asks. It's at this point -- when the ad draws a false equivalency...

Just in case you missed the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards last night, here's a quick rundown of what you missed: Modern Family dominated in the comedy category once again and Mad Men won Best Drama, although many of the other awards were spread out among numerous shows. I know a lot of people will be excited to see that Kyle Chandler won Best Actor for his role as Coach Taylor in Friday Night Lights and Peter Dinklage took home the Supporting Actor award for Game of Thrones. Martin Scorsese also picked up his first ever Emmy for directing the pilot episode of Boardwalk Empire. Were you surprised by any of the choices? Did they get any of the categories wrong? The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards were held in the early hours of this morning, and though I unfortunately wasn’t able to watch it, the results are in, courtesy of the Emmys’ own site, with so much great talent being deservedly well recognised.
For those unable to watch the show, you can catch it on Five USA at 10 tonight, with your host for the evening being Jane Lynch, best known for her role as Sue Sylvester in Glee.
We took a look at the nominations last night, as well as some of the awards that had already been announced, with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul McCrane, and Futurama already receiving their awards in an earlier ceremony last weekend.
For now, we shall turn our attention to last night though, and the brilliant winners from the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards.

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards are being held in the early hours of tomorrow morning, and so in the run-up to the ceremony, we thought we’d give you a run-down of this year’s nominees.
For those able to watch the show (which is also being shown on Five USA tomorrow night at 10), you can look forward to your host for the evening being Jane Lynch, best known for her role as Sue Sylvester in Glee.
And for those unacquainted with the awards, you can pretty much think of them as the television equivalent to the Oscars, with the Primetime Emmy Awards recognising the best talent in primetime television.
A few of the awards were already presented to the winners at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last weekend, so I’ll do a summary of those categories first, followed by the nominees for tonight’s awards ceremony. There are...

"Mad Men" continues to dominate the race for Best Drama Writing with two nominations this year for its fourth season. Series creator Matthew Weiner has won three years in a row and is now poised to win a fourth for the episode "The Suitcase." -Inserts:25- In this intimate, emotional episode, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) work through the night – and right through Peggy's birthday dinner – on an ad for Samsonite. They bicker and bond, expressing resentments and making heartfelt gestures of friendship. One of the most acclaimed episodes of the television season, it was also submitted by Hamm and Moss in the drama acting races. In just four seasons on the air, "Mad Men" has amassed ten writing nominations, and Weiner has written or co-written all but one of those episodes: "Blowing Smoke," the series's second nomination this year, penned by husband and wife team Andre and Maria Jacquemett.

Jon Hamm will be even more involved than usual with the season premiere of "Mad Men" next year.
Hamm says he's set to make his directorial debut on the Season 5 opener. "The wheels have officially been set in motion to make that happen. It's a very exciting challenge that I'm looking forward to with a mixture of utter fear and excitement," he tells TVLine.
He will be the second member of the cast to helm an episode; John Slattery directed a pair of episodes, "The Rejected" and "Blowing Smoke," last season.
Hamm, who's currently getting big laughs for his jerkwad role in "Bridesmaids," says directing an episode of "Mad Men" has been "in the back of my mind," and he's looking forward to working with the show's cast and crew in a different way.
"It helps to have people you know and trust surrounding you," he says. "We've been fortunate...

The fifth season of AMC’s Emmy Award-winning series Mad Men won’t hit the airwaves until March 2012 – a full 17 months After the last original episode aired. That gives Matthew Weiner and his Writers’ Room ample time to answer lingering questions fans of the show have. (Spoiler Alert: if you haven’t yet caught all of the 52 episodes of Mad Men that has aired so far, stop reading this article and go buy or rent the first four seasons on DVD or Blu-ray; or wait until July 27 to watch them on Netflix.com.)
What Year(s) Will Season Five Cover?
The Mad Men Season 4 Finale (“Tomorrowland”) was set in October 1965. One logical conclusion would be that the fifth season would cover events happening in 1966 but with Weiner having signed a 3-year writer/producer deal with Lionsgate (the studio that makes Mad Men), it essentially means that Season Seven would be the show’s last.

If you do, you've already sussed out what you think it all means and you're ahead of us.

I only partially kid because both movies are byootiful (biutiful?) but...come on. I Am Love is not going to get any Oscar nominations and that is going to make me jump off my web cliff.

Okay, I get it. Mad Men is a character drama, free from the constraints of most TV shows following a convenient formula of narrative arcs and manageable adjustments to the status quo. It's a show all about subtlety and nuance, even when nothing happens. But by the end of season finale "Tomorrowland," I have to ask, shouldn't Something happen on this show?
You know, something besides "Hey guys, remember how we've been building up the uncertain future of Sdcp all season? Well we got a pantyhose account that will hold us over for a little bit. Also, I'm going to marry my secretary who you've seen twice." What?!
It's not that "Tomorrowland" is a bad hour of television by any means (though it pales in comparison to last week's stellar "Blowing Smoke,") but AMC season finales have a nasty habit of leaving questions unanswered and failing to address the plots they've built.

If you're looking for details on what's going to happen in the Season 4 finale of "Mad Men" Sunday (Oct. 17), this isn't the right place.
Going into an interview with series creator Matthew Weiner, who's notoriously protective of his show, we know it's pretty much a fool's errand to ask for specifics about the finale. He confirms that notion at just the mention of the episode: "You don't want to know," he says with a laugh.
Fortunately, the interview doesn't end there. Zap2it talked with Weiner this week while he took a break from a much longer interview with the Archive of American Television, which tracks the history of TV through interviews with the people who make it. Weiner talked about the course of Season 4, his view of the show vs. the audience's and his hopes for the finale. An edited version of our conversation is below.

The plot points keep slamming home in "Blowing Smoke," the penultimate episode of Mad Men's Season 4 as we head to next week's season end in "Tomorrowland." As always, there be spoilers ahead. Well, Roger Sterling isn't nearly so downcast as he seemed in the last episode, after having his loss of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce's anchor tenant client finally, and oh so pathetically, revealed. Why not? We don't know. Instead it's another old friend who's circling the drain, albeit one we haven't seen since she figured prominently in Season 1, free-spirited boho illustrator Midge Daniels, the first Don Draper galpal we came to know. And it's another core character, original Sterling Coo co-founder Bert Cooper, saying arrivederci. If there's one thing we've learned in nearly four seasons of Mad Men, it's that Don Draper is a survivor. He's good at making...

It's the penultimate episode of the season, Scdp is desperate, and Don is making moves. We've come a long way since the beginning of the season, where Don struggled with his own identity, and now Scdp is struggling with theirs. The title "Blowing Smoke" aptly applies, as the characters all literally blow smoke, chain-smoking cigarettes and figuratively, deceiving, joking, pretending with one another. Even though Roger is a disaster, John Slattery shows us he certainly is not with his masterful direction. All of the accounts think that Scdp is "blowing smoke" by thinking they'll still be around in six months. That's the problem we open with as Don works the secret Heinz meeting that Faye got for him. "I thought you didn't go in for those kinds of shenanigans." - Peggy Olsen It's fitting in a way that with Don Draper's life balancing precipitously on a knife's edge, that he would cross paths with a figure from his past whose own life has turned out to be even more tragically dead-ended than one could imagine. Offering a looking glass in which to view his own life's decisions, Don sees a fate avoided, a life worse than his own, an addiction that's unable to be sated, burning through the body of someone he once loved. On this week's episode of Mad Men ("Blowing Smoke"), written by Andre Jacquemetton and Maria Jacquemetton and directed by John Slattery, things went from bad to worse for the partners at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, as they were faced with some tough decisions to make. Would they begin to lay off staff? Could they...

Just 12 episodes into the "Mad Men" era of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce -- a time period of about 19 months -- we're already seeing the possible collapse of the agency created by Sterling Cooper's rogue leaders. And it's a shame; the spark that began in Season Three's finale "Shut the Door. Have a Seat" reignited the series for its Fourth Season, presenting a mostly new workplace with new story lines. Now, in Season Four's "Blowing Smoke," it simply feels that we've come full circle, back to an agency in trouble and back to characters scrambling to survive. Scdp lost most of its business when it lost American Tobacco, and its reps are having trouble bringing in new accounts, let alone getting potential clients to take a meeting. We're back to where we were a season ago, but now, there's even more to lose.

There was no knight in shining armour this week at Scdp which leaves just one more episode for the company to be saved this season. Attempts were made to find a way to keep doors open but the phrase ‘in six months time’ was all that could be obtained at this point. I have no idea in what direction the finale will take us in after this excellent penultimate outing (directed once again by Roger Sterling himself John Slattery) but the bumpy journey that these characters have been on whilst working at this fledgling firm has been a terrific one.
After unsuccessfully securing new business with another tobacco firm and essentially striking out with Heinz, Don did the thing he does best and went creative taking out a full page ad in The New York Times (wonder how much would that cost?) under the provocative title “Why I’m quitting...

This all feels a little too familiar.
Didn't last season end with the company being in trouble, only for it to be saved at the very end? In season three, it was starting a whole new agency, and unless some crazy twist comes along, season four's finale will be highlighted by some big company saving Scdp from going under.
"Blowing Smoke" was actually a pretty sad episode. On many accounts, I just felt really bad for the characters of Mad Men. At the forefront were the many employees at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.
Because of the recent problems of Scdp, no new clients are ready to commit to the struggling agency. After the partners went through so much trouble to get this new agency put together at the end of last season, it was tough to watch them see it fall apart only a year later.

A review of last night's "Mad Men" coming up just as soon as someone gets my shoes... "You are a certain kind of girl, and tobacco is your ideal boyfriend." -Geoff Atherton "Can you get us a date?" -Don Last week's episode ended with Don's professional and romantic futures both very much in doubt. "Blowing Smoke" is mainly concerned with the work situation, but views it through the prism of romance. Geoff Atherton frames Scdp's pursuit of a big new client in dating language, and when the partners and Harry stand in the lobby waiting for the Phillip Morris people, they...

Best. Mad Men. Ever. "Blowing Smoke" certainly had us all on the edge of our seats, and God only knows what "Tomorrowland" could bring to the table as the future of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce hangs in the balance.
I honestly don't even know where to begin. "Blowing Smoke" deserves such a cerebral, in depth analysis of all its character turns, callbacks, confrontations and plot progression, and yet I want nothing more than to craft a loving ode geeking out over how fantastically awesome it was. I want to bathe in it. I want to smell it on my sheets and wash them even less than I do now. I want it to sing a little song as I dance for its amusement.
Directed by John Slattery, the penultimate episode of the fourth season rips apart relationships all across Sdcp in the wake of big tobacco Lucky Strike's leaving. Pete...

Sally and Betty were absent from the most recent episode of Mad Men, as a crisis at Scdp was the focus of "Chinese Wall."
But viewers will go inside the Francis household on Sunday night, as Sally surprises Betty with a request in this scene from "Blowing Smoke." The clip doesn't reveal much about what's on tap, but it's still worth a viewing:

Crystal’s performance during Inspirational Week was so touching that it even gave Blake goosebumps!
Hot damn you’re good, Crystal Bowersox. So good, in fact, that HollywoodLife.com’s own personal Idol judge, Blake Lewis, was ready to name you the newest ‘American Idol’ after watching you perform Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” April 20 during Inspirational Week. “I got goosebumps,” the 28-year-old Season 6 runner-up tells us. “With a performance like that, I was just waiting for [Ryan] Seacrest to come up and say: ‘This is your American Idol.’”
Who else did our judge dig last night? Take it away, Blake!
Highlight 1: ‘Idol Gives Back’ has to be one of my favorite shows out of all the episodes each season of American Idol. Alicia Keys was the guest mentor last night, and they picked the right person for it! She is incredibly talented and such a passionate performer. Her...

You’re either for or against what Between the Buried and Me has done to grind metal. The form is no longer dictated by continuously forked-rhythm mandates which Napalm Death and Morbid Angel gorged themselves upon for years. Between the Buried and Me’s Alaska opened up the possibility of new horizons amidst a brute ugly din of aggression and ridiculous bpms. Their 2007 masterpiece Colors proved grind metal had previously-unthinkable space to accommodate for brainy mathematics, blurring prog and outside-the-box genre shenanigans ala Mr. Bungle.
Fact of the matter, Between the Buried and Me is one of the metal revival’s most important groups along with Mastodon, Isis, Opeth and Dillinger Escape Plan. This is a band looking to not only break molds, but they seek a yin and yan battleground between refinement and chicanery. Almost everything Between the Buried and Me has sought to dabble with in the past...
