An untitled project is set to be fast-tracked by Paramount and marks Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to 2022’s Babylon.
The last we heard from Damien Chazelle, he was expressing a degree of uncertainty about his future as a director.
While there’s surely be no shortage of studios happy to back the La La Land director given the past successes he’s enjoyed, Chazelle is coming off the first real flop of his career, that being 2022’s Babylon. Despite possessing plenty to commend itself, Chazelle’s ode to the excesses of the early days of Hollywood didn’t land with audiences and reportedly lost Paramount somewhere in the vicinity of $90m.
While Babylon may find itself being reappraised somewhere down the line, that doesn’t help Chazelle in the short term and he admitted as much recently, expressing fears that his next project might struggle to get off the ground,...

Oscar winner Damien Chazelle has set his next feature with Paramount.
The La La Land filmmaker wrote and will direct the feature, with plot details being kept under wraps. The movie is being produced under Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton’s Wild Chickens Productions banner, as part of their first look deal with the studio that was signed in 2022. Plot details are not yet known and talent has yet to be attached but the project is a priority for the studio.
Chazelle is acting as a producer on another Paramount feature: the David Ayer directed Heart of the Beast. Heart of the Beast also falls under his first-look pact with Paramount.

Paramount Pictures will back Damien Chazelle’s next feature film.
The collaboration reunites the director with the studio behind his most recent movie, 2022’s “Babylon,” a debauched and drug-fueled ode to the golden age of showbiz. Despite its grand ambitions and starry cast of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, “Babylon” became an epic box office disaster with just $63 million worldwide against its $80 million budget (not including the pricey marketing campaign).
Paramount announced Chazelle’s new movie as part of its presentation at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of movie theater owners that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas. The studio didn’t share a single detail — not the genre, cast, plot or release timeline — about Chazelle’s new film. Of course, Paramount didn’t reveal the budget either, although Chazelle presumably won’t get the same blank check to fund the upcoming movie.

Visual effects veteran Tim McGovern, who received a Special Achievement Oscar for the VFX in the 1990 sci-fi classic “Total Recall,” has died, his wife Reena NeGandhi announced Saturday on social media. He was 68.
The VFX innovator served as CGI director on Paul Verhoeven’s “Total Recall,” which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was based on Philip K. Ryan Gosling is probably one of the best physical comedians of his generation. Writing these words a handful of days after the Oscars where, even though he didn’t take home a prize, Gosling won the night by belting “I’m Just Ken” in Margot Robbie’s ear, is to state the obvious. But it wasn’t that long ago when the actor was mostly renowned for playing remote and aloof characters. Think First Man’s Neil Armstrong, Blade Runner 2049’s K, and Drive’s, um, Driver. It’s thus satisfying to see audiences finally come around to recognizing the star’s stealthily hilarious comic timing.
Well, the cat’s out of the bag now, and with The Fall Guy following Barbie, it’s safe to say Gosling has transitioned to the groovy himbo stage of his career. Long may it last if it inspires movies as frothy and...

Following the huge financial disappointment of 2022’s Babylon, Damien Chazelle states that he’s not even sure if his next script will get made.
Damien Chazelle is at an interesting point in his career. Up until 2022’s Babylon, everything the director’s previous three films had earned critical plaudits or made lots of cash. In the case of Whiplash and La La Land, those two films did both and solidified Chazelle’s reputation as one of a handful of directors set to revive Hollywood’s output and lead a new generation of American filmmakers.
However, the last few years have seen something of a bump in the road for Chazelle.
Following his Oscar for Best Director in the wake of La La Land, Chazelle has made 2018’s First Man and then 2022’s Babylon. The former didn’t exactly set the box office on fire but it did enough, and picked up some critical praise.

Having delivered acclaimed gems including La La Land, First Man, and Whiplash, Damien Chazelle was given a huge budget and full creative control for Babylon. While the director didn’t compromise his vision for the film and delivered what he set out to make, the underwhelming returns at the box office have now created concerns for his next feature.
Opposed to its budget of $80 million, Babylon only managed to rack in $15 million domestically, becoming a major flop for Paramount. The acclaimed director is now unsure whether his next project will see the end of the tunnel or not, as fans come forward to express their love for Babylon.

Director Damien Chazelle became the youngest recipient of the Oscar for Best Director when he won the coveted award for his musical romance La La Land. He has helmed multiple critical darlings such as Whiplash and First Man, which have given him the status of a modern-day auteur due to certain directorial trademarks that he employs in his films.
While he had an amazing record at the box office and during Awards season with the above-mentioned films, he seemed to have missed the mark with his last film Babylon. Starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Diego Calva, the film was a box office disaster. Chazelle recently mentioned that he might not be able to make his next film due to Babylon’s failure.

As Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to First Man and short-lived Best Picture winner La La Land, buzz was loud over Babylon. With a cast of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, a story centering around the dawn of Hollywood’s sound age and a budget north of $80 million, it had everything going for it. And then it made just over $3.5 million on opening weekend, killing both the movie and showing that its wunderkind director – who was the youngest Best Director winner ever at 32 – was fallible. Now, as he works on his next project, Chazelle has a realistic perspective that it will be a long time before he’s trusted with so much money.
Speaking on TCM’s Talking Pictures podcast, Chazelle said he’s staying active post-Babylon but may have to scale down this production. “I’ve been head in the sand. I’ve been sort of busy writing. So...

In Hollywood, they say you’re only as good as your last credit.
Damien Chazelle is weighing what that means for him following the box office failure of his big-budget film Babylon starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Diego Calva. Made for a reported $80 million before marketing costs, the Paramount Pictures release opened to a disastrous $3.6 million before topping out at $15.3 million domestic. With international grosses, it finished at $63.4 million worldwide.
“Certainly, in financial terms, Babylon didn’t work at all,” the Oscar-winning filmmaker told Ben Mankiewicz during an interview on his podcast, Talking Pictures. “You try to not have that affect what you’re doing creatively, but, at some level, it can’t help but affect it. But maybe that’s Ok? I have [a] very mixed mind about it. Who knows? Maybe I won’t be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see.

About a decade ago, Damien Chazelle was Hollywood’s hottest young filmmaker. His indie hit “Whiplash” made tens of millions of dollars in profit and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. He followed it up with “La La Land,” which earned hundreds of millions in profit and made him the youngest Best Director Oscar winner ever at age 32. He was riding high. But what goes up must come down.
His next film, 2018’s “First Man,” underperformed at the box office and the Oscars. And 2022’s “Babylon” was an outright flop, losing money, winning no Academy Awards, and earning mixed reviews from critics and a fair amount of derision for its three-hour runtime and over-the-top spectacle – this despite a loyal hive of fans who remain convinced it will age like a lost masterpiece. Regardless, it was the kind of exercise in excess that can derail a director...

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” pulled off a surprise tally at the Oscar nominations announcement, riding in with three bids, the most for a movie that was not recognized in the Best Picture category this year. It cracked Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects, signaling significant support for the Apple Original Films’ historical epic, particularly in the last category as it took out powerful contenders like “Society of the Snow,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Best Picture nominee “Poor Things.” Since the VFX race looks to be up in the air, “Napoleon” may have a stronger chance of emerging victorious than most awards pundits think.
“Napoleon’s” four visual effects artists are competing alongside those from “The Creator,” “Godzilla Minus One,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.” This is the first nomination for Martin-Fenouillet and the second for Henley, who was...

According to Gold Derby’s current combined predictions, “Godzilla Minus One” is the frontrunner to win Best Visual Effects with 17/5 odds at this year’s Oscars. Meanwhile “Napoleon” is in fourth place with 9/2 odds. However there’s a trend with winners in this category that may benefit the latter film.

With Spaceman, Adam Sandler joins a cohort of weepy astronauts plundering the woes of the male psyche far from Earth. What are all these sad blokes trying to tell us?
The Sad Man in Space is back! He was last seen orbiting our cinemas five years ago, when the average big-screen astronaut was less inclined to explore strange new worlds or fight bug-eyed monsters than to sit in a tin can feeling sorry for himself. Ryan Gosling was grief-stricken in First Man, Brad Pitt had issues in Ad Astra, Robert Pattinson was in low spirits in High Life, and Matthew McConaughey sobbed his eyes out in Interstellar, to name just four of the men who were lost in space in more ways than one. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the iconic Sundance Film Festival, the nonprofit Sundance Institute is looking back on the legacy of films that debuted at the fest.
After surveying more than 500 filmmakers, critics, and industry members, Damien Chazelle’s 2014 debut feature “Whiplash” was awarded the title of top Sundance film of all time. “Whiplash” actor Jk Simmons won the Academy Award for his portrayal of an abusive music teacher opposite Miles Teller. Writer-director Chazelle went on to direct “First Man,” “La La Land,” and “Babylon.”
The Sundance Film Festival since 1985 has premiered 4,000 feature films over the decades. The collective top 10 list of the Sundance Film Festival celebrates films that have “touched hearts and changed lives,” according to the Institute.
While Chazelle’s Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize-winning “Whiplash” landed in the top slot, Joel and Ethan Coen’s directorial debut “Blood Simple,” Alfonso Cuarón’s “Y tu mamá también,...

“What’s remarkable is how lucky I have been to work with incredible directors,” “Maestro” screenwriter Josh Singer tells me, referring to such filmmakers as Tom McCarthy, Damien Chazelle (“First Man”), Steven Spielberg (“The Post”) and now Bradley Cooper. He notes how Cooper, the co-writer/director/actor/producer of “Maestro,” shares the same “uncompromising passion” as the other helmers, adding, “He likes to go deep, and he likes to work hard, and he likes to get it right, which is very much how I like to work.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Cooper stars as American composer Leonard Bernstein and Carey Mulligan plays his wife Felicia Montealegre in Netflix’s high-profile biopic. Singer calls Cooper’s “choices” as an actor and as a director “genius,” especially once he saw “the whole thing put together.” He reveals how Cooper “has that sort of preternatural sense of where he is at...

Josh Singer takes a lot of notes. For an in-demand screenwriter like him that makes sense, but Singer’s latest project, Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro,” required even more copious files and neat notes. After all, Singer has been working on it for over a decade.
Over a recent Zoom interview with IndieWire, Singer narrated a little bit of his typical notes-finding experience: “Hold on, let me go into files. I’m going into my Bernstein file, which is very long, and then I’m going into, Ok, here: Essentially, in 2008 [producers] Fred Berner and Amy Durning approached the Bernstein family, and they wound up, over the next two years, negotiating life rights.”
This is just the start of the odyssey. By 2010, the producers started looking for a director. Sometime around 2013, they locked in Martin Scorsese to direct. Soon after, they came knocking at Singer’s door.

Tucked into the official logline of Andrew Haigh’s heartbreaking “All of Us Strangers” are plenty of intriguing ideas. Mainly, there’s the revelation that Harry’s (played by Andrew Scott) parents are long dead by the time the film opens, and begin appearing to him three decades after they passed away. So stars Claire Foy and Jamie Bell, known simply as “Mum” and “Dad” in the film, are, what? Ghosts? Memories made corporeal? Dreams?
For Foy, those big questions weren’t the most thrilling part of the film. Instead, it was the chance to dive so deeply into a character that, even more than a year since the end of production — the film shot in the summer of 2022 in the UK — she can still conjure up intensely personal alternate realities for a woman literally bound in time.

Two decades after a group of chickens escaped from a farm, they’re back for more. Netflix’s “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” is a sequel 23 years in the making, and it is much bigger in scope than its predecessor. After all, the film is about breaking back into a farm — one substantially bigger than in the first film. In order to handle the scale of the story and the production, which more than doubled the number of units and character models, Aardman Animations turned to digital tools and virtual production.
“We couldn’t achieve the scope and scale of this film 20 years ago because CG wasn’t a reliable source,” animation supervisor Ian Whitlock told IndieWire during a visit to the set of the film at Aardman’s studios in Bristol, U.K. “But even with CG, we are still very tight on the style of the animation.

Universal's "Wolf Man" remake, a project that's long remained in various stages of development over the years, is finally rounding into shape. Last we heard, the film was going to star Ryan Gosling as the eponymous Universal monster with "The Place Beyond the Pines" filmmaker Derek Cianfrance in the director's chair, taking over for original director Leigh Whannell (who had proven himself as a brilliant fit in this new Monster-verse with his 2020 reimagining of "The Invisible Man") after the latter departed due to scheduling conflicts. Well, I hope you weren't too invested in that news because it seems the studio has gone back to the drawing board and emerged with an even more exciting version of the movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Whannell has found his way back to the production and will once again direct the feature ... with a new leading man in place. Gosling is the...

Less than two months after she hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the third time, Emma Stone picked up her first Best Actress Oscar nomination for “La La Land,” which soon led to a victory at the 2017 Academy Awards. As the star of “Poor Things,” she is now on a quest for a bookend trophy that would coincide with her recent entry into said NBC sketch series’ prestigious Five-Timers Club. Even if history doesn’t fully repeat itself, just being included in 2024’s lead actress lineup would give her the impressive distinction of being the only performer with multiple same-category Oscar bids directly linked to “SNL” hosting gigs.
Stone’s fifth official “SNL” appearance (not counting three mid-2010s cameos) occurred on December 2, just one day before the seventh anniversary of her fortuitous third outing. She had also previously served as emcee in October 2010, November 2011, and April 2019. This time, she began...

Millions around the world have been affected in one way or another by the great composer Leonard Bernstein's work over the decades, so it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would finally get around to ushering a prestige biopic into production with this year's "Maestro." (/Film's Rafael Motamayor reviewed the film out of the London Film Festival.) It wasn't for a lack of trying, mind you, as no lesser names than Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, both of whom remain involved as producers, previously took their own shots at bringing this story to the big screen. That responsibility now falls on the shoulders of director and star Bradley Cooper, and it's not one he's taking lightly.

Cinematographer Linus Sandgren says he and director Emerald Fennell relied on their emotions and instincts to conjure the “gothic” look of “Saltburn,” the hybrid psychological horror and dark comedy just screened at the Camerimage cinematography festival in Torun, Poland.
The film’s tight Academy aspect ratio, for one thing, was an idea that arose only after meeting with Fennell, who wrote the over-the-top story of a strange, middle-class Oxford student, Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), infiltrating the world of the filthy rich one sunny summer.
Meanwhile, the shooting location, a properly gloomy and stodgy estate, seemed to call out for the boxy cinematic frame they chose, says Sandgren, who spoke at Camerimage’s main screening hall. The mansion’s beveled ceilings, arches, ancient walls and blood-red floors indeed seem to close in on all sides as the family of Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi) reluctantly admits the novel interloper into their midst.

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on December 21, 2023. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 23. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony on March 10.

“In Barbieland, nothing is alive. It’s an interior world, so there’s no wind, no water. Even the trees, they don’t have real leaves to create this sound,” explains Ai-Ling Lee of “Barbie.” The Oscar nominee served as sound designer for the hit Warner Bros. film, which takes viewers into the delightful plastic world of the famous Mattel doll. Given the artifice of Barbie’s pink paradise, Lee had to bring a child-like playfulness to every sound effect. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

This approach tied into the desire from writer and director Greta Gerwig to make the artificial dreamland sound “pleasant and inviting.” So even though there’s no water while Margot Robbie’s titular character showers, Lee added a rain-stick effect to convey the element in an artificial way.

Singer spoke of the film via Netflix’s Tudum, “I think people will see the complexity of marriage and the many forms love can take. I think those are both powerful themes.” The teaser debuted in August, and Cooper faced a bit of a backlash due to his prosthetic nose for the character drawing controversy.

“Billed as an emotionally epic examination of family and love, Maestro tells the complex love story of Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre...

64 years after its debut on CBS, no series has been able to match the consistency of quality or the rigorousness of thought that Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone" demonstrated over its five stellar seasons. For many, the series' most memorable episodes set us on edge via science fiction or straight-up horror elements, but Serling and his roster of first-rate writers could be just as brilliant when using nothing but plain old reality to freak us out.
The Red Scare metaphor "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is probably the finest example of this (especially in an era where a massive blackout could easily plunge millions of technology reliant humans into utter chaos), but it's closely followed by the pilot episode that established the series as a one-of-a-kind mindf***. Written by Serling himself, "Where Is Everybody?" sets up as a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Earl Holliman plays an amnesiac who finds...

Andrew Scott sees dead people, but he could also see an Oscar nomination come his way with his heartbreaking and tenderly emotional turn as a gay screenwriter in Andrew Haigh’s drama “All of Us Strangers.”
Loosely based on Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel “Strangers,” the film follows screenwriter Adam (Scott), who, after an encounter with his neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), is mysteriously pulled back into his childhood home, where it appears his long-dead parents (played by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are actually alive — and haven’t aged in 30 years.
Emmy nominee Scott (guest drama actor in 2020 for “Black Mirror”) has been seamlessly maneuvering back and forth between film and television, notably garnering massive attention for his “hot priest” role on “Fleabag.” He absorbs the underlying pain of losing parents, while also grappling with the lingering question of whether they would approve of you or not. It may sound like...
