A Fond Remembrance Of An Old Pal: 'Tim Speedle'
ccthemovieman-125 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Two things were shocking in this episode and the writers made sure we weren't seeing things because they repeated them several times. The first was seeing an old pal, "Tim Speedle," back from the dead (in "Eric Delko's" mind) and the second was seeing a guy fondle a girl's breast. Yeah, she had clothes but it was still startling enough for CSI to show the scene three times. Boy, they keep "pushing the envelope" on television, don't they?

The parts with "Speedo" were a little far out but still very cool and very sad, at the same time. Rory Cochrane played that guy, a regular CSI member the first three seasons, before being killed, shot to death by some thug. Cochrane wanted off the show, and so they literally eliminated his character.

Nobody took Tim Speedle's death harder than Delko, who was best-buddies with his CSI comrade. Tim and Eric would trade friendly insults with each other most episodes and both were fun to watch. They made a great team. I can't say the sometimes-annoying "Ryan Wolfe" (Jonathan Togo), who replaced Speedle, is in the same class. This episode made me realize I, too, miss that character and enjoyed the banter between Speedle and Delko. The show is still good but would be better had Cochrane stayed.

Anyway, we discover Delko has never fully been able to recover from his friend's loss, hence the hallucinations where he's swears he sees and talks to Speedle. The latter helps him solve this case, he thinks. Horatio knows better, of course, and helps Eric, by the end of the show, get some professional counseling with this issue.

The story deals more, however, with two young people trapped in an SUV by the beach, the female dying from carbon monoxide and the male winding up hanging on in the hospital after smashing his way out of the vehicle. The twists and turns involve whether this was a suicide or a murder. Later, a shooting at a college involves somebody financially involved with the two young people.

However, fans of this series will remember the scenes with "Speedo," I would think, more than anything else. Too bad he couldn't be resurrected and return to CSI!

Why did Eric have Speed's card, and how did Dan Cooper get it?
kimberjoy-563007 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Also, it's not like they had online banking at the time this was filmed, so how would Eric know there was activity on the card, seeing as Dan had it in his possession when the activity was discovered?

Overall this is one of those episodes I will re-watch now & then.

Poor Delko has been through so much, and now he feels like he's lost his best friend all over again.

Horatio is so low-key here. He's this almost palpable presence even when unseen, and gently makes it clear he expects to be given the responsibility over all his team... including the lost.

I choked up a bit myself when Calleigh told Dan that he hurt his colleagues by using what he regarded as "free money". Emily Procter has such a crystalline drawl, angelic eyes and contrasting grit in her character. I just love this cast.
