Another Star Trek cartoon hot on the heels of Lower Decks.
While the Amazon series is low brow, more smutty and irreverent. Prodigy is made for Nickelodeon, part of the Paramount family.
Although aimed at children, it would be appreciated by adults who like their Star Trek to be more traditional and po faced.
Immediately the opening episode never gives you a time and place which does appear to be confusing.
Dal R'El, is a talkative smart Alec young purple guy who know little about his own origins and the others in the prison colony he is in. Not helped by the fact that there is no universal translator so no other prisoners can communicate with each other.
While escaping with a rock creature Rok-Tahk. They find an abandoned Starfleet ship called the USS Protostar. As it has a universal translator, both Dal R'El and Rok-Tahk could talk to each other for the first time.
Having only seen the first episode. I actually began to appreciate Lower Decks more. The animation for Prodigy is better and looks more expensive. The inspiration seems to be the Star Wars animation. I actually do think that the kid audience might feel alienated because it does not so far feel like the Star Trek universe.
