Partly filmed on Osea Island, Essex, England.
Between the two halves (after the 3rd episode), a live-event theatrical episode called "Autumn" will be aired.
Production also filmed in the dramatic landscape of Harty Ferry near the Ferry House Inn. The Inn is an Isolated Grade II listed 16th Century Pub offering accommodation on the edge of the salt marshes overlooking the Swale Estuary. It has moorings and clay pigeon shooting facilities, as well as a restaurant in the converted barns.
Production visited many locations in Kent for filming, including Fog Signal Station at Dungeness, Allens Farm, Harty Ferry, Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, St Clere Estate, Bedgebury National Pinetum Forest, Hever Castle, Quex Park, Grain, Chiddingstone and Shellness Beach.
The series is divided into three overall sections labeled "Summer," "Autumn" and "Winter." "Summer" consists of the first three episodes "The Father," "The Son" and "The Ghost."
The second section, "Autumn," is a 12-hour 'theatrical event' that HBO streamed on their Facebook page, which bridges the gap to part three, "Winter." The third and final part begins with episode 4.
