The stars try to save a familiar slab of sci-fi pondering involving a robotic replacement for a husband, but it’s not enough
In the year 2065, water and fertile land are precious resources. The US midwest, ravaged by heat and drought, is sparsely populated and barren. Also, new technology allows AI to create sentient, indistinguishable copies of humans.
Such are the opening facts, delivered in title cards, of Foe, starring Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan as a married couple conscripted into an off-planet settlement program. The concept sounds like a lesser Black Mirror episode and, indeed, the film never escapes the long shadow of the hit-and-miss UK television series, which triggered a wave of underbaked, easily forgotten sci-fi. (Does anyone remember the AMC series Soulmates?)...

Eight long years after the legendary “Breaking Bad” saga came to a heavenly close, Betsy Brandt graced us with an unexpected appearance as her character Marie Schrader on the series finale of “Better Call Saul.” This AMC prequel is reaching a similar status of its own.
Brandt’s critically lauded, grief-stricken widow absent of her famously favored color purple, made every single second of her screen time count in “Saul Gone.” She delivered a show-stopping, teary-eyed monologue that ranked amongst the highlights of “Saul’s” swan song episode. The ocean of subtext made the moment eternally affecting and fitting. More than fans could have ever hoped for.
Despite “Breaking Bad” garnering a whopping 58 Emmy nominations (16 of them resulted in wins), Brandt somehow never received recognition for her work as Marie. And considering how multiple male actors were able to make the supporting lineup over the years, it seems unjust for...

Soulmates will not be returning for a second season after all. AMC quietly cancelled the drama anthology series late last year. The series premiered on AMC in late 2020 and was renewed for a second season ahead of its launch. The series is set in the near future when a test can tell people who their soulmate is. The show was created by Will Bridges and Brett Goldstein.
First season episodes star Sarah Snook, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Bill Skarsgard, Malin Akerman, Charlie Heaton, and Betsy Brandt. The six-episode season averaged just 198,000 viewers during its linear run, which is one of the reasons why AMC pulled the plug on the drama, per THR.

Bravo’s “Summer House” and E!’s “Nikki Bella Says I Do” both exhibited growth in three-day viewership figures, TheWrap can exclusively report. The NBCUniversal-owned unscripted cable series saw increases in their Season 7 premiere and Season 1 finale, respectively.
“Summer House” — which follows a group of friends who vacation in a shared summer house in Long Island’s Montauk — was up 10% in the 18-49 demographic and 2% in total average viewers, as compared to the Season 6 debut in the total audience measurement index through three days.

AMC is no longer moving forward with a second season of “Soulmates,” TheWrap has learned.
The sci-fi anthology series, which was created by Will Bridges (“Black Mirror”) and Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”) and based on their short film “For Life,” was previously renewed for a second season in August 2020.
“We were immediately drawn to the unique premise of Soulmates as it explores love and relationships from several touchpoints in a way that naturally feeds the zeitgeist, prompting conversations around human connection, relationships and happiness,” Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks’ Entertainment Group and co-president of AMC Studios, said at the time of the renewal. “These are stories and themes that resonate and feel almost timely given today’s climate in which so many of us feel disconnected or are coping with shifting relationship dynamics. We’re thrilled to continue our relationship with Will and Brett who never...

Despite an early renewal for Brett Goldstein and Will Bridges’ sci-fi anthology series Soulmates in 2020, AMC has now reversed its decision, with the show being quietly scrapped last year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to drop the show was made in 2022, with factors including the first season’s disappointing ratings and Goldstein’s busy schedule as a writer and executive producer on Apple’s Shrinking and Ted Lasso, the latter of which he also stars in. Soulmates was set 15 years in the future and revolved around a company that could determine love matches with 100% accuracy. Those matched by the test learn of their soulmate and then have the choice to pursue that person or not. Each self-contained episode explored whether love is destiny or a choice. The six-episode first season premiered on October 5, 2020, and averaged less than 200,000 viewers during its linear run on AMC, according to THR. The...

AMC is splitting up with Soulmates.
The cable network is not moving forward with the planned second season of the anthology series.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news, adding that the decision was made to cancel the series last year.
While AMC has caught a lot of heat for canceling previously renewed shows, the demise of Soulmates is said to be due to scheduling issues.
Brett Goldstein's busy schedule with Ted Lasso and Shrinking are said to have been a part of the reason for the cancellation.
But the show was never a winner in the ratings for the cabler.
THR notes the first season averaged fewer than 200,000 viewers across its initial season in 2020.

Add Soulmates to the list of shows that have been “unrenewed.”
AMC has reversed coursed on the previously announced second season for the sci-fi anthology from creators Will Bridges (Black Mirror) and Emmy winner Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso).
Sources say the decision to cancel the show was made quietly last year with factors including Goldstein’s busy schedule as a writer and exec producer on both Apple’s Shrinking and Ted Lasso, the latter of which he also stars in. Other factors include Soulmates’ lackluster ratings as the six-episode first season averaged less than 200,000 viewers during its linear run on AMC. The series was also available at the launch of AMC+ before making its linear debut a few days later.
AMC renewed Soulmates in August 2020 — two months before its premiere and before Ted Lasso became a breakout hit for Apple, making Goldstein and his surly Roy Kent instant fan favorites.

The world so loves a romantic story. Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, however, will never be a romantic story for the world to love. Despite the fact that they starred in several of Adam Sandler’s hit movies together, they were never a couple, and we cannot help but wonder why the world wanted it so much. Yes, they are both lovely people. Yes, they’re both hilarious, and they do seem to be good people as a whole. However, Adam Sandler is happily married to his wife – and has been since 2003 – and the couple shares two children. Drew

Running Jan. 10-17, Unifrance’s Rendez-Vous in Paris – an export focused market that unites buyers, producers, talent and press from film and television – will fête its 25th edition with a return to pre-pandemic (in-person) attendance numbers, and a once-more ebullient social calendar, rife with the cocktails, awards ceremonies and evening events that fell by the wayside over the past few vintages.
“We’ll have a renewed effervescence,” says Unifrance director of cinema, Gilles Renouard, of this year’s event. “People are finding each other again, [and] our goal was to get back toward a normal edition with our European distributors.”
Indeed, with 87 films brought to market and more than 400 international film distributors present, such figures mark highs unseen since 2019 – with those numbers bolstered by 100 TV buyers, who have come onboard once Unifrance merged with TV France International in 2021, thus creating a one-stop-shop for film and TV promotion.

Les âmes soeurs
For his thirtieth feature film, the great André Téchiné filmed in two seasonal time frames (in June of ’21 and the following winter of southwestern France’s Ariège region) for a drama (or possible melodrama) that sounds nestled in human relations. Formerly known as Les Pieds sur Terre, Téchiné collected Noémie Merlant and Benjamin Voisin who topline with supporting players of Audrey Dana and André Marcon on board. Les âmes soeurs (aka Soul Mates) could make for a strong competition slot bid at the Berlinale before its late March domestic release at home.

Scanners, the 1981 horror cult classic from David Cronenberg, is getting the HBO series treatment.
William Bridges, who won an Emmy for co-writing the “USS Callister” episode of Black Mirror, is acting as writer and showrunner for the series, which is in development, with Yann Demange, who helmed the pilot for HBO’s Lovecraft Country, directing. Both will exec produce.
This project will be a co-production between HBO, Media Res Studio and Wayward Films.
Scanners told of a small group of people with a range of psychic, telepathic and telekinetic powers. One faction of scanners, as these people were labeled, was led by a power-mad man named Revok, played by Michael Ironside, who aims to take over the world, while a private security firm recruits its own scanners to stop him for its own, possibly shady, reasons.
