The second season alarmingly opens with total fantasy
"Mork in Wonderland" signaled the beginning of the end for MORK AND MINDY, too many radical changes in the series to sustain its initial success. Robin Williams was partly to blame, as he wanted Mork to become more sophisticated, when his character's broad appeal was based on his childlike view at the world's foibles. The switch from its cozy Thursday night time slot to Sunday opposite the popular ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE knocked the show out of the Top 5 all the way down to #27, before a return to Thursdays that failed to ignite sagging ratings. New characters replaced Fred and Cora (she only appears in 8 more episodes, one the third season, the other seven the fourth), inexplicably written out at the start of this season, and the writers tried to remake the series as what one critic accurately described as 'THREE'S COMPANY in outer space,' ratcheting up the sexual tension between Mork and Mindy, despite the fact it was already there. The opener was a one hour broadcast, split into two for syndication, with Mork's reaction to antihistamine medication reducing him in size like Grant Williams in the 1957 classic "The Incredible Shrinking Man." Mork calls for a shrink, and Exidor (Robert Donner) drops by for a welcome visit, concluding that Mork isn't shrinking, everyone else is getting bigger! Even an emergency call to Orson cannot prevent him from shrinking to microscopic size for the second chapter of this oddity. The special effects are variable but serve their purpose.
