For three years, Doris has planned a vacation to Mexico City, and every time she has been ready to go, something always kiboshes her trip. Indeed, Cy, this time, has volunteered her to take over organizing a charity ball in place of the committee comprised of Colonel Fairburn's scatterbrained sister Harriett, the chair, and her equally scatterbrained friends - "the girls" - Doris unable to say no to the Colonel, with Cy promising her an extra week vacation after it's all over. Doris discovers that they have hired an event planner, Roger Sidney, he only needing someone in authority proverbially to sign checks, that person being Doris. With Roger working harder than he planned, Doris looks as if she will be able to head off to Mexico City earlier than planned, with Roger even giving all the praise to Doris to an elated Colonel. But the praise for doing nothing gets Doris thinking that they are all in the process of being had by a scam artist unless she does something to stop it.
