Ice Cube might have started out in the world of music. But the rapper has also become quit the established actor over the years, appearing in more than two dozen movies. In fact, Ice Cube reportedly carries a net worth of $160 million. However, early on, the rapper never thought he had a chance at landing a role in his film debut, the Oscar-nominated drama Boyz n the Hood.
‘Boyz n the Hood’ was Ice Cube’s first major breakthrough movie
The 1995 film Friday arguably established Ice Cube as a big-screen leading man. After all, he carried top billing on that hit comedy, which also catapulted Chris Tucker to stardom. And since then, he’s appeared in countless hits, including two Friday sequels, the Barbershop franchise, 21 Jump Street and its sequel, Ride Along and its sequel, and most recently, 2020’s The High Note.
But 1991’s Boyz n the Hood was something special.

Netflix is ringing in the new year in atypical fashion. Throughout 2021, the streaming giant’s original offerings swelled while its library titles shrunk. With its list of new releases for January 2022, however, Netflix is expanding its non-original market quite a bit.
Jan. 1 sees the arrival of a truly stunning amount of impressive non-Netflix movies and TV shows. The big titles available on the first of the month include: 300, Interview with the Vampire, Paranormal Activity, Superman Returns, Terminator 2, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and much more. Later on in the month, Netflix is also set to add Phantom Thread (Jan. 16) to its roster.

David E. Talbert Developing Musical Series ‘Madelyn Square Gardens’ For Disney Branded Entertainment
Following the success of his Netflix musical film Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, playwright and filmmaker David E. Talbert has been tapped to develop a musical series for Disney Branded Television. The series, Madelyn Square Gardens, marks the first development project announced since Ayo Davis was elevated to president of the division.
Madelyn Square Gardens tells the story of a young woman named Madelyn as she moves to New York from Mississippi, thinking her dreams of being on Broadway are about to come true. But she soon discovers that she will need more than raw talent to beat out the competition at her elite performing arts school. She will also set off on an unexpected journey that will reveal why her grandfather ran off to New York City with his own Broadway ambitions, never returning home.
Talbert, alongside his wife and partner Lyn Sisson-Talbert, will produce through their Golden Alchemy Entertainment banner.

Writer-director David E. Talbert’s new film, “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” is a Netflix musical set in the vibrant fictional town of Cobbleton, and follows renowned toymaker Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker) whose whimsical inventions are wondrous. But when his apprentice (Keegan-Michael Key) steals his most prized creation, it’s up to his precocious granddaughter (Madalen Mills) to retrieve all that has been lost. Twenty-two years in the making, it’s an ambitious spectacle that’s unlike anything Talbert — whose previous film credits include dramedies “First Sunday” (2008), “Baggage Claim,” and “Almost Christmas” — has ever done before.

Exclusive: Grey’s Anatomy alumna Loretta Devine is set to recur opposite Brandee Evans and Nicco Annan in Starz’s P-Valley, Katori Hall’s strip club drama based on her play Pussy Valley.
Created by Hall, who also showruns, the drama is set down deep in the Mississippi Delta, where lies an oasis of grit and glitter in a rough patch of human existence where beauty can be hard to find. The Southern-fried hourlong drama tells the kaleidoscopic story of a little-strip-club-that-could and the big characters who come through its doors: the hopeful, the lost, the broken, the ballers, the beautiful, and the damned. Trap music meets film noir in this lyrical and atmospheric series that dares to ask what happens when small-town folk dream beyond the boundaries of the Piggly Wiggly and the pawn shop.
Devine will play the Granmuva of Uncle Clifford and former proprietress of The Pynk.

It seems like every year some studio releases a harmless yet predictable holiday comedy centering on an ensemble cast of recognizable actors (usually as disparate members of a family) in an effort to capitalize on the “most wonderful time of the year.” Films like last year’s Love the Coopers and Christmas with the Kranks are smart investments for production companies because of their broad appeal and moderate budgets. So, naturally, 2016 isn’t without its own edition of this reliable trend. Fans of those films should then be quite pleased with this year’s model: Almost Christmas.

It’s almost Christmas so, fittingly, family holiday films trim our multiplexes and fill our stockings. First out of the gate this year is the creatively titled dramedy Almost Christmas, a well-intentioned but at times lackluster foray into five days in the life of a particularly effusive family.
Danny Glover’s Wayne Meyers is the patriarch at the center of the story, and he is surrounded by four children and some of their spouses, and the array of rivalries, dreams, and regrets that they bring to the dinner table. The family losses the mother figure at the open, and she casts a pall across them—in ways good and sad—throughout the movie and the Holiday season.
There is tenderness in the premise, which carries through symbolically as the family has misplaced the absent mother’s cooking recipes and is figuratively and literally lost without them. Along the journey, which...

Looking ahead to the movies heading to cinemas in time for Christmas...
The festive season is a great time to go to the pictures. There’s nothing quite like taking solace when it’s cold outside by cramming in with some like-minded folk to see a (hopefully) great movie.
Unsurprisingly, Hollywood studios have cottoned on to this. Year on year, there seems to more and more choice at the cinema come Christmas time. It’s almost like a second summer season, in terms of the sheer volume of major movies on offer. This isn’t likely to change any time soon, especially when you look at the cash banked by Star Wars: The Force Awakens last Christmas. And that's not to mention the festive season's nearness to the Oscar race, which means that the major movies keep coming well into January.

When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. Ken Kwapis’s Sundance comedy “A Walk in the Woods” starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte managed $30 million, but that couldn’t counterbalance films like Ramin Bahrani’s well-reviewed real estate thriller “99 Homes” ($1.7 million domestic) and Sarah Silverman’s depressive drama “I Smile Back” ($58K). Now, the...

Reynaldo Rey was born to make people laugh. The veteran entertainer, who spent years opening for Redd Foxx and then became best known for playing the father of one of Ice Cube's bumbling pals in Friday, died Thursday morning, EW.com reports. He was 75. Per TMZ, which was first with the sad news, Rey passed away at a Los Angeles hospital where he was being treated for complications of a stroke he suffered last year. Rey stole his scenes as the nameless dad of DJ Pooh's Red ("Red's father" was the part) in the hit 1995 comedy Friday and he would reunite with Ice Cube later in 2008's First Sunday. The Oklahoma-born comedian's big-screen credits also included White Men...

Oscars buzz boosts UK box office and whether growling on a plane or voicing an animation, it's Liam Neeson's moment
• Review of The Lego Movie
• Review of Non-Stop
• More on the UK box office
The winner
Adding another £4.79m in the past seven days, The Lego Movie now stands at a sturdy £26.67m after three weeks of play. That puts it level with the lifetime tallies of blockbusters including Spider-Man 2 (£26.72m) and Ocean's Eleven (£26.47m), and ahead of fellow animations including Ratatouille (£24.80m) and Wall-e (£22.91m). The Lego Movie will pretty soon overtake the likes of Shrek (£29m) and A Bug's Life (£29.45m) and is clearly headed into the mid-30s (£m).
Although box office for The Lego Movie is certainly skewed to the weekend, its decent performance in the Monday-to-Thursday period suggests that it is picking up a true adult audience, rather than merely adult chaperones of children.

Box Office Predictions: 'Jack Ryan', 'Ride Along', 'Devil's Due' and 'Nut Job' Battle Oscar Nominees
I'm a little pressed for time this morning so today's write-up will be a little abbreviated, so let's quickly take a look at the weekend's new releases. Ride Along starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube is my pick at number one as I'm going with a flat $20 million for the three-day weekend, with First Sunday as my comparison. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit isn't very good, but it's being advertised everywhere and I know more than one person that told me they wanted to see it. $18 million is my number, though I could end up being high. The Nut Job is one of the worst animated films in ages, truly awful, but that won't keep everyone away. I'm giving it $9.6 million based on being a family film alone, those poor kids. Lastly, the unscreened horror, Devil's Due. This is the time of year for horror to scoop up, but Devil's Due is barely on anyone's radar,...

When David E. Talbert entered the editing room after shooting his debut movie, “First Sunday,” he realized he had a lot to learn about how to direct a movie. Talbert came to Hollywood from the world of theater, where he is widely respected as a playwright and director. Yet while theater directors rely on what they see with their eyes, movie directors rely on the varied perspectives a camera offers. So before he made his second movie, “Baggage Claim,” he took a crash course in romantic comedies with fellow directors Tim Story and Bill Duke. He also listened in on his.

Even though he's currently deep in post-production with his latest film, the rom-com Baggage Claim, with Paula Patton, Djimon Hounsou, Taye Diggs and Derek Luke, writer/director David Talbert (First Sunday) already has his next film project all set. Talbert will write and direct the feature film Preacher's Son for the L.A. based, newly created, independent film and television production company Ironic Prods. The story deals with a young man, who, due to certain circumstances, is forced to steal $200,000 from his father's church. He then, in turn, sets out on a series of bank robberies to get back the money before anyone at the church notices. Of course complications...

Since playing the part of Seth Cohen in Fox's drama series The O.C., Adam Brody has gone on to dabble in feature work, playing a number of roles, including Nikolai, the murderous lead singer in Jennifer's Body, and Deputy Hoss in Scream 4. He has a few projects in the works, among which are Lovelace and Fox Searchlight's romantic comedy Baggage Claim, in which he was recently cast. Written, directed and produced by First Sunday's David E. Talbert, Baggage Claim is based on Talbert's novel and stars Paula Patton as a single flight attendant who's determined to find herself a man as her little sister's wedding approaches. Derek Luke is already on board to play Patton's close friend and possible love interest. And according to Variety, Brody has been cast to play the part of the other male lead, described as "a flamboyant flight attendant who works alongside Patton...

You may recognize Katt Williams as the strikingly irritating presence that kept you from watching films like Norbit and First Sunday (or you may love him; the guy clearly has his fans). As much as I try to remain impartial, I really can't in this case; I find him really annoying, and being exposed to him for an hour straight only multiplied the feeling. While comedy is perhaps more subjective than any other form, it would be difficult to argue that Williams’s style is anything but loud, aggressive, and unremitting in profanity. Should this appeal to you, you may well enjoy Kattpacalypse. If not, it sure won’t change that.

Derek Luke Goes to ‘Baggage Claim’ With Paula Patton; Angela Bassett Takes ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ Role
Well, this is one charming onscreen pairing. Variety reports that Derek Luke (Captain America, Seeking a Friend) will play yin to the yang that is Paula Patton (Ghotocol) in Baggage Claim, a romantic comedy from David Talbert (First Sunday). The lattermost of those three is adapting his own novel, wherein Montana Moore — a 35-year-old flight attendant who’s also the only single woman in her family — “becomes determined to find a man in 30 days” when her sister’s wedding starts to loom larger and larger.
Luke‘s character, being both a good friend and (look at that) her own neighbor, presumably becomes Montana’s best line of defense against the pending terror that is the prospect of being both 4o and single. (That’s what I’d guess, having a) not read the book, b) being given a lot from Variety’s story, and c) having seen enough movies of this type to basically “know.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I always wonder if David E. Talbert is always kicking himself for letting Tyler Perry beat him to the punch. Now, keep in mind that I have No proof of this. It's just pure speculation; but if I were Talbert i would be. What I mean is that Talbert was in the game long before Perry, being very successful and becoming very rich with his "urban" theater plays tours aimed at black audiences across the country. But Perry got to the movies and TV first before Talbert, who, so far, has just one feature film to his credit - First Sunday - which I thought was a pretty decent, well made film that actually looked...

Coming off her action role in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Deadline reports that Paula Patton has signed on to headline Baggage Claim, David Talbert’s adaptation of his own 2003 novel. Patton will play Montana Moore, a 35-year-old flight attendant who runs the risk of being the only woman in her family to not be married (Gasp!). Not wanting to show up to her younger sister’s engagement party alone, she decides to go on a 30,000 mile trek around the world to find herself a man. Baggage Claim begins production in September and will mark Talbert’s second time behind the camera, his first being 2006′s First Sunday starring Ice Cube and Katt Williams.

Exclusive: Fox Searchlight has set Paula Patton to star in Baggage Claim, a comedy that David Talbert has adapted and will direct from his bestselling 2003 novel. Patton will play flight attendant Montana Moore, who at 35 is the oldest woman in her family not married. With her sister tying the knot, Montana and her fellow flight attendants become determined to put a claim check on a husband in 30 days or 30,000 miles. The film will shoot in September and it will be Talbert’s second time behind the camera. He wrote and directed First Sunday for Screen Gems, which was based on his play. Talbert is an underrated resource at a time when urban-themed films are in high demand after the success of Think Like A Man. Like Tyler Perry, Talbert developed a following in the black community by writing and touring his plays, the most recent of which was What My Husband Doesn’t Know,...

If you'd never seen a Tyler Perry film, and the only thing you knew about Tyler Perry was what you read here on Pajiba, you'd probably be disappointed in what you saw. You'd be disappointed because you didn't explode during the screening or walk out with a head full of flames. Tyler Perry's films are bad, and they highlight the worst of African-American stereotypes, but there are worse films. To be honest, even among so-called "urban" films, I'd rather watch a Tyler Perry film than movies like The Cookout, First Sunday, The Lottery Ticket, or almost anything that features supporting roles by Keith David, Tommy Davidson, Katt Williams, or Eddie Griffin. Now, Eddie Griffin -- that guy makes some seriously shitty films. In fact, as bad as Tyler Perry's movies might be, the experience can often be uplifting -- not because of the movie itself, but because of his audience,...
