In The Hitcher, Jim (C. Thomas Howell) picks up a hitchhiker named John Ryder (Rutger Hauer) while transporting a car from Chicago to San Diego. After quickly showing Jim his murderous ways, John is kicked out of the car and begins a relentless pursuit of Jim, murdering anyone who gets in his way and framing Jim for the murders. How do you know when a movie’s going to suck? When there’s a tie-in album full of previously released songs that aren’t in the film.
Corporations love soundtrack albums – they’re easy to compile, they’re usually best sellers and, best of all, they promote the movie. Which is all they’re meant to do.
In the 1980s, corporations started swallowing up movie studios and linking their products with the book, TV and music companies they already owned, beginning the practice known as “Synergy.” Saturation advertising in corporate-owned magazines and on TV shows had one message – see the movie, read the book, buy the soundtrack.
Synergy obeys a simple formula: obtain content, gather an audience then sit back and watch the cash roll in. It also reduces movies to little more than the filmed equivalent of the Happy Meal, but that is by the by.

According to William Goldman, who won Oscars for writing Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and All The President’s Men, there are three types of movies: those that aspire to quality and succeed, those that aspire to quality and fail, and those that were never meant to be any good at all.
The last group, Goldman claims, comprises “movies for which the pulse was either totally or primarily financial: rip-offs, spin-offs, sequels etc.” In other words, most of today’s pictures are about as creative and well intentioned as Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.
Executives that talk about rebooting this or reimagining that sound like Eskimos describing snow, using multiple words to describe the same thing. In the end, they only require two – ‘cash’ and ‘grab’.

American Sniper easily led the box office for the third weekend in a row, while the three new wide releases flopped with less than $18 million combined.American Sniper added $30.7 million, which fell just shy of a new record for Super Bowl weekend behind Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour ($31.1 million). Unfortunately, it was off 53 percent from last weekend, which suggests that the intense interest surrounding the movie has cooled off quite a bit. Still, that $30.7 million ranks 21st all-time among third weekends, and that's with a hand tied behind its back thanks to the Super Bowl.To date, American Sniper has earned $247.8 million, which ranks sixth among 2014 releases. It could still wind up becoming the highest-grossing movie from 2014 ahead of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay*Part 1, though that no longer seems guaranteed.Playing at 2,893 locations, Project Almanac flopped with $8.3 million. That's the second worst debut...

For the third weekend in a row, American Sniper is going to easily take the top spot at the box office. Even with the Super Bowl monopolizing attention on Sunday, Sniper should still easily add at least $30 million over the three-day period.Among the weekend's new releases, found footage time travel movie Project Almanac should provide decent counterprogramming for teen moviegoers, while Black or White and The Loft will be lucky to earn a combined $10 million.Through 13 days in wide release, American Sniper has already earned $213.4 million. This weekend, it expands to an additional 180 locations, which brings its total count to 3,885; that's a new record for an R-rated movie, ahead of the record that Sniper set last weekend. On fantastic word-of-mouth, the movie dropped a very light 28 percent last weekend. With tough competition from the Super Bowl on Sunday, a similar drop this weekend is out of the question. Still,...

After the Paramount logo appears on screen, the Nickelodeon logo is the next thing you see. After that, you see the one for Platinum Dunes, the production company owned by Michael Bay and responsible for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hitcher, and the Friday the 13th remakes. As is true of the famous Disney castle logo or the scrolling comic book logo of the Marvel movies, these logo carries a certain amount of expectations of quality (or lack thereof) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lives up to the mediocre expectations set by the Platinum Dunes and Nickelodeon brands.

The good news is, that a “prequel” to Cabin Fever is hitting VOD outlets in less than a month. The bad news is, Cabin Fever 2 left such a bad taste in some viewers’ mouths, that I have no idea if there is even any public interest in such a thing. I was one of the ones that was initially shocked by the badness of Cabin Fever 2, because it had a young but strong cast, and one of my favorite up-and-coming directors attached to the project. If at first you don’t succeed… There have been twelve films in the “Friday The 13th” franchise thus far. You know what Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes horror shingle did in 2009? They acquired rights to the series (like they have with horror franchises “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “A Nightmare On Elm Street,” “The Hitcher”) and basically hit reset, rebooting the series with “Friday The 13th” directed by Bay-reboot favorite Marcus Nispel (who helmed the “Conan the Barbarian” reboot for Millennium). What are they doing in 2014? A rebooting “Friday The 13th” yet again because their first attempt only grossed $65 million domestically with a worldwide gross of $91 million. Apparently that figure off a $19 million budget was just not enough profit. And so David Bruckner, who wrote and directed the “Amateur Night” segment of “V/H/S,” is in negotiations to direct, according to The Wrap. And it’s already dated for Friday,...

McGinn stars in the film, which he also produced alongside Murphy Michaels and executive producer and Deep Studios founder Ken Bretschneider, and it was written by Adam Ohler.
Spooky! And just in time for Halloween.
The film is inspired by true-events and unexplainable phenomena surrounding Skinwalker Ranch (www.skinwalkerranch.org) in Ne Utah, which was shown a few years ago on Jesse Ventura’s ‘Conspiracy Theory’ and most recently ‘Joe Rogan Questions Everything’ on SyFy.
In 2010 “Skinwalker Ranch” gained media attention after experiencing a wide range of unexplained phenomena.

Another day, another remake. This time it's Jacob's Ladder, the psychological horror-thriller from 1990 starring Tim Robbins. THR posted news on development of a new Jacob's Ladder project that at the least has a screenplay and financiers involved, but no director yet. Mickey Liddell's Ld Entertainment (Killer Joe, Black Rock, Disconnect, The Collection) is financing the remake, which comes with a script from Jeff Buhler (Insanitarium, The Midnight Meat Train) who is revising an early draft penned by Jake Wade Wall (When a Stranger Calls, The Hitcher). Let's hope they can turn out something edgy and unique that will impress us. The original Jacob's Ladder was directed by Adrian Lyne, from a screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin. The story centers around Vietnam veteran Jacob Singer, whose experiences both prior to and during the war have resulted in strange flashbacks and bizarre hallucinations that continue to haunt him in his everyday life.

Last week we told you that the rights to Friday the 13th were back at Paramount. Old school Jason fans rejoiced and there was much celebration in the land (in my house, at least). Today the plot thickens, somewhat unsurprisingly.
My friend over at Bloody Disgusting, Evan Dickson, got a scoop yesterday straight from recent Jason actor Derek Mears' mouth regarding Platinum Dunes' involvement in the upcoming Friday the 13th sequel:
“I spoke to Brad Fuller and he said that the rights are, as everyone knows, over at Paramount and they’re pushing hard. They’re going 'we want [a new Friday The 13th movie] as fast as possible.'” Mears would also return to the hockey mask, if asked. “…I know they [Platinum Dunes] like me...look, even if I’m not a part of the series, as a fan, I just want to see more.” Fans were greatly divided over the last film in the franchise,...

"The Purge" opens this weekend and is already poised to become one of the most unexpected hits of the year. Made on a budget of just $3 million, the movie earned that much at the box office in midnight shows Thursday (June 6) night. But critics have justifiably torn it to pieces.
Set in the year 2022, "The Purge" takes place in an idyllic future USA where crime and unemployment barely exist. The government tells citizens this is because of the annual "purge" -- a 12-hour period that happens once every year where any crime is legal, including murder. There are only two rules: weapons can't go above a certain level (presumably no nuclear bombs, etc.) and government officials are off limits. Otherwise, all Us citizens can do whatever they want to get all their anger, frustrations and hostility out... and then bottle it all up until the next purge.

You know we were just thinking to ourselves the other day... "You know what we need? We need Cabin Fever: Patient Zero to reboot the franchise and kick off a new trilogy!" Okay, so we weren't actually thinking that but apparently Voltage Pictures is.
Screen Daily reports that Voltage is handling Cabin Fever sales at Cannes, along with the original film's producer Evan Astrowsky, and they're developing at least two more films in addition to Patient Zero to create a new trilogy. Hooray!
Sean Astin and Brano Eaton are starring in the pic, which also has Jillian Murray and Ryan Donowho as part of the cast. Mitch Ryan, meanwhile, has stepped into the shoes vacated by Ben Hollingsworth, whose schedule was crunched when he booked a role on The CW’s midseason show "Cult".

They haven’t released a film above a 38 on Metacritic or 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, with averages at 32 and 20% respectively. Practically every 80s horror fan detests them almost as much as critics do. With every remake they churn out, controversy is stirred and concerns are raised. These are then proven rightfully so, as Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company release another pitifully dire film.
Platinum Dunes was started back in 2001 by Bay and fellow film-makers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. They soon set out on their path of destruction, acquiring the rights to their first victim: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. The film was a box office success due to relentlessly heavy and meticulously planned advertising, but the film itself put to shame the masterful original and even the prior sequels that it was following. But besides being an all round terrible film, it started a new trend, one that...

The decade following The Lord of the Rings trilogy has been a somewhat challenging one for Sean Astin. The former star of The Goonies and Rudy had a part in season 5 of 24 and also did a fair amount of voice acting work, but has not been able to land many roles in high-profile A-list projects. Instead, he has chosen to star in some low budget genre films, a move that is becoming more and more respectable nowadays as direct-to-video slowly gets replaced by video-on-demand. Now he will headline his most prominent genre flick yet, a prequel to Eli Roth's Cabin Fever called Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. The film is being directed by comic book artist Kaare Andrews from a screenplay by Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher). According to THR, Astin will join Brando Eaton (Balls Out: The Gary Houseman Story) and Ben Hollingsworth (The Joneses) in the horror film,...

Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin is set to star in a reboot of Eli Roth's Cabin Fever for Indomina, which seems like one of the most pointless reboots in the history of film. I can see why studios would want to reboot some movies, whether I like the idea or hate it, I can see why. But a reboot of Cabin Fever??? What in the hell is the point?

“When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable.”

Michael Bay then responded to the feedback on his official site with the following:

Could the next Halloween movie come from the house of the horror remake, Platinum Dunes?
Here’s a story we were a bit wary of posting, given the day that it broke (April 1st). But from what we can ascertain, there’s actually something to this.
It’s basically about the future of the Halloween franchise. A reboot had begun, under the stewardship of Rob Zombie, and we were two films down the line, as you probably know. The plan was then for Halloween 3D to be released in cinemas this year. Only The Weinstein Company (through its Dimension Films arm) pulled the film from its schedules, and that seemed to be that for the time being.
However, Bloody Disgusting has reported that Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes company is in talks to take over producing the Halloween movies, picking up the reins from the Weinsteins. As part and parcel of this,...

For fans of the 2002 cult horror hit Cabin Fever, two things are for sure: never thinking about the word “pancakes” in the same way again, and preparing for a disappointing franchise. A few years after its less satisfying sequel Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, those expectations will be tested with not one, but two prequels.
Cabin Fever: Patient Zero and its follow-up, Cabin Fever: Outbreak, reveal the origins of the virus that plagues unsuspecting campers in director Eli Roth’s original movie. Both films will be shot back-to-back, with scribe Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher) writing Patient Zero, and screenwriting team Adam and Deborah Marcus taking on Outbreak.
Filmed on location in the Dominican Republic, Patient Zero will introduce the disease to some cruise ship passengers stranded on a research island in the Caribbean, an appropriate premise considering the recent cruise ship mishaps going on in the news lately – kudos...

Everybody remembers the 2002 horror film Cabin Fever; it was the movie that made you fall either in love or hate with Eli Roth. And it was a movie about a bunch of kids in a cabin who get stricken with a very violent and rapidly spreading flesh-eating virus. That’s all well and good, but have you ever felt like the original Cabin Fever was just scratching the surface of what the disease-ridden world it created had to offer? No? Well, somebody did, and that’s why there’s a prequel in the works. Sure, watching a bunch of attractive young people get eaten alive by a gruesome disease is fun times, but haven’t you ever wondered what really made that virus tick? Where did it come from, and what was its motivation? Jake Wade Wall (The Hitcher) has written a script entitled Cabin in the Woods: Patient Zero that’s sure to answer all of...
