I wish I remembered it better!

I was ~10 when this was on, but remembered only the 1st two lines of Billy Bean's song as found on other web sites. I had not remembered the bird either, but the egg rolling down a to-and-fro incline sounds familiar. So many live shows are no longer available since no-one had recording equipment!

A long, long, time ago ...

Since I was only six years old at the time this was on, my memory of it is necessarily sketchy. Basically, some kind of bird, perhaps a cuckoo that emerged from a clock, laid an egg which rolled down an incline and set in motion the "Funny Machine". After various weird and amusing mechanical goings-on, the machine produced - what? I can't recall. This was on the BBC around 5pm in the afternoon, although I might be wrong on that too. Anyway it was possibly better than Bill & Ben The Flowerpot Men. Belongs in the category of "the beginnings of British TV". I watched this on my parents' TV, a 9 inch Bush, we had the typical H aerial on the roof. Just wonderful.

I too remember the show. I was 9 when my parents bought a tv to watch the coronation in 1953. I found Billy Bean facinating. The mechanical mechanism that worked as that egg roller was wonderful to watch and as I was interested in finding out how stuff worked it appealed to me. Most of the action was technical based, I remember tv tech jargon of the time being used or I should say misused, like cartoonerator. Theme tune/song "he built it out of bits of string and nuts and bolts and glue". It is such a pity that recording was not possible in those days. How would I find out if any link film was ever made ??
