Skydance Animation is getting into business with Oscar-winning filmmaker Don Hall.
Hall, known for such Disney movies as Big Hero 6 and the original Moana, has closed a deal with the company. The pact will see him create, develop and produce an original animated feature for Skydance, although project details are not currently available.
The filmmaker launched his career with Walt Disney Animation Studios, where he worked on such features as Tarzan (1999), The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) and Chicken Little (2005). Later, he was credited as head of story on Meet the Robinsons (2007) and The Princess and the Frog (2009) before directing the animated musical movie Winnie the Pooh (2011).
Hall directed the 2014 Disney film Big Hero 6, in addition to serving as executive producer for its Disney+ spinoff series Baymax! He earned an Oscar alongside fellow director Chris Williams and producer Roy Conli when the title prevailed for best animated feature at the 2015 Academy Awards ceremony.

Teyonah Parris has come out in support of her first Marvel Cinematic Universe outing, The Marvels, which has currently landed on Disney+. The film had a very tumultuous run at the box office, being Marvel’s first proper financial dud in theatres, grossing $199.7 million worldwide (according to The Numbers) against a budget of $270 million.
Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in a still from The Marvels
Parris has come out to say that the film, which is currently streaming, should at least be given a chance by fans. However, despite earning a significant amount at the box office (while not breaking even) the film was worse received than the lowest-grossing Dceu film, which failed to even make what the Brie Larson project made.

Veteran celebrities being unable to promote their latest projects during the strike was one thing. Xolo Maridueña dutifully staying out of the limelight was another level of sacrifice. The 22-year-old Cobra Kai actor landed the breakout role of a lifetime when he was cast as the lead of DC Films’ Blue Beetle, becoming the first Latino to be the star of a live-action superhero film. Not only did he miss a tidal wave of personal publicity opportunities for the Aug. 18 release but also the chance to represent Latinos in a uniquely visible way that, to hear him tell it, was just as important, if not more so. As Maridueña said to THR last year: “Blue Beetle isn’t to make me the next heartthrob or biggest star. It’s to show people, ‘Hey, these stories about Latinos don’t have to just be about narcos or crossing the border or being a gang member.

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. From the innocence of their early work to what many consider their heyday in the early 90’s to the emergence of the CGI era. For many of us, Disney films defined our youth, but which is the one that has remained with you all these years? As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, please click “Other” and let us know what it is in the comments section as well as any fond memories you have of these timeless classics.

This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.
At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”
A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.
The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

Blue Beetle came out late in the summer as the actors’ strike took place. While the film’s star, Xolo Maridueña, has been able to have some of his pre-strike comments about the film come out during the promotional period, the Cobra Kai star was not able to do any press for the DC movie or talk about it in any way on any venue. However, earlier in the summer, when the hype for the new Dcu movie started to build, Maridueña and the film’s director, Angel Manuel Soto, were able to share just how personal and important this movie was for them as it was a superhero story with a prominent Latin representation that made them very proud and emotional.
Now that the strike has subsided, Maridueña has taken to his social media to finally speak in depth about Blue Beetle. According to Deadline, Maridueña shared a series...

From Warner Bros. Pictures comes the feature film Blue Beetle, marking the DC Super Hero’s first time on the big screen. The film, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, stars Xolo Maridueña in the title role as well as his alter ego, Jaime Reyes.
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.
Soto directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (“Miss Bala”), based on characters from DC.

Keith Giffen, the veteran comics author and artist who co-created characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.
Giffen’s family announced his death on Facebook Wednesday via a sardonic post pre-written by the comic book writer-artist: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thankx,’ adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”
His death was affirmed by longtime collaborator Paul Levitz. “The sad news is now official: Keith Giffen has gone off to create new worlds that are beyond our living reach,” Levitz wrote on Facebook. “Keith was probably the most fertile creative mind of our generation in comics. He had an infinite number of ideas, pouring constantly out.”

“Barbie” (Warner Bros.), the year’s biggest hit, had some competition its third week out on PVOD (for rent at $24.99), and it’s coming from within its own house.
“Blue Beetle,” from Warners’ DC Comics division, actually took #1 at Vudu — even more impressive since it ranks by revenue, putting the $19.99 “Beetle” at a disadvantage. It placed #3 at Google Play, which often is slower to note new releases. “Barbie” remains #1 at iTunes and Google Play.
Three other new titles debuted this week, led by “Gran Turismo” (Sony), as high as #2 at Vudu. Also at $19.99, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” (Focus) also placed on two charts. It’s #4 at Vudu after its third weekend in theaters.
“Muzzle” (Rlj), a direct-to-home release landed at #6 at iTunes at a $6.99 rental. Taking the “John Wick” plot about a man seeking revenge after his dog is killed, this stars Stephen Lang and Aaron Eckhardt.

Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.

The Walt Disney Company is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a hefty new Blu-ray box set containing 100 of its best animated films.
Officially titled the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, the box set comes with three volumes that open up to feature the original theatrical artwork for each film. Additionally, the package offers digital codes to all 100 movies, a certificate of authenticity, a lithograph from the upcoming feature Wish, and a collectible set of crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with “Disney 100.”
Drawing films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and the now-closed DisneyToon Studios, the collection offers a pretty comprehensive timeline of the company, founded in 1923. The box set features early classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan, 1990s renaissance films like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Toy Story, and more modern offerings — many of which got the direct-to-Disney+ treatment thanks to Covid — including Soul,...

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Sure, the studio showed some footage from Disney's upcoming animated movie "Wish," and they announced that "Haunted Mansion" would be hitting Disney+ in October. But there was one other announcement that might be intriguing for anyone who is both a Disney fan and a physical media collector.
This fall, the House of Mouse will be releasing the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, which collects 100 animated films from both Disney and Pixar, reaching as far back as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and up through this summer's "Elemental" from Pixar. All of the movies come in a big three-volume set that unfolds in collectible storybooks. The Disney100 Blu-ray box set also includes the original theatrical poster art for every movie within the storybook,...

Disney just announced the release of the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. It’s packaged together as a three-volume set that unfolds into your own storybook.
The set is festooned with original poster designs and comes with digital codes for every movie, alongside a lithograph from Disney’s upcoming feature “Wish,” a certificate of authenticity and crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with the “Disney 100” logo. The limited-edition collection will be available on Nov. 14, with pre-orders beginning on Walmart.com on Sept. 18. It has a retail price of $1,500.
What’s fascinating about the set is that it includes a wide array of classic Walt Disney Animation Studios features, along with beloved Pixar favorites and a smattering of films (many of them direct-to-video sequels to earlier masterworks) created by the since-shuttered DisneyToon Studios. That includes “Tinker Bell,” “Return to Neverland,” “The...

DC's latest film Blue Beetle got off to a slow start at the box office, but will it ultimately make money for Warner Bros. (WB)?
Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and starring Xolo Maridueña, Blue Beetle opened to just $18 million internationally, the worst international opening weekend in Dceu history.
However, the film was reviewed reasonably well, earning a 78% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and giving itself a decent chance to draw more audiences to theaters.

The huge success of "Aladdin," particularly the success of Robin Williams' performance as the Genie, changed everything for American animation. Disney started using more and more celebrities in its voice casts until the art of voice acting became something big-name actors would talk about as being an "easy" gig they could do in their pajamas in a short few days, while studios turned stunt casting into a marketing ploy that hurts the movies themselves.
While we most commonly associate this practice with American voice casts, in reality, Disney does this abroad too — with A-list actors and celebrities doing voices in international dubs for their movies. One such actor who has done dubbing for a Disney movie is Jackie Chan, the legendary action star and physical comedian. Chan has also had a long and prolific career in animation (he even had his own animated series!), playing characters in "Kung Fu Panda,...

Monday Update: It looks like Denzel Washington can now lay claim to having the 2nd biggest Labor Day box office debut, with The Equalizer 3 shooting up an estimated $42 million over the long weekend. Not bad at all if you consider that Denzel hasn’t been able to market the film due to the strike. It’s the best opening a movie’s posted since Barbenheimer, and seems likely to be the biggest until, coincidently, Denzel’s son John David Washington, opens his own potential blockbuster, The Creator, later this month.
Original Post:
Denzel Washington returned to theaters this weekend with his first ever threequel, The Equalizer 3, which saw an opening weekend of $34.5 million and a 4-day expected to hit $42 million, slightly above where we predicted it on Thursday. That number securely makes it the second highest grossing Labor Day release of all time behind Marvel’s Shang-Chi and...

Denzel Washington once again proves his movie star status as his Equalizer 3 is currently looking at a solid $35-$37 million weekend, with around $43 million 4-day take, which falls perfectly in line with our predictions from Thursday. That number will put it squarely in the number two spot for the Labor Day holiday, pulling ahead of Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of Halloween which opened with $30.5 million and behind Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ $94.6 million in 2021.
The thing I didn’t realize going in to this weekend is that this is the first fully theatrical movie Denzel has starred in since the last Equalizer film hit theaters in 2018. He would take time to star in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway for which he would earn rave reviews and a Tony Nomination. In 2021 Washington had three movies released: The Little Things, which is an excellent throwback thriller starring Washington,...

It’s been a week since ‘Blue Beetle,’ the newest DC movie, opened in theaters, and judging by the first weekend only, WB and DC Studios are listing this as their fourth DC flop in a row. 2022’s ‘The Batman’ remains the latest commercially successful DC movie, and it looks like it’s going to stay like that for a while now.
Despite the fact that ‘Blue Beetle’ is still very early in its theatrical run, grossing a little over $40 million worldwide for the opening weekend is already enough to call it a flop, particularly because ‘The Flash,’ another commercial disappointment for DC one and of the biggest box-office flops in history, grossed $139 million in its opening weekend.
At this point, the future of Xolo Maridueña as the Blue Beetle, despite the fact that he was born to play this role, is very uncertain, regardless of James Gunn’s promises about his future in Dcu,...

This post contains spoilers for Blue Beetle.
Even ten years ago, few would have guessed that the Blue Beetle would be in a movie, let alone the star of one. Both the current Blue Beetle Jamie Reyes and his predecessor Ted Kord have been fan favorites since the 80s, when the latter became a member of Justice League International. But Blue Beetle is hardly the only DC Comics deep cut in the film.
Throughout the movie, the villainous Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) touts her company’s newest invention, a battle suit termed Omac, which stands for One Man Army Corps. Created by Jack Kirby during his time at DC Comics in the 1970s, Omac is one of the legendary artist’s strangest characters, someone who has been radically reimagined several times since his first appearance.
Omac made his debut in 1974’s Omac #1, written and penciled by Kirby, with letters and inks by Mike Royer.

[This story contains spoilers for Blue Beetle.]
Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto is hopeful about the future of his characters and storylines, and the mere presence of the film’s mid-credit scene is a big reason why.
DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has already confirmed that Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle has a future in the new Dcu, which officially kicks off with 2025’s Superman: Legacy. But Soto previously told THR that he expects Jaime to have company, including the extended Reyes family and Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine).
With the mid-credit scene revealing that Jenny’s father (and the second Blue Beetle) Ted Kord is still alive, Soto likes the odds of this thread continuing since Ted is also tied to Booster Gold, a character that has a Max series in development. And considering that Gunn and his co-dc boss Peter Safran have cut a number of scenes from the last remaining...

The newest DC movie and the 14th installment of DC Extended Universe ‘Blue Beetle’ recently premiered in theaters. However, the movie didn’t really premiere with a bang, at least not in a commercial sense. The movie grossed merely $41.4 million worldwide during the opening weekend, which is shameful even when it’s compared to ‘The Flash,’ DC’s most recent box-office bomb, which grossed $139 million worldwide on the opening weekend.
We don’t want to play a general after a battle, but it was suspected that ‘Blue Beetle’ wouldn’t do well commercially, despite the fact that it’s undoubtedly the best-reviewed DC movie since last year’s ‘The Batman’ or, if we stick only to Dceu, since 2021’s ‘The Suicide Squad,’ which was also commercially unsuccessful, although that movie was released in theaters and on the HBOMax streaming service simultaneously. This certainly puts a big question on the future of Blue Beetle in Dcu,...

After four consecutive weekends, a new film sits atop of the box-office weekend top ten as Blue Beetle debuted $3 million ahead of previous champion Barbie.
In its first weekend of release, Blue Beetle claimed the top spot of the top ten this box-office weekend with a total of $25 million. This was enough to push Barbie to second place after four weeks atop the top ten. Despite losing the top spot this weekend to Blue Beetle, Barbie still took in $22 million and brought it’s five-week total to $567 million. This puts it just $6.98 million behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie to take over as the highest domestic grossing film of the year. Dropping a spot to finish in third, Oppenheimer made $11 million over the weekend to raise its five-week total to $285 million. Meanwhile, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem fell to fourth place with $8.4 million in its third week of release.

Refresh for latest…: It’s been another very busy weekend at the international box office with milestones and great holds, as well as a new entry and local-language movies adding to the mix.
Coming off of a record-breaking debut in Korea, Christopher Nolan and Universal’s Oppenheimer led the overseas frame for the studios with a $32M session in 80 markets, pushing the global cume well past $700M, as we noted would be the case yesterday.
Warner Bros, meanwhile, has a lot going on. Barbie added $26.7M in 75 markets to lift worldwide to a high-heeled $1.279B. The studio’s China coproduction Meg 2: The Trench has now crossed $300M global, and its new offering, DC’s Blue Beetle landed within the expected range, bowing to $18M from 63 overseas markets.
At the same time, there is action aplenty for local titles in China and India (see more below).

“Barbie” (Warner Bros.) and “Oppenheimer” (Universal) remain strong in their fifth weekends, but a modest $25.4 million opening for “Blue Beetle” (WB) at #1 contributed to a total gross of around $100 million. This weekend tied with the summer’s lowest.
“Blue Beetle” is also this year’s lowest-grossing #1 since February’s Super Bowl weekend. With a pre-marketing expense of $120 million, and high hopes for spotlighting a Latino story and creative team, the initial result is disappointing.
It attracted a 40 percent Latino audience, which is significantly located in the areas where a tropical storm was expected Sunday afternoon; its impact could reduce gross totals. This point in August normally sees a drop in grosses, although over $100 million was the norm through Labor Day pre-2020.

“Blue Beetle” grossed three times as much as “Strays” (Universal), the R-rated talking dog comedy with a voice cast that included Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx.

“Blue Beetle” has dethroned “Barbie” at the domestic box office. The latest DC superhero adventure claimed the No. 1 spot despite a softer-than-expected debut of $25.4 million.
At the international box office, “Blue Beetle,” starring Xolo Maridueña as the alien symbiote, added $18 million from 63 markets. With $43 million globally, it’s one of the softest starts in the history of the DC Cinematic Universe.
After four consecutive weekends in first place, “Barbie” landed on her feet at second place with $21.5 million from 4,003 theaters, a huge result at this point in its theatrical run. After five weeks of release, Greta Gerwig’s fantasy-comedy has generated $567 million and will soon overtake Universal’s animated “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($574 million) as the biggest domestic release of the year.
“Blue Beetle” cost more than $100 million to produce and many millions more to promote, so it’ll need to defy the box office odds to justify its price tag.

Sunday Am: Writethru after Saturday Am Post Even though this weekend’s new entries – Warner Bros/DC’s Blue Beetle and Universal’s Strays – aren’t coming in at the top of their projections, with respective lower weekends of $25.4M and $8.3M, the overall health of the theatrical business is still in good shape. It’s being further bolstered by the fifth weekends of Barbie ($21.5M) and Oppenheimer ($10.6M), which are fueling an estimated $100.7M weekend that’s +28% over the same August frame a year ago. That was a dry spell, led by CrunchyRoll’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero ($21.1M).
It remains to be seen what the toll will be on today’s box office in Los Angeles from the onset of Hurricane Hilary. If it’s heavy rains, no one is going out. Blue Beetle is currently overperforming in LA.

Blue Beetle flew into theaters on Friday as the first Latino DC superhero. But the day that should have been a celebration was instead bittersweet for Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the credited writer of the Warner Bros. release.
Rather than taking in the milestone moment, Dunnet-Alcocer struggled with bittersweet feelings as he found himself on the picket line, waving his sign, outside the very studio that made his movie. At one point he found himself under a massive billboard emblazoned with the faces and logo of Beetle.
“I’m proud and I’m sad. I’m excited and I am afraid,” he told The Hollywood Reporter of the tumult that was brewing inside him.

"Blue Beetle" is hitting theaters this weekend and the hope is that the superhero origin story can finally deliver a win for DC in 2023. It's been a rough year for Warner Bros. in this arena, with "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" becoming, without exaggeration, one of the biggest superhero movie flops of all time. "The Flash," sad to say, wasn't all that far behind, relative to the burden of sky-high expectations. Despite a very big marketing push from the studio, director Andy Muschietti's big trip through the DC multiverse failed to catch on with moviegoers in a meaningful way. Now, the question must be asked: Did WB put their eggs in the wrong basket?
"The Flash" topped out at just $268.1 million worldwide against a $200 million budget. It will lose a great deal of money for the studio — no two ways about it. Yet, WB seemed to believe they had...

The family-friendly Blue Beetle has started off its box-office run with $3.3 million in Thursday evening previews.
Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, the DC and Warner Bros. event pic is Hollywood’s first live-action superhero film built around a Latino protagonist and hopes to be a breakthrough movie for Latino audiences and for Latino representation in front of and behind the camera. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s review, it stands to put Cobra Kai recruit Xolo Maridueña “on the map as a young actor with the right spark to carry a new offshoot of the DC Extended Universe.”
Blue Beetle hopes to open in the $30 million range domestically and could have the bragging rights to toppling Barbie from the top spot after four weekends (talk about a superhero feat).
Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén, and Becky G also star.

Only two months after we watched ‘The Flash,’ a DC movie that was promising so much but delivered so little, it’s time for another DC movie to come out, as well as another hope that it can pull off a decent commercial result at least. ‘Blue Beetle’ was initially announced as the streaming movie for HBOMax alongside ‘Batgirl,’ before ‘Batgirl’ was scrapped, and ‘Blue Beetle’ was changed to have a regular theatrical release. The movie’s opening weekend is now upon us, and we’re honestly anxious to find out how the movie will do during the opening weekend.
One of the reasons that Dceu movies have fallen into a series of commercial flops is due to the fact that James Gunn, a new co-ceo of DC Studios, announced that Dceu will be ended this year after the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ and in July 2025, a new soft-reboot franchise,...

The DC Universe is about to have a brand new superhero in the form of "Blue Beetle." The latest DC Comics adaptation has been a long time coming, with the film originally produced for HBO Max before Warner Bros. decided to give it a theatrical release. "Blue Beetle" represents the first time this character has appeared in a live-action movie, and the film is also giving a Latino superhero the spotlight, which is a big deal. But did director Angel Manuel Soto manage to make a satisfying film?
Critics and fans have seen DC's latest, which features "Cobra Kai" star Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle. It's been an admittedly rough year for WB and DC, with both "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" and "The Flash" bombing in a big way. Is this movie poised to break the bad streak? Based on the early word from those who have seen the film,...

Director Ángel Manuel Soto and his DC film Blue Beetle have prevailed over a number of obstacles en route to Aug. 18th’s theatrical release. As the first mainstream Latino-led superhero film in live action, Soto and co. have overcome the lack of proper Latino representation that has existed for generations, while introducing a much-needed hero in Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), as well as his thoroughly developed Latino family, the Reyeses.
Blue Beetle producer Zev Foreman originally had theatrical ambitions, but given WarnerMedia’s emphasis on streaming at the end of 2020, the project was designated as an HBO Max release. However, in December 2021, just months prior to WarnerMedia’s merger with Discovery, the powers that be at Warner Bros. decided to upgrade the film to a theatrical release, allowing Latino audiences to finally have their moment in the live-action superhero genre.
