It’s October, so it’s time for two things: pumpkin spice on everything and the start of Christmas marketing. And just in time, the Norwegian holiday horror-comedy There’s Something in the Barn makes its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.
Bill inherits his uncle’s house in Norway after the man dies in a freak accident. We, of course, know it was no accident, and soon enough so will Bill, his wife and Bill’s kids Nora and Lucas (Townes Bunner) will too.
They relocate from California to Norway with plans to open a bed and breakfast, but complications ensue. Both in the obvious cultural differences and, more ominously, what Lucas discovers living in the barn.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.
Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.
Hulu’s original movies are decidedly spooky-centric this month as well. The horror meme movie Grimcutty premieres on Oct. 10 and will be followed by Matriarch on Oct. 21. Of course, many of the library...

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/19.99) retains its spot as #1 on all three VOD charts for a fourth week, a record since IndieWire started tracking home viewing. Next week, the film could extend its streak — but expect that to be the end with the impending debut of Warner Bros.’ “The Batman.”
Sources with knowledge of Warners’ plans indicate “The Batman” will be made available on PVOD April 18 — the same day it starts streaming on HBO Max. Even a blockbuster of this size will feed the studio’s streamer after 45 days.
“The Batman” was the first Warners release since the end of the studio’s “Project Popcorn,” which gave 2021 theatrical releases day-and-date play on HBO Max. In that period, the studio usually delayed PVOD for at least 60 days after initial release, and it began after the initial streaming period ended. This will be the first opportunity to gauge its new home-release strategies.

Laura Dern (Jurassic World Dominion) and Liam Hemsworth (Poker Face) have signed on to star in the film Lonely Planet, which Susannah Grant (Unbelievable) is writing and directing for Netflix.
Lonely Planet is billed as a love story set in Morocco. Specifics with regard to its plot are being kept under wraps. Grant is also producing alongside Sarah Timberman and Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions, with VP Studio Film Kira Goldberg serving as creative lead for Netflix.
The film continues the creative partnership between Netflix and 3dot, which has thus far produced the streamer’s upcoming thriller series, Anatomy of a Scandal, based on the book by Sarah Vaughan. 3dot entered into a multi-year, first-look film deal with Netflix in 2019, with adaptations of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestseller The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Diane Cardwell’s memoir Rockaway also upcoming.

Showtime has ordered a drama pilot inspired by the life of Rebecca Bender, a national leader on and survivor of sex trafficking, Variety has learned.
The pilot is titled “Coercion.” It hails from Susannah Grant, with Sydney Chandler attached to star. The series picks up with Bender’s escape from the world of sex trafficking after six years, her struggles to return to a “normal” life, and her emergence as a confident, funny and impassioned advocate for justice.
Bender is now one of nation’s foremost experts on sex trafficking and serves as a consultant for federal law enforcement.
“’Coercion’ is based on Rebecca Bender’s personal story of entrapment in the world of sex trafficking, her escape and her stunning emergence as a relentless force against that world,” said Amy Israel, executive vice president of scripted programming for Showtime. “We’re excited to be working with Susannah, whose work...

Photo: ‘The Blazing World’/Sundance ‘The Blazing World’--A Cult Classic Mixtape Carlson Young, the writer, director, and star of the new film ‘The Blazing World’ did not go small for her feature debut. ‘The Blazing World’, which is based on a 2018 short film also directed by Young, is a bizarre phantasmagoria of a film, reminiscent of the work of David Lynch, Tarsem Singh, and Nicholas Winding Refn. It starts out as a mental illness horror story briefly detours into a Linklater-esque hangout film, and then goes full-on Pan’s Labyrinth. It’s got a touch of narrative attention deficit disorder, feeling at times more like a music video stretched to feature-length than a cohesive story (Young directed the music video for the song ‘Catch & Release’ by the band Peel; the song features prominently on this film’s soundtrack). Depression makes it hard to focus though, so this is relatable.

Since Lesli Linka Glatter received her first Best Drama Directing Emmy nomination for “Mad Men” in 2010, she’s amassed four more bids for her directorial work on “Homeland,” with noms for “Q&a” (2013), “From A to B and Back Again” (2015), “The Tradition of Hospitality” (2016) and “America First” (2017). After a three-year hiatus, will voters welcome her back for the Showtime hit’s eighth and final season? Do not count her out.
Like for Seasons 3 through 7, Glatter directed four of the final season’s 12 episodes, the first two, “Deception Indicated” and “Catch and Release,” the seventh “F—er Shot Me,” and the series closer “Prisoners of War.” I anticipate she submits the finale, which chronicles Carrie’s (Claire Danes) mission to uncover the identity of Saul’s (Mandy Patinkin) Russian asset and hand her over to the Russians in exchange for the flight recorder of the U.S. president’s helicopter. Pakistan and the U.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist made his comments on ABC's Good Morning America on Friday, two days after the news made headlines and spurred a lengthy letter of denial of assault or unconsensual sex from the fired Today show co-host, who lost his job at NBC News in 2017 over alleged sexual misconduct.. An extraordinary year for the Colombian Oscar nominee continued as Ciro Guerra’s drama was announced on Wednesday as winner of the 2016 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize.
A jury comprising former winners Mike Cahill and Shane Carruth, Kerry Bishé from Catch And Release, science professor Clifford Johnson, and Harvard director of space genetics Ting Wu awarded the $20,000 cash award.
They cited the film for its “original and provocative portrait of a scientist and a scientific journey into the unknown, and for its unconventional depiction of how different cultures seek to understand nature.”
For the first time the Institute said it will add a Fellowship for a writer with an early-stage episodic project to support its development for television.
Writer-director Mark Levinson has been awarded the $15,000 Sundance Institute / Sloan Fellowship for The Gold Bug Variations, while co-writers Darcy Brislin and Dyana Winkler (Bell) each receive $12,500 Sundance Institute / Sloan Commissioning Grants.

“You’re like…an angry little slice of pie.”
‘Catch and Release’ is a quiet, laid-back episode with much more to recommend it than the series last two entries. It gives Peridot some much-needed depth without resorting to making her likable, boasts an impressive array of gorgeous backgrounds, and makes a meager stab toward setting the stage for season 2′s overarching plot. The episode’s main thrust, though, is the establishment of a tentative connection between Peridot and Steven. It lays its groundwork well, first giving us a glimpse at Peridot’s weaselly desperation to escape a planet she knows is about to get wrecked and then revealing her status as a shortstack and general nerd in Gem society. Her assignment with Jasper was some kind of final shot at dignity for her, and now she’s stuck in a basement without her prosthetics and getting in slap fights with children.

She is a tiny little woman, a girl really, her eyes big and scared, she chews nervously on her sleeves, she looks at everyone with suspicion and maybe a bit of hope. She wears way too much eye makeup and her nail polish is always chipped and fading. She looks lost and alone in a waiting area of what may be a train station, airport or bus station. It is a waiting area for a ferry to Juneau, Alaska.
Her Mother is ill and Father deceased. Mother will be entering a hospital in Seattle, Washington, where they live, Mother can’t take care of her anymore. She is being sent to Juneau to stay with an Uncle, (known only as Uncle, played by Brian Geraghty). This is MacKenzie, the fragile but resourceful heroine of Wildlike.

I am pretty sure that 2007’s Hitman is the first movie to cause controversy by maybe having visible labia on its poster. That is about the only superlative I can hand to that movie, however. Even Timothy Olyphant, who made even Catch and Release watchable, couldn’t save that one. Fortunately, those who have seen the first trailer for Hitman: Agent 47 — sure to be online any day now — say that it is a definite improvement. The reboot stars Rupert Friend, Zachary Quinto, and Hannah Ware, and it looks like a B movie worth watching. 20th Century Fox has released a few images from the film to pique your interest before the trailer comes out. Friend plays the titular Hitman, Quinto is the chief antagonist, and Ware is a woman who is caught between them somehow. Rumor has it she is a human MacGuffin.

Here’s a title that will get your attention: Discovery is launching a new survival series called Dude, You’re Screwed!
The format might interest you, too. Have you ever watched Bear Grylls on Man vs. Wild and thought you could likewise survive being dropped in some unknown remote location? Dude, You’re Screwed is similar. Five survival experts with different backgrounds (a Green Beret, a former Navy Seal, etc) are “kidnapped,” blindfolded, and then plopped into one of the world’s harshest environments (such as a jungle or a glacier). They each must make their way back to civilization unscathed within 100 hours.

This week's Criminal Minds episode provided a satisfying procedural story, undiluted by distractions of The Replicator, or by any overly-disturbing scenes.
It was a full-on puzzle piece, which the Bau had to decipher and resolve without needing to dive into any of the team members' back stories.
The story of "Pay It Forward" involved a man who sat in jail 25 years ago and watched while a woman's alleged rape was covered up to protect the son of the town's favored industrialist who ran a carpet business. The Unsub subsequently murdered and decapitated the alleged rapist and secretly stuffed his head into a time capsule which the town then sealed and buried, to be opened again in 2013.
His intent, hidden for all those years, was to eventually ensure that all those who were involved in the alleged rape were provided his brand of vigilante justice.

Four weeks after the shootings in Aurora, Colo., the box office remains in a relative slump — despite performing over 20 percent better than the same weekends in 2011 and 2010.
According to industry consulting firm Screen Engine, 17 percent of moviegoers are still reluctant to head to the theater following the shooting. Ever since episode 4.the great "Rosetta".I've started subsequent Alphas write-ups with some version or other of "maybe we'll get to the Red Flag storyline next week." It's starting to remind me of Christmas mornings when I opened a gift only to get a sweater and not a Nintendo 64. We'll get back there, but until then, I'm going back to treating Alphas as a series of standalone episodes. That's not a bad thing; "Bill and Gary's Excellent Adventure" was great fun and "Catch and Release" brought up some mildly interesting points.

Alphas did something very crafty this week. It explored how protective we can become of our children in such a way that it didn’t even become apparent until the final minutes that that was the theme of the episode. What once seemed like three separate plotlines was revealed to be just pieces of a bigger picture.
“Catch and Release” features Summer Glau (Firefly) as Skylar, an Alpha with the highly valuable ability to invent devices using virtually any random objects. She’s like MacGyver, only cuter. She has a history with Dr. Rosen and Nina, who helped her five years ago. Some goons have been after her for her technology, and the Alphas attempt to help her. When it’s discovered it’s actually the Nsa who are tailing her, Skylar escapes. From here the show makes it seems as though she’s working with Red Flag, based on...

"Catch and Release" ended up posing more questions than it answered, but Summer Glau was back on my TV, so how can I complain?
While we knew about Red Flag and the goals they want to accomplish, I had forgotten about the government side and the personal gain they stand to inherit from the Alphas. It continued to force Rosen to choose sides. He has the unenviable job of trying to balance his team, governmental pressure and being the judge and jury to Alphas who may or may not be evil.
Everything finally collided with Glau’s character, Skylar. She seemed like a threat, being able to build the most advanced gadgets and weaponry on Earth, and she was answering to the mysterious “Z.”
Skylar opened up old wounds with Nina and Rosen. Nina was forced to decide just how much of a puppet she wanted to be rather than thinking for herself.

The talented sci-fi-favorite Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Firefly) guest-starred in “Catch and Release” as Skyler Adams, an alpha formerly under the care of Dr. Rosen. With the power of being able to take apart machines and invent new creations, Skylar is an important commodity for the National Security Agency and the Department of Defense who converge on her and her bioelectric computer processor. The Nsa wants to use it with predator drones while the Dod wants to use it to locate other alphas. Her suspicious activity leads Agents Sullivan and Cley to think that she may be dealing with terrorist groups or Red Flag. Skyler’s return on the radar reopens wounds with Rosen and Nina. She turned down Rosen’s offer to be a part of the alpha team but trusted Nina to come to her for help. She challenged Nina on whether or not she...

Syfy’s newest sci-fi series Alphas has introduced us to a world where there are people with special abilities known as Alphas. Following an extraordinary Alphas team assembled by the government to both assist Alphas and to track down criminals using their abilities, each week we discover more about the complex world they embody. Over the course of the previous six episodes, another interested party was revealed – Red Flag, a group of Alphas determined to fight back against the U.S. Government’s forced captivity and exploitation of Alphas against their will. With the battlelines being drawn, the Alphas recruited by Dcis (Defense Criminal Investigative Service) and working with Dr. Rosen have found themselves caught in the middle of a developing war between non-Alphas and Alphas. With the government keeping a watchful-eye over every move they make and tasking them with assignments to track down rogue Alphas deemed to pose a threat to U.

Bill and Gary embarked on a truly great adventure this week. Our critic loved the most recent episode of Alphas.
Based solely on the guest star for this Monday's installment, it's safe to assume he'll be smiling after "Catch and Release," as well. Summer Glau stops by the Syfy hit as an Alpha with a powerful skill: she can create dangerous weapons. And she's on the run.

The Monday after Bruno -- Sacha Baron Cohen's 2009 follow-up to his massively successful comedy, Borat -- was released, the media was rife with tales about how the burgeoning social network Twitter had essentially killed the movie. It had opened with strong numbers on Friday, but saw a 40 percent drop on Saturday, a drop many pundits attributed to negative word-of-mouth on Twitter. Out of that experience, the Time, The NYTimes, and a number of movie blogs wrote trend pieces suggesting that Twitter would essentially change the movie industry. Word of mouth would travel faster, and more films would wither over the course of their first weekend.
Since the release of Bruno, however, there hasn't been a lot of statistical evidence to back up those claims. A few other films, like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and Paranormal Activity 2 have had large percentage drops between Friday and Saturday,...

Summer Glau, Garret Dillahunt and Lindsay Wagner have all signed up for guest roles on Alphas. The Syfy drama, which stars David Strathairn and Ryan Cartwright, focuses on five people who use their superhuman abilities to fight injustice. Summer Glau will appear in 'Catch and Release', the seventh episode of the show's debut season, according to TV Line. The actress recently starred in short-lived NBC drama The Cape and has previously appeared in Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse. The famed writer Agatha Christie’s character Miss Marple was like a matronly precursor to Veronica Mars – a spinster who solved mysteries. Of course, Hollywood being what it is, Disney's rebooting the classic series and have handed a role appropriate for Betty White to the lovely young(ish?) Jennifer Garner. The Catch And Release star will next be seen in the Arthur remake alongside Russell Brand and Greta Gerwig, who we just wrote about three seconds ago.
Apparently Disney’s screenplay has morphed Miss Marple into a woman “in her 30s/40s.” Go figure. I mean, on the bright side, they didn’t cast, like... Blake Lively, but still. I like my sleuths octogenarian.

Exclusive: Peter Chernin's production company has quietly brought in veteran movie producer Jenno Topping to be Evp of the film department reporting to its president Dylan Clark. People who do business with the company say she's already in place. I'm told she reports to Clark but appears to be running the film side alongside him. While Clark was an eight-year Universal Pictures executive and former Evp of Production there before starting at Chernin Entertainment 18 months ago, Topping has hands-on filmmaking experience especially on Sony Pictures productions. She had a first-look deal with Sony's Columbia Pictures for nearly a decade before partnering with actor Tobey Maguire at his Columbia-based Maguire Entertainment where she oversaw the development slate and day-to-day production. But Chernin retired as News Corp's No. 2 with an amazing goodbye package that included "put" Fox films and TV shows which is something no one gets in Hollywood these days.

We salute one of Hollywood’s most underappreciated actors, and pick out ten of Timothy Olyphant’s finest movies...
Like so many of my on-screen heroes, Timothy Olyphant manages to fit the profile of being utterly superb and massively underappreciated, with the constant ability to make every film he’s in better.
Despite appearances in some high profile movies, a starring role that will launch him to the level he deserves, one that cements his name in mainstream consciousness, still seems elusive.
Olyphant’s TV work has seen success from the swear-a-thon that is Deadwood, a recurring role in Damages with Glenn Close and as Raylan Givens, the cowboy hat wearing, shoot first, ask questions later U.S. Marshall in Justified, whose second series is currently airing on FX.

Timothy Olyphant may have landed the role of his career as U.S. Marashall Raylan Givens on the hit FX TV series "Justified," but besides a few years on "Deadwood" the 42-year-old actor spent most of his time on the big screen. In fact, his numerous credits over the last decade include "Dreamcatcher," "The Girl Next Door," "Catch and Release," "Live Free or Die Hard," "Hitman," "A Perfect Gateway" and "The Crazies." Granted, most of those weren't big hits, but he's worked much more steadily than many of his peers. In between season one and two of "Justified," Olyphant spent some time...

Just a day after three vastly different movie posters got their online release, illustrating the dos and do nots of the business, two more have appeared, both stubbornly standard. For the most part at least. One has a trailer that appears disconcertingly sober but reassuringly funny. The other has only Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess as its leads and the best-selling David Nicholls book of the same name (Nicholls also wrote the script) as its source material.
The first is Arthur [Cinema Blend]:
The second One Day, directed by An Education‘s Lone Scherfig [Yahoo!]:
With the Arthur poster, it’s curious to note the complete absence of Greta Gerwig, who plays the central love interest (at least Liza Minnelli did in the original Dudley Moore film), and the sexy power play for Jennifer Garner, who owns a third of the space. And while it makes sense that Garner’s a bigger star than Gerwig,...

We're fond of director Jonathan Demme because of Silence Of The Lambs, mostly. Not that Rachel Getting Married, in which Disney princess Anne Hathaway actually became elevated to the Serious Actress she is today, wasn't fine. It was. But nothing really beats Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb.
Until now (hopefully!). Demme's signed on to direct a CBS pilot that sounds, admittedly, stupid. But his skills may elevate this hokey-sounding premise to something worthy of Clarice Starling. Penned by Erin Brockovich scribe Susannah Grant, who also wrote the Jennifer Garner drama Catch And Release (we know), here's the pitch for the yet-untitled hour:

On Friday, families were out in force as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Tangled commanded the box office with a potent one-two punch, followed by Megamind in a distant third. Burlesque, Love and Other Drugs and Faster each posted modest numbers, and overall Friday business was in the ballpark of the same Friday last year when The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Blind Side led. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 pulled in an estimated $20.75 million, down 66 percent from last Friday. Its drop was more extreme than the last Thanksgiving Potter, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was off 43 percent. Tallying $190.8 million in eight days, though, the penultimate Potter boasted the top-grossing eight-day launch of the series, passing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's $185 million, and it has gained ground on New Moon, which had $205.8 million by day eight. However, in terms of estimated attendance,...

It's been two years since "The Wire," ran its course over on HBO, and four years now, since the cable network prematurely pulled the plug on "Deadwood." Inarguably the best two ensemble dramas on television over the last decade, most of us probably assumed that the individual members of each brilliant cast would go on to well-deserved success. Unfortunately, for the most part, these actors returned from whence they came: They are solid character actors that elevate almost everything they're in (save, perhaps, for Dominic West, whose flaws have been exposed outside the world of Baltimore). Several years after the fact, many of these cast members are still referred to by their character roles in their respective series.

First we had Across the Universe featuring songs by The Beatles, then a feature adaptation of Mamma Mia! with the songs of Abba, and now 20th Century Fox has won the rights to a jukebox musical set to the music of... The Beach Boys. Like the titles preceding it, the movie will work a fictional narrative out of previously released songs by its respective musical group. It's a high-profile project that was pitched to a number of studios, including Universal, but Fox came out on top in the bidding war. Variety lists Susannah Grant as being in charge of the film's script. Grant is best known as the screenwriter of Erin Brockovich, for which she received an Oscar nomination. She's also responsible for the screenplays of The Soloist, In Her Shoes, 28 Days, and Catch and Release (which she also directed), as well as co-writing kid's films such as Pocahontas, Ever After...

She’s definitely been known for her prolific work in the romantic comedy genre, and now Jennifer Garner is in talks to try out a new thriller role.
The “Catch and Release” babe has been tapped to star opposite Jeremy Renner in “Better Living Through Chemistry,” though nothing is official yet.
In the film, Jen would play a trophy wife who introduces a small-town pharmacist to the edgy world of prescription drug abuse.
However, as things get dicier, Garner begins to plot the murder of her husband. Stay linked to the GossipCenter for the latest on this project.

The summer movie season is poised for a typically quiet close this Labor Day weekend. Three pictures enter the nationwide fray: Going the Distance strikes over 3,300 screens at 3,030 locations, The American hits approximately 3,200 screens at 2,823 locations, and Machete slashes onto around 3,400 screens at 2,670 locations. The American opened on Wednesday to $1.67 million and made another $1.47 million on Thursday, topping both days. While that may seem ho-hum, it actually was solid for its genre and for the time of year. Past comparable movies, The Constant Gardener and Traitor, each debuted on the Wednesday before Labor Day weekend and had grossed around half as much as The American. If American were to follow a similar pattern as those movies, its four-day Labor Day weekend haul would be close to $20 million. Aside from that, The American finds George Clooney on familiar movie turf, and its marketing has promised an internationally-flavored action thriller, though nothing...
