Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s turn in Bullet Train has led to theories he’s going to play Bond next. But do actors who play Bond-like characters go on to actually play 007? We take a look.
At the time of writing, at least, there’s much speculation about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his connection to the James Bond franchise. In March, a British newspaper with a big red masthead spread the rumour that the actor is secretly being lined up to play 007, taking over from Daniel Craig.
It’s a rumour so persistent that Taylor-Johnson has started to get a bit cross when ‘The Bond Question’ is brought up in interviews. When asked by an Associated Press reporter about the whole matter, Taylor-Johnson looked down at his feet, as though trying to repress some terrifying wellspring of anger, before abruptly marching off with a chirpy, “Alright, have a good one!”

Actor Sir Michael Gambon, known for his portrayal of Dumbledore in the beloved Harry Potter film series, has bequeathed his entire fortune to his wife of 61 years, Anne Gambon.
The 82-year-old stage and screen icon, who died in September last year after a battle with pneumonia, left no inheritance to his long-term girlfriend, Philipa Hart.
Hart, a set designer, first crossed paths with Gambon when he filmed Longitude in 2000. The couple shares two teenage children, Tom, 17, and William, 15. For two decades, Gambon divided his time between his wife and Hart, but his will makes no provision for her.
The three-page document, drafted in 2016, named Gambon’s wife and their 60-year-old son, Fergus, as executors. In the event of his wife’s passing before him, the entirety of his £1,465,882 ($1.7 million) fortune was designated to be inherited by Fergus.
The will stipulated that his children with Hart would each receive £10,000 and a trophy.

It's been a good two years since Daniel Craig's swan song as James Bond, "No Time to Die" and its divisive ending debuted in theaters. But even before Craig's finale arrived, rumors continued to swirl that Henry Cavill was still in the running to take on the role following Craig's retirement. The "Man of Steel" actor had almost clinched the role back in the early 2000s when longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were casting for 2006's "Casino Royale." Unfortunately for Cavill, he just lost out to Craig -- who reinvigorated the franchise with a fresh take on England's greatest spy.
Cavill has since remained a favorite to play Bond, despite the fact that he's now 40 and would have been in his early 20s the last time he came close to being cast. He's even spoken openly about what he would have done in the role,...

Before Daniel Craig was James Bond, he starred in Layer Cake, a stylish crime drama directed by Matthew Vaughn and based on the novel of the same name by author J.J. Connolly. It’s not a film about a carefully crafted cake with multiple layers and delicious filling. Vaughn’s Layer Cake refers to the layers (or levels) anyone in business goes through while rising to the top of the food chain.
Craig plays an unnamed man in the film known as Xxxx, while Vaughn’s interpretation of the story differs from Connolly’s novel. In the book, Xxxx and his hired gunman wait in a park to kill the off-screen antagonist, Dargon. While in the garden, they shoot an American tourist, mistaking him for Dragon. Initially, the movie would have done the same, but Sony Pictures was uncomfortable with killing an American and asked for the scene to be changed.

When writer-director Matthew Vaughn came by the Den of Geek studio at New York Comic Con over the weekend, it was a curious time for many of the subjects and stories which naturally intrigue him. Chief among them, of course, is his new meta-spy-action-romance thriller, Argylle. Due out next February, that film returns to the espionage genre which Vaughn has already visited via the Kingsman movies, although now with a twist. In a riff on Romancing the Stone, Argylle is about an espionage novelist (Bryce Dallas Howard) who ends up commandeered into a real-world caper.
The film isn’t exactly subverting the tropes and iconography of James Bond, but then again Vaughn also coyly suggests that Henry Cavill plays “007 and a half” in the movie. Vaughn should know too, especially if the latest James Bond movie rumors are true. For when we sit down with the maverick filmmaker, unverified reports...

"I don't like boring, serious films; I like entertaining escapism," filmmaker Matthew Vaughn said of his films at the New York Comic Con 2023 "Matthew Vaughn: From Kickass to Kingsman to Argylle" panel. Best known for directing genre-subverting movies like "Kingsman" (he and comic creator Mark Millar thought James Bond was getting "too serious") and "Kick-Ass", Vaughn prefers his action told with style.
While reflecting on his career since the 2007 film "Layer Cake," Vaughn reiterated his plans for "Kingsman 3" and "Kick-Ass: Reboot," with the latter starting filming next year and going a much different route than his original "Kick-Ass" film. He mentioned too that he's directing a musical that he can't talk about yet ("Elton John's catalog [referring to his producing work in 'Rocketman'] is pretty hard to beat"). Tom Hardy's first major film gag was playing one of the many faceless soldiers in Ridley Scott's overwrought war thriller "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. The actor was only about 24 at the time and had just come off of the acclaimed HBO WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers." His second feature was also a war drama called "Deserter," a low-profile project that was released in 2002. Casting directors seemed to like the way Hardy looked in uniform.
Also in 2002, however, Hardy was offered a higher-profile role -- and a very challenging one -- when he was cast as Shinzon in Stuard Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who had been raised in a Reman mining colony, and who would rise up against his Roluman oppressors and attempt to take control of the Romulan Star Empire. Shinzon was essentially a younger, more aggressive version of Picard,...

Patrick Stewart shares blunt thoughts on 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis” in his new memoir, “Making It So” (via Insider). The film, the fourth and final “Star Trek” feature to star “The Next Generation” cast, featured one of Stewart’s least memorable outings as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, at least according to the actor himself.
“‘Nemesis,’ which came out in 2002, was particularly weak,” Stewart writes. “I didn’t have a single exciting scene to play, and the actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy.”
Hardy was not a household name when he played the villain in “Star Trek: Nemesis,” and Stewart predicted his co-star never would be due to how shut off he was from the rest of the cast during the making of the movie.

Will the real Agent Argylle please stand up?
The trailer for Apple TV+ film “Argylle,” directed by Matthew Vaughn, centers on reclusive writer Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), whose spy action hero Argylle (Henry Cavill) seemingly comes to life.
The stranger-than-fiction twist, reminiscent of “The Lost City,” leads Elly on a series of adventures with very real spies, led by Sam Rockwell, as her novel hits too close to their reality. Bryan Cranston, John Cena, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson also star.
For “Barbie” fans, “Argylle” marks a reunion between fellow ensemble cast members Dua Lipa and Cena, who played the mermaid and merman dolls.

Universal has just rolled out the much-anticipated official trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming spy comedy, ‘Argylle.’ This Apple Original project, crafted in collaboration with Marv, is set to hit global theaters next February. It’s a good four months early, but they’re generating buzz already!
Matthew Vaughn, who previously brought us edgy movies like the ‘Kingsman‘ series and ‘Kick-Ass,’ is the mastermind behind ‘Argylle.’ The film promises a delightful mix of sharp humor, thrilling spy sequences, and a dash of reality-altering plot twists. If you’ve watched the ‘Kingsman’ series, you know you’re in for a treat with Vaughn’s unique style.
Our central character is the world’s top spy named “Argylle.” Mind you, it’s not “argyle” as the patterned fabric. He embarks on an international mission, full of unexpected twists and turns. What adds a quirky angle to this spy narrative is Elly Conway,...

Michael Gambon, the Irish-English actor best known for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the “Harry Potter” movies, has died, Variety has confirmed. He was 82.
“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” his family said in a statement. “Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”
While it is easier for a character actor, often working in supporting roles, to rack up a large number of credits than it is for lead actors, Gambon was enormously prolific, with over 150 TV or film credits in an era when half that number would be impressive and unusual — and this for a man whose body of stage work was also prodigious.

Henry Cavill’s age worked against him when auditioning to play James Bond.
The “Man of Steel” actor was the second choice to portray 007 in the 2006 franchise revamp “Casino Royale,” with director Martin Campbell now revealing that Cavill would have been cast if he appeared older — and if Daniel Craig wasn’t available.
“He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous,” Campbell said in an interview with Express UK. “And look, if Daniel didn’t exist Henry would have made an excellent Bond. He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape… very handsome, very chiseled. He just looked a little young at that time back then.”
Sam Heughan and Matthew Rhys were also in the running to take on the role that eventually went to Craig, who led the Bond film series until 2021’s “No Time to Die.”

This year, the search for Daniel Craig’s James Bond replacement will begin and, while rumours about a younger 007 were previously squashed by franchise producer Michael G. Wilson, longtime casting director, Debbie McWilliams, is further elaborating, explaining why young actors typically don’t fit the iconic role as opposed to those in their thirties.
“When we started, it was a slightly different feel,” McWilliams told Radio Times in a new interview about the last search for a new James Bond, which ended in Craig’s casting. “We did look at a lot of younger actors, and I just don’t think they had the gravitas. They didn’t have the experience, they didn’t have the mental capacity to take it on, because it’s not just the part they’re taking on, it’s a massive responsibility.”

Her Majesty’s Secret Service is looking for a new James Bond after Daniel Craig’s exit from the franchise in 2021’s No Time to Die, but the search is proving to be more challenging than anyone could anticipate. Rumors about a younger Bond making the scene continue to run rampant—however, 007 franchise producer Michael G. Wilson says a salad days version of the British superspy looks unlikely. Wilson recently confirmed the next Bond would be a “thirty-something” actor, dashing the prospects of a Bond who gets carded when buying martinis.
Speaking with Radio Times, Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams explained why a younger actor wouldn’t work for the franchise’s future.

A new James Bond is on the way following Daniel Craig’s exit in “No Time to Die.” While rumors circulated last year that a younger actor was being courted and that the age of 007 would decrease considerably from Craig’s era, such claims were squashed by franchise producer Michael G. Wilson. He assured fans the new Bond would a “thirty-something” actor, keeping with Craig’s age range when he started his run as 007 in 2006’s “Casino Royale.”
In a new interview with Radio Times, longtime James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams explained why younger actors usually don’t fit when it comes to finding a new James Bond.
“When we started, it was a slightly different feel,” McWilliams said about the last search for a new 007 that ended with Craig’s selection. “We did look at a lot of younger actors, and I just don’t think they had the gravitas.

James Bond won’t be a young chap anytime soon.
Franchise casting director Debbie McWilliams detailed the criteria to play 007, citing that younger stars lack the “mental capacity” to transform into 007, in a recent Radio Times interview.
“When we started, it was a slightly different feel,” McWilliams, who has worked on the films since 1981, said. “We did look at a lot of younger actors, and I just don’t think they had the gravitas. They didn’t have the experience, they didn’t have the mental capacity to take it on, because it’s not just the part they’re taking on, it’s a massive responsibility.”
McWilliams added, “So we kind of scrubbed that idea and went back to the drawing board and started again.”

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we look back at the birth of a new Bond in the opening moments of 2006's "Casino Royale.")
It may be hard for some to remember now, especially in light of the downright schmaltzy ending the character received in "No Time To Die," but Daniel Craig's James Bond wasn't always given the red carpet treatment as if he were the homecoming hero for the ages. In the early 2000s, the rough-cut blonde was largely an unproven talent who was mostly familiar to audiences for a bit role in Steven Spielberg's "Munich," his leading turn in Matthew Vaughn's "Layer Cake," and an appearance in 2001's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider." Without the benefit of an established history to his name, diehards and general audiences alike...

Daniel Craig first started performing when he was a child, entertaining barflies at the pub his parents ran. He'd perform impersonations of celebrities he'd seen on television. "I'd get money," Craig told GQ of his early acting efforts. "I suppose I've been making a living out of this from a very early age." While studying at the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, Craig made his professional acting debut at 16 in a Shakespeare production, quickly establishing himself as one of Britain's finest young actors. Craig was 32 when he was cast as James Bond in 2006's "Casino Royale" -- a role that would forever change his life. He played 007 in four more films, including his 2021 Bond swan song, "No Time To Die."
There's no argument that Bond has been Craig's signature role — not surprising since he holds the record as the longest-running 007, portraying him for 15 years. But those spy films,...

Donn Cambern, the film editor who used his musical background to help make Easy Rider a masterpiece and 15 years later shared an Oscar nomination for cutting Romancing the Stone, has died. He was 93.
Cambern died Wednesday at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank of complications from a fall three weeks ago, a family spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.
The Los Angeles native edited Blume in Love (1973), Willie & Phil (1980) and Tempest (1982) for Paul Mazursky, Twins (1988) and Ghostbusters II (1989) for Ivan Reitman and worked on five Burt Reynolds starrers, including Smokey and the Bandit II (1980) and The Cannonball Run (1981).
Cambern also received an editing credit on The Last Picture Show (1971), though Peter Bogdanovich insisted that he was the editor on that.
He was honored with a career achievement award from the American Cinema Editors in 2004, and three years later, he became the first recipient of the Motion Picture Editors Guild’s Fellowship and Service Award.

How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.

It’s time to get the hot cocoa boiling and the holiday decorations up! It’s almost December and nearly every streaming service has consumers covered with both seasonal content and new shows to carry them into the new year. Amazon’s Prime Video service has a few new series debuting, including “Riches.” Starring Deborah Ayorinde, from “Them,” the series is described as “a high-stakes family drama about the exploits of the stylish, privileged, and super-successful Richards siblings vying for control over the family business.”
The streamer also brings actor John Krasinski back into the world of Tom Clancy with the third season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” This installment finds CIA officer Jack Ryan wrongly accused of treason and on the run from his own government as he races against the clock to stop a global catastrophe. The season hits December 21.

Daniel Craig’s jump into superstardom by donning the 007 moniker was cloaked in the notion of a return to the Connery-era grit of James Bond with Casino Royale. Having been seen prior in movies like Layer Cake and Road to Perdition and eventually films like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Bond actor had sealed his image as a dramatic actor. Craig would show his comic prowess full stop as he would star in a comedy like Logan Lucky and play the straight-laced detective in a wild murder mystery in Knives Out.
Recently, Craig is making headlines thanks to a new, funky Vodka commercial that showcases the star twisting the night away. Variety reports on the image-changing effort from Craig as he’s directed by Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi. The ad sports a song by Waititi’s wife, pop singer Rita Ora, and features his signature humor.

The ‘Man of Steel’ star Henry Cavill was in the race to play the character of the legendary spy James Bond.
Henry got through to the final audition stage with just him and Daniel Craig in the running to play 007 but Henry eventually lost out when Bond bosses chose the more experienced ‘Layer Cake’ actor to play the superspy in 2006’s ‘Casino Royale’, reports Female First UK.
Henry has no qualms and maintains that the producers made the right choice. Speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, he explained: “They told me I was close. Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

Martin Campbell's take on the very first James Bond novel, "Casino Royale," had major work cut out for it. The film was coming off the heels of Pierce Brosnan's final outing as the British super spy, the financially successful but ridiculous "Die Another Day." Longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson wanted to bring the character back to basics, to take the world seriously, and to retrofit the Bond franchise with enough grit to compete with the darker spy thrillers of the aughts. Campbell was ideal for the job: he'd directed Brosnan in the grounded "GoldenEye," so it made perfect sense to bring him back for the new Bond.
Finding the actor who'd succeed Brosnan was also a no-brainer: Broccoli and Wilson only had eyes from Daniel Craig. The producers eventually got their wish, and Craig has since become the most beloved actor to slip into the...

Over the years, Matthew Vaughn has built a reputation as a decisive (if not a bit picky) filmmaker. He's known to choose his projects carefully, and he's never been afraid to step away from the director's chair if he doesn't like the direction things are taking. Creative control is important to Vaughn. It's why, despite a clear eye for glossy, stylized action franchises, he's walked away from several notable comic book movies. In another reality, Vaughn would have been the one ushering Thor into Marvel's Cinematic Universe. He was also initially attached to direct the third film in Bryan Singer's "X-Men" trilogy, fresh off his directorial debut with "Layer Cake."

Guy Ritchie's BAFTA Award-nominated crime comedy, "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," served as his directorial debut and the feature-film debut of Vinnie Jones and future action star Jason Statham. However, the movie and indeed their careers might have been confined to direct-to-video purgatory in 1998 if Tom Cruise hadn't come to the rescue.
Cruise was not involved with the making of "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels." He just happened to be acquainted with executive producer Trudi Styler. Matthew Vaughn, who would go on to become an accomplished director in his own right with films like "Layer Cake" and "X-Men: First Class," served as...

Exclusive: The feature take of Steve Stoliar’s memoir Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House is finally moving forward, with Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush set to play comedy legend Groucho Marx and Oscar nominee Oren Moverman directing off a screenplay he co-wrote with Stoliar.
Sienna Miller and Moonfall and All the Money in the World actor Charlie Plummer will also star in the Cold Iron Pictures project, which is produced by CEO Miranda Bailey and Moverman.
Set between 1973-1977, Raised Eyebrows follows Steve (Plummer) as he enters Groucho Marx’s house for his dream job of working for the aging, frail comedian, under the watchful eye of Erin Fleming (Miller), who had taken over the Marx brother’s personal and professional life. Marx and Fleming had a controversial relationship in his twilight years, she his devoted girlfriend-turned-manager. The power struggles result in a comedy of horrors in which obsession,...

In the most outlandish scene in “The King’s Man” — if not the strangest scene of the year — Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes), a sneaky aristocrat who will go on to form the first British secret-service agency (and is already acting like a rogue spy), shows up for a meeting with Grigori Rasputin, the fevered mystic and demonic holy man of Imperial Russia, played by Rhys Ifans as if he were starring in a historical thriller directed by Mel Brooks.
It’s the eve of World War I, and Orlando intends to exploit Rasputin’s considerable sway over the Tsar to convince Russia to enter the war. Hidden under Christlike hair and a fuzzy black beard, eyes ablaze with eroticized cunning, his Draculoid Row-shun accent dripping with sociopathic scorn, Ifans’ Rasputin enters a gilded party like a rock star draped with goth girls. At dinner, he explains to Orlando that he can...

Even before he was James Bond, Daniel Craig was making a name for himself as a talented actor on the rise. He’d already been in an action blockbuster (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) and an acclaimed period piece (“Elizabeth”) years before 007 came calling. And while he’s best known for his work in two franchises — Bond and “Knives Out,” which just wrapped the second of three planned films — here are some of his other roles that are worth checking out.
Road to Perdition (2002)
If Craig were to make this film today, he would be heralded for being cast against type — as Connor Rooney, the weak and sniveling son of a mob boss (Paul Newman) whose unpredictable nature sets the entire plot in motion. First, he botches a simple meeting by killing an associate. Then, out of jealousy and spite, he tries to kill his father’s beloved enforcer Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) and his family.
