Exclusive: As the Annecy Animation Film Festival gets underway this weekend, Warner Bros’ newly hired President of Feature Animation Bill Damaschke has announced a rebranding of the motion picture division with a focus on filmmakers.
Previously known as Wag, aka Warner Animation Group, the Burbank, CA lot’s feature toon unit will now be known as Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
“It’s honoring the past and rich history of the company. Warner Bros Pictures Animation released movies like Iron Giant, Space Jam, Corpse Bride, Polar Express, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie — benchmark films that broke new ground, new technology, new ways of telling stories and were successful, artistically and commercially. They last in people’s hearts, every one of those films,” said Damaschke about the label, which counts a filmmaker-driven original feature animated canon from such directors as Brad Bird, Tim Burton, George Miller, Robert Zemeckis, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Netflix always seems to know when it has a potential hit. Although the action-comedy sequel “Murder Mystery 2,” starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, was probably a no-brainer, the continuing success of the spy thriller series “The Night Agent” certainly must be a nice surprise. Read on for the Netflix Top 10 (Week of April 3) viewing chart analysis.
Last week, Season 1 of “The Night Agent” spent its third weekend as the #1 English language series on the streamer with 130.5 million global hours viewed, which was enough to put it into Netflix’s all-time most popular English shows in ninth place with 515.6 million total hours viewed worldwide. The show is in the top 10 in 92 countries, many of which it remains in the #1 spot. Wisely, Netflix has already greenlit a second season.
Season 4 of “Love is Blind” follows in second place with 43.1 million viewing hours. The season finale of the popular reality TV series will drop this coming Friday,...

The Night Agent is officially one of Netflix‘s most popular series of all time.
The series pulled in 130.48M hours viewed and remained atop the English-language TV List for the week of April 3 to April 9. It has now tallied 515.57M hours viewed since its release on March 23, placing it at No. 9 among the list of the streamer’s Most Popular List.
The Night Agent bumped Ginny & Georgia Season 2, which had 504M hours viewed in its first 28 days, off the Most Popular list. It replaced Inventing Anna, which now sits in 10th place. The series still has about a week left to continue climbing up the list, as Netflix measures its most popular series only based on wasthe first 28 days of viewership.
At this rate, the series starring Gabriel Basso is tracking to potentially land in Netflix’s all-time Top 5 series by the time its measurement window is over.

Two major hits debuted for home viewing this week, with very different gaps between their theatrical releases and PVOD availability. “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney), which appeared after 100 days and $680 million in domestic gross, is currently #1 everywhere. “Creed III” (MGM) arrived after only 28 days to place #2, also on all charts. “The Way of Water” is available to buy for $19.99, while “Creed III” can only be rented for 48 hours.
Also debuting is “Champions”, consistent with the company’s usual post-third weekend release. It made two lists, as high as #4 at Vudu. Vudu also has the latest DC Comics home video original “Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham” (Warner Bros. Discovery) at #9 for $14.99.
Two films that made all three lists are now available at $5.99 with “A Man Called Otto” (Sony) and “Puss in Boots: The Last Exit” (Universal). “Cocaine Bear” (Universal), still at $19.99, also made all three and charted as high as #3 at Vudu.

In the far-reaching pantheon of comedy stars, few possess the same sometimes-subtle, sometimes-explosive style as Steve Carell. First glimpsed by audiences as a cast member on 1996's short-lived comedy vehicle "The Dana Carvey Show," the Massachusetts-born actor grabbed the attention of comedy fans during a six-year stint as a correspondent on "The Daily Show with John Stewart." This desk time helped him transition nicely into another news-related role: the career-hungry anchor Evan in Jim Carrey's "Bruce Almighty" in 2003 before Carell showed us how goofy he could be in 2004's cult-classic "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy."
However, one role beats all others when combining the many talents Carell has stuffed under his belt (that's what she said). Of course, it's Michael Scott, Dunder Mifflin's cringe-king boss and America's answer to Ricky Gervais's David Brent. Throughout nine seasons of "The Office," Scott helped Carell showcase tonnes of humor and...

The year is 3042, and the Earth has been destroyed. 15 years ago, humankind unveiled a mysterious and powerful technology called the Titan Project. Its true nature is not revealed immediately, but a species of envious aliens made of pure energy, the Drej, fear it and have destroyed humankind in defense. Now, the galaxy's remaining humans roam the cosmos as outcasts, forced to take odd jobs on freighters. A young human named Cale (Matt Damon) has taken a job on a vessel called the Valkyrie, where he works alongside a smarmy bat alien named Preedex (Nathan Lane), a kooky frog-like scientist named Gune (John Leguizamo), a bitter and angry kangaroo-like engineer named Stith (Janeanne Garofalo), a human pilot named Akima (Drew Barrymore), and the heroic Captain Korso (Bill Pullman). Together, they travel the stars avoiding Drej and following an obscure map to the location of the Titan, the ship that still contains Earth's technological breakthrough.

At least now a group of former DreamWorks creators who still value the sacredness of childhood are stepping in to balance out the playing field with a Paddington-esque Winnie the Pooh prequel.

In the days leading up to today's Cannes 2022 lineup reveal, much of the conversation ended up revolving around which movies wouldn't be partaking in the respected and prestigious film festival. Sadly, it would seem that rumors of a new David Lynch movie filmed in total secrecy and set to premiere at Cannes were greatly exaggerated. After going without a host at the 93rd annual Academy Awards in 2021, as well as during the Oscars ceremonies in 2020 and 2019, this year’s big movie night is swinging things in the other direction. Three individuals are set to share hosting duties for the 94th Academy Awards on March 27: Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer have all been tapped to steward the event.
Perhaps in an effort to increase fledgling ratings, the three women will also have a prime platform to entertain audiences both inside of the Dolby Theatre and at home by showcasing their distinctive comedy chops. While the Oscars routinely go back to the well with multi-time hosts like Billy Crystal and Jimmy Kimmel, this will be the first opportunity for all three women, and it will be exciting to see how the multi-tiered, fresh approach works.

The Coen brothers regular plays a delusional ex-librarian who goes questing on a motorbike and sidecar in this good-natured retelling of the classic adventure
Set in the present day, in some American backwoods town where the accents have a softly southern cadence, this likable effort reworks Miguel de Cervantes’s immortal much-adapted novel with veteran character actor and Coen brothers regular Tim Blake Nelson in the title role. It is written and directed by Chris Poche, at the helm for the first time after writing duties on an assortment of animated features including Hoodwinked and Over the Hedge. Poche’s iteration of Quixote imagines the hero, Danny Kehoe, as an unemployed ex-librarian living with his niece Janelle (Ann Mahoney). He is delusional and disturbed rather than, as other versions have posited, having dementia.
As Kehoe burrows deeper into his fantasy world, he becomes convinced he is a medieval knight, and,...

Debra Wilson, one of the original cast members on “MADtv,” said that she left the sketch comedy series in 2003 after hearing about a pay disparity between her and the white male actors that joined the cast after her. In an interview with Comedy Hype News, Wilson revealed the showrunners were unwilling to bump her pay or address the issue after bringing it to their attention.
“I was a tenured cast member from the beginning, from pilot, and people were coming in after me making more than me,” Wilson said. “And when I realized there were white male cast members who were coming in after me making more than me I went, ‘Okay, can we talk about this?’ And the answer essentially was no.”

Although it still has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix, HBO Max is gradually building a reputation for both an impressive library of content and its own original programming. As well as reportedly working on a number of Batman-focused series, the WarnerMedia streamer is also absorbing shows from DC Universe, and funding the Snyder Cut of Justice League. We now know what’s coming to HBO Max in September, and there’s plenty there for subscribers to sink their teeth into.
The big original series highlight next month is the Ridley Scott-produced Raised by Wolves, which explores two androids raising human children. Created by Adam Guzikowski, the program could be one of HBO Max’s first big hits with critics and audiences, and is set to arrive on September 3rd. For producer Bonnie Arnold, saying goodbye to the world of How to Train Your Dragon has been bittersweet. Bringing three films to life over the past 13 years, Arnold aimed to be as creatively bold with series closer The Hidden World as she had been with the prior two films, sticking to her guns with an ending that felt right, as sad as it was.
A coming-of-age trilogy directed by Dean DeBlois, based on books by Cressida Cowell, the How to Train Your Dragon films centered on Hiccup, a hapless young Viking who initially dreamed of hunting dragons, before developing a life-changing friendship with Toothless, a dragon of his own. In the third film, which debuted in February, Hiccup and Toothless are all grown up, chasing after a secret Dragon Utopia called The Hidden World, while ultimately coming to realize that their lives may be taking them in different directions.

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish are proving to be an irresistible combination at the box office. The comic stars joined forces for “Night School,” a Universal Pictures comedy that picked up $1.35 million in previews on Thursday night.
“Night School” is expected to top the box office charts this weekend, eyeing a debut between $27 million and $35 million. It has some formidable competition, however. “Smallfoot,” the animated Warner Bros. release about an adorable Yeti, picked up $850,000 in Thursday previews. The family film is expected to generate around $25 million when it bows on over 4,000 screens. “Night School” has fewer venues — it will be in 2,900 theaters.
“Night School” reunites Haddish with “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer. She portrays a teacher who helps Hart earn his GED. The movie cost $29 million to produce.

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish are hoping that big laughs equal big bucks when “Night School” opens this weekend. Before the comedic duo can claim box office victory, however, they’ll have to fend off one adorable Yeti.
Universal’s “Night School” is eyeing a debut between $27 million and $35 million from 2,900 theaters. The film reunites Haddish with “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer. The PG-13 comedy finds Haddish playing an unorthodox teacher helping Hart get his Ged. If estimates hold, the launch of “Night School” looks to be on par with “Girls Trip’s” $30 million start. That raunchy comedy became a sleeper hit, grossing over $140 million worldwide off its $19 million budget. “Night School” has a slightly higher price tag at $29 million.
Hart has long been a box office draw, but “Night School” will test the star power of Haddish in her first lead role since breaking...

Producers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra have generally kept a wide berth between their kid-friendly projects and their more adult material. The best parts of “Smallfoot” see them finding a middle ground, espousing plot points and messaging that you don’t usually find in family fare.
Lurking within this animated tale of yetis and humans are such forward-thinking notions as, “Question everything, including religion,” “Governments use public safety as an excuse for misleading the populace when they really just want to control people,” and “Tribalism benefits people in power more than the communities they claim to want to protect.”
Heady stuff for a mainstream cartoon, but unfortunately “Smallfoot” can’t bear the weight of its big ideas, saddled as it is with fairly mediocre animation, mostly forgettable songs and a resolutely by-the-numbers screenplay by director Karey Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge”) and Clare Sera, adapting Sergio Pablos’ book “Yeti Tracks.”

Release dates are sometimes more interesting than their movies.
The simple answer for how a movie like The Boss Baby opens at number one is that it’s a major studio animated feature debuting in late March. Specific to this movie, however, there are certain special circumstances, like Beauty and the Beast finally dropping enough to give something else a shot and Ghost in the Shell being a flop, possibly due to its whitewashing casting controversy and possibly just due to its just not being very good.
March is a tricky month for movie releases. With Easter having an unfixed date falling either in March or April, there’s sometimes a holiday weekend, albeit not one typically known for moviegoing. Also, much of America’s children have a spring break, yet there’s no uniformity from county to county within any given state let alone across the country (many states and school districts also wait until April...

What appears on the page is not always what appears on the screen. The screenwriter has most times defined what he/she hopes to see translated, but that’s not always the case (and when it isn’t, it’s usually for the worse). However, sometimes a film will morph from the pen to the multiplex in a post-faithful state that exceeds expectations. One such film is The Pit (1981), a Canadian made, Us lensed flick that started out as a psychological breakdown of a delusional little boy, and ended up in B Movie Heaven, where it is personally fanned and fed grapes by Ed Wood and William Castle on a daily basis. There’s no other film quite like it.

Sony's The Angry Birds Movie took the number one spot at the domestic box office this weekend, pushing two-time champion, Captain America: Civil War, to second place as it begins its third week in release. Civil War's weekend, however, wasn't only about the domestic box office as it has now become the first 2016 release to cross $1 billion worldwide, doing so in just 24 days of global release. The weekend's two other new wide releases, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys, finished in third and fourth position respectively. Also, X-Men: Apocalypse launched overseas one week ahead of its domestic debut and hauled in over $100 million. Based on Rovio's mobile game application, Angry Birds finished just ahead of weekend tracking with an estimated $39 million. The best comparison from a performance standpoint is 2006's Over the Hedge, which also opened the week before Memorial Day weekend and scored a $38.4 million opening. That film,...

'Neighbors 2' Tops Thursday Previews with $1.67M, 'Angry Birds' Hits $800k & 'Nice Guys' Finish Last
It could be a photo finish atop this weekend's box office charts as Captain America: Civil War will attempt to hold off Sony's Angry Birds. Meanwhile, Universal's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising faces a situation where the sequel isn't likely to top the original and Warner Bros. is hoping for the best with The Nice Guys, which has enjoyed the best reviews among the weekend's new wide releases, but finds itself jostling for attention among several higher profile releases. The fight atop the box office will have a lot to do with whether or not Sony's Angry Birds is able to breakout as it charges into 3,932 theaters. Based on Rovio's mobile platform video game, the 3D animated feature carries a $73 million budget and a strong ensemble of comedic voice talent. The budgetary figure places it in the same range as Illumination's Despicable Me franchise of films, the first of which was...

Comedian, actor, writer and producer Garry Shandling has died, at an L.A. hospital on Thursday, at the age of 66 reports TMZ.
A cause of death has not yet been released, but the actor was not known to be suffering from any illnesses, in fact a few days ago he retweeted Kathy Griffin's photo of himself, her and "Better Call Saul" star Bob Odenkirk which you can see below.
Chicago-born Shandling got his start as a writer before creating the sitcom "It's Garry Shandling's Show" at Showtime in which he played a stand-up comedian aware of the fact that he is a sitcom character.
He shot to global fame though with HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show" which ran throughout much of the 1990s in which he played the host of a fictional late-night talk show. He subsequently appeared or lent his voice to numerous films including "Zoolander," "Over the Hedge,...

Talk about a character! Home director Tim Johnson is as bright and energetic as one of his animated creations. A nice surprise when the majority of Hollywood helmers can't exactly be considered the lives of the party. Johnson, who previously co-directed Antz, Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas and Over The Hedge, goes solo for the first time on Home, Dreamworks' adventure about the friendship between an awkward extraterrestrial (Jim Parsons) and a teenage human (Rihanna). A genuinely good guy,...

The latest 3D computer-animated film for kids from embattled DreamWorks Animation isn’t likely to rake in “Shrek”-sized dollars, or to make a critical splash like “How to Train Your Dragon.” At the same time, “Home” with its gentle and genial sense of both humor and action, will divert young children remarkably well, from the sci-fi slapstick to the deftly-handled deeper emotions. Perhaps the greatest portion of the credit for “Home” should go to director Tim Johnson (“Antz,” “Over the Hedge”), who’s created an animated film with clarity and comedy to support the morals and the message.
