The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”
This year’s main competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig and including J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sy, will name its winners on Saturday.
It was looking like a foregone conclusion that the Palme d’Or win would be bestowed upon Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, which was picked up by Netflix. However, on Friday, Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” garnered the most enthusiastic reactions on social media from attendees and the longest-standing ovation at 12 minutes. 9-1-1 never shies away from character-centric hours, with its 'Begins' episodes notable for delving deeper into the pasts of its main characters.
'Bobby Begins Again' during 9-1-1 Season 2 was Bobby's turn. This installment showed the devasting events in Minnesota, ultimately leading to his moving out west to restart his life in Los Angeles.
But we didn't know much about Bobby's life before that, not until 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 8 gave us a peek into Bobby's early years, which have profoundly impacted the man he's become.
There's a lot crammed into this hour, and instead of easing into the Bobby and Amir of it all, they decided to begin with the scenes detailed in the trailer, which gave all the insight we needed about the connection between the two men.
Bobby's continued struggle with his past has been highlighted throughout the series, as grief, loss, and trauma are central to who Bobby is.

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

Love is what many of us are inadvertently drawn to within the series.
But it also garners the most drama, and some of it is contrived and unnecessary.
It is far too familiar now for television series to put some of the most notable couples through the wringer for the sole purpose of angst and drama. Yes, we're looking at you, Chenford.
Unfortunately, the status quo for many series has become putting interesting characters together and then showing how terribly they are at conflict resolution.
It's like series are so determined to capitalize off the drama and angst within relationships that they don't even bother investing in any other angle.
It's become frustrating that series have resorted to the same patterns when showcasing their couples and what they go through rather than delivering on the more realistic and inspiring option of serving as positive examples for relationships.

In his over half-a-century-long Hindi film career, he sang more than a thousand songs, but just three serve to demonstrate his position in the industry’s scheme of things – the madcap “Ek Chatur Naar” where Kishore Kumar beats him; the enchanting qawwali “Na to karvaan ki talash hai” where Mohammed Rafi emerges triumphant eventually; and the classical contest “Ketaki gulab juhi”, where he beats Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
This was part of the misfortune of Prabodh Chandra ‘Manna’ Dey, born on this day (May 1) in 1919 in Calcutta. His classical training, innate talent, and “masculine” voice made him perfect for all shades of songs – romantic (including those for the vintage-aged), folk ballads, philosophical musings, and more, but he was never deemed a top-notch singer.
A nephew of gifted blind singer-composer Krishna Chandra Dey, who paved his way into music and films, Manna Dey’s forte was challenging, classical-based songs, especially those that his contemporaries considered difficult,...

Tiny Pretty Things alum Barton Cowperthwaite revealed on Friday that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, saying doctors found “at least a stage 2” glioma — a growth of cells that starts in the brain or spinal cord.
“It is a fairly decent sized brain tumor,” Cowperthwaite, 31, wrote on Instagram. “The tumor’s cells originate in the brain, so it’s not spread from a cancer anywhere else in the body.”

There were countless moments to choose from, but this list encompasses the moments that have helped shape both the characters and the series to this point. Make sure to sound off in the comments with anything we may have missed!

Colman Domingo has more than earned the awards season he’s about to have. This great American actor, who is perhaps best known for his Emmy-winning turn on HBO’s Euphoria, has been doing standout work on stage and screen for decades, but not until George C. Wolfe’s Rustin — which had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday and screened again here, at the Chuck Jones Cinema, on Friday — was he ever given the chance to play the lead in a major motion picture. Unsurprisingly, he made the very most of the opportunity, which reunited him with his Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom director, and he now seems well on his way to a best actor Oscar nomination.

When nothing works, how to make things work? No filmmaker, nor trade pundits have ever been able to predict this. In fact, there have been many instances of some film critics who could not predict a film’s success after watching it! Let alone film critics, even distributors who rejected a film after seeing it, have been proved wrong. In those days, a film was open for all distributors to watch during various stages of its making or even when completed. Many a time, a film thus rejected went on to become a blockbuster.
There were no buyers for ‘Zanjeer’, the Amitabh Bachchan blockbuster. The producer had to sell it for a song where the terms let the distributor keep the entire profit, instead of sharing it 50-50 with the producer as per the norm.

‘Bhed Chaal’ is a Hindi proverb very much used in relation to the Hindi film industry. It means that one huge success is followed by numerous other attempts. Original ideas are at a premium in the Hindi film industry. The makers either depend on a foreign film, or a novel, or a South Indian film for a subject.
Filmmakers always want to play safe because the risk factor is always high. The distributor, while being wined and dined, gets a sales pitch, like “Zanjeer se kam nahi hamari picture…” and such. Many smaller-budget imitations of ‘Sholay’, ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewaar’ and other such films flooded the market. That is to say, if one action film worked, many more were certain to follow.

Kapadia had a pivotal role in Disney’s 2022 mythological superhero film “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.” In 2023, the actor had meaty roles in two of the year’s biggest Bollywood hits, “Pathaan” and “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.” And, taking a leaf from the Helen Mirren playbook, Kapadia took an action-heavy headline role in streamer Disney+ Hotstar’s patriarchy shattering drama series “Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo,” which released in May.
The series revolves around four women, the matriarch Savitri (Kapadia), her daughters-in-law and her daughter, who live in a forgotten village in the northwest of India. Savitri runs the Rani Cooperative, trading in products ranging from balms to textiles. But everything here isn’t what it seems – the cottage business is a front for the biggest drug cartel in South Asia.
