Bill Murray revisited one of his most beloved roles Tuesday night at the August Wilson Theater in New York City, where he watched the musical adaptation of “Groundhog Day.” Joining Murray were his brother, Brian Doyle-Murray, who played Buster in the original film, and screenwriter Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the 1993 film as well as the Broadway adaptation.

In spring 2007, American Idol had what could be called its Donald Trump moment.
The sixth season of Fox's make-me-a-pop-superstar/talent-show juggernaut had acquainted millions of Americans with a contestant named Sanjaya Malakar. He was a sweet, mildly talented and – at some fundamental level – rather silly 17-year-old. Judge Simon Cowell regarded him as a waste of time and undeserving of a continued spot on the Idol stage.
And yet he stayed. Viewers kept voting to keep him in the competition. Why?

How does a composer create musical voices for a population of yellow creatures who speak their own language? If you’re Grammy Award-winning musician/composer/songwriter Heitor Pereira, it’s one groovy journey.
Playing in theaters now, Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he – alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob – ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain.

Making a good mix tape takes some skill. Making a great mix tape is a work of art. In order to make a great mix you need to listen to a wide range of artists. You also need to consider the audience. In other words, who are you making the mix for? It’s always smart to select music that you are guaranteed meets the tastes of the listener, but it also good to experiment and include some tracks that they may have never heard otherwise. Creating a message with the mix is also a plus, and I personally love to add tons of movie clips as an added bonus. There has to be a specific flow as well. Pacing is essential in creating a mood (or moods), but you don’t want any of the juxtapositions to be too jarring. And as with any form of editing, you need...

Rocksmith 2014 Edition, the sequel to the self-teaching guitar experience from 2011, is being released next Tuesday and it’ll be armed with 55 songs. Ubisoft released the entire tracklist ahead of the October 22nd launch today and Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC gamers will be treated to the likes of Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, Queen and The Police, among other top artists from the golden years of rock.
Ubisoft also announced that downloadable songs purchased for the first game will be compatible with Rocksmith 2014 Edition. There will also be the option to import the disc-based songs from the original Rocksmith to play in the new sequel, but there will be a nominal fee charged for the privilege.

Set in a luxury high-rise building, the book follows a group of affluent tenants hell-bent on an orgy of destruction. Cocktail parties degenerate into marauding attacks on ‘enemy’ floors and the once-luxurious amenities become an arena for technological mayhem.

Heavy Metal is a broad term and a very broad church: there are umpteen variations on its basic theme and there are sub genres galore. However, the single thread which binds these disparate pieces is a loud, overdriven, distorted guitar wielded with intent. Non fans traditionally are quick to dismiss the music as entirely without merit and at this point I’ll say hello to Jason Isaacs who recently described the peerless Lamb Of God as, “People having some kind of epileptic fit in charge of a guitar.” Of course, the perpetual allure of Heavy Metal is that outsiders, such as Mr Isaacs, just don’t get it and for this reason it remains a consistently popular form of music, constantly shifting its shape to adapt to the times whilst managing to maintain its core appeal of rebellion.
Despite its foremost protagonists being American, heavy metal is essentially a British creation.

A pioneer of both progressive rock and heavy metal, keyboardist Jon Lord—best known for his work with Deep Purple—died Monday in London of complications resulting from pancreatic cancer. He was 71. Like many British keyboardists who came into prominence in the late ’60s, Lord cut his teeth on classical music before starting his career in various jazz and blues bands. He moved on to rock ’n’ roll session work—including a credit on The Kinks’ 1964 classic, “You Really Got Me”—and played in various short-lived groups like Santa Barbara Machine Head, which featured The Creation’s Kim ...

The fifth season of AMC's "Mad Men" came to a close Sunday night, wrapping up what has been arguably among its strongest seasons yet. No small feat considering the show has taken home four consecutive Emmys for Best Drama and been proclaimed one of the best shows on TV by nearly every critic reviewing the medium. After a run of 13 almost uniformly excellent episodes, it becomes harder to remember that this season had gotten off to a rocky start. When the network decided to pull the show out of its summer slot to make room for the other best show on TV ("Breaking Bad"), fans had to endure a brutal 17-month wait. Contract negotiations between creator Matthew Weiner and the studio were made public and gave both the network and creator some negative buzz to overcome.

Jaguar. Joan. Megan. Peggy. Women. Sex. Power. Framed by the Jaguar pitch, "The Other Woman" is a beautifully brutal depiction of prostitution -- cracking open a theme deeply embedded in the series, but never truly explored. Don's mother was a prostitute, all the men sleep with prostitutes. Our beloved Sal was fired for not sleeping with Lee Garner Jr. and Pete even suggested his wife (!) sleep with an editor to get his short story published back in Season 1. Opening with Don, Ginzo and a bunch of male freelancers throwing around the idea of Jaguar as your gorgeous mistress, the episode immediately turns women into possessions as the "beautiful yet unreliable" objects of desire. Don tells the team it's too vulgar to actually use the word mistress, but unlike their campaign, this episode slaps us in the face with the ugly reality behind the desperation and degradation that can come with the business of business,...

"When I wrote 120 Malay Movies I tried to watch all of the 34 movies that P Ramlee directed. I almost succeeded." Amir Muhammad (The Last Communist, Malaysian Gods) would eventually see 33; Sitora Harimau Jadian (1964) seems to have been lost. He tells us the story of how he came upon what amounts to P Ramlee's own novelization of Sitora Harimau Jadian, "describing what happens in his movie, scene by scene. The book is slim, only 124 pages, and I'm glad it was also fleshed out with pictures from the movie (which might be the only chance we will ever get to 'see' it)." "You Really Got Me," named after arguably the band's most popular single (besides perhaps "Lola"), will concentrate on the rock group founded by brothers Ray and Dave Davies that recorded such '60s pop ditties as "All Day and All of the Night" and "A Well Respected Man" before moving on to harder-edged '70s tracks such as "Low Budget" and "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" and finally becoming MTV darlings with Top 40 '80s hits like "Come Dancing" and "Don't Forget to Dance."

The success of well-received ghost tale "The Woman In Black" has benefited pretty much everyone: Star Daniel Radcliffe has proven he can be a viable lead outside of the "Harry Potter" franchise, revived horror label Hammer Films has taken its place again at the top of the British genre tree (the picture has taken £20 million at the U.K. box office, making it the most successful home-grown horror picture ever), and director James Watkins has undoubtedly landed himself on the top of many wishlists.
Watkins, who made his debut with the Michael Fassbender-starring hoodie horror picture "Eden Lake," has sci-fi actioner "Methuselah" in the works from 'Potter' producer David Heyman, but it looks like that won't be his next picture: Screen Daily reports that he's changing lanes, excuse the pun, to direct the based-in-fact sports drama "Second Is Nowhere" for BBC Films and Al Films.

It was just like old times on Thursday (Jan. 5) at New York club Cafe Wah? when a reconstituted Van Halen kicked off their 2012 arena tour with an intimate show, original frontman David Lee Roth and a set chock full of classics.
"Last time I stood on a stage this low, we had to have the car back by midnight, man!" said Roth from the stage.
The band ripped through a set including hits like "You Really Got Me," "Panama," Jump" and "Every Wants Some," reports Billboard.com. They also played one new song ("She's the Woman") from their upcoming new studio album, "A Different Kind of Truth."
There was one change to the line-up, though -- bassist Michael Anthony who was booted from the band in 2006 was replaced by Eddie Van Halen's 20-year-old son, Wolfgang. Roth, too, struck a different tone with a new look that we like to...

New York (AP) — They'll be playing arenas when they tour next month, but on Thursday night, a regrouped Van Halen provided thrills in a tiny club where a VIP crowd stood elbow to elbow as the storied band played some of their greatest hits including "Jump" and "Panama." It happened one fateful evening in New York back in 2009. Both Metallica and Lou Reed were on hand for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts, and after crossing paths back stage, realized they wanted to make more music together. "Lulu" is the resultant album that chance encounter yielded.
Reed asked Metallica, the exalted rulers of heavy metal, to help him provide a soundtrack to his theatrical piece of the same name. Last May, the two musical forces came together to create ten eclectic songs that sound like nothing you've heard from Metallica before.
But Metallica are no strangers to collaboration. In fact, the band -- and its members -- have teamed up with some other unlikely (and other, likely) collaborations in their past. Here's a look back at five Metallica musical pairings you may not have known about.
And don't forget to check back at 10am Est Saturday on IFC.

It’s down to six groups on The Sing-Off, and on tonight’s episode (airing at 8/7 Central on NBC) the remaining acts will each perform two numbers: one classic rock song and one country tune. Opening Number: “Wake Up,” Arcade Fire
Classic Rock
Pentatonix: “Born to Be Wild,” Steppenwolf
Dartmouth Aires: “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” Twisted Sister
Afro-Blue: “American Girl,” Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

I have to say, I'm surprised it took six episodes, but we're now officially embroiled in "The Vampire Diaries" ghost story... and the Mikael story... and the sire story... and the Ripper story... seriously, how does this show have so much going on all at once? Remember when it was about a girl who fell in love with a vampire and had to deal with his pain-in-the-butt brother?
I'm kidding, Damon fans. Retract your claws!
Tonight's episode was another one that left us reeling, and despite all the action, it also gave us a chance to really savor performances and small character moments... and we finally got a full introduction to the new (and improved, if you ask me) version of a certain Stefan Salvatore.
Time to jump in... or back-handspring in, as the case may be.

Jonjo Kerr has claimed that Gary Barlow wanted him off The X Factor because he was a threat. Soldier Kerr was one of the first four acts voted off the ITV1 show last night, alongside Amelia Lily, 2 Shoes and James Michael. Having now become completely addicted to watching this show every flaming year, despite my better judgement I might add given the distinct lack of market impact any of the winners ever have after the dust has settled and Simon Cowell has dragged his massive bulging bag of money to the bank, I’m beginning to get frustrated with the set-up. It’s all very predictable. Even when the show introduces these cut-throat “twists” like this week’s revelatory Judge Vote Off Bonanaza, or whatever they want to call it.
Aside from the fact that the decision robs the paying, voting public the opportunity to support acts that they have seen develop into justified Finalists (on the Judges’ terms anyway – I’m still massively irked that Terry, and even more profoundly Jade were turned away) – the whole thing feels like forced drama for the sake of it. It should be a talent show,...

The Guitar Hero franchise is finished. Or at least, it’s retiring, without much hope of a reunion tour. Activision Blizzard just released their latest investor report, and nestled in the fine print — underneath excessive fist-pumping for the monstrously successful World of Warcraft and Call of Duty franchises — you find the epitaph for one of the most influential series in videogame history: “Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.”

Steven Tyler officially has Zap2it's approval as a suitable Simon Cowell replacement on "American Idol." He's funny, he's crazy, he's unpredictable, he drops F-bombs, and he's probably going to get slapped with a sexual harassment suit before we meet the Top 12, but we love it. (Besides, if Donald Trump can get away with creepy, so can Tyler -- at least Tyler is endearing about it.)
In celebration of our new favorite judge - who, by the way, is still looking pretty good for a 62-year-old with a rather colorful past - we thought we'd sift through some previous Tyler/Idol fun and dig up some past performances of Aerosmith's greatest hits.
First up is Adam Lambert's glammed-up version of "Cryin'" from Season 8 - with his riffs and screams, he gave Tyler a run for his money. Lambert, who came in second after Kris Allen in his season,...

Metallica claim The Kinks' track "You Really Got Me" "chose them" when asked to cover one of the band's tracks. The heavy metal band were approached by the 60s group's frontman, Ray Davies, to record a version of one of his songs, and Metallica frontman James Hetfield said he knew instinctively which track the group would pick. He said, "This song chose us, not the other way around."
Ray explained how Metallica could see a clear link between their thrash metal styling and the sound which he established, particularly in his heavy, distorted guitar sounds, with his band on their record, released in 1964. He said, "They saw it as a direct link between what The Kinks started out doing and what became heavy metal."
Ray also enjoyed the recording process with Metallica, which took place in Oslo, Norway. He added, "We'd socialized a bit in the past and had played...

The Belle Amie girls admitted that they had some problem arranging their song for tonight’s show, and their Vt showed the girls rowing over who gets to sing the lead vocals.
The judges seemed unimpressed with their strop so we were hoping they performed well enough to make them forget the blip!
Looking pretty hot, the group strutted onto the stage and Rebecca launched into “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks. It was a rubbish song choice and the girls had little to no enthusiasm for the track. I know that all four of Belle Amie are fantastic singers but somehow, they aren’t being showcased properly at all.
Judges Comments:
Louis: So much better than last week. You’ve bonded and you actually look like the next big girlband. You remind me so much of a young Girls Aloud, same sort of styling, same type of vibe.

Former The Kinks bassist Pete Quaife has died, aged 66. The musician, who founded the group with school pals Ray and Dave Davies and drummer Mick Avory in 1962, passed away on Thursday, June 24.
His cause of death is not yet known, although Quaife had been undergoing kidney dialysis since 1998 after suffering renal failure. The bassist featured on The Kinks' early records, including the 1964 hit "You Really Got Me", before briefly quitting in 1966 after a car accident left him unable to perform. He rejoined the band but was permanently replaced by John Dalton in 1969.
Quaife last played with The Kinks in 1990 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Frontman Ray Davies reportedly asked Quaife to rejoin the band to record new music in 2008 but he declined the offer, releasing a statement saying he was stepping out of the spotlight for good.

Overall, it's a pretty forgettable batch of new releases in stores today, but there is always the chance to catch up on something you missed in theatres whether it be Clint Eastwood's Invictus, all-star rom-com Valentine's Day, or The Spy Next Door starring Jackie Chan. Harrison Ford works around the clock in Extraordinary Measures and Kevin Costner moves into a haunted house in the direct-to-dvd horror movie The New Daughter, but my pick of the week would be Oscar-nominated indie drama The Messenger starring Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster. Also out this week is the Criterion release of Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout, Carlito's Way on Blu-ray, and the complete series of Morgan Spurlock's FX reality show 30 Days.
