OK behind-the-scenes porn feature
lor_3 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
THE ALLEYCAT peeks behind the scenes of making porn films with mediocre results. I'll be watching the Something Weird version soon, after suffering through a horrible Secret Key Motion Picutres edition.

Secret Key is one of the labels of Seduction/After Hours Cinema, and though many of their prints are execrable, this one hits a new low in subjecting a Hollywood porn movie to Japanese-style optical censorship! Even though this is a softcore version, all male genitalia is blurred with those foggy cells any fan of Japanese adult anime or soft porn has seen ruining those imports. The New Jersey boys have also added a very boring new musical score and chosen to show a 1:33 to 1 ratio movie at 1.78:1. Thanks a bunch!

John Keith stars as a struggling screenwriter named Book (clever!) whose girl friend Chessie (full name: Chessie Kate, for Alice in Wonderland fans), is played by the delightful Sandy Dempsey. She tells him of a "date" she had, cueing flashback of full-frontal nudity and a simulated blow job.

Keith's office set is very cheap -either he's working from home, or the set dresser was on strike. A second flashback is a roughie scene, with Sandy beaten up and thrown out by a trick -this recollection supposedly will inspire Keith to write a new script. For a brief serious moment, Sandy ponders her life, while gazing in a mirror.

Keith has sold a script and arranges a movie audition for Sandy, who hopes to exchange prostitution for an acting gig (one wonders how self-referential this film is becoming).

The director of porn Mark Essex is played pompously by the excellent Norman Fields, quite convincingly, wearing a beret. Suzanne Fields pops up in a supporting part, taking still photos of Sandy and then humping Norman (no relation) in his office. There follows a threesome scene of Suzanne, Sandy and a stud, including lesbian sex.

SPOILER ALERT:

After watching the filming of porn, Keith back home announces a legit screen writing contract. Suddenly serious, he professes his love to Sandy, and there occurs a stock footage sequence depicting "a night on the town" -embarrassingly phony. He's drunk when they arrive back home, and Sandy tries to arouse him by striking alluring poses. When he wakes up from his stupor, he finds a note from selfless Sandy, indicating that she loves him but doesn't want to saddle him with a loser like her. What a finish!

The Something Weird version issued on Vol. 155 of the Dragon Art Theatre series is uncensored, with original soundtrack, but has many brief hardcore XXX inserts included. They do not match the actors or actresses of the principal photography (for example, Suzanne Fields' hardcore double is wearing a ring during a fellatio insert closeup, while Fields has no ring in the master shots), strictly tight closeups of generic porn. Since the stars of this movie made many XXX movies, this odd "spicing it up" afterthought footage is jarring -they should have shot it hardcore in the first place.
