Movie sequels are big business for Hollywood. Many fans are getting burnt-out on sequels, especially since so many of them are unnecessary. Still, let’s not forget that when they’re done right, sequels can be great. Here are a dozen of the greatest sequels ever made.
12. Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan (1982): Still the best of all the Star Trek films, this excellent sequel corrected everything that went wrong with its disappointing predecessor, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The action, the humor and the character interactions were all excellent. The comparisons to Moby Dick gave it a literary flavor, and Ricardo Montalban was fantastic as the villain, Khan Noonien Singh. The death of Spock was a surprise to long-time fans, even if it didn’t last. This film made the Trek film franchise fun and set the standard for the future films.

If you thought that Robert De Niro had mellowed in his old age, think again. His new film with Luc Besson is feistily violent and he still hankers after making a sequel to Taxi Driver
To misquote Bananarama, Robert De Niro is waiting inside the hotel room, talking on his phone, though probably not in Italian. I'm outside with the PR, who keeps easing open the door to check if he's done. The publicist is starstruck; he doesn't want to intrude. He explains that he grew up watching De Niro movies and that Taxi Driver is basically the reason he got into this business to begin with. We agree that it's wise to make no mention of this. He might shut the door and lock us out altogether.
De Niro is in town to discuss his new role as an ageing bull in a witness protection programme, and this seems fitting.

Question: I’m a huge fan of Tina Majorino, and I loved her on Grey’s Anatomy last season. I know she has her own show on TNT now, but do you have any intel on whether she’ll be back for at least one or two episodes this season? I especially like her boss/student relationship with Meredith. —Ingmar
Ausiello: Majorino’s Heather will appear in the two-hour season premiere, which picks up right where last May’s cliffhanger left off.

It has been a hell of a millennium so far for Superhero movies after a less than impressive 1990s and, quite frankly, a downright embarrassing 1980s. Should we even mention the 70s or 60s? We as a species have finally figured out how to make awesome movies with super-powered heroes and villains. Thanks be to Galactus.
These were the stories that defined my childhood. I wasn’t running around my house pretending to be John Wayne or a fireman or an astronaut. I was pretending to be the Incredible Hulk. So to see the ongoing crapfest during my childhood that was visiting the cinema each year, particularly with my favorite brand (Marvel), was in a word … heartbreaking.
There were baby steps along the way, small moments of brilliance amid a desolate wasteland of fetid turds. Hits such as Superman (1978), of course The Incredible Hulk serial (1978-82), Batman (1989), and Blade (1998). At last,...

Franc Roddam has directed award-winning documentaries and dramas for British television and mini-series for Us television, and is the founder and chairman of Ziji Publishing, whose roster includes the five million selling novel The Last Templar.
He is best known however as the creator of the international television phenomenon ‘Masterchef’, which is shown in 150 countries, and as the director of the much loved feature film adaptation of The Who’s Quadrophenia.
The film makes its UK Blu-ray debut on 14th November, the same day the seminal ‘modpera’ is reissued in a Super Deluxe Edition CD package by Universal Music. I spoke with Roddam about the enduring affection for Quadrophenia and the experience of adapting the work described by Pete Townshend as ‘the Who album I am most proud of’.

It’s 35 years since Jaws hit multiplexes, become an instant classic, made bucket loads of money, turned its director into a star and made bathers think twice before going into the water. Since then we have had some toothless sequels, countless rip offs, lots of movie referencing (Airplane and Back to the Future Part II being the best) and a shark mythology that refuses to die. But what were the essential elements that made Jaws a phenomenon?
In the fourth of our giant sized movie celebration articles (various Owf writers have previously argued for Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Back to the Future and Psycho) and in no particular order here are 50 reasons why Jaws may in fact be the greatest film of all time…
1. The Invisible Shark
Whether it was mechanical shark difficulties or a wise directors’ decision (or probably a bit of both), there’s no denying that less is considerably more with old rubber teeth.

I have been a stranger in a strange land. The life of Moses is indeed epic and we may be getting not one, but two updates from different studios, reports Vulture. The Departed and Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin is developing an “exodus project” dealing with a “version of the story of the Israelites’ departure from Egypt.” Exam and upcoming Paradise Lost writer Stuart Hazeldine has hand a crack at the script, as well as The Green Lantern and The Flash‘s Michael Green. At Warners, they expect a “final draft imminently.”
Over at the other side of the Red Sea, Rise of the Apes producer Peter Chernin is developing a “Untitled Moses Project” at Fox. The attached writing team Bill Collage and Adam Cooper is an odd choice, as they’ve previously done Accepted and the Olsen twins’ New York Minute. Vulture points out they are going on to bigger and better things though,...

Vulture is reporting that there are two epic films featuring Moses are currently in development by two sets of heavyweight producers.
Dan Lin and Matti Leshem are developing Moses for Warner Bros., which will be a large scale retelling of the story of the Israelites’ departure from Egypt. Lin was reponsible for developing the 2006 Best Picture, The Departed. British screenwriter Stuart Hazeldine and American TV writer turned screenwriter Michael Green are writing the project.
Hazeldine recently was co-writer of The Tripods, an adaptation of the sci-fi classic with Alex Proyas. In addition, he is also working on an adaptation of John Milton’s Paradise Lost for Legendary Pictures. Green is best known for co-executive producing NBC’s Heroes and for creating the short-lived Kings. As of late he has become the go-to writer for "Spandex Stories" at Warner Bros. This was probably my favorite episode of the season so far. We got a lot of great stuff from all of the characters, minus Damon and Darby.
Let's start with Ray. He gets hit with this bomb that Francis, the great Moby Dick, doesn't want to meet Richard. Instead she wants to pay $1,500 for a weekend with Mike Hunt (sorry, I have to write his full name at all times from now on). Ray argues with Tanya about the situation, claiming that Mike Hunt isn't going to want to be in the business.
He and Francis hit it off, and maybe they should give the money back and see if the two of them can make it on their own. Now was Ray really looking out for his friend, who finally has a spring in his step? Or was Tanya correct in thinking Ray was just upset that Mike Hunt...

The episode "Sing It Again Ray," took a bit of a break in the fight for pimp supremacy and instead was more heavily focused on Damon (or the relationship between Damon and Ray).
The installment opened with the high school outcast acting out a pitch and a hit on his dad's baseball field, and then peeing on home plate. Like Tanya, I really saw this as a metaphorical piece. Damon was taking his anger out on his father by peeing on his precious home plate.
Although Tanya saw it the same way I did, and compared it to a wonderful piece of art, Damon said he just drank a lot of pop.
Was he being truthful in his explanation of the incident? Or was it just another example of Damon not being able to communicate with his father? It has to be a little of both right? The kid doesn't like baseball,...

Ah, Sherlock Holmes, what hast thou wrought? Taking literary and histocial figures and making them kick ass is the newest thing, with Francis Lawrence's Marco Polo, Paul Ws Anderson's Three Musketeers, Guy Ritchie's King Arthur, Moby Dick, Captain Nemo, and Moses all in various stages of prep. And who's this bearded figure clambering onto the bandwagon? Why, it's Leonardo da Vinci! Yup, THR's Heatvision blog is reporting that Warners have scored a treatment from Adrian Askarieh (producer of Hitman and the upcoming Kane and Lynch and Jonny Quest) with the Indiana Jones-ish title Leonardo da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever. The plot sets up the 15th century polymath as "a member of a secret society who falls headlong into a supernatural adventure that pits him against Biblical demons in a story involving secret codes, lost civilizations, hidden fortresses and fallen angels."THR suggest National Treasure, and Clash of the Titans as touchstones,...

Alice In Wonderland director Tim Burton (pictured) is to collaborate with Wanted helmer Timur Bekmambetov on a film version of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
The two filmmakers bought the rights to the book and will jointly produce the project, having previously paired on animated feature 9. Grahame-Smith will also pen the screenplay, reports Variety.
The book portrays the 16th president of the USA as an axe-throwing, highly-trained vampire assassin.
Also revising the history books is I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence who is to bring 13th century explorer Marco Polo to the big screen for Warner Bros.
Adam Cooper and Bill Collage are writing the screenplay for what is described as a fantasy adventure rather than a factual account, says Variety.

Lawrence would be directing a script penned by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (Accepted). After the success of Sherlock Holmes, it seems that no historical figure - ficitional or not - is safe from the clutches of Warner Bros. And the latest character to get the big screen is none other than that 13th century explorer and hiding game expert, Marco Polo.
Word reaches us via Variety that I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has been hired to helm a film based on a script pitch by writers Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (the writers of upcoming Moby Dick and Moses movies for Universal and Fox respectively). The story will take the real-life adventures of the famed Venetian merchant and his travels across Asia in the time of Kublai Khan and fashion them into a fantasy adventure.
"We see this as something that takes place in the Orient of our imagination amid the cultural clash of the East and the West," Cooper told Variety.

I'd originally planned to put together a list of the ten worst films of the decade, before realizing that it was an all but futile endeavor. There are 200 films, easily, that might qualify for the top ten, and there was no way to really put together a list collaboratively, either. We've all seen terrible movies, but usually, only the reviewing critic has seen them, so we could hardly get together and debate the merits of Larry the Cable Guy (for the record, I'd have probably named Captivityas the worst of the decade, on account of the fact that it made me angrier than a Bruce Banner backseat hate fuck).
Instead, I thought it'd be more valuable to look at the decade's most culturally poisonous movies -- those films that shifted the Hollywood landscape for the worst, that established negative trends, or that made people that I don't like happy. Not...

One of the most exciting things about the idea of a three-day Phish festival this fall is the fact that one of the dates of that weekend is Halloween. All Hallow’s Eve is a special date for Phish and their fans, as the band traditionally covers a full classic album — which they call a “musical costume” — in concert on that night. In 1994, Phish began the tradition of playing three-set shows on Halloween night, with the second set devoted entirely to a classic album. The first attempt was the Beatles‘ “White Album,” which won a fan voting poll. Subsequent years saw the band tackle the Who’s Quadrophenia, Talking Heads‘ Remain in Light and the Velvet Underground’s Loaded.
Phish are not the sort of band to buck tradition, so it should be assumed that they’ll be playing through a classic this Halloween. But what record should they tackle?...

New York -- Four film veterans are combining forces to form production banner Wildfire Films.
Writers Anton Diether ("Moby Dick") and Mark Hacker, producer-director Leon Rodriguez ("Double Tap") and production designer Jesus Carrera are forming the Austin- and Los Angeles-based banner to develop and produce film, TV and digital-media projects.
The company has a partnership with producer Fred Roos and will co-produce and develop "16 Minutes" for Overture as well as an urban-flavored "Les Miserables" with Eriq La Salle's Humble Journey Films.
It expects to shoot at least some projects in Texas and capitalize on the state's tax incentives.

The USA Network limited series The 4400 shattered the record for basic cable's most-watched series premiere Sunday. A staggering 7.4 million total viewers tuned in to the two-hour bow at 9 p.m., easily outdistancing previous record holder The Dead Zone by 1 million. Its 18-49 haul beat the network's Sunday primetime average in that demographic by 130%. The 4400 was the highest-rated program on USA since the 1998 miniseries Moby Dick, which averaged 10.4 million over two nights. With 4400 and Dead, USA now holds four of the five highest-rated series premieres in basic-cable history, including Peacemakers (5.2 million) and Monk (4.8 million).
