Rungano Nyoni made her name in 2017 with her Directors’ Fortnight entry I am Not a Witch, a surreal comedy of sorts in which a young Zambian girl named Shula is forced to choose between being turned into a goat or confessing that she is a witch. Opting for the latter, Shula is sent to a witch camp and put to work in the service of the community, the source of some uncomfortable satire, creating a space for Nyoni to explore the points of conflict between superstition and civilization in modern African society.
On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, by its total alone, suggests something similar, but although the protagonist is also called Shula, Nyoni’s sophomore film is something darker and altogether more serious. This time, the focus is the rub between tradition and modernity, using the occasion of a family funeral as the jumping-off point for a slow-burn drama builds,...

A few months ago, I wrote an article listing ten movies that – despite being well known – were difficult to find (legally) on any streaming service or even on disc. Those titles ranged from Ron Howard’s Cocoon to movies like Dawn of the Dead (the original). In the comments, many of our readers chimed in with their two cents on films they’ve found difficult to find over the years, so here are a few more challenging-to-find flicks, some of which may surprise you.
Panic Room:
The fact that David Fincher’s Panic Room has never been issued on Blu-ray blows me away. It’s been announced a few times, but a physical release never seems to happen (although you can stream it in HD pretty easily). What gives? You’d think the fact that it has Fincher’s name on it, and stars Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker,...

Marvel Rivals is an upcoming title being developed by NetEase; it is similar to Blizzard’s Overwatch in terms of gameplay and will feature various characters from Marvel Comics. The title also recently received its announcement trailer, and leaks have surfaced. The news comes after Marvel 1943 was announced during the State of Unreal 2024.
Per the announcement trailer, the game will be played from a third-person perspective. It will be a multiplayer team based Pvp shooter.
Not many different Marvel titles have come out recently, barring Marvel’s Spider-Man series and some other titles like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and none of them have been team-based Pvp shooters. Due to this, fans are incredibly hyped for the title and are expressing their excitement.

Johnny Depp has had an illustrious career over the years with many successful films and iconic roles. His collaboration with Tim Burton has churned out some of his most well-known works, including Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Matt Damon Once Used Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez’s Affair To Explain His Point On High-Profile Relationships (Picture Credit: Facebook & Instagram)
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are among the biggest Hollywood stars and are an apt example of true love. The couple parted ways years ago after getting engaged, but they found their way back to each other and finally got married a few years ago. Their personal life have always been under the media’s radar, and that was evidently noticed by everyone, including Ben’s close friend Matt Damon. The Oppenheimer actor once reflected on their high-profile relationship and expressed concern.
The pair met in 2001 on the sets of their film Gigli and soon started dating each other. Since then, the tabloids have been obsessed with them. They reportedly even had to postpone their wedding the first time because of too much media attention. Keep scrolling for more.

While those who constantly champion the value of physical media can sometimes come across as old-timers flailing their arms against the inevitable, there is a tragic truth at the heart of their arguments that keeps their feet planted in their ways. While the average person may have access to more media than at any other point in human history, countless titles remain unavailable to stream, rent, or buy via modern digital platforms

Months ago, we here at JoBlo started writing about an issue near and dear to the hearts of film fanatics everywhere – the resurgence of physical media. After being shocked by how difficult it was to find the Ron Howard movie Cocoon, I decided to make a list of 10 movies that were difficult to find, but the comments on the article clued me into the fact that the issue of out-of-print classics is far more widespread than I assumed. Last week, I did an article about how movies like The Cannonball Run and Dogma are missing, and in that vein, here are five more cult classics that are surprisingly tough to find.
Ricochet:
This 1992 action film was an early attempt to turn Denzel Washington into an action star. Despite stylish direction by Russell Mulcahy and an unforgettable turn by John Lithgow as the movie’s villain, it was only a modest success.

There was a time when Kevin Smith was regarded as being one of the definitive filmmakers of Generation X. His feature directing debut on the shoestring-budgeted 1994 indie hit "Clerks" suggested Smith not only had a firm understanding of the slacker mentality that afflicted so many people in his age bracket, but he was also shrewd enough to be critical of it. The film centers on disgruntled Quick Stop Groceries clerk Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) and those in his immediate vicinity, including his equally-cynical, unmotivated best friend Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) and the off-beat drug dealers that loiter outside the store: loud-mouthed horny miscreant Jay (Jason Mewes) and his reserved yet secretly wise companion Silent Bob (Smith). As colorful as these characters were, they also felt like real people you could imagine Smith knew growing up on his home turf of New Jersey.

This past week saw the release of The Book of Clarence, a movie about a down-on-his-luck guy who hits upon a get-rich-quick scheme that leads him into a heap of trouble. It’s a classic topic for a movie, but it is treading on more controversial ground than usual. Because in the case of this story about a hustler getting in over his head, the hustle happens to be set around Israel and Palestine during the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth. In fact, that is Clarence’s whole scheme: He sees Jesus and decides to get into the messiah business.
This is not the first film to portray the story of one of Jesus’ fictional contemporaries. Monty Python’s Life of Brian attracted protests, controversy, and endless talk show guest slots over its portrayal of a man who was definitely not the messiah, just a very naughty boy.

The fraudulent Michelangelo who performed at Mar-a-Lago isn't the only imposter version of an iconic animated anthropomorphic animal on the loose at the dawn of 2024.
As of January 1 this year, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks's "Steamboat Willie" -- the benchmark 1928 black-and-white cartoon short featuring Mickey Mouse in his earliest form -- has officially entered the public domain. That means it's open season for anyone and everyone who wants to use that iteration of the Walt Disney Company's mascot. So, naturally, there's already an influx of horror-themed films and even video games aiming to parody the rodent's family-friendly image. (Nobody tell them that Kevin Smith basically already did that 25 years ago with the Mickey-inspired Mooby the Golden Calf in "Dogma.")

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Prophecy was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When it comes to religious-themed horror, there are a few films out there worth watching and when it comes to the early to mid-1990s, a few films really stand out in the dark, moody horror realm. These genres overlap quite a bit, and one stellar example of dark, moody, religious horror is the 1995 film The Prophecy (watch it Here), starring Christopher Walken as the archangel Gabriel, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, Viggo Mortensen, Eric Stoltz, and Amanda Plummer. The film had a stacked cast for 1995 and it seemed to do decently in horror circles but not so much outside of that. So, what happened to The Prophecy?
What is The Prophecy about?...

Bill Maher has faced a lot of criticism after revealing that he was bringing Real Time back to HBO next week.
Called out by a slew of striking writers on social media, the WGA called the move “disappointing” and said that they would picket the show on its return.
But the other question that Maher’s move provoked was whether the remaining late-night hosts – The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Late Night’s Seth Meyers and Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver – would make a similar move.
As it stands, the answer seems to be a hearty ‘No’.

Exclusive: Kevin Smith’s next stop in his Askewniverse will be a re-team with Dark Horse Comics on comic book series sequel Quick Stops II.
The black-and-white four-issue anthology series will explore the origin story of character Nancy Goldruff — first mentioned in Smith’s 1999 movie Dogma as creator of a kids’ film and TV series called Mooby — and the bovine franchise she spawned.
Smith told us: “In Quick Stops I, we visited four small stories in the Askewniverse. So for Quick Stops II, we did four issues of a massive story that spans a few decades to tell the tale of Mooby, the Golden Calf. And where that salacious story takes us is gritty, graphic and grotesquely grown up. I cannot wait to introduce you to Nancy Goldruff – who warranted merely a mention in 1999’s Dogma, but gets a full-fledged secret origin story in Quick Stops II!”

It’s rare that European cinema impacts on Hollywood but it’s exciting when there’s a trickle-down effect, like the connection to be made between Denmark’s stripped-down Dogme movies, which launched in Cannes in the late ’90s, and Steven Spielberg’s decision to go back to basics with Catch Me If You Can a few years later. It’s a moot point how many will ever see Romanian director Radu Jude’s follow-up to his 2021 Berlinale winner Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, but, like Bob Dylan going electric or the Sex Pistols making their ramshackle debut at a London art school, this wilfully uncommercial but bloody-minded film could be genuinely seminal in its anarchic and totally individualistic approach, slipping discordant, Godardian subversion into a darkly comic, Ruben Östlund-style human drama.

Like Kevin Smith’s Dogma, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction was a big-name movie made for a very small price. The film, which took in more than $100 million at the U.S. box office (and more than $200 million globally), was made for less than $9 million, even though it featured A-list stars like Samuel L. Joaquin Phoenix is Napoleon Bonaparte. We admit it’s a bit of a strange idea given the absolute lack of je ne sais quoi energy (or French accent) that comes to mind when you think of the American actor. Nevertheless, in the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon biopic, there is something undeniably intriguing about the performance, not least of which because this is a chance to see Phoenix work with Scott again in a sprawling historical context.
Indeed, the first and last time the pair collaborated was Gladiator, the film that won Scott a Best Picture Oscar and garnered Phoenix a supporting actor nomination. In that film, Phoenix played another tyrant, too, albeit a less ambiguous one (there are no grand monuments to Commodus in Rome like there is for Napoleon in Paris!). Dogma is the kind of movie that has to be seen to be believed. But, then again, it’s a movie about belief. Well, kind of. Writer/director Kevin Smith made a movie that poked considerable fun at religion, and the Catholic Church in particular, while simultaneously showing a broad knowledge of religious dogma. Of course, the film drew quite a bit of controversy at the time, even causing its release date to be pushed back by a year, from 1998 to 1999. But, when released, it also became a moderate hit, thanks to an all-star cast that included Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, Linda Fiorentino, and Janeane Garofalo. Yet, even with all of those big names, Smith managed to make the movie for just $10 million, and he told us how he was able to do that. (Click on the media bar below to hear Kevin Smith) https://www.

Joan is Awful is the first episode of the sixth season of Black Mirror. It is written by Charlie Brooker, directed by Ally Pankiw and stars Salma Hayek, Annie Murphy, and Michael Cera.
This episode is more amusing than terrifying and features Salma Hayek (who mocks her own diction) playing an actress in a series that parodies itself. It is a charming and humorous episode that serves as an excellent appetizer for this sixth season.
Did you expect Charlie Brooker not to take AI beyond imagination? Wait until the end of the episode, where his idea of personalized content for Netflix is quite curious and, although comedic, also frightening.

With the unfortunate history of portrayals of many marginalized communities, the first films to kick open the door to mainstream representation were often made outside of a community, resulting in work that is deemed problematic in today’s environment. Chasing Amy being one such example: though the third film from Kevin Smith met some controversy, it did not have picket lines that his fourth, Dogma, would invite.
For Sav Rodgers, a kid growing up in Kanas who adored Ben Affleck, Chasing Amy became a gateway into understanding themselves and, ultimately, who they wanted to become. In his highly personal feature film debut, the trans filmmaker expands upon his viral Ted talk, unpacking multiple problems with Chasing Amy and the ’90s independent film scene. In his highly personal feature film debut, the trans filmmaker expands upon his viral Ted talk, unpacking multiple problems with Chasing Amy and the ’90s independent film scene. The Idiots is something like a holy grail among Lars von Trier’s corpus, long out-of-print and legendary (even among his provocations) for its comic treatment of social disruption. It’s also the only feature von Trier made per Dogme 95 rules (you probably know at least a handful off the top of your head but just in case) and thus the one most aided by a 4K restoration––coming this month courtesy Mubi, who are doing the Lord’s (or Devil’s) work with a major rollout of his work.
Ahead of a June 16 debut at Metrograph and Mubi stream on July 7, a new preview shows off the Dogme judder and grain with effervescence, the enterprise boosted by emphatic quotes from Joachim Trier and Sean Baker. Suddenly the years spent waiting to fill this blind spot seem justified.

Mubi has released a new trailer for the 25th anniversary 4K restoration of Lars von Trier‘s dark comedy The Idiots. The only film that von Trier made under the Dogme 95 “Vow of Chastity”, The Idiots centers on a commune in the Danish suburbs where members aim to disrupt wider “bourgeoisie” society by pretending to have mental and physical ailments in public. It is the second film in von Trier’s Golden Heart Trilogy, preceded by Breaking the Waves and followed by Dancer in the Dark. The Idiots will open theatrically at […]

Ben Affleck’s “Air,” arguably the first real awards contender of 2023, will debut on Prime Video starting May 12, Amazon announced Tuesday.
The film, which was released on April 5 in theaters around the world, has grossed more than $79 million worldwide.
“Air” has been embraced by critics and audiences, Amazon was more than happy to note in its press release about the Prime Video debut, with Affleck’s feature generating a 92 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, a 98 percent audience score, and an A-grade from CinemaScore. Here’s some boilerplate language about the project:
From award-winning director Ben Affleck, Air reveals the unbelievable game-changing partnership between a then-rookie Michael Jordan and Nike’s fledgling basketball division, which revolutionized the world of sports and contemporary culture with the Air Jordan brand. This moving story follows the career-defining gamble of an unconventional team with everything on the line, the uncompromising vision of...

Kevin Smith says he spent a month in a mental health treatment facility last January after having a “complete break from reality” and reveals how therapy helped him understand that childhood interactions he experienced were a form of sexual abuse.
In a new interview with People magazine, the Clerks and Chasing Amy director details his mental health journey over the past several months, which kicked off with waking one night in terror, before he was admitted to Arizona’s Sierra Tucson treatment center. “For the last month, I have been at a mental health facility,” he shared in a 30-minute video. “I had a complete break with reality and became very dissociated.”
Smith said that the experience was “scary,” resulting in him grappling with suicidal thoughts. “At that moment, I wouldn’t have been averse to not being around any longer. I called a friend and said, ‘I’m in a weird,...

Everyone is a “Prisoner” in a new Dr Drama series created by Kim Fupz Aakeson, just shown at Canneseries. Not just the inmates crammed inside an old Danish prison, but the people who guard them as well.
“Twenty years ago, I wrote a Dogme film [‘In Your Hands’] that also took place in prison. I became interested in these guards, because who takes on that job? Who walks into such a hostile environment every day, unarmed?!,” he wonders.
The characters – played by “The Killing” star Sofie Gråbøl, David Dencik, Charlotte Fich and Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt as Sammi, an ambitious rookie – have to watch their backs. But frustrated criminals are not their biggest problem: it’s the system itself, which leaves them powerless.
“It’s an extremely hard profession, poorly paid. They are constantly understaffed,” observes Gråbøl. Taking on Miriam, who still believes in people even though she can’t trust her own son.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have shared the screen and bank accounts, but one thing they didn’t agree on was Damon’s lifestyle when they were roommates.
Ben Affleck appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden as part of the show’s final group of guests, promoting his latest directorial effort, Air, which co-stars both himself and Matt Damon. On their early days as roommates, Affleck said of Damon, “Matt is a beautiful guy, I love him. He’s my best friend, he’s been great to me my whole life, he’s a brilliant guy…I would not suggest living with him.” How do you like them apples, Matt?
Affleck recalled devising a plan with his brother Casey, a fellow roommate, that they hoped would expose Damon as a slob. “We’re just going to wait and see how long he will go before he actually gets up and goes,...

Ben Affleck is mistakenly identified as his longtime collaborator Matt Damon in the new Dunkin’ commercial.
In a follow-up to his previous advertisement for the American coffee chain, which aired during the 2023 Super Bowl, Affleck returned to promote the company’s newest campaign.
“I’m here for the Dunkin’ Run campaign commercial,” the Gone Girl actor informs two employees at the register.
He continues to explicate his idea of doing an “authentic” and “meta” advertisement: “Yes, I’m doing a commercial, but am I doing the commercial? You know, I don’t do commercials. I’m a real actor, this is an art form for me.”
The two Dunkin’ employees then converse with each other before asking Affleck if he was in Martin Scorsese’s 2006 thriller The Departed.
“I’m not Matt Damon,” Affleck responds as one excitedly answers: “Oh yeah, I love him! I love him. The guy’s got a really consistent career,...

On Monday, Oscar-winning documentarian Asif Kapadia told a roomful of Cph:dox Conference attendees that he might have never directed a nonfiction film had it not been for Harvey Weinstein “killing” his first narrative feature film, “The Warrior.”
“The Warrior,” starring the late Irrfan Khan, is about a mercenary directed by an evil warlord to wreak havoc on a rural village in Rajasthan by forcing the poor inhabitants to pay taxes. In 2003, the film won two BAFTAs for outstanding debut and outstanding British Film. But according to Kapadia, the film garnered no attention outside of England due to Weinstein, who bought worldwide rights – excluding the U.K. – in 2001.
“I was flown out to New York to meet Weinstein, and everyone was saying how great it was that the film had sold to Miramax,” Kapadia said. “I remember saying why I did not feel good about (the deal).”

Many beautiful Hollywood actors have conquered multiple genres, but Salma Hayek Pinault is one of the most alluring and versatile. For decades, Pinault has exemplified glamour and beauty, with roles that show her talent for creating unique characters. For Pinault, who is known for her confidence, there are times when she hesitates to truly step into that “sexy” mentality. She explained more in a recent conversation with Glamour magazine, where she discussed the sheer dress that she wore to the premiere of Magic Mike’s Last Dance.

One of director Kevin Smith’s most beloved – but also controversial – movies, Dogma, has seemingly vanished. The film, which remains his highest-grossing domestic release (by just a few hundred thousand dollars), was a considerable DVD hit back in the day, noted for its wildly un-pc commentary track where, amongst other things, Kevin Smith took aim at the film’s leading lady, Linda Fiorentino. It got a Blu-ray release, which is now out of print, but ever since then the film has been Mia, with it long unavailable on streaming, while old copies of the film cost a pretty penny if you can find them used. Wtf Happened?
In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Movie, we dig into all things Dogma. We explain how the film was a religious hot potato that the Disney-owned Miramax films refused to release theatrically, leading to the Weinstein Brothers, Harvey and Bob, buying back the rights themselves,...

Salma Hayek Pinault Was Told She Was Too 'Sexy' For Comedy Until Adam Sandler's Grown Ups Came Along
As a producer, Adam Sandler has always managed to attract an impressive litany of talent. Although the films released through Sandler's studio, Happy Madison, regularly get terrible reviews, they tend to be very lucrative and high-profile actors keep coming back for more work. This may be because, as the rumor mill has it, Sandler is a relentlessly decent and kind human being that others love to work with. As such, Al Pacino can be seen in "Jack and Jill," Susan Sarandon appeared in "That's My Boy," and the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Aniston, and Winona Ryder have all played Sandler's wife or love interest in his movies.

Salma Hayek has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful actors in Hollywood. The star rose to fame in Tinsel Town after starring in 1996's "From Dusk Till Dawn," and has continued to expand her résumé, appearing in films like "Wild Wild West," "Dogma," and "Frida," the latter of which garnered critical acclaim. Most recently, Hayek is the voice of Kitty Softpaws in "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" and stars alongside Channing Tatum as Maxandra Mendoza in "Magic Mike's Last Dance," set to release on Feb. 10.

Some great news for exhibition Monday morning: Amazon Studios is getting back into the wide theatrical-release business with Ben Affleck’s Nike movie Air, starring his fellow Good Will Hunting co-Oscar winner Matt Damon.
Air will get a global theatrical release on Wednesday, April 5, heading into the lucrative Easter weekend. This is the first wide theatrical release from Amazon since its Sundance acquisition, Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, which had a wide summer release in 2019.
I hear Air will have a longer theatrical window than Amazon Studios’ recent limited theatrical releases, before hitting Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. It truly is a first-of-its-kind arrangement for the studio as Amazon will distribute the film globally, with Warner Bros.
Pictures handling international as part of its distribution pact with Amazon’s MGM. Amazon Studios only had U.S. on Late Night, not global rights.

Well Schmoes, as 2022 finally draws to a close we reflect on a year unlike any other in our lifetimes. We finally got back to a pretty normal theatrical schedule from the studios, but streaming still had a lot t offer as well. If there is one thing for sure, there are always movies that are highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike. As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt that the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you and some may just piss you off, but these are my honest-to-goodness perspective of the movies of 2022. If you disagree with any of the choices, please voice your own opinion in the comments below. After all, the only opinion that really matters is yours, and I am just here to share mine.

It's never a bad time to remember the late, great Alan Rickman. After all, films like "Dogma," "Galaxy Quest," and "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" are excellent movie night picks all year round. However, it's especially hard not to think about the actor around the holiday season as he stars in two fan-favorite Christmas staples: "Die Hard" and "Love Actually." With the latter celebrating a milestone anniversary this year, it's the perfect time to revisit Richard Curtis' beloved British ensemble picture that reminds us that love is all around us.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of the classic holiday rom-com, ABC News put together a special titled "The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later." Diane Sawyer sits down with members of the cast and crew to reminisce, revealing some untold stories from the film. And when it comes to discussing Rickman's role in the story, the writer...

A major American filmmaker’s take on one of the most “unadaptable” novels this side of the second World War has, no surprise, inspired debate. But wherever one lands on White Noise tends to make room for praising Lol Crawley, a cinematographer who’d previously shaped films by Brady Corbet and Andrew Haigh, and modern television vis-à-vis The Oa and Black Mirror.
Not an expected choice for Baumbach, but White Noise‘s meeting of domestic dread and sci-fi terror balances the equation. Captured on anamorphic 35mm (with some VistaVision handled by the second unit) and showing 150 million of production design, its 2.39 images looked great at EnergaCAMERIMAGE, the sight of our interview—better than it might at home, a dilemma that comprised the core of our conversation.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Blur's No Distance Left to Run, directed by Thomas Vinterberg. Thomas Vinterberg is no stranger to both the formalistic and vulnerable. When this works well, like when he stormed onto the scene with The Celebration (Festen), his films have a tremendous impact. The Celebration is a gut punch of a film, about a family divided after a son delivers a rousing speech at a party that leaves all the skeletons in the family's closet open for all to see. The formalistic nature of the film, itself the first Dogme-film, where it was all shot with natural lighting on hand-held cameras (and 8 other...
