Oh, Canada debuting this week on the Croisette is high time to see lesser-seen Schrader on the Criterion Channel, who’ll debut an 11-title series including the likes of Touch, The Canyons, and Patty Hearst, while Old Boyfriends (written with his brother Leonard) and his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” are also programmed. Five films by Jean Grémillon, a rather underappreciated figure of French cinema, will be showing
Series-wise, there’s an appreciation of the synth soundtrack stretching all the way back to 1956’s Forbidden Planet while, naturally, finding its glut of titles in the ’70s and ’80s––Argento and Carpenter, obviously, but also Tarkovsky and Peter Weir. A Prince and restorations of films by Bob Odenkirk, Obayashi, John Greyson, and Jacques Rivette (whose Duelle is a masterpiece of the highest order) make streaming debuts. I Am Cuba, Girlfight, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Dazed and Confused are June’s Criterion Editions.

Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let’s take a look back at all 11 of Anderson’s films, ranked worst to best.
Anderson made his directorial debut with “Bottle Rocket” (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) — well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “Birdman.” He...

Since his first film, Writer/Director Wes Anderson has become known for his highly visual combination of bright colors with an older aesthetic. His costuming and set design have a very specific signature that makes it easy to identify when watching a Wes Anderson movie. With him currently working on a new film, The Phoenician Scheme, which reunites him with his muse Bill Murray, we take a look back at all his feature-length films and try to figure out where they rank. Briston Maroney made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week to perform the song “Body” from his latest album, Ultrapure.
Taking the stage alongside his band, Maroney delivered an impassioned rendition of the song, singing the chorus’ refrain “Someday, my body will be just a body” in all of its anthemic glory. For the climax, he stepped back to let his guitar do the talking, laying down a chaotic slide guitar solo over the band’s energetic groove. Watch a video of the performance below.
Ultrapure arrived this past September and is the second full-length release from Maroney. His debut album, Sunflower, premiered in 2021, featuring the Manchester Orchestra co-penned song, “Bottle Rocket.” In 2022, he shared the singles “Paradise” and “Harvard,” and last year, he opened for Noah Kahan.
Up next, Maroney has tour dates of his own coming up, including stops in cities like San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver, and more.

Owen Wilson is set to star in a comedy series at Apple TV+ set in the world of professional golf, Variety has learned.
The untitled series hails from writer Jason Keller. Apple has given the series a 10-episode order. Per the official description, Wilson will star as Pryce Cahill, “an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom.”
Both Keller and Wilson also serve as executive producers on the series. Propagate Content’s Ben Silverman will also executive produce along with Howard T. Owens and Rodney Ferrell, Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady, Piece of Work’s Lee Eisenberg and Natalie Sandy, and Chris Moynihan. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris will direct.
This is the latest TV role for Wilson of late.

After eight nominations for six different films he has made, director Wes Anderson has finally won his first Oscar.
Receiving the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems unconventional for both the category, which normally awards emerging filmmakers, and Anderson himself, who was best known till this point for directing features such as “Asteroid City” (which happened to also be in awards contention this season.)
His win was over fellow nominees “The After,” from director Misan Harriman, “Invincible,” from director Vincent René-Lortie, “Knight of Fortune,” from director Lasse Lyskjær Noer, and “Red, White and Blue” from director Nazrin Choudhury.
Anderson’s Oscar achievement comes as a bit of a full circle moment for the auteur, coming just over two decades since his career as a professional filmmaker kicked off with the premiere of his short “Bottle Rocket...

Wes Anderson is driving through the Spanish countryside with his eight-year-old daughter, Freya; it’s her school holiday. At the end of our half-hour phone conversation, he reaches Barcelona. He has always loved making shorts, clocking a dozen since his career launched with 1993 Sundance entry “Bottle Rocket,” the short that inspired his eventual debut feature of the same name, when we first met. Now, he has an Oscar frontrunner, Venice premiere “The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar,” the first and longest (39 minutes) of four increasingly strange Roald Dahl shorts currently on Netflix. “Henry Sugar” is notably the highest-rated live-action short of 2023 on Letterboxd.
Netflix, which owns the screen rights to the Dahl library, provided the budget for “Henry Sugar,” and when Anderson delivered the first film economically, he had some money left over and asked for a budget to complete three more shorts. Is he done? “It’s completely up to them,...

There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

While the Paris, France-based filmmaker was unable to make it all the way to Park City, Utah, in person, Wes Anderson did leave the 2024 Sundance Film Festival with some surprises on its final weekend that IndieWire can announce exclusively.

Taking place at Holiday Village Cinemas on Saturday, January 27 at 8:30 p.m. Mt, the screening will mark Anderson’s return to the festival 31 years after “Bottle Rocket” premiered at Sundance in 1993.

Test screenings are always stressful, but especially so when it’s your first film. And while most of us all love the entire oeuvre of Wes Anderson, his debut, 1996’s Bottle Rocket, was far from being perceived as the classic it is today. As Kumar would say, Wes Anderson blew it, man.
Speaking at the Lumière Film Festival, Wes Anderson recalled the confidence that came along with being green in the movie industry – although it may have played a role in the initial public reaction of Bottle Rocket. “I had an idea of what I wanted to do, and no one could convince me that we shouldn’t do it, my confidence was the highest, then. When we finally made it and showed it to an audience, they hated it. I was so shocked, it was a disaster.”
Still, that fateful Bottle Rocket screening proved to be a pivotal moment for Wes Anderson.

Wes Anderson is admitting that his directorial debut flop “Bottle Rocket” forever “changed” him.
The Oscar-nominated auteur, who recently helmed short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” told audiences at the Lumière Film Festival (via Variety) that his 1996 debut was a “disaster” that he probably would not have made had he known just how much audiences would have despised it at the time. More than 25 years since its release, the Sony film has garnered a cult following.

Lyon’s impressive Roman-style auditorium, normally used by the city’s symphonic orchestra, was sold out as U.S. writer and director Wes Anderson took to the stage as guest of honor of the Lumière Film Festival.

Back in 1992 Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson — who had met the University of Texas in Dallas and were roomies — decided to make a movie. But after spending $10,000 and shooting 13 minutes of the crime caper comedy “Bottle Rocket,” they ran out of money. Eventually, the short and the full script made its way to Oscar-winning writer/director/producer James L. Brooks. It just so happened that Columbia had a deal with Brooks to finance a low-budget film selected by the filmmaker. And in 1996, the feature-length version of “Bottle Rocket” was released with Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson and James Caan. Though the film didn’t set the box office on fire, critics realized Anderson was a new and exciting cinematic voice.

While it’s too easy to consider filmmaker Wes Anderson’s cinematic world one entirely of his own creation, the iconoclastic creator’s impeccably built tales have always hinged on his long-running professional bonds with everyone from his perpetual co-writer Roman Coppola to his merry band of performers.
And, of course, there’s been Roald Dahl.
While the iconic if controversial British author passed away before Anderson even shot his first feature, “Bottle Rocket,” the mannered and fantastical world the “James and the Giant Peach” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” author built on the page is a striking match for Anderson’s cinematic obsessions.
In 2009, Anderson tried his hand at his first Dahl adaptation with his winsome and charming stop-motion feature “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and now, nearly 15 years later, Anderson wades even deeper into the rich waters of Dahl’s bibliography with his latest work: a series of short...

Elliott Smith’s pre-solo band, Heatmiser, is back with another previously unreleased single from their forthcoming rarities compilation, The Music of Heatmiser (due on October 6th). Entitled “Bottle Rocket,” the song was recorded in 1992 and is a transportive artifact from the band’s early days. Stream it below.
Originally included on a demo cassette that the band was using to promote themselves during their 1992 tour, “Bottle Rocket” is not only a time-capsule of sorts, but also conveys Heatmiser’s lively energy and undeniable musical chemistry. Beginning with an appropriate amount of grungy, rock riffage, the song’s arrangement opens up to a melodic chorus with a descending chord progression and call-and-response vocals. Over top, lyrics from the band’s Neil Gust carry a feeling of yearning, albeit, a bit esoterically.
As Gust has explained recently, though, those esoteric lyrics had a very specific and personal meaning. Several years prior to writing “Bottle Rocket,...

Exclusive: Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman is set to make its world premiere Monday night at the Toronto Film Festival. Pine won’t be in attendance, choosing to stand in solidarity with his fellow actors amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. The film’s producer, Stacey Sher, says that not only is Pine proud to do so, she thinks the character at the center of his story would be on the same page.
“Chris comes from a family of actors who have struggled and he understands, especially given the time we are living in, Darren (the character Pine plays in Poolman) would of been out there on the picket lines making sure people were hydrated,” Sher says. “We all felt the film belonged at TIFF and so honored to be here because it is an audience festival. It is a place where things that are optimistic can connect with people as well.

Even though the movie hasn't been in the conversation in a meaningful way for weeks now, Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" has managed to cross a box office milestone. Thanks to the Labor Day weekend returns, the filmmaker's latest has finally crossed the $50 million mark globally. While it may not be a fortune by Hollywood standards, it's good enough to cement Anderson as a man carving a path for those who wish to see more original films produced in the current landscape. Quietly, this is something Anderson has done for a long time.
Per The Numbers, "Asteroid City" pulled in just shy of $43,000 over Labor Day weekend domestically, which was just enough to put it over the top. It now sits at $28.1 million domestically to go with $22.4 million internationally for a grand total of $50.5 million. Against a $25 million budget and seemingly modest marketing budget, that's a win for Focus Features.

Wes Anderson is the belle of the ball at the Venice International Film Festival this year, on-site to receive the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker prize but also to debut his Netflix short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” The Roald Dahl adaptation starring Ralph Fiennes, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Dev Patel premiered out of competition this week to a rapturous standing ovation and strong reviews.
The seven-time Oscar-nominated director/writer held court with a master class conversation on Saturday in the Palazzo del Casino, where he spoke to an eager young audience bursting with questions — many attendees were turned away, and the line to get into the press conference hall wove out the door, down three flights of stairs, and into the main entryway of the building.
As many in the audience were aspiring filmmakers themselves, Anderson naturally mused backward about his feature directorial debut, 1996’s “Bottle Rocket,” co-written by Owen Wilson.

Wes Anderson has revealed that his next feature film project will be simpler in terms of its production scale and with a more compact cast, after his ensemble works The French Dispatch and Asteroid City.
“I have a script that we wrote right before the strike… It’s simple with three characters and totally linear and it’s, I wouldn’t say traditional because it’s very weird, but it’s more straightforward,” he said.
The director teased the details in a packed masterclass at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, which he is attending this year with his medium-length Roald Dahl adaptation, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
Hundreds of mainly young fans queued around the block to get into event at which Anderson shared his many influences from directors like Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle to Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

Over the last nearly 25 years and counting, Wes Anderson and Robert Yeoman have been one of cinema’s most essential director-cinematographer pairings. The filmmaking duo has crafted a signature style that has made Anderson one of the most recognizable auteurs in film history. One look at the frame is all it takes to know you’re watching a Wes Anderson film, whether it’s the hyper-stylized set design, the meticulous symmetry of a composition, or the precision of lateral camera movements.
Anderson has always been a highly visual filmmaker, going back to his acclaimed debut “Bottle Rocket” and his breakout sophomore work “Rushmore.” But over the years, his work has only gotten more and more stylized and meticulous in his compositions; compare “The French Dispatch” to “Rushmore,” and the latter feels practically loose and rough in comparison. Get ready to delve into The Music of Heatmiser. The Portland band best known as Elliott Smith’s pre-solo career springboard has announced a new rarities compilation arriving October 6th via Third Man Records, and a demo version of the track “Lowlife” is out now.
Heatmiser initially distributed The Music of Heatmiser — then a 6-song cassette — at local record stores and shows to promote the band before they released their 1993 debut LP, Dead Air. According to co-founding singer-guitarist Neil Gust, this longer package — featuring 23 additional demos, live tracks, rare versions, and previously unreleased songs — came together thanks to drummer Tony Lash.
“Tony found a bunch of forgotten recordings and started mixing them and sending them to me,” Gust said in a statement. “We were struck by the freewheeling energy of the band; you could hear how much fun we were having. In 1992 we could barely afford the studio so it...

Wes Anderson has once again recruited Jason Schwartzman for another one of his films. Over the past two decades, the pair have worked together several times, including on "Rushmore," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," and "Moonrise Kingdom." Now, Schwartzman is the star of Anderson's latest theatrical release, "Asteroid City," which premiered on June 16. The period film, which takes place during the 1950s, follows a group of gifted students and their parents who visit a desert town for the annual Junior Stargazer convention. During their stay, they experience a mysterious cosmic event together.
Schwartzman plays a war photographer named Augie Steenbeck, whose son, Woodrow (Jake Ryan), is a Junior Stargazer winner. Also making up the cast are Scarlett Johansson as actor Midge Campbell; Tom Hanks as Augie's father-in-law, Stanley Zak; Jeffrey Wright as the convention's host, General Grif Gibson; and Tilda Swinton as scientist Dr. Hickenlooper.

I’ve always been shy when it comes to writing about Wes Anderson, because he’s a filmmaker I rarely connect with. When I watch one of his movies, I can’t help but see his talent, but I feel like I’m experiencing something that was made on a different planet from the one I live on. I have felt that way from his very first feature, “Bottle Rocket” (1996), and I really felt it at the Toronto Film Festival in 1998 when I saw “Rushmore” — because everyone there did a backflip of ecstasy, already hailing Anderson as the filmmaker of his generation, and I didn’t get it.
I mean, I kind of saw what people were talking about: that “Rushmore” was like “The Graduate” for the new millennium, that the Jason Schwartzman hero had a formidable Holden Caulfield-gone-meta deadpan attitude that was equal parts devious and desperate, that the...

Let’s get this out of the way right from the top: Wes Anderson has never made a bad movie, and — in all likelihood — he probably never will. He’s too particular, too immaculate, too in command of his craft. Of course, the fact that he has always been so sure of himself only makes it more tempting to chart the progress of his career and to measure his films against each other. Or maybe it’s just fun because there are still only 11 of them, and everyone seems to have their own favorite. Who could say?
Anderson is the rarest of rarities, an arthouse filmmaker who not only finds ways to consistently make ambitious original projects, but also maintains genuine influence on what remains of mainstream pop culture. (None of the other esteemed directors who competed for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival were...

As both his first western and first time with sci-fi, there’s never been an entry into either genre that looks quite like what Wes Anderson conjured with Asteroid City. With its dreamlike, milky textures captured under the blazing sun of Spain (standing in for a fictional desert town of 1950s Americana) and extraterrestrial sequences that have a uniquely otherworldly touch, I was eager to speak with cinematographer Robert Yeoman about his process. For having first collaborate with Anderson on his debut Bottle Rocket and subsequently worked on all of his live-action features since, he’s been with the director every step of his evolution, honing the craft with a beautifully persnickety preciseness simply otherwise absent in American filmmaking.

Wes Anderson said the real reason Bill Murray was forced to drop out of the filmmaker’s latest drama, “Asteroid City,” was due to Murray contracting Covid-19 and not because of on-set misconduct allegations against the actor that surfaced last year.
Asked by Indiewire about the allegations against Murray, Anderson said, “My experience with Bill is so extensive. Bill was such a great supporter of me from the very beginning. I don’t want to speak about somebody else’s experience, but he’s really part of my family. You know, he’s my daughter’s godfather. In fact, he actually baptized her. He’s the one who splashed the water.”
Prior to “Asteroid City,” Anderson worked with Murray on every film he’s directed since his debut feature, 1996’s “Bottle Rocket.” Murray was originally supposed to play a hotel manager in “Asteroid City,” a supporting player who mostly interacts...

Here’s one thing we learned at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday: If Wes Anderson really were to make a “Star Wars” movie, that film would look nothing at all like the viral video that purports to show what Anderson’s version of the Lucasfilm universe might be like.
The proof is in “Asteroid City,” Anderson’s new movie, which premiered in Cannes on Tuesday and does include an alien who comes to Earth in a spaceship. It takes place in a galaxy far, far away, to be sure, but that galaxy is on Earth. It’s only far, far away from any recognizable human behavior because it’s in Wes-world: a small town populated with nothing but eccentrics in interesting clothing with speech patterns that only marginally resemble actual human communication.

"We're gonna blow it up, sir, but we're gonna need the best dynamite man imaginable." So find that man and save Earth! Found in someone's dusty video collection comes this comedy bit that originally aired at the end of the 1990s. Wes Anderson's big breakout film was Rushmore, his second feature film after his indie debut Bottle Rocket. It opened in theaters in early 1999 after initially premiering at the 1998 Toronto Film Festival. The film was a massive indie hit at the time, earning over $17 million at the box office that year. In celebration of its success, the cast were recruited to make skits for the 1999 MTV Movie Awards to help promote the event. Someone found this old video and uploaded it on YouTube for all of us to enjoy. I didn't even know they made this! I'm sure most forgot. It features Jason Schwartzman reprising his role as Max Fischer...

Who doesn't love Owen Wilson? In the late '90s, the blond star burst on the scene in Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket," snuck into big productions like "The Haunting" and "Armageddon," and then hit the big time when he teamed with Jackie Chan for the blockbuster "Shanghai-Noon" and its sequel. Since then, Wilson has expanded his portfolio with instant classics like "Zoolander," "Wedding Crashers," and "Midnight in Paris," and continues to show off his knack for lighthearted comedy in films such as "The French Dispatch," and the Marvel Disney+ series, "Loki."
Wilson even has his own animated franchise, Disney/Pixar's "Cars," in which he plays Lightning McQueen, a role he's returned to various times, including the California Adventure theme park ride. There's nothing he can't do, and his careful project selection typically ensures quality despite a small handful of duds during his nearly three-decade stay on the Hollywood A-list.

Are you ready for deadpan line readings, symmetrical cinematography, yellow typography, and whimsy? Wes Anderson and a cast of a thousand stars are here for you.

After starring in “Paint” as a Bob Ross-esque (but far more angry and tortured) paint instructor, Owen Wilson admits he’s warmed to finding his own sense of zen calm — not with watercolors and brushes, but with Crayolas.
“When my boys were little, at restaurants I’d give them crayons and try to calm them down, but I think that maybe adults should be doing that, too,” Wilson told Variety at the premiere of the IFC film at the Ace Hotel on Thursday. ”I don’t know why we ever stop doing that, because there is something really nice about trying to create something.”
“I guess there’s that Picasso quote: ‘I want to spend the rest of my life learning to paint like a child,’” he mused. “Not worrying about anything and just expressing yourself — that feels good.”

In May, the Cannes Film Festival injects a jolt of international cinema into year ahead, and expectations are even greater than usual this time around. In 2022, Cannes was the starting point for everything from future commercial hits “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis” to arthouse successes like “Decision to Leave” and “Eo.” With less pandemic-era stagnation on productions, there are more newly finished (or almost finished) Cannes hopefuls in the mix than anytime in recent memory.
Some of the bigger ones have been widely reported: We already know that Martin Scorsese’s sprawling Osage Nation crime drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” will bring the revered director back to the festival with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in tow, while “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is poised to premiere in an out-of-competition slot 15 years after the last entry did the same thing. IFC has dropped the trailer and art for its upcoming comedy “Paint,” and leading man Owen Wilson goes full-on Bob Ross mode in it.
The film stars Wilson as Carl Nagyl, Vermont’s top TV painter who has everything going for him, from a fanbase to a van and even a perm, until a younger artist takes his spotlight. Nagyl is reminiscent of beloved TV icon Bob Ross, who led PBS’ instructional TV program “The Joy of Painting” from 1983 to 1994. He passed away in 1995 at 52 years old.
Wilson leads the film, having been previously featured in “Zoolander,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Bottle Rocket,” “Loki” and “The French Dispatch.” The actor also has the upcoming film “Haunted Mansion” on his docket with Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto and Winona Ryder.
Joining the Oscar-nominated star, the “Paint” cast includes Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renée, Lusia Strus, Stephen Root and newcomer Lucy Freyer.

At last count, Disney Animation Studios has canonized 61 of their features. The central "Disney Canon" refers to an ill-defined section of the studio's animated feature output that, as far as one might surmise, serves as examples of the studio's preferred "house style." The Disney Animated Canon includes several animation styles and media, of course, but the 61 films in question are considered to be "official." Canonized Disney films cannot be co-productions, they must be pointedly toyetic, and are typically not auteur-driven. One might not be able to, for instance, recall the directors of "Cinderella" (1950) off the top of their head. Their names, incidentally, are Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske. The trio also directed Disney's animated films "Lady and the Tramp," "Peter Pan," and "Alice in Wonderland."
For Disney, though, the company is the auteur, and weird, smaller projects tend to be excluded from the Disney Canon. "A Goofy Movie,...

On the heels of crowning the class of 2023, Variety is marking 25 years of keeping a keen eye on the next generation of filmmakers with its annual 10 Directors to Watch franchise.
Over the past quarter-century, the editorial initiative has cast an important career spotlight on such future boldface-name directors as Alfonso Cuaron, Christopher Nolan, Ava DuVernay, Wes Anderson, Chloé Zhao, Barry Jenkins, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Steve McQueen, Taika Waititi, Kasi Lemmons, Michael Winterbottom, Sarah Polley, Catherine Hardwicke, Lulu Wang, Jay Chandrasekhar, David Gordon Green and Fernando Meirelles.
The scouting for 10 Directors to Watch goes on all year among Variety‘s editorial staff. The series was birthed in January 1997 by veteran Variety editor Steven Gaydos, executive VP of global content and leader of the Focus features department. The goal is to identify hot helmers before they pick up any significant hardware — aka major award wins, Gaydos said.
